Typical of t-mobile for me to get disconnected as I am getting to the 20th transfer hopefully at the department I want.....

Posted by: robpet2

I don't think they're gonna win the best customer service this year... I called the other day about dropped calls and the 1st rep I was talking to said he would call me back on my work phone, and 2hours later I gave up.... I had to call them back and get the tech dept and they were no help.. could figure out why I was having dropped calls... they don't want to admit that they have network issues and sometimes thing happen, nor the fact that the mda sometimes has reception issues... so they blamed it on my bluetooth headset and said try using the phone with out the headset...
but anywho I wouldn't sign another contract with them either unless they get the trinity or the tytn added to their phone list( prefer the trinity so I won't have to by the microsd cards)...

Posted by: Deke218

The Trinity is cool yet I'd never get it. The lack of a keyboard is a deal breaker for me.

Gotta go with:
Quote:
Where the TyTN succeeds is in its connectivity options. The inclusion of Wi-Fi, EGDE, 3G and even the new HSPDA standard means there is bound to be some connection on offer wherever you are in the world. Combine this with an easy to use keyboard, a large screen and Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 - with push email support - and we struggle to find faults with the device.

Posted by: robpet2

it looks like the trinity should have a keyboard, being that its the same design as the tytn, but if it doesn't have the keyboard then I will have to ride with the tytn...
the tytn is being sold in europe currently...US TMO will probably get the device after sprin- being that the tytn is a 3g device and tmobiles argument will be "you can't utilize the 3g technology yet so why sell those phones yet, lets sell old tech phones that are slow and don't have all the storage and features, get them to buy the current tech phones and get them to sign a long contract, see how much we can charge for services and features and then sell the tytn and other 3g phones..."

According to howardchui.com canada is already offering 3g service on their cell phones...

I'm not trying to be rude or funny, but I used to be a noob a while back, but I stress the fact that its good to read thru all the pages... a lot of us have learned from trial and error trying different things and then posting them in this forum.... we were the guinea pigs when these mda first came out... now I know the roms being discussed are out of date or old... but there are probably some people that are still using them because to them they are more reliable to their device versus the 2.26 oem rom.... plus within this thread u will find all the links to what ever programs u want plus some members have created cool web pages which have links to different programs and games- check out maddogg and surereal networks....
There is no early graduation program or MED program, you have to do some work!

Have you tried Phone Dialer-Today Plug in? Over at XDA...

I have the T-Mobile MDA with the updated Software. My problem is that I can't change my themes. I can go to the "Today settings" and select the theme and it witll give me the Micrsoft "I'm working" icon but when it is done I am still on the default theme. HELP!!! This is my 2nd MDA and I did not encounter this problem before....

Not sure...whatever is on that site is the one I used. But, when I signed on yesterday it said there was an upgrade...So it automatically installed that for me.

Posted by: Stepheni730

Why is it I cant play anything (video, music) straight from the site on my phone? ONce I hit download the whole screen displays white with some funky lettering on it. I have flash player installed..I thought that is all I needed...is there something im missing?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Ok folks as soon as I get a sec with the phone im gonna try it ....

Posted by: djayrage

Which site are you referring too? Sometimes I've noticed that with certain media files the MDA or WMP does not know how to read the audio /video files properly & it will simply open up & display the actual coding for that particular file. Sometimes a soft reset alleviates the problem, other times you just can't open that particular file on your device (try a PC instead).
This may be the same problem your experiencing using Flash.

Got a query... for some odd reason my MDA doesnt recognize none of my folders in my card like it usually did except for 1 folder, and i had 6 folders in my card but it now recognizes just that one folder... when i check the storage left in my card it actually says i gut like 1mb left which is correct but when i got to my card using file explorer it only showing that one folder that bearly has anything in it... and yea i did a soft and hard reset but i get the same thing so what do i do? i hope i can get all those things stored back and hopefully its not the card that i have to re-format or something...

i had a simmlar issue when i removed the card WHILE it was playing audio from it. seemed like i lost everything. Oddly, after a few days (and after i recopied certain items) it all came back, but the items that i recopied were taking up extra space (on the card 2x, but only visible 1x). ultimately, i had to format the card and start from scratch. did you by chance remove the card while it was being accessed?

Posted by: djayrage

I also had a similar issue, but the problem with mine was I kept noticing a few MB's missing each day. I used Resco & the built in File Explorer & I couldn't find anything out of the norm, but when I inserted the card into a card reader & connected that to my laptop, I found a bunch of hidden files.
I couldn't erase those files (kept getting an "access denied" message). So I just copied the essential files I needed from the storage card to a folder on my PC & formatted the card.

Posted by: eckoreddr3

yea i prolly did pull it out by accident.... ok but how do i reformat the card? i dont have a card reader is that the only way? can i do it through Active Synch or trough my MDA? Dont tell me i wouldve to get a card reader to reformat or get better access to the files that i cant view with the reader....

Posted by: djayrage

YeahI formatted my card using my card reader, but I believe you could do it using one of those management apps like Pocket Mechanic.

PS card readers are relatively cheap, I got mine for about $7 from Radio Shack.

I have a T-Mobile MDA and am looking for EITHER
The CHEAPEST OR The FASTEST possible internet connection.

