Or it could be the same issue as this:

So far, though, I haven't downloaded and run the program that the thread describes. It's simple -- apparently just making a few registry changes. But I wanted to try the changes one at a time, and wasn't sure I wanted to do them all.

The only chg I made was to:

1) Locate the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS

2) Add a DWord value to it:

name: dot11SupportedRateMaskG
value: 8

That's it -- then I did a soft reset (use the tip of the stylus to press the microswitch in the tiny hole next to your infrared port on the right side of the device. Ever since I did that, I can now connect to my Belkin home router (which was, oddly enough, set to "mixed mode", supporting both "b" and "g" - but the MDA still couldn't connect before) as well as public free hotspots.

Seems to working beautifully. When I disable WiFi, it simply reverts back to GPRS for internet connections.

But I DL'd Total Commander, and I am trying to figure out how you get to the "HKEY_......" and "Create a new DWord"?

seriously download the registry wizard it has all the HOT tweaks installed and it just takes a check of the box and you're done...i did that last night and it's friggin awesome.

I realize that's what I need to do. But I am new to this registry stuff and don't know how to get to the "HKEY_......" and "Create a new DWord" in Total Commander.

Can you help?

I am stuck with how to get to do and what to do with this fix in Total Commander:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS

Again, sorry to be such a noob to this, but I would really appreciate your help

Ah! This sorta illustrates the problem. I had mentioned that I couldn't seem to send MMS, although I *could* browse the web via GPRS.

Well...I spent some time on the phone with T-Mobile "PDA Support" and finally have this figured out! There's been talk here about using the two different APN's available to T-Mobile Internet customers for WAP and MMS versus regular website browsing.

When I spoke with T-Mobile PDA Support, I was told a few things:
1) they've had some network problems that aren't 100% resolved that could be messing up our ability to browse the net, consistently get EDGE speeds, or send MMS messages.

2) MMS is supposed to be sent over their WAP gateway, so for this, you should use "wap.voicestream.com" as your APN.

3) Web browsing for full HTML web pages is supposed to be done over their non-protocol-restricted internet gateway, so for this, you should specify "internet2.voicestream.com" as the APN.

I did some experimenting, and it seems that I cannot send MMS when I connect via "internet2.voicestream.com", and I cannot browse the web when I connect via "wap.voicestream.com". But, as the gentleman from T-Mobile PDA Support suggested, when I chose the APN appropriate to the task, I succeeded. I tried this several times with consistent results.

I think I saw some discussion here about manually selecting the GPRS connection each time so you get the right gateway. But with a bit of configuration work up front, you can make this work automatically. Here's how:

The essence of the solution is that you should have TWO different connection setting groups - one for Internet Browsing and email, and one for MMS. Then, you can have the first one automatically invoked when your application tries to connect to the Internet, and you can have the MMS application automatically select the second connection group when it's trying to send an MMS message.

So -- Most, if not all, of you have a connection group named "T-Mobile GPRS". To examine it, click on:

Start / Settings / Connections and then tap the Connections icon. With the Tasks tab selected, you should see two connection groups listed, along with three choices under each one for tasks you can perform.

Under the connection group named "T-Mobile GPRS", click "Manage existing connections" -- you should be on the "Modem" tab -- if not, select it now.

This page shows a table in which you can list various network connections that this connection group can use to send and receive data. Since it seems that the three APNs that we know about are special purpose (one for WAP/MMS, one for Internet, one for VPN), it does NOT make sense to mix them here and let WM5 try to figure out which is best to use -- you will wind up with inconsistent results (i.e., works sometimes, but not others, seemingly at random).

Instead, since this "T-Mobile GPRS" connection group is for Internet browsing, the one and only connection you want to specify here is one that will use the "internet2" APN.

But first, click on the "Proxy Settings" tab below, and just click the box labeled, "This network connects to the Internet", and make sure the other boxes on the pages are blank (no proxy server specified here!). When you're done, select the "Modem" tab again (you might have to minimize the keyboard display at the bottom to see the tabs).

