It says I'm running low on storage space...and I don't have any programs or anything on the phone. I notice that the amount of space I have gets lower for no apparent reason...anybody know anything I can do while waiting for my SD card? What takes up storagr space that I can delete? Thanx

Have you been using Pocket Internet Explorer? The cache will continue to increase and fill your memory. Clear the cache and you should be ok.

Thanx alot...that helped.

Right now I'm using my MDA with my iMac. And I transfer files via bluetooth. But the problem is that the files are saved to the PHONES memory instead of my storage card. I bet PC people would want to know how to change it as well. I found this at MGN.

http://www.mobilegadgetnews.com/ind...showtopic=10608

But that didn't work, just like the guy posted said. Any ideas.

Until PocketMac gets WM5 support going I will be waiting for your replies.

Alexsocall thanks man but I got the UK AIM to work with me

Now.... How can I delete a Email account on the MDA and Also how Can I close programs when their on my Start list.

Posted by: sflyer

I'm soliciting opinions of MDA users about how happy they are with the phone aspect of their MDA--RF, volume, call quality, etc.

I've read the thread, but most of the comments are on the data or connectivity side. I've learned the hard way not to base phone purchases on one or two opinions.

I originally decided on the SDA, but after looking at the MDA, I really like it--as long as the phone is good. I've gathered that the SDA is better, but is the MDA just not as good as the SDA or simply bad on its own as a phone?

Thanks.

I have installed the tweak to show me the E for edge, but it appears to only showan E now. When I check ed my speed it ranges from 51 to 84 kbs. What speeds should I receive with Edge?

if i set up a VPN profile in my connections in settings, how do i connect to that vpn?

Posted by: metalzo

From reading some of these posts it seems that uninstalling programs in WM5 is not all that simple. I like Alex's suggestion of figuring out what programs you want, and then starting from scratch. Will a hard reset achieve that? I assume a hard reset will restore the MDA to factory settings but to what extent? If you CID/SIM unlock the phone will a hard reset undo that? If you flash a new ROM will it still go back to the shipping ROM?

Posted by: mmeyer4663

"We understand your frustration when you are not able to visit the JavaScript pages. We do apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. However, Microsoft will have upgrades in future, which will enable the device to support Java, but we do not know as to when they will bring the upgrade."

Aaaaaaa, yeah, right!

Posted by: Alex301

tbrown801: I would think you should be getting higher results on an edge network but alot of factors can play into it. I have had speeds in the 80s up to the 190s depending on what size file I use for the speed test. Play around with different file sizes at www.dslreports.com/mspeed if you haven't already and see what results you get.

sflyer: I hope someone that is in your location chimes in but I have had minimal issues with Rf, call quality, and volume levels. I do most talking through a bluetooth headset but when I do use the device itself it is loud enough. I have also not heard any complaints on the other end about understanding me. The only issue I sometimes have is after I go throught he elevator at work to the parking garage and then exit the building at work, it will sometimes take a few minutes to reconnect the signal, but that isn't constant.

metalzo: Performing a hard reset essentially wipes out all software and tweaks thatt you have performed, returning it to scratch. If you flash your device with a new ROM that becomes the new base state meaning that if you hard reset again it will not go back to the T-Mo ROM. And finally, yes, the lokowitz unlocking utility from xda developers is hard reset resistant.

mmeyer4662: They haven't got a clue do they?

Done with the MDA. I love this phone, but since Wed., can not use Active Sync. I'vd done just about everything that everyone has told me. I'm done with it. I can't spend 2-3 hours a night just trying to figure out how to get the software to work. Nothing happens, still not syncing. It would be a great phone but I could have spent that money on something I know is going to work.

Posted by: WRS2K

-When I go to write a new text message or reply to one, it defaults to CAPS LOCK. How do I undo this?

-Agile Mobile doesn't automatically reconnect after I hang up the phone. My SK2 AOL would automatically reconnect once G comes back up, but not seeing the same thing happen on the MDA via Agile. I have the PocketPC 2002 version loaded since WM5 is not available just yet. Am I to just live with this or is there a solution to always stay connected when G is available?

Posted by: moschops

I had an identical experience - have been using the phone for three days now, installed some s/w Wednesday night - tweaked WiFi to enable 802.11g and got that working. Then went to work Thursday and streamed radio for several hours on battery. Before going home I charged to 100%. When I got home I noticed the battery was draining like crazy... was down to 25% within three hours of full recharge.

Closed all apps and did a soft reset - no difference. Left on charge all night and then listened to radio streamed over Edge for about 30 minutes and headed into work. Within an hour of coming off charge I was at 60% again. If this continues I'm going to have to hard-reset to rule out errant behaviour of the apps I installed (although it happens even when nothing is running). However I suspect there is some bug in the power management...

Not sure if it had been said but yea...you can use WMA as ringtones...just hold the stylus on the file and it'll say "Set as ringtone...and tell you it's been copied to rings...

Simple set up:

-Plug the cable that came with the phone on your laptop *Do not ActiveSync*
-Insert the CD that came with the phone and it will guide you through the installation of the drivers necessary for it to act as a modem.
-Next set up a new connection, follow these instructions:

I am having a problem conecting at home too. T-Mobile 3rd level tech support is stumped. Linksys 2nd level support says that the above strategy doesn't apply since I have security disabled (is that accurate?).

What happens is that my MDA finds my router SSID. However, when I tap to connect, it acts as though it is connecting, but then it goes back to "Available" instead of "Connected".

I have even tried exchanging my MDA and it does the same on the replacement.

Works fine at area hot spots.

Any ideas. T-Mo support even says they went out and bought the Linksys router and they still can't figure it out.