1st it occured to me that the T-zones plan could do the trick for all my internet needs. This would save $$.

Then it occurred to me that I might be able to "spoof" my home PC in order to trick T-mobile into thinking I was actually using a phone and then be able to use the total unlimited internet connection for both my phone and my home pc? Add Skype to that mix and I could concievably get all 3 (home_phone, cell_phone, and broadband) for under $50.00.

Also, my wife is getting one too and that further complicates matters.

Could someone chime in and explain all of this to me. What connection choices might be best and what are my real possibilities?

Lol, you said broadband... remember, this is just EDGE. Real life, i just did a speedtest through my laptop and got 9K d/l and 3K upload. Now once they go to 3G, maybe...

ive done it b4 but now that i updated my rom i cant shut off the message sent notification after i send a text- ive tried the reg edit on the MDA faq page - its not workin. CAN ANYONE HELP ME - jus refresh my memory please

thanks

Posted by: djayrage

The Registry edit on the FAQ page does not work with the latest official Tmobile ROM. The only thing I know that works is tweaks2k2 (www.tweaks2k2.com) but then again that's the only thing I've really tried.

I'm not sure which reg edit app your talking about, but when I had the official 2.26 tmo rom I was using phm reg edit, or total commander...phm works with anything, u just gotta save changes and sometimes do a soft reset.... resco has a reg edit program aslo u might wanna check that product suite out(its free for 30days)...
check out their resco radio app...rayge pm me about the radio

Posted by: djayrage

I use Resco's registry editor. For some reason I was still getting the message sent pop ups, but with Tweaks2k2 I got rid of them. (Tweaks2k2 does want you to pay for their app, but they let you run it 3 times before that, so I just run it once, enable the hacks I want & never use it again).

Resco Radio is cool, but works best over WiFi. I've used it a few times & even with the lowest quality streams I would get skips in the audio (it has to buffer everything, meaning it has to download the audio & of course EDGE isn't fast enough, at least not for me). & it doesn't work with Live365.com which hosts my radio station

Posted by: robpet2

hey the mda has a few quirks with it, and the orig tmo rom is kind of shaky... I recently upgraded to X's custom rom and its almost flawless - my mda runs way faster than it has ever run, plus i got it overclocked at 240mhz constantly with omap overclock .04 --
i just downloaded resco radio last night, havent had a chance to really play with it yet but I have noticed that its hard as hell to try and get stations to play - if my office had wifi i would be straight on it... i like stream center better cause it doesnt matter what connection you have it will always play local stations

I just purchased this new MDA from eBay.

I understand it is best to update the Radio to v2.47.11 for better reception and that there is a much faster ROM for the device though much variance on which to use. I've also understood that I may need to unlock both the device and the CID. Is this all true? If so, I want to make sure I do a backup so I don't turn it into a brick.

From start to finish, could someone tell me precisely what I should get and in what order? This assistance would be greatly appreciated and I would even be willing to pay some very experienced user a modest sum to chat with me while I go through it the first time around. Once I finish this one for my wife, I plan to order my own.

CURRENT STATS:
Model WIZA200
ROM v1.8.10.2 WWE, ROM Date 12/10/05
Radio v01.09.10
Protocol v4.0.13.20
ExtROM v1.8.10.104

check this thread for the custom rom i use - X's custom rom http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=980730
this rom will automatically unlock the device so you wont have to worry about turning the mda into a paperweight

for the radio rom ( do this after you update the system rom ) click here http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1018424

Do I need to back up my device FIRST?

Posted by: robpet2

if u want to back up its up to you, but you won't be able to restore a backup from a different rom, only your contacts...just sync your device with the pc first, and follow the dirrections in the thread I posted ( it tells you step by step ).
ONCE YOU TAKE EITHER THE BLUE OR RED PILL, YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE WHAT PATH TO TAKE

I thought there was something I could use to back up the entire device to an SD card that I could boot and restore to even if the device became 'brick-like'

Now I seen repairing thru a sd card but I havent seen backing up whole system as of yet. But I believeit is possible to do so . But what you need to understand is that you are changing the whole workings of the phone. So your best bet is make sure you have offical rom if all goes bad,

Posted by: robpet2

you can search this forum and read some of the topics, we all understand your a noob and a lot of folks put a lot of time in researching things.... get spb backup or sktools.. if u have the oem 1.08rom there is no need to back up that junk- download the 2.26oem rom from tmobile-use that as your backup...if u want to go with X's custom 2.26rom there is 99.9 % success rate...

LET ME GET BACK TO THE USC GAME

AND THE ROBERT2 has spoken.......