If you don't have a data connection yet that uses the internet2 APN, you can click on "New", then give it a descriptive name (such as "Internet connection"), select "Cellular Line (GPRS)" as the modem, click "Next", and input "internet2.voicestream.com" as the APN, click "Next" again, leave the user name, password and domain all blank and click "finish".

Click "ok" at the top a couple of times and you should be done with the connection group that gets you to the Internet.

Now - we'll create a separate connection group for MMS:

Go back into "Start / Settings / Connections" and tap the "Connections" icon again. You're back at the "Connections" screen that lists your two most recently defined "connection groups" -- the top one should be "T-Mobile GPRS" since we just worked on it. Click on "Add a new modem connection". Even though this line appears under "T-Mobile GPRS", you'll actually be creating a new and separate connection group.

You'll see a screen entitled, "Make a New Connection". Give it a meaningful name -- I chose "WAP connection". Select "Cellular Line (GPRS)" as the modem, and click "Next". This time, under Access Point Name, specify "wap.voicestream.com". Click next and make sure on the "My Connection" screen that user, password and domain are blank, then click "Finish".

You will now have separate connection groups for Internet Access and for MMS tranmission.

The next step is what makes this work automatically. Close all the windows until you're at the "today" screen again. Click "Start" and then "Messaging". If you don't see "MMS" at the top left of the screen, click the "Menu" button at the lower right, click on "Switch Accounts" and select "MMS".

Click "Menu" again, and then click "MMS Configuration...". You'll see three tabs: "Preferences", "Servers" and "About".

The preferences tab has non-critical choices that you should set to meet your own needs.

On the Servers tab, you should see a single server listed, "T-Mobile MMS" -- this was installed by one of the T-Mobile customizations when you first booted up your MDA. Click on this , and you'll see a screen that details the configurat ion of this server. Here's what you want in the config:

Server Name: non-critical, T-Mobile named it, "T-Mobile MMS", so you should probably leave it at that.

Gateway: 216.155.165.50

Port Number: 8080

Server address: http://215.155.174.84/servlets/mms

...and HERE is where we tell it to automatically switch to our network connection that was set up for MMS:

Where it says, "Connect via:", the default that T-Mobile put in was your old "T-Mobile GPRS" connection. Instead, I clicked the drop-down arrow and selected the new connection that we created way up above that references the "wap.voicestream.com" APN, called something like "MMS Connection".

Sending size limitation as locked at 292k. WAP Version defaults to 2.0, but you can drop it down to 1.2 if you have some reason to do this (I don't).

Once this is all set right, click "OK", and "ok" your way back out of the messaging application.

Now you're ready for a test:

There are many way to initiate an MMS. However you do it, when it starts up, you should see it connecting to GPRS via your "MMS Connection", it will then send your MMS and disconnect from GPRS again after a bit.

Open up PIE again and select a website, and this time you'll see GPRS connecting via your first connection group -- the one that uses "internet2.voicestream.com" as the APN.

You can go back and forth several times -- this setup will select the correct network connection group each time, and work.

The ONLY issue I've seen with this is the following:

If your GPRS connection for one type of activity is still connected when you try launching the other service, it doesn't seem smart enough to force the old connection to disconnect first. So...if your old connection hasn't time out yet, you may have to click on the "G" icon (top of your today screen) and select "disconnect" before starting your other activity. But that's it -- aside from this, all the APN switching is automatic -- and works perfectly.

Enjoy!

Great well I am glad it worked, I still could not confirm if it did or not because I lost my internet this morning and was without it all day so I am on the phone with tmo support as I type.

But I am glad this does work, it took me all of 2 hours to find anything on it.

What you were told is, officially, true now. They had a plan for $19.99 that give you full unlimited GPRS/EDGE access and unlimited email, but they officially phased that out. However when I got in touch with them a couple of weeks ago, it was still listed on their website -- even though the new plan was as well -- and I was just very persistent, insisting that they were still offering it online. I was put on hold a few times, had to do this over a couple of phone calls, but eventually a supervisor gave in and signed me up. I really don't know if they've closed off this loophole or not at this point -- as of now, the plan I'm on is considered "grandfathered"

for those interested i thought i'd share my experiences so far, and ask one question

edge / gprs
once i switched to internet2.voicestream.com, my edge and gprs browsing have been excellent and flawless. with poor connections i get around 40kbs and with full bars, good area, i get around 145kbs. i am very happy with this.