HELP!!

www.agilemobile.com is better than what comes with the MDA, but then i'm still not 100% sold on the program since it doesn't work like the AOL IM on SK2. It disconnects during a call just like the SK2... except unlike the Sk2 it doesn't reconnect automatically and keep those messagins in waiting for you...

tbrown801: There should be a direct link to the thread on a page in the late 40s. Or in the Pocket PC forum, look in the sticky titled Kjam Tips, hacks, etc. It is on the first few pages.

iCeman: Easy on the caps lock buddy! AIM alternatives have been discussed at length, please look around first before posting. However I don't know if any of them currently support what you are looking for. There is currently a recent thread in the Pocket PC forum titled "Best AIM application..." probably a good place to start. i don't use AIM on my device so I can't speak to the applications directly.

chix: Chalk this up to another goon job by T-Mobile on their ROM. I have the same router at home and had no problem the one time I tried to connect to it. I don't use wi-fi on this device. I believe at the time I tried it I was using the T-Mo UK ROM. The US has really botched this one. Shame because it is turning some people of a very good device. Might want to try a different ROM.

I hate to tell you this but the MDA is probably just not as convenient/powerful when it comes to AIM usage. As other people have said, Agile Messenger is better then the included app but still falls short in a few areas. So for now I would sit tight and wait for a WM5 version of Agile Messenger. If AIM is that important for you, it might just make sense to stick with the SK2 until a better WM5 solution presents itself.

Posted by: SAVAGE WAYZ

DAMN!! As much as i'd hate to, I might just have to bring this phone back. So far, the reception is horrible at home. I was hoping that it would be better than the SK2.

Is anybody else having some wierdness with e-mail on their MDA?

First, I setup my gmail account using the tmobile myemail, and used the automated setup on the MDA. I'd get some emails, and then they'd disappear.

So I deleted that account from the MDA and from the mytmo.

Then I added gmail directly to the MDA as a POP account and the same thing happens. Nothing wierd going on at my gmail account, just emails show up, then disappear on the MDA, they don't stick around whether I read them or not.

Then, since I have Total Internet with Corp Email, I set up the my tmo email using their connector to my exchange server.

Same thing happens with that account. MDA gets the emails, can send them fine, but then later, I'll get 1 new email and it'll be the only one in my inbox. My email as viewed on the my tmo web page is fine, and fine in Outlook on my PC as well.

So it seems, regardless of the type of account or how it's setup etc, that sometimes the MDA clears the inbox before getting a new email.

Anybody else seeing this?

Thanks!
MC

RE: Can't Connect To Home Wi-FI Router Linksys WRT54GX2

Since you have the same router and CAN connect via Wi-Fi, perhaps you could share some admin settings from your Linksys set up page.

It doesn't make sense that I can connect everywhere but home.

Do you mind sharing your settings?

Posted by: SAVAGE WAYZ

Does it matter which SIM card I use?? I came from the SK2 and popped in the SIM card I had in my MDA and it seems to work fine. Is this okay??

The problem more likely lies in your ROM version then in the router administration settings. Try switching to the QTEK ROM (like he has) and see if that helps.

Posted by: Alex301

chix: I don't mind sharing, but first I need to figure out to check my settings on the device, and also ill have to remember to check this weekend while I am at home. Hopefully Ill be able to get you some more information.

Posted by: unboyfriendable

One, simple question that I have not been able to find a simple answer to: Is the MDA able to connect to the internet without a data plan via the integrated wifi? Have a Treo 650 now, tmobile will not allow me to add a data plan, so I am considering getting the wifi sled for the 650, or upgrading to the mda if it can connect to the internet without upgrading my plan. Have not been able to find any clear info.....does the mda have true wifi capabilities or will they be somehow dependant on a data plan?

Posted by: Alex301

unboyfriendable: In short, yes you can connect to your home wi-fi or any open wi-fi signal for that matter without a data plan.

Maybe you guys can help me with a problem that I'm having. I have the MDA and I'm having problems syncing.

I'm using windows xp, and outlook 2003. Activesync connects but constantly says "looking for changes". I can't sync my contacts, calendar appointments, or anything else. But the funny thing is that I can install and remove software using activesync. Any idea's? What am I doing wrong?

Oh yeah, after about 10 minutes of "looking for changes", the screen displays the error message:

"Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft Activesync Troubleshooter....."

Please Help!!

Now.... How can I delete a Email account on the MDA and Also how Can I close programs when their on my Start list.

Also, Which Bluetooth headset will work with the MDA and maybe the cheapest place to get it

Posted by: Alex301

Owens: Open messagining app:

menu >> tools >> options

tap and hold on account in window, pop should come allowing you to delete.

As for closing programs, the programs in the start list should just be the ones you most recently used. Or do you mean the start up folder for after you soft reset?

I need some help with Orb. For some reason it wont streat to my MDA. I have it on port 80 (default). It works find on my cousin's computer but it also doesnt work on my other pc in my own network. my cousin's pc has its own internet connection. It is not connect to my internet. He was able to see all my music, vids, pictures, everything but when i try to use it on the MDA, i get network errors, busy network, and the such. Any ideas on how i can get this to work? I tired it with GPRS and Wi-Fi and neither one works. Does T-Mobile blcok port 80? If so, what port should I change it to. I am at lost here. any help appriciated.

i have a link to a shared video if anyone wants to help me. i'll send you the link and you can tell me if it workes for you.

And Yet another AIM alternative:

No programs that use data only can stay signed on when you are on a phone call. That is the nature of the technology. Data only programs need to poll the server, and when the data connection is cut off (i.e. you are on a phone call) and they are unable to poll the server, they log you off.

The only programs that can keep you signed on are the programs that use SMS or SMS & data. The Sidekick uses SMS and data -- the messages and buddy list updates use data, but they are triggered by a SMS sent from the server.

I'm pretty sure that the built in AIM program on the MDA works this way. Try using that one. Otherwise you will have to deal with the limitations of the data only programs.

Looks like someone posted the T-Mobile US Shipping ROM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42130

But for some reason it's not an executable like the QTEK one I downloaded from the xda FTP. Any info on when that'll be available? I ask because I want to have a backup of my ROM before I do anything and the process for backing it up on my own seems overly complex.