Posted by: robpet2

COMMERCIAL BREAK

also when u do the rom upgrade you might want to upgrade the radio rom also to 2.47.11 - you can find that on xda developers forum(u have to register to download anything from their forum )
after u do the radio rom and the system rom you can now begin trickin out your mda....there are tons of programs and apps that u can install, some are free -some u have to pay for... put the basic apps and your main programs that u think you will use the most on the mda first..then do a backup so you can restore to a good point in life with your mda... then start playing with new apps and stuff...REMEMBER TO SAVE MOST OF YOUR APPS TO THE MINISD CARD - so u can have more memory available... any today screen plugins ( ie. spb pocket plus or spb diary, resco file explorer - this is a must have app) , check reviews on spb products, I use to like them till I found out it slowed my mda down and gave me a few problems, but u can try it out if you want...get overclock .04 from xda developers page, change your today screen up ( www.pocketpcthemes.com ) download wisbar advance, msvc 1.6, pie plus, opera 8.60,ms framework, flashplayer, a intent java midlet, (dont go overboard by putting any rhinestones on the mda lol)...check out some of my previous post on websites to check out for free apps, here's a few www.freecabs.de
www.surrealnetworks.com/mpx
www.freewareppc.com
www.pdagold.com
www.pocketpcfreeware.com
www.google.com - use it to search
get sktools - great program
tcmcp player - media player
agile messenger or try implus

AND ONCE AGAIN USE THE SEARCH BUTTON IN THIS FORUM
u can find answers to many questions and read this thread(start from about page 75 or 100 )
we all expect your book report in the morning!

Posted by: rpodos

"read this thread(start from about page 75 or 100 )"...

MWAHAHAHAHA!!!

Good advice above. Don;t sweat upgrading to X's ROM and the radio ROM; as mentioned, sync your contacts and download the latest Tmobile ROM... voila, you ae backed up.

In addition to the basics robpet listed, get SmartsKey.

Posted by: robpet2

only reason why I X's custom rom is because I used the 2.26oem tmo rom and it sucked up all the mda storage, don't get me wrong it took me about 3mos to do the upgrade and I never looked back.. X's custom stripped some of the stuff u will never use that slows the mda down, plus he has done the majority of all hacks u will need to do...I still haven't downloaded smartkey( noob question - what does it do Tom ?)
X's custom rom left me with like 25mb of mda storage avail..which is good plus his rom manages the memory a little but better than the oem....I used to do 3 or more soft resets a day, now I'm down to 1 soft reset per week!!

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Well dont feel bad at all becasue I have a brandnew MDA sent from t-mobile and it sucks sucks and sucks a little bit more .. Came with rom 2.6 whic I wish was 1.08 so I could do what I wish .... Not sure what to think of this horriblle example of the MDA .... Done tweaked it like crazy guess ill take a chance see if I can downgrade it in order to cid unlock it .

Posted by: trpenner

Thanks Robert2 and everyone. That gives me a great start though I think the notion of reading over 100 pages from P100 on is not going to happen. I appreciate all the advice and now have X's ROM update and working on radio ROM so I'm tweaking away. Thanks again.

Posted by: rpodos

SmartsKey remaps the volume slider so it scrolls, and opens Start menu by pushing and holding the left soft button... invaluable for one-handed use.

Posted by: robpet2

question, with tom tom do I need a gps attacment to make it work??

And let me clarify something, the only reason I have mentioned to read some of the pages of this thread, is because there is a lot of useful info that pertain to software, applications, do-and donts, what programs not to use, tons of tweaks and web page links...but anyway I think a lot of other members have read quite a bit b4 changing anything on their phone, because a lot of us know that you VOID YOUR HTC WARRANTY BY CHANGING THE ROM, that's why u keep the orig rom or the 2.26 oem rom backed up on the computer.

on a side note, has anyone had success with wm5 new menu app??
since I got MS voice command 1.6, I can use my mda with no hands for basic operation.

You need a GPS receiver in order to use TomTom since GPS is not built into the device, but Im sure that you knew that so I dont understand your question.

I have actually been using Resco's whole suite of applications. I love them all.

I found a nice little tid bit of info last night I thought I would share here. I know everyone here is sick and tired of the Keyboard popping up ALL the damn time. Null keyboard is OK, but you cant set it to default and have it work all the time. You have to change it all the time. Well I found the reg hack to fix this issue.

1. Registry key - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip\AllowChange=1
2. I changed the above value to AllowChange=0
3. Soft Reset

You will no longer have to deal with the GD keyboard popping up on you. The only thing is, if you like using the keyboard, this will also stop you from being able to open it. Basically you will always have to use the qwerty keyboard. I always do so that is not a problem for me.

I actually checked out this app today. Not bad at all. A little bit slower than Google local, but definitely nice for a free app, and a little easier to use.

I am fairly new to the MDA...and I have been trying to figure out a way to make the keyboard "light" stay on longer than it does. ( I have searched )
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

And I'm totally new to pocket pc's, just got the MDA from a friend a couple days ago. How do you get it so that movies aren't so damn choppy?

Movies play better with better software. Also you must have a mem card. Also certain formats are of coure better than others.

Hello. I have an 8125 and i just cant figure out the connection settings. What i really want to do is be able to use agile messanger. I had it working last night but messed with the connection settings and now it will no longer work. In my connection settings i dont have any kind of connections listed.

Ive read through the FAQs and Stickys but I just cant find it. Im trying to find the instructions or someone who can give me the access point names and the proxy server numbers. I hope this isnt a report or a very often asked questions.

I have an 8125 unlocked and running with a T-Mobile SIM. I had Agile working but again when I was messing around in the connections i accidently deleted all the connections. Im jsut trying to figure out the right APN's and server numbers and so forth.

Please and thanks a million

Sean

I haven't gotten into all the conection settings and swappin carriers stuff... but to answer your questions - check out xda developers, go under either wizard or find that model phone on their list theres a couple of threads addressing that issue, I find it I will post the link

Ah you rock! Im on the XDA forums right now but can seem to find it. Agile will work with my Wifi turned on but when its off it doesnt like it.

OK as for the keyboard back light, there is nothing you can do. It is the way it is.

Make movies play better. Two things you can do. Get tweaks2k2. It has a video tweak to make videos run smoother. Then you get TCPMP. It is by far the best and most versitile media player you can get for the MDA.

As for the Agile connection problem. Uninstall it and reinstall it. Unless you are saying that you deleted all connections on your MDA and it doesn't connect to anything at all. In which case, I would suggest looking at the beginning of this thread (within the first 10 pages I believe) or in the XDA dev forums. Or you can just do a Hard reset and start over again from scratch.

People I can't stress enough. IF YOU ARE GOING TO PLAY AROUND WITH NEW THINGS ON YOUR DEVICE. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE HAND.

SBP Backup is the best that I have used yet. So many options, and totally customizable backup options. Make a boo boo, restore and you are back to normal.

Posted by: robpet2

I SECOND THE SPB BACKUP

I have learned from trial and error with my mda so many times..
my latest mistake was downloading that damn ultimatebet poker software for ppc ------- DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS APP, IT WILL MAKE YOUR FONTS IN POCKET IE LOOK CRAZY, PLUS ITS MESSIN UP MY PIE PLUS------
everything was fine with my mda, until then, now I have to do a hard reset, but I'm mad I installed several apps since my last backup ... oh well I think majority of them are on my pc... hint hint - your pc also does a sort of mini back up of all cabs run thru the pc so it makes it sort of painless to reinstall.... if you play poker go with www.realdice.com - by far the best poker game for ppc...

on a side note..

has anyone tried the animated today program
or flash themes player for ppc... I'm thinking about trying it since I have to do a hard reset in the next few days?

Posted by: i3onk

Whats up Rob

Nope, haven't tried any...No wait I take that back. I think I tried one, i think it was a weather app. didn't work at all for me. I am pleased with the 25M of storage and the 21M of program memory I get at startup. I don't think I want to ruin that with some animated today stuff that would continuously eat the ram away. Since you are doing a hard reset anyways, i say go for it. As for me, I'm happy with the way My PPC is right now.

Posted by: robpet2

the most ram I can start with is 20mb and I'm down to about 13mb of mda storage..

I just checked in remove programs and I counted 64 programs ( including custom themes that installed as programs) I got screenshots but I haven't had luck posting them from my mda - unless I reduce the quality of the jpg file and then they're too blurry... do you use bmp, jpg, or png for screenshots ??
I used png

Posted by: i3onk

I use the Resco screen capture, and it uses png. The only prob, is the image is too big to upload here. Here is a capture of my screen. I thought I was 21M program, I'm only at 20M

Left meter is my Program, middle is storage, and right is my 128M minisd. My 2G went bad so have to get a new one.

I Have 42 Programs listed. I get rid of themes and backgrounds and anything I have no use for. I like to keep my device clean

Posted by: robpet2

not sure which version of resco screen capture u got but I have the latest version and it gives u the option of png, jpg, bmp.

are you using a image link or attaching images via the mda or pc..

Posted by: i3onk

I just checked and have an older version of Photo viewer. Just got the new one, so that should fix my screen capture.

It was an image link from my photo bucket account.

Posted by: i3onk

Yeah, upgrading did it. Im good to go now. Have it set to take .jpg's

I have had my MDA for a long time now, but only recently have I decided to actually make modifications. So can someone do me a favor?... Just let me know what is the best registry key prgm to use right now? I've seen one or two, but I dont know which one is more up to date.
Thanks in advance ppl.

Posted by: robpet2

you can try true commander(which comes with X's rom, or try resco file explorer) or phm reg edit... check out www.surrealnetworks.com/mpx
it should be on there... pm and I can hook you up

Posted by: i3onk

To edit the registry myself I use resco. To use a registry tool, I like both tweaks2k2 and registry wizard. The two combined will set you up with almost everything you need to do with the registry.

Posted by: zafrir

Whats better? The MDA or the SDA?

Posted by: zafrir

Is there a registry hack for the MDA to make the volume louder? I put the volume at the highest level and it still is kinda soft.

Posted by: i3onk

That all depends on what you are looking for. The SDA is a phone first everything else econd. MDA is a pocket pC first and a phone second. I have had my MDA since a week after it was released. It is by far the best purchase I made all of this year. I love it. The multitude of things you can do, and the customizations you can make to this device simply kicks ***.

I second that notion

does anyone else have the cab files to he tmo ringtones that were included with the orig rom... all i got is ringtones that i created on my mda right now and the cheezy old phone ring, and tmo ringtone.

Well, I tried to sync my MDA with my new Vista OS computer, but got the following error message:

Previous versions of ActiveSync cannot be installed on Windows Vista. The features previously found in ActiveSync are now available in Windows Device Center. Connect your Windows Mobile powered device to the PC to get the Windows Mobile Device Center from Windows Update.

So I went up to Microsoft.com, typed in the above, and was taken to a site that allowed me to download a special ActiveSync for Vista. Man, it is really nice! Everything to sync and all the settings/configurations are there, laid out in very attractive dialog boxes.