Posted by: Alex301

What surprises me is that T-Mo has not posted the ROM on their website. I wonder if talking with tech support could get them to send someone a copy.

Edit: On second thought this doesn't surprise me.

I doubt they'll ever do that. If you need the ROM that must mean that you've flashed it with a different ROM. Otherwise you could just do a hard reset to restore it. And I'm sure T-Mo doesn't want to encourage people putting different ROMS on their MDAs

Posted by: Alex301

Well eventually they will have to post something as an update...but hell Ill be on my next device by the time that comes around. All in all I am completely over anything remotely related to T-Mobile with the exception of using them for service only. And that will only continue as long as their data prices stay low.

uh...can this be considered EDGE speeds or what? lol never got that high before on my devices any info?

I'm with you man. I used to be a big fan but T-Mo is sadly going the way of other major carriers with 2 year contracts and everything else. I remain with them without a contract solely because of their cheap data rates. If T-Mo's prices ever get to the same level as the other major carriers, I will be switching.

You can take this off by double clicking the shift button. You can also turn the caps back on this way. You can also keep num lock on all the time if you double click the the dot button next to the tab button.

Also with the next round of devices coming out later this year that support 3G, T-Mo better get their act together.

Wow ... the tradition of horrible information continues.

* If you can't get activesync to work, don't blame the MDA. Crazy thought, read a manual, do some google searching, and spend some time on some forums that support AS (like Microsoft's own newsgroup).

* If you don't know how to use your keyboard then please call it quits. Its not like it isn't explained in detail in the book that came with the device.

* How do you people manage to confuse wifi and edge and what exactly they are? Have you been asleep for the last 5 years?

* I am blown away at the number of people who bought this device that were not fully aware of the short comings of the WM platform. I am in love with outlook and exchange 2003 so I just deal with it. But some of these posts are just lolerific. OMG MY AIM ISN'T WORKING RIGHT!!! Considering tmobile's track history with AIM and using SMS, and how GPRS/EDGE works, these ones have me busting a stitch in laughter.

* I also love the tmobile hate. Its gold. In one sentance you say that tmobile is getting as bad as the others and then you say you will switch. Switch ... to what? The ones that were already bad that tmobile has caught up to in suckness? Doesn't that mean they both SUCK? The US Cell market right now is just one big **** fest on so many different levels. At least tmobile doesn't charge you too much to take a bite out of that sandwich.

57 pages that should be closer to 10 + the manual.

Those are WiFi speeds....EDGE is not WiFi....EDGE is over the air, as in cellular/GPRS.

I hear you but what I'm saying is that IF T-Mobile's rates go up enough to be equivalent with the other carriers, I'll switch because at least they have 3G networks.

Wouldn't the Moto Razr's charger work with the MDA?

They both have the mini USB connector and both output 5 volts.

So in theory... Anybody try it? Don't want to have to carry around MDA charger if I can just leave my spare razr charger at work.

Are you sure you didn’t mistakenly set up forwarding in your g-mail settings? I don’t understand why if you deleted the accounts (you deleted the accounts from the t-mobile website right?) that you would still be getting messages to your phone?

Not sure anyone has tried this (Yes, I am still waiting for my MDA).
There is an Ext rom for the HTC Blue Angel. In the Ext Rom is a TaoJava Cab file. Here is the linke to the ext ROM:
http://relaysgoldens.com/sx66/ext_r..._1.42.126B1.rar
I know, HTC Blue Angel is a WM2003SE but might be worth a try.
It actually installed on my HP2215 (I have nothing better to do) but nothing would run. I do not have 2003SE.

chix : I'm having almost the exact same experience. My home WLAN is built around a belkin F5D8230-4 "Pre-N" (Airgo "true MIMO" platform) router. The belkin has been great for the past year. If connected with other "pre-n" devices, you get tremendous range and throughput, and it also falls back to normal 802.11g as well as 802.11b.

I tried all different settings with it last night, including WEP 64 bit, WEP 128 bit, WPA/PSK with and without TKIP, and finally NO encryption whatsoever. The MDA behaved exactly as you described: it sees the WLAN, and when I put in the credentials and click "connect", it chugs for a few seconds and reverts back to "available".

I was getting REALLY frustrated until I stopped by my local library today to see if it could hook up to their free, unprotected WLAN. Lo and behold, it immediately saw the WLAN, let me connect with a single click, and I was instantly browsing away at WiFI speeds. Turn off WiFi and it reverts back to GPRS/EDGE -- and is able to browse again that way. Works perfectly.

But still no joy at home. So I need to experiment some more. If I find something, I'll post. Otherwise I hope that somebody will find an answer and share it here with us!

Not sure if I missed it or not but was there a fix to wap sites showing up in pie? I know there have been problems with howardforums, etc...but I have looked and can't find a fix for it.

I also receive a strange message when I attempt in on Minimo as well.

Any ideas?

still learning my MDA....what do i have to do to use site like Launch.com or youtube...is it even possible? ive read about using streaming media but have had no luck so far

Is there supposed to be backlighting behind the envelope and IE button on the top part of the phone? Also on the 2 softkeys above the answer and end buttons?

Right now, only my slide-out keypad, the main screen and the answer/end buttons are backlit.

Nope -- everything you see is correct. Take a close look at the phone under a bright light: tilt it back away from you a bit so the light reflects strongly on the envelope, or the "e" (explorer symbol) or the "dashes" on the softkey buttons. You'll see that the four of these are actually black paint (or whatever opaque industrial material they use to apply lettering on the surface of this device) -- not like the translucent material on the answer and end buttons.

That is a shame because it would have been a nice addition to the phone.

It would have yes, but the good thing about it is that those buttons are customizable so you can change them to do what you want them to do. And if you wish you can remove the paint from those buttons using the sugar cube method, its a pia but it can be done.

If they were backlit you probably could still change them but you'd be stuck with the logos for the buttons all of the time.

Go to my t-mobile and delete the account from there. If you want to add gmail to your phone without the text messages, set it up as a pop3 account and change the polling settings to every 1-60 minutes. Granted its not push email but it gets the job done.

Also do not forget to change the settings in your gmail account otherwise you will not receive any pop email.

On mine it appears as if the grey color is painted over the black. I scratched at it with my fingernails and the grey is over the black. That is why I thought it was backlit. Good, then mine is not broken.

I had the same issue withe Belkin Pre-N - when I set up the security (WEP 128K) it connects fine! It worlds fine with a D-Link G and a Linksys G with no security enabled. The Belkin is the best wireless router I've used - never drops and doesn't seem bothered by all the other wireless networks around me from neighbors.

Posted by: ilrosewood

You dont have problems because you flood the spectrum with that thing.

Also ... why are you crazy people using WEP on your routers? http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=43 and make sure you read the article he links to at the end on how to setup your security.

For the record, my MDA works fine on both WEP networks (when I dont **** up the key) and WPA networks. I am sure that you could hack the registry to allow you to paste into password fields.

Mark --

You're saying that an MDA will connect to your Belkin Pre-N with 128bit WEP turned on (assuming the router is set to "mixed" mode - b / g)?

Question -- when you specified the WEP key on the MDA, did you do it in ASCII or hex (which would appear identical to the hex entry for the corresponding key on the router wireless security screen)?

I was about to try the registry hacks I've been reading about for the MDA that let you enable 802.11g as well as b. I figured that would let the MDA connect to the Belkin at "g" speeds and probably improve compatibility in the process.

I originally decided on the SDA, but after looking at the MDA, I really like it--as long as the phone is good. I've gathered that the SDA is better, but is the MDA just not as good as the SDA or simply bad on its own as a phone?

Thanks.

The MDA is nowhere near what the SDA is in terms of RF. Its not AWFUL, but its not the stunning performer the SDA happens to be.

Whether this bothers you is up to your area. But there are definitely places that I can't get signal with the MDA that the SDA not only shows plenty but will hold calls without any static or breakup.....

Re: "flood the spectrum" -- that's really NOT what "pre-N" does -- what you're describing is more like D-Link's "Super G", which really can pollute the spectrum and compromise neighboring networks. Airgo's approach is much more elegant, and is actually a "good neighbor" to other nearby WLANs.

Re: WEP -- yeah -- it's definitely gotten easier to crack. The way my property and neighborhood is set up, unless the "bad guy" is one of the half dozen people who live less than a quarter mile from me, it's going to tough for somebody to find a spot to settle down and hack into my WLAN. Only one or two public roads -- very suburban, very visible, and any car stopped along the side (virtually no shoulders) would stick WAY out. With giant directional antennas and amplifiers somebody could, no doubt, do it, but we're getting closer to the territory of little gain for big effort.

Once I get things working, it's easy enough to switch over to WPA, so I'll probably do that.

You prolly want Verichat for this. I know that on the Treo 650 it did what you desire.

I haven't fidddle enough with Agile messenger or the built in AIM app to tell you that they'll function but reading the forum indicates to me that they will not.

Note that while Verichat isn't free I can report that it works almost exactly like it did on the Treo, that it uses data and can use SMS in the event that Data is not available.

*edit* I just tried it and it does kind of work... the IM's I sent to the AIM account I have configured on the phone from another AIM account didn't get there or get cached while I was on the phone as they should but it did reconnect by itself when I ended the call and I was able to send IM's from Verichat.

Guess Verichat falls into the "doesn't work as expected" category as well.

Alex,

If I'm understanding the question and answer properly you're basically saying that the US MDA will do 64 bit WEP but not 128 bit WEP? That explains why I can't connect to the WAP at work with the MDA - we use a 128 bit ascii code.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if T-Mo US fixes this and maybe adds Java to the phone in the next ROM.

Any early thoughts on T-Mo making new ROM's available for download and self-install or are they going to make us ship the phones in?

On your phone go to start/My E-mail
In My E-mail select the option to download the e-mail settings. It will find your gmail account, you click on it, and your done.

When I tried this the T-Mo mail configurator failed to connect and required me to select either Outlook or OE or enter the settings myself.

Not wanting to download the T-Mo stuff and let it suck the settings out of outlook I chose to try configuring it myself but since gmail uses a custom SSL port it didn't seem to want to work.

Did you download the Outlook hoover program from T-Mo and run it or did it just work from email address/password for you?

*edit* never mind... custom settings worked on the 6th attempt

So, I've had a K-Jam for the last 4 months and love the form factor and keyboard. Anyhow, I bought the T-mobile MDA on the 21st due to an easier to obtain support from T-mobile rather than i-mate. Everything was great and the MDA even had better color balance than the K-JAM's bluish tint. White's were whites and blacks were truly blacks with no bluish hue. All good so far. Then I had put on screen protector from ppctechs just like my K-JAMs and noticed that the screen on the MDA was much harder to press and the screen sesitivity was really low..unlike my k-jam which has perfect screen sesitivity and there's no need to push hard on the screen. When I tap the K-jam screen, the upper layer screen instantly touches the sensors below while on the MDA, pushing the upper layer of the screen revealed that the layer had to travel farther down before hitting the touch sensors. The PPCtech tech confirmed that this was abnormal and that the screen on the MDA was farther from the touch sensors requiring a harder push. This bothered me and I ended up getting another MDA which had the same problem. So I returned that second MDA and for the time being decided to stick with the K-JAM.

Are any of you guys having touch sensitivity issues with your MDA's or 8125? I'm not sure if I should try to go for another MDA and maybe check out the screen at the store before walking out. Any thoughts or this screen sensitivity variation is normal between devices. Thanks for your input!

128-bit WEP absolutely does work on both the SDA and MDA.

The 1 out of the 4 wanted me to confugure it with their program. I didn't, I called CS and they quickly applied the settings and it worked like the others.