So, why am I telling you guys this? Because everyone will upgrade eventually to Vista. It is that good.

I got an MDA the first week it came out. I have enjoyed it since then.
A month ago, the touch screen failed in the center.
When I went to T-Mobile to check it out, I came across the Dash.
T-Mobile replaced my MDA with a Dash (on my request) and I am very happy.
The Dash is basically the next generation SDA.

PROS:
The screen is sharper and brighter.

It boots quicker.

IE5 works better than I was able to get mine to.

I can type messages one handed OR two handed.

As a phone, it kicks the MDA's butt!
I can just grab it and start dialing, by name OR number.
It has PROFILES!

There is alot of 3rd party sofware available for it.

CONS:

There is no touchscreen.
For what I do (multiple email accounts, some web browsing, ALOT of calling, viewing of pricelists), that has not been much of a problem

Web browsing is definitely more cumbersome without a touchscreen.

The included software doesn't support editing of Office documents.
There is 3rd party software that does, but I haven't tried it yet.

So far, I prefer the Dash over the MDA.

I searched on the forum, but I can't find the asnwer for my problem. The stylus tip (the black plastic tip) got stucked inside my mda. I want to get out but no luck. Does anyone had the same problem before? if so, can you get it out?

Posted by: robpet2

never heard of that one b4, but u might want to try a couple of options...
1. take a paper clip, stretch it out and put some good adhesive tape on the tip and stick it in the hole and hope it catches..
2. take a lighter to the tip of the paper clip and hope that it can touch the tip of the stylus and get it to melt the tip enough, cool off and it might comeout..
3. follow the instructions on xda developers on how to disassemble the mda and go from there..
4. there was a thread that showed how to put a paperclip in the stylus slot thru the back of the phone under the battery ( I think it was posted under stylus fix )...
5. take your mda back to tmo store and raise hell about faulty equipment and they might give u a whole new mda for your trouble.

I would agree with what Rob said. I would get something paperclipish (preferably with a sharp point on the end) and heat it up. Stick it in the hole and push hard enough for it to penetrate the tip. Let it cool off and pull it out. That should do it.

Sorry if that sounds nasty. It should work though.

thx alot. I will try the flaming paperclip trick tomorow. i hope it work

start reading from page 150 and on... if you really wanna learn how to really trick the mda out start from page 1....
check out xda developers site....
if you go thru these pages check out the site that member maddogg ( i forgot the whole member name ) but he has a site that has some cool links on it..

I've got a wierd question... Does anyone think that when WM crossbow and photon come out that the MDA will be upgraded to that OS? And if so, lets say that if I something happens to my current phone that i would get a replacement that runs on either of those Os's??? I can't help but think its a somewhat stupid question, but I still feel very curiously about it.

I would highly doubt that this would be offered as a free upgrade, it might be a hacked version that someone figures out how to run but it will not be the most stable. Similar to WM2003 devices that were hacked to run WM5. Not supported by any means but were "capable" of running it.

i used safety pins and heat up the tip, but it didn't do the trick. the stylus tip still inside my mda. My new 3-pak stylus just arrived today, but I can't put it inside the hole because of the stucked tip. is there any other way to get it out?

where did you buy the 3 pack?

i got another problem with my MDA. everytime I boot up the device with the memory card inside the slot, the screen went to Synch page and it got locked up. But when I take out the card from the slot, the device boot up just fine. I still can use the card after i boot up without it, but it's getting annoying to take out the card everytime I have to hard boot the device. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my device? is it a virus or something like that?

I just got my MDA w/ a HS850 BT headset, and I had a quick question. Why is it when the phone is in my pocket that I can barely use my BT headset? There is so much static that I can't hear the other person - I literally have to put the phone right next to the headset so I can hear...and what's the use of that?

But...when I'm in my car and the phone is in the passenger seat, I'm fine (no static)?

What program are you using now?

You could try Agile Messenger (www.agilemobile.com) or IM+ (www.shapeservices.com) I have not had a problem with either, but do prefer the layout to Agile.

Eqo also has a java based im client that is free (www.eqo.com) but was buggy when I used it.

I have seen that with a few of the phones ... Did you get a phone replaced after losing or reaking 1. These are refurbished phones and I have seen the BT problem a lot.

Posted by: robpet2

the bluetooth static is weird.. since my bluetooth earpiece is on my right ear I have to keep my mda on my right side of my body if its in my holster or pocket while using the bluetooth feature, if its in my left pocket then I get tons of static.. when the mda is say on the table and I'm walking around talking I don't get any static. so its something like the natural electodes in the human body cause some sort of interference with the frequency of the BT headset...
if you have a metal plate in your head that would also cause a lot of static - lol
but if the problem persist send the mda back our try a different model BT headset..
I have the moto HT500 and only had a problem with the mda in my left pocket while using the bt headset..

I am thinking about buying a MDA and using something like Agile Messenger or IM+. When receiving instant messages will I get a notification like the little AOL running guy at the top of the home screen? This is important that I have a visual way to just glance and see if I have instant messages. I had a DASH and it did not do this and I returned it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, Agile, I'M+ & the built in IM app all display a pop-up at the top of the screen when you receive a new IM.