In between posting thoughts up here re: WiFi on the MDA, I searched a few websites on the topic.

First -- although I hadn't been able to connect to my home WLAN, I HAD been able to effortlessly connect up to the 802.11b Linksys WLAN in my local library.

Came back home, tried every encryption / security protocol, and also tried turning off security altogether. Still couldn't connect.

So I just tried something I read about on XDA-Developers site: adding a single DWord value to a registry key to enable 802.11g in the MDA. This has been tested and demonstrated to work on the other HTC Wizard variants, and it looked like it was worth a try, so...

I downloaded a test version of the Resco Explorer and registry editor, added the single DWord value, did a soft reset, and....(drumroll goes here).....

It works!!! I can now connect effortlessly to my Belkin Pre-N router at home, and surfing on the MDA is suddenly snappy!

What a pleasure. This is too cool. I haven't forced my router into pure "G" mode yet, but the other posts I've read confirm that this single registry tweak does, indeed, let the MDA communicate at real "G" speeds. I'm just thrilled that I'm now able to connect at home and elsewhere just as easily.

So...anyone else interested in trying this - here's the link to the thread discussing the registry change:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898

Enjoy!

OK. After reading over 200 pages of the forums for the last 4 days since I picked up my MDA, I have a few questions (Yes... I've read every page of this thread, as well as the SDA/MDA launch thread ).

I have a grandfathered 4.99 T-zones plan and set up my MDA with the wap.voicestream.com connection with Proxy. I've also done the EDGE "E" icon registry hack. I still get the "G" Icon and slow 44kbps rates.

I've tried the internet2.voicestream.com and internet3.voicestream.com addresses in place of the wap.voicestream.com with no luck. I'm told that I "cannot connect for an unknown reason..." I live in north-central New Jersey and was told by a CSR that EDGE was available. I was just wondering if anyone knows if Tmo has blocked the proxy workaround for EDGE using T-zones in the NY/NJ market?

Also, anyone know of a "location manager" app? right now, to switch from GPRS to WiFi, I have to set my connection to a "nothing" account I set up with no modem connection info, then turn on WiFi. This forces the MDA to skip GPRS and go to a Wifi connection. (otherwise, if I keep my working GPRS connection active, it uses that to connect).

FINALLY... *Deep breath* is there a way to set up the email accounts to use whatever the active connection is (WiFI or GPRS)? I've had to set up 2 yahoo accounts (one defaults to GPRS, the other defaults to WiFi) and choose the appropriate account to check depending on the current connection.

OK.. that's it for now... my eyes are shot from reading.. bed time. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...

mike

I have the same Belkin router Jonazen has, and I'm experiencing the same problem. I tried putting in the new DWORD into the registry, did a soft reset, nothing happened. I installed the HTC helper application that was originally listed in that thread, and nothing has happened either. I am still seeing that my network (I have taken off all security, all I have is an SSID) is Available, but when i hold the stylus down and click connect, it goes connecting... and then it goes back to Available.

Does anyone have any idea what might be happening? And what I should do? Thanks.

Ok well I found an answer, after searching everywhere for it. To enable wap sites to be viewed ie: wap.howardforums.com if your having trouble do this:

Download and install the PHM Registry Editor for Pocket PC (http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/).

1) Close/End the Pocket Internet Explorer process.

2) Using PHM Registry editor access the below registry key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings

3) You should see a String Value named "Accept Header" (if it is not present create it), append the below text to its value:

,text/vnd.wap.wml

4) Click on Okay.

5) Launch Pocket Internet Explorer and make an attempt to browse HFME

After doing so I now am able to view the wap hofo site

I am not sure if the hack saves yet since the first time I did it wrong and then did a soft reset, but for now it is a solution. Give it up for the search button

edit: well I was just going to some different sites and although the above hack works for the wap hofo site, all of the other sites I go to no longer display any images. So I guess it is a fix but there seems to be too much to sacrifice so I deleted the hack and am now postin wifi and searching for a better option.

Sort of. Have a look at this article on my HTC Wizard Blog. There you will find a program called Smartskey that will allow you to open the Start Menu by holding the left Soft Button.

The program has been updated with some nice new features and configurable options. And best of all, it now has overclocking integrated!

I am kind of in the same boat, but I do get Edge with the proxy workaround. i do not however get my email the same way. Without the proxy, your emails should be set to connect through the internet in email options (i think this allows them to connect via whatever internet source you are using, wifi or gprs). With the proxy hack, they have to be set to connect through GPRS. I think that is why you have to manualy select each time. try turning your proxy off, and see what it does for your email.

Anybody know how to get email to work through internet with the proxy settings? By not working, it does not allow me to use email triggering.....

THANKS!

Thanks Rusk. The reason I have the 2 account is because one email is set to connect through GPRS and the other through "The Internet", i.e., WiFi. When I'm using WiFi, the GPRS connection is disabled. I created a "nothing" Network which I has no "connections". This forces my MDA to go through WiFi when I have it active. If I don't have the "nothing" network set, it ignores the WiFi and goes through the GPRS.

I have gone through every setting and tried so many combinations and permutations with settings. Am I missing something?

The only other thing I did in the midst of my experiments was to totally delete the connection on the MDA between attempts and changes in parameters. I don't know if WM suffers from this syndrome, but I know that Windows on the PC often caches bad information, so I've gotten used to little precautionary measures like this. Don't know if it will make a difference for you.

Since adding the dword in the registry, I've been able to connect to the Belkin "pre-n" (F5D8230-4) with no security and with WPA-PSK / TKIP. I'll go back later and try WEP again, but it seems that whatever was wrong here is fixed now.

If I don't have the "nothing" network set, it ignores the WiFi and goes through the GPRS.

I have gone through every setting and tried so many combinations and permutations with settings. Am I missing something?

I don't have my wi-fi set up yet, but that makes sense. With proxy, you have to have your mail set to connect through GPRS, thus if you are on wi-fi, it will still want to connect through GPRS. I wonder why the proxy settings will not allow us to connect to our email with the "internet" setting? Anybody?

Also, do you have to have an internet plan for email triggering to work? I thought is wasn't working because of the proxy settings, but when there off, I can still get my mail (with the "internet" setting), but the email triggers still don't work. It also seems as though mytmo is deleting those messages from the server before I get them. It's almost as if it did send a message to my phone to trigger a retrieval, but my phone never got the emails, but the server still deleted the mail...... Are there any more proxy settings to work around this?

Also #2, I have one account set up to check for mail every 5min (just set it up through pop, not mytmo), it will connect and check, but it will not turn GPRS off when it is done. Is this normal?

well i bought the mda on the 21st but still have a couple of questions that hopefully someone could answer:
*Can we install micromedia flash player to this device? you will need this if you want to watch videos like @ launch.com
*why do we need java on the device other than for games?
*bt version 1.2 vs 2.0?
*if we hack on the registry to upgrade wifi b to g, would this drain the battery more?
*what would drain the battery faster wifi on or gprs, edge on?

Posted by: jon01

anyone know of a way or a program that gives you the auto off feature. this feature and push email are the things i miss the most about my blackberry 7100t. i use mail2web.com for my push email and it works great, now i just need the auto off/on. any ideas?

Java's other "big use" is Google Local, and you know you want it

Wifi on "g" does not drain the battery more.

GPRS/Edge drains the battery less than Wifi

Thanks...

mike

Sorry mate, thats how this thing ... works. You get two connections at any given time. Internet and work. Programs are supposed to know if they are internet or work programs. By selecting the network (Tmobile GPRS) in the system settings, you are saying "everything internet use these settings" and "everything work use these settings" which includes using GPRS and the proxy.

If you want different network settings, you have to switch them. For a connection manager? Thats it. It has taken me a bit to get used to it.

Outlook on your laptop is looking for your MDA named as it was before you did the heard reset. You might have to delete the original partnership and create a new one.

Turn off the contact sync from ActiveSync, then turn it back on. There's a bug in AS where on a new peer relationship it won't sync contacts unless you do this (once)

That's Edge speed. GPRS speed was around 35Kb/s if my memory is working correctly today

I like the MDA so far, but the RF is weird.

I'm a doctor who does some procedures using radiologic guidance, so I wear a lead apron and do these procedures in a led lined room with a bunch of other equipment around me. In the middle of a case yesterday, my phone happily starts ringing. My MDA was clipped to my belt (under the led apron)!

Then, last night, my wife and I were entertaining, and I of course had the phone on so if people called I could tell them where to park, etc. This was in a clubhouse/gameroom we have access too, in a different building than our own. I live in downtown Dallas. I had to leave the phone next to a window to even get 1.5 bars.

Overall, MDA is good for my purposes, but I just don't get the RF thing.

Can anyone confirm that the 2 GB miniSDs work on the MDA yet?

Ugh... sim cards. *chuckle* always buy phones that sync with Outook

Doesn't look like it to me. Mebbe with a Sim Card reader connected to a PC?

Posted by: foofighter

had my imate kjam since november and now that i'm working for t-mob in their network development i thought it would be a good move to switch from cingular to tmob and i ended up getting the MDA. connection to grps/edge is pretty good, at least more consistent than the CW network.

I installed my agile messenger and it works for me so i'm happy with it

I have a question though, i was looking at my internet plan and it says total internet w/ hotspot. I dont recall that being an option.

Now i have a relatively new KJAM for sale

Posted by: SAVAGE WAYZ

Wow...As much as I hate to do it, it looks like the MDA will be going back. The reception I get at home is ridiculous!! Anyone else getting bad reception with their MDA? My area is supposed to get close to great coverage as well

Posted by: Ruskastud

Will agile messenger work if you are running with the proxy settings? For some reason I can't get it to connect.

Posted by: kdenninger

No - you need a real internet plan to use Agile.

T-Mobile is slowly closing down the hacks that allow cheating as well - so don't expect ANY of them to work for long..... this device is likely to GREATLY accelerate their interest in shutting off those who are using T-zones proxies for things they shouldn't be!

Not that I know of. Contacts on the SIM suck anyway since they can't have any associated data with them (like voice tags, etc)

I just don't want to lose my contacts, though very few. I've never used SIM so I don't know a thing about it, how it works, etc.

Ditto here - having no problem at all with a WEP network, and WPA-TKIP at work. But I have seen a case twice in the last 5 days where the WEP key for my home network appeared to have been "forgotten" and I had to re-enter. At that point, yes, I'd love to be able to paste into the password fields - drives me nuts!

People having problem connecting to their APs should try enabling the 802.11g on the device - it might help get connectivity (that's what I have) especially as some APs are set up as G-only (which you generally shouldn't do unless you are sure there are no B networks around that might interfer).

Can anyone confirm that Active sync and push email works if your server is Exchange 2000 and not 2003?

Alright, search is useless.

Can somebody tell me how I can change the IE Mobile tag to show as a normal browser instead of getting mobile formated sites?.

Posted by: foofighter

my understanding is the new ROM update will make it so you will have true PUSH mail like the crackberry.

Posted by: bozer

Well.. nevermind PUSH. Can active sync work at all when your exchange server is 2000? As of now, the only way I can get this MDA working with my corporate email is to have the email sent to Tmobile.com, and then my MDA pulls it from there. The majority of the time, it doesn't even work this way either. Treo's and Blackberrys in my office get everything from sprint business connect/desktop redirector. Using this MDA to get my email is my main goal, but apparently it only works if your Exchange server is 2003.

I've had the MDA since Tuesday and noticed in the same location in my apartment I can get no signal up to full signal. The little dot under the antenna symbol is one bar. Sometimes it'll search for hours till it finds a signal where moments ago it had signal. You can try upgrading the firmware and see if it'll increase reception but it'll also void the warranty.