Most T-mobile MDA's come with OZ instant messenger which is totally intergrated in the phone.

Posted by: Tiffster

Just remember that OZ uses text messages...

Posted by: robpet2

OZ SUCKS.. try agile or im+..
if you are looking for aol instant messenger - there is on on floating around on this forum - aim 2.0 - do a search for it...
yahoo messenger - try im+ or agile( even though you have to pay for agile annually now its worth it cause its seems to be the most reliable to use ) but it does tend to cause the mda to lock up.

My only problem with Agile is, I seam to miss phone calls and text messages if I stay logged onto Agile for too long. I like Agile for the push to talk feature. Works just like a nextel with a little bit of lag.

I know what you mean Rob. I have had the same issue since the day I got my MDA. I have noticed that I get the static if my body blocks the line of sight from the ear piece. That is though, only when I have ti on my body. When the device is anywhere else, I don't have that issue. Seams like the body give off just enough electrical interference to cause the static, I dont know.

My MDA is not recognizing my storage card. It started after I had my phone in my back pocket for several hours on a plane flight. When I took the phone out of my pocket after the flight, the storage card was sticking out slightly. I pushed it back in, but the phone doesn't know it's there.

I can read the card with a card reader on my desktop computer. All the files and folders are there.

Anyhone know how to get the phone to see the card?

Try a soft reset with the card inserted in the phone . If it doesnt read the card then most likely you sat on it too much and now the prongs arent making contact . If thats so I hope you have a warranty or insurance.

Never mind--I got it. I held the card down in the slot (didn't release it back to its normal installed position), and the phone recognized it. When I let it go, the phone didn't see it again. I figured maybe the contacts were dirty since I carry it around in my pocket a lot, and when I held it in it was hitting a "clean" spot. So I took a pencil eraser to the contacts to clean them up. I also blew out the slot with air. Works just fine now.

No, it's ok. You must not have seen my post right after the first one I had done on this subject--I got it to work by cleaning the contacts on the storage card.

New question. I know there is another way to sync my Outlook contacts, calendar, and email with the MDA other than using ActiveStink. And I know that answer is somewhere in this thread, but I don't want to have to go through 263 pages of posts to find it.

Does anyone have a quick answer? ActiveStink screws things up way too often.

Bluetooth.

Emoze won't sync your Notes, though.

Seriously, emoze will do the trick for you. The latest build seems to have reduced the memory footprint and minimized leaks.

Will it be safe to use another charger for the MDA, I have charger that fits the MDA that was made for my creative mp3 player. Are all mini usb chargers the same?

Thanks for the info. I'm trying it and it seems to be working ok. I'll have to experiment with the settings to get it to work the way I want it to, but at least it's not giving me all the duplicates ActiveStink was.

You just have to check to make sure the voltage and current ratings are the same. I use the charger for a Dell mp3 player with my MDA.

No some chargers are different. You may end up frying your mda.

Ok I over-looked this thread myself and maybe it was 1 of the many other threads I have posted on. Now not saying anything but ill quote myself from another site here.. Since I cant give a link to downloads that arent paid for or sites which permit this type of activity.

*** From another phone site ***

OK ... I have installed this program and yes it did say it was a 7 day trial .... But when I went to the agile site and downloaded the messenger and installed it I didnt see a 7 day trial. But it did say re-install/upgrade when I was doing the new install via activesync. So I am not sure I will use it until anything happens. The download page link is here and it has downloads for many phones and other devices.

http://www.agilemobile.com/downloads.html

*** End from another phone site ***

So What I did was nstall a so-called crack version and then upgraded to official release from the agile site. Mine has been working flawlessly.

I use AIM 2.0, Its great. I havent had any problems...and I dont understand why people say they cant use the keyboard because the taskbar is moved to the bottom. If you simply have the MAGICBUTTON program, it allows you to see the keyboard. Just Hold the X button in while on aim and itll hide all of your programs that you have open and show the keyboard. So now its great...and theres no worry about any trials, its free download.

The only thing that I miss about agile is the picture messaging...quickly shoot a picture and send them the link. But AIM allows you to enter your own away message, agile doesnt =D. Its all preference.

I just got down loading a couple things into my phone for ease of use....I got the: Wei's soft battery time plus (shows storage left on the phone, and battery life on today screen), PDAGear.net Expense Diary (for personal finances), and Scott Seligmans Launcher (puts shortcut icons on your today screen). Also, I downloaded PONG and the RUBIX cube to my phone. Love it all..haha.

I ONLY HAVE ONE QUESTION...Ive tried 3 alarms, and none were good. Which alarms do you use for your phone, because the one on the phone sucksss. Also, where did u download it. And dont tell me to search the forum because I did, and I found a few but I didnt like them. I wanted to see if recently anyone found any newer ones they prefer. Thank you.

Nope I am not gonna tell you to search thru the forum .... But I dont use alarms so not sure what to tell you. Now you say you use aim 2.0 where did you download it at ??? but I think I do have a nice alarm program let me look and ill find it for you...

Thanks man, Ill give it a try when I get home from work. As far as the aim, I did a search and found it. But since you didnt tell me to search, I re-traced my steps and found where I d-loaded it from. You have to be logged in but go to this site...