The reception behavior is comparable to Motorola RAZR which also have embedded antenna. There is a rubber plug on the back that allows you to hook an external car antenna when driving. Only time will tell if someone on ebay will start selling some type of antenna attachment.

Your other option is try this.
http://www.wirelessextenders.com/
Its selling for around $180 on ebay.

It ships with two stylus' so if you lose one you have a spare. The slot mine goes into seems to be holding up well so far.

I bought a screen protector from proporta.com - someone else in this 65+ page thread recommended them... you want this screen protector according to the gentleman I spoke with at Proporta:

Thanks ilrosewood... sucks about the location manager. I can get used to going through the dozen screens to switch locations, I guess. If I could figure out a way to get a shortcut to switch the network connection faster, it wouldn't be that bad.

Now to figure out if the old $4.99 T-zones allows for EDGE in my area, or whether Tmo blocked me from the internet2 and internet3 APNs: only wap.voicestream.com works.

Finally had a moment to get to DSLReports and test the speed of my connection now that I have the 802.11g enabling DWord added to the MDA's registry. Not sure how this fits other people's observations, but here's what I got, when connecting via my Belkin pre-n router:

924 kbit/sec
0.148s latency

(This was after running the 600kb test.)

There are a couple of cache optimizations I've read about that are supposed to speed things up as well. Haven't tried these yet...maybe later this weekend.

I read about the approach in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=38898

So far, though, I haven't downloaded and run the program that the thread describes. It's simple -- apparently just making a few registry changes. But I wanted to try the changes one at a time, and wasn't sure I wanted to do them all.

The only chg I made was to:

1) Locate the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS

2) Add a DWord value to it:

name: dot11SupportedRateMaskG
value: 8

That's it -- then I did a soft reset (use the tip of the stylus to press the microswitch in the tiny hole next to your infrared port on the right side of the device. Ever since I did that, I can now connect to my Belkin home router (which was, oddly enough, set to "mixed mode", supporting both "b" and "g" - but the MDA still couldn't connect before) as well as public free hotspots.

Seems to working beautifully. When I disable WiFi, it simply reverts back to GPRS for internet connections.

I had a similar problem. Here's what I did:

-Connect your MDA to your computer.
-Open up your MDA on your computer by clicking Explore after the sync has finished.
-Navigate to your Windows/Rings folder.
-Place the audio file you want as your ringtone in there.
-On your MDA, go to Settings, and then to Phone
-You should see the filename of the audio file you placed in the Rings folder under the list of available ringtones.

I don't know if you can set a ringtone to an audio file that will play from an SD card, it appears you have to copy it to the device itself.

If I'm not mistaken, once you redirect audio like that, you cannot also use bluetooth to initiate voice dialing -- if memory serves, it's one or the other using the BT audio channel.

System sounds need to be either a wav or midi, I couldn't get MP3's to work. I put all my replacement wavs in my document folder to sync, then once it was on the MDA I used Resco Explorer to move them into the WINDOWS folder. If you are using mp3's and wavs for ringtones they can go in the ringtone folder.

Also, has anyone with a Tmobile MDA tried to upgrade the ROM? i'm tempted to do it, but i dont want to be the first

Seems like it just changes it for New contacts. But there has to be a way to change it for existing contacts. You'd think this would be a lot simpler than it is.

Interesting...I've been seeing those few complaints about RF also, and they just don't match my experience. RF is better than my SE Z600, and seems to be at least as good as, if not better than, my Nokia 6101, 3220, 3390 and 8290. The 3390, btw, was known for being one of the really solid phones in this area. My MDA really seems to outperform them all. I've been driving around a LOT, I've been in a LOT of buildings over the last couple of days, and I just haven't lost a signal yet, even where I'd expect to. It's not magic, but my MDA sure seems to have excellent RF.

I posted some pictures before showing the RF compared to my vx8100 and yes it is better...I was surprised that people said that the MDA would have bad RF or not as good as the SDA but its just perfect for me...

I have gmail set up to pole every 30 minutes in and then email downloads. If I leave it in my inbox (unread) so I can view it later online or if I read the message and dont delete it, when the account poles again my inbox is cleared of the read messages and only the newly downloaded messages appear. They do stay in my online gmail but not in pocket outlook? Is there a reason for this? Is there a setting that changes this?

Posted by: Jay Raptor

its a problem with gmail not the device. as far as i know there's nothing you can do about it

Posted by: jonazen

I know it's been discussed here, but I've tried browsing through hundreds of pages, and I'm not finding the answer ... maybe I'm just too tired now?

Anyway... GPRS works - I can browse various websites with no problem. WiFi works at home, at the library, at Panera, and tonight I found that while eating dinner in a local restaurant, I was able to pick up the WLAN from the hotel next door and browse via that. I have the 802.11g registry entry set so that faster speeds are enabled. All of this is great.

But... I can't send an MMS. Could well be that I'm too tired and muddled now, and mixed up the GPRS settings. I'll try to describe what I've got, and maybe one of you will recognize the problem (I hope!):

Under Settings / Connections / Connections, on the "tasks" tab I select "manage existing connection" under the top "connections group" -- it's currently titled, "T-Mobile GPRS".

On the T-Mobile GPRS page that comes up next, I have two connections entered:

1) "T-Mobile Internet":
- under "select a modem" I have selected "Cellular Line (GPRS)
- clicking next, I can see "internet2.voicestream.com" set as the APN
- on the next page: user name, password and domain are all blank
- clicking "advanced" shows that I am using DHCP

2) "T-Mobile GPRS" is the second connection name:
- modem is "Cellular Line (GPRS)
- APN is "wap.voicestream.com"
- User name, Password and Domain are all blank
- using DHCP to fill in the rest of the blanks

Backing out to the first screen where I can see both connections listed one above the other, I have "auto pick" checked instead of a specific connection.

On the proxy server tab, I have "connects to the Internet" checked, but I am NOT specifying a proxy server. Should I be doing that again? Is it necesary?

Anything else missing or look wrong?

TIA...

Wap.voicestream.com for all connections will fix that.

Ask your admin to get pop3 or imap access. I dont know why they would block that.

Learn to use outlook as the backup.

Now to figure out if the old $4.99 T-zones allows for EDGE in my area, or whether Tmo blocked me from the internet2 and internet3 APNs: only wap.voicestream.com works.

Click on the icon at the top that shows the connecting and settings is right there. When I had my first PPC, I wanted to be able to use VPNs more. Yea, that doesn't work so well.

Also, has anyone with a Tmobile MDA tried to upgrade the ROM? i'm tempted to do it, but i dont want to be the first

No, you will get a G. Look at the registry setting. You just enabled the E option.

Also, I don't want to upgrade the ROM for awhile. Not until I can see info that isn't burried in a billion page forum where on page one billion and 73 someone says "Oh actually, this doesn't work because it breaks your ability to breath" or something. Patients my friends. Patients.

Ive actually noticed this. Its not that Im seeing sensativity but that there is a gap. I know in some older ipaqs this caused a problem for dirt build up! That is my concern. I don't have nearly that gap in my Axim. I bet the wrong screen protector + that gap could be trouble for some.

Not much has been said about the camera around here.

I know I have been very pro MDA but I have to say I am about disapointed with the camera application. I guess a bit with the Camera itself but I Didn't expect much, even from a 1.3mp camera.

This camera application can just blow me quite frankly. I've only had to soft reset my phone twice, and both times have been when the camera application has locked everything up. Also, using it sans stylus to do things like turn of the flash is a joke.

Speaking of the flash, I would love to have a one touch button for that thing. Its not a bad flashlight

Also, with Tmobile's new assrific voicemail system, is there a way for the MDA to know that there is more than one voicemail waiting for me?

This probably has come up before but i can't find it. How do you disable the SIP keyboard. Gets annoying after every tab and it pops up and takes up nearly half the screen.
Can someone direct me to the registry entry.
Thanks

Great, makes me rethink using gmail and going back to yahoo....if I can figure out how to spoof the from and reply to address I will. Thanks for the confirmation

Edit: Well I did do some searching on the gmail help forum and a user posted that if you change the setting to receive headers only and then check the box below to receive part of the message and set the setting to 999k, the messages should stay in your inbox on your device.

Have not received emails yet so I will let you know if it works sometime tomorrow. It would suck not to get all of an email but if you are away from your phone at least you can see what came in while you were gone rather than an empty inbox.

Please pardon my ignorance for this stupid question. How exactly do you go into the registry and perform these simple hacks?

you need a program like total commander or some registry editor. check http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=856404 for basic apps to use.

I've been trying to get Tzones with proxy working on a friend's MDA. Best I can tell where I enter the proxy server it has space for an IP but if I attach :8080 after it, it cuts it off and that's why it's not working? Ideas?

I have an SDA and it works fine on it.

Thanks - I'll try that -- I've got the Internet Add-On plan (functionally equivalent to total internet, but minus the hotspots). Will I need the proxy, or can I just connect directly to the Internet?

Goto: Connection settings and change the APN: internet2.voicestream.com (non vpn) internet3.voicestream.com (VPN and employee lines)

I think you mean "Patience". LOL, Unless you guys are doctors. LOL- Just busting chops.

I know what you guys mean, I don't want to flash my MDA just yet. Gotta give it atleast a few months before I will do that.

i have installed the cab, and google local still does not show up. says your web browser does not fully support google local.

and it gives you a midlet manager, but it will fail to load google local, but it will install google local as a midlet. 1 step closer i guess!

I was told that there was only one plan and that is the one with hotspot. $30 dollars a month. I had to get it even though I don't use the hotspot at all.
how much do you pay and do you get unlimited edge downloads?

GOOGLE LOCAL / MIDLET!

i have been trying to get a midlet installer to actually work, but it seems this is the only way, the only problem is that i cant find all the software needed, anyone else wanna try, or help. here

http://www.ammie-home.com/files/topicpost-en.gif
gotten from
http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=109

here is another link to how to get google mobile, but you will first need a midlet program

http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4559.html

this may also help, i can get a midlet installer working, but can get google local to work after it has been installed

There is an Ext rom for the HTC Blue Angel. In the Ext Rom is a TaoJava Cab file. Here is the linke to the ext ROM:

I know, HTC Blue Angel is a WM2003SE but might be worth a try.
It actually installed on my HP2215 (I have nothing better to do) but nothing would run. I do not have 2003SE.

I have managed to get the Midlet Manager working, but it required flashing with a different ROM. I was then able to reload the T-Mobile customizations back on the unit, so I didn't "lose" anything.

Works ok, but its definitely the "long way home."

Posted by: true_atlantis

could you install google local?

Posted by: true_atlantis

is there a way to uninstall a .cab file if it is not in the uninstall list?

Please help. I cannot get my MDA to work with my home WiFi network. I've not tried other WiFi elsewhere yet. Thought if home works then I'll get more ambitious. I've seen the posts regarding the tweaks for b/g allowing people to finally connect with their Belkin routers, but I'm still running b only so don't need anything so fancy.

I have a lowly 2WIRE router and when I click on "Network Cards" it shows a list of all WiFi wireless routers in my building that it can detect, each one that is available is listed as "AVAILABLE" of course. Mine is 2WIRE807, and I guess since that one provides the stongest signal it shows "CONNECTING" next to it.

I then go to PIE and try to get online via WiFi, but PIE kicks up the GPRS and prefers to go that route. I guess this is because it is not able to use the WiFi signal its supposed to be receiving?

90% of the AVAILABLE ones have a little lock next to the broadcast icon. Mine (2WIRE807) does as well. Could this be the problem?

I'm assuming there is some simple fix that a noob like me needs help with. Thanks.

the lock means that the connection is encrypted (wep or wpa) you need to enter in the key for your router. did you set up your router?