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271468

Scroll down and itll be there, its the aim_102.zip file...and if you have magic button you can use the phones keybad (despite what people are saying). Let me know how it works out.

I'm a noob at this pocket pc stuff. I'm not usually baffled by tech stuff, but I'm having problems getting set up.

Signed up for tzones for email and browsing. Registered one of my pop3 mail accounts on "mytmobile." When I run the "download my account settings" it finds it just fine. When I try to set up triggers it doesn't show up. Messages don't show up on phone, but they're waiting for me on the mytmobile site.

So then I downloaded and ran the tzones cab file from the link posted by Alex301 (thanks Alex), and set up two accounts manually in Outlook. (I've set up mail accounts on numerous computers, so I'm pretty comfortable with the settings.)

One account, which is a mail account for a site of mine, will send mail, but not receive. The other, which is a cox.net account, will receive mail, but not send.

This happens both with GPRS and wi-fi.

How screwy is that?

I've searched and read at least a couple hundred posts and can't seem to find any posts that directly relate. Any advice?

There are lots of paid programs that include tabs such as Spb Pocket Plus, SBSH iLauncher, etc. (among other functions).

If you want a good free one, search freewareppc.com for cLaunch.

You really should look at the outputs marked on the chargers to make sure. They may work, but if you are using one that has a higher output amperage you may be slowly doing long-term damage to your phone.

My mda killed my moto bluetooth charger, I guess cause of the voltage issues. I think I got the ht500 and been switching back and forth from the oem tmo mda charger and my bluetooth charger when I'm at work... my battery doesn't last a whole day due to phone calls, surfin the web, and emails that I receive from work and all the other accounts I have...

has anyone had success with wm6 on the mda?

Get acrobat reader !

is that the one from here

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html

Because the file is 13.5 MB O.o. I only have 10 left on my phone. I have an SD card, 2GB. But it has to use the storage of the phone to actually run right? Or am I looking at the wrong file to download =(. Please help...LoL

I have so many programs on my SD card but when I install them they take up Storage and program space on my phone, so I literally have almost nothing left.

That's da' one I' have. On my MDA it shows the siza of the app as 2.28 mb. Try it and when you are install it the MDA will show the size and the space you have. Should be enough. It's not going to be 13.5. I' think that is just the file thats placed on you home pc, then you do the install via active sync.

Posted by: BKLYN TICO

Not much action in this thread anymore, BUT still got another question.
I've been tryin to use the TCPMP player on my MDA, but when I try to watch videos that are in WMV format, it mostly skips/sticks. The audio plays well ahead of the video. But when I watch vids in the mpg format they play perfectly, but mpg takes up way too much space on my SD card. Any fine tuning or touch ups that can get my wmv to play as good as the mpg does?

Posted by: djayrage

What are you using to encode the video's?

Posted by: BKLYN TICO

Normally when I put the SD card into my laptop, Windows media player automatically converts the file to WMV before syncing them to the SD card.

Posted by: djayrage

Try having your mda connected to your PC & syncing the video to your device via WMP that way.
Also do those videos skip in WMP as well?

I get occasional skipping on my audio/video from my MDA, but that's usually because I have something else bogging down the memory in the background.

I am a first timer to the MDA scene. As far as I am concerned the MDA should be able to connect to the internet via wi-fi even if I am not subscribed to the t-mobile internet plan. But for some reason I can't get the MDA to connect to my local network. I checked my CAPS and all that for my network key but still keep getting a error message "unable to obtain a server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network settings"

You are right, the MDA can connect to the internet through WiFi without a t-mobile internet plan.

What encryption are you using on your network? Can you successfully connect to your network via other devices?

There have been several threads about folks having this problem. I know because I'm one of them. I've tried connecting to our city-wide WiFi with no luck. If you search on the subject one of the things that comes up is that the MDA has problems with certian blocks of IP numbers. I don't remember the specifics but I haven't been able to find a work-around. I've learned to live without it because I do all right with Edge speeds including steaming XM at work all day. Good luck!

Well that was one of the reasons I got the MDA cause I was told that there is a way to get wi-fi WITHOUT having to subscribe to the t-mobile internet plan. I do not want to pay an additional $30 for my cell phone internet

Posted by: robpet2

you can get free wifi with the mda, it just takes for ever to search for the networks... you can try wififofum, hitchhiker, or check some of the registry settings and enable 802.11 connectivity.... check this forum for the hacks in earlier parts of this thread....
but mine has always worked for the free wifi networks around town and in the neighborhood... you might want to try to change your rom on your phone to one of the custom roms out there, which give you more options and features than the OEM roms that tmo provides

so how would I install hitchhiker on my phone ( I know it's such a noob question but I really don't want to screw anything up). I would like to try this to get on my home network before I go the changing the rom way.

Posted by: MarkBrian

My personal experience:
MDA connects to WiFi networks just fine, and it has nothing to do with any T-Mobile plan and you do not need any custom ROM.
At least, I've never had any trouble connecting to any WiFi network that I've wanted to, unless they were password protected. And if I know the password I've had no trouble with those either.

You might want to take it to a T-Mobile store and have one of them try connecting it to their in-store LAN (every store has one, just about). Sounds like something is funky with that specific device because the wi-fi should be able to find a LAN out-the-box.

As far as I know, the only tmobile phones that support prepaid are branded as "to go" versions, i.e., the "sidekick to go."

As far as internet on the mda, I use the t-mobile web package for $6.99 a month, it's slow, but it'll get you there. I'm usually near a wi-fi that I have access to, so this is for looking up stuff while I'm on the road. I don't text much, since I can do email with this package. They do have a pretty cheap texting plan as well.

One note, I wasn't able to sign up for the tmobile web when "my tmobile" knew I had an MDA, I remembered it being an option when I still had my razr, so I switched back on my tmobile, signed up for the tmobile web package and once it showed up as active I switched my phone back in order to set up the email accounts. Works perfectly now.

Apparently there IS software you can buy that does texting using your internet access instead of the texting service. From my recollection, it's got mixed reviews. I don't know the name, but if you have a few hours to search and read you'll be able to find it.

hey i just got the MDA not to long ago i love the phone its the **** but i am having trouble with some things how do things. like how do i put games on my MDA and down load other things i just nned some one to give me a run though on how to do things

Posted by: Flashfox

I first install the games on the host computer and let ActiveSync set it up on my MDA. I do tell AS to place all games on my 2GB Flash card to conserve RAM space.

Posted by: suproach

If anyone has an MDA and has a friend with a prepaid sidekick or vice versa, could you please try switching out the SIM card's for me to see how well the internet works.
Thanks a Million, Roach

k, switched to a newer router which can do both 802.11 b or g or both, kept it on 802.11 b and the MDA connected to this router out of the box, so that was sweet. But I couldn't get IE to display any of the websites that I put the address for. I put www.hotmail.com etc etc..but no luck..is there any settings that I need to double check? Thanks for all your help guys.

It won't be hurt by it, but you do need to download a patch.

From Mark/Space newsletter #52 (instructions for install without internet access are for Mac, but the same basic principles apply for installing from a Windows machine)

For Windows Mobile devices with direct Internet access:
1. Using the Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile browser on your device, go
to
<http://announce.markspace.com/lists/lt.php?id=N08BV1YCDwBRHwZaTgRRAldVVw%3D%3D>
and download the Daylight Saving Time 2007 Update for Windows Mobile. This
file will install the update directly on the device. On your device,
navigate to the file you downloaded, and then click on it to install the
update.
2. After installing the update, you must manually adjust the time zone
setting on your device before the DST update will function. See
<http://announce.markspace.com/lists/lt.php?id=N08BV1YCDwBQHwZaTgRRAldVVw%3D%3D>
for instructions on how to adjust the time zone settings on your device.

For Windows Mobile devices without direct Internet access:
1. Visit Microsoft’s Daylight Savings Time 2007 Download page for Windows
Mobile devices:
2. Agree to the license terms and then download the proper update for your
device type (Pocket PC or Smartphone--here’s how to tell
<http://announce.markspace.com/lists/lt.php?id=N08BV1YCDwBTHwZaTgRRAldVVw%3D%3D>,
if you aren’t sure). The downloaded update will be called either
“DST2007.CAB“ or “DST2007_SP.CAB”
3. Connect your Windows Mobile device to your Mac via USB or Bluetooth and
allow The Missing Sync’s connection process to complete.
4. Drag and drop the update file onto The Missing Sync’s main window or
application icon on the Dock. The Missing Sync will switch to the Install
tab view and ask if the file should be installed to the Default location.
Click Default, and the file will be installed.
5. The update will run automatically on the device.
6. After installing the update, you must manually adjust the time zone
setting on your device before the DST update will function. See
<http://announce.markspace.com/lists/lt.php?id=N08BV1YCDwBQHwZaTgRRAldVVw%3D%3D>
for instructions on how to adjust the time zone settings on your device.

Aside from being unreasonable, about 2/3 of this thread is just questions and jabber. A newb isn't even going to know what a ROM is, nor really understand the difference between installing an EXE or a CAB, and this thread, as a whole, doesn't answer that. It certainly can be a good source if you already know what you're looking for and can search it.

To be sure, the MDA FAQ will provide a newb with a LOT of information. check it out at Howard Forum MDA FAQ

There's also a wiki page at wiki howard forums MDA

There isn't going to be an easy answer about setting up an MDA. It really depends on what you want it to do. Some people are really interested in text messaging, others in email, others in hacking. Start by defining what you want to be able to do with your little computer.

Mail, messages, internet, maps, gps, games, media player, voice recognition, data syncing, calendars, photos, etc.

If you are interested in email and web access (aside from wifi), the minimum plan you will need from tmobile is "tmobile web." It's cheap and slow, but it will get you there. If you want messaging you have the option of buying a messaging plan from tmobile, paying by the message, or using software that will send messages via the internet, bypassing the tmobile message service. From what I've been able to find there are a few choices that work consistently for this, but neither is free. Not too terribly expensive, either.

Start with basic stuff, then as you get used to working with the MDA, consider adding to it for more features.

While I agree with your number, that still leaves 85+ pages of answers right? You are going to get the jabber in any thread especially one of this length, but for a newb it can be a good start as many newb like questions are answered.

That is all I was attempting to get at and not purposely trying to give a bad answer.