rf
as others have experienced, the rf can be occasionally inconsistent, but over all this phone has been superior to my Moto A630 and SE T610. it is easy to compare because i have used all three phone in several of the same places and can easily compare them. in particular my girlfriend's apt. in Portland is a virtual cell dead zone and my A630 was almost always with out signal. the MDA is almost always WITH signal. this is good.

reg hacks
i have tried two so far from this thread, one to enable the 'E' edge icon and one to enable the visual feedback for the shift/alt key on the lower menu bar. both have worked excellently with no problems after soft reboot.

Mac OS X specific
Until the Missing Sync comes out, we are kind of screwed, but in the meantime i've been able to make things work. if you want to import contacts from Address Book, it is actually easier than you might think. simply, click on the v-card logo next to your contact and drag it into the finder so it becomes a file. do this separately for each contact you want to add to your phone (you can't do them all at once). once you have all the v-cards, make a bluetooth connection to your phone and the go to Send File . . . and select all the v-cards (here, you can do them all at once). press Send. your phone will ask you, for each contact, if you want to add it to your contacts. yes, yes, yes, yes and so on. it imports the name, all phone numbers, any category you have it in, and email addresses, but not address or IM names. anyway, it's a lot better than doing the contact by hand. also the bluetooth OS X tethering method mentioned earlier in this thread works great for me, nice edge speeds on my laptop.

3rd paty apps
i have installed today plugins (and more) spb Pocket Plus and spb Weather and am very happy with both of them. they are amazingly customizable, so be sure to explore all the settings available. they are super stable and made for WM5, and have a very slight memory footprint and don't really slow down the today menu very much. Pocket Plus can really make actually quitting apps very easy as well as seeing which are open and switching between them. I have also installed total commander and it works great for reg hacks, but it also leads me to one question . . .

my one question
has anyone been able to make the FTP in Total Commander actually work? I am able to log on and view my remote directory, but when i actually try to download a file it either stalls out or says it can't do it. All the FAQ stuff on their website does not address this problem. I'm getting a little frustrated. I'd like to be able to download html files from my website, make small changes to them, and then re upload them, all from the MDA which seems so very possible. does anyone out there use another FTP app on the MDA that works?

i'd also like to say thank you to everyone on here who has posted tip and tricks and help all of us troubleshoot our problems, it is very much appreciated, especially you alex so cal. thanks. t.o

If you're a business user you can still get the $19.99 plan - ironic since they are the ones who are least likely to need it and most likely to benefit from T-Mobile WiFi access.

Sigh.

in the root directory enter the '\\' directory and then enter the 'registry' directory.

HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER
HKLM = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

or just download PHM Registry Editor which works better for me

Check the T-Mobile website for MDA accessories. I believe they've already listed the spare battery for something like $27...

Where exactly do you enter the root directory and how do you search/edit?

I tried downloading PHM and it did not work.

I do have Total Commander but I am not familar how to use it.

I did set up the router. I guess the is on the bottom of the router, but what menu do I go to on the MDA to enter the WEP key?

there's a screen where it "sees" available networks..you highlight the add new connection and go through the whole setup w/ WEP and SSID

I use total commander. go to the registry folder and follow the directions on whatever registry entry you are editing.

how can you tell what applications are really running. for example, if you have magic button, or sbp pocket plus running, they arent in the running applications list.

here are two reg hacks from xda-developers.com that change cache sizes and claim to improve speed. anyone had any experiences with these?

"
2. Increasing font cache and screen performance:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE"
Change "limit" from "8192" (default) to "16384"
Note: "this tweak will use some more free memory"

3. Increase general performance:
1) Ga naar de volgende registry entry:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\"
Change "CacheSize" value from "0" naar "4096".

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cac heSize=0x1000(4096)"
Change "EnableCache" value to "1"

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt\"
Change "ReplStoreCacheSize" value to "4096"
"

Here are a few things to try if you're getting inconsistent RF.

1. Slide out the keyboard. I noticed that the average signal strength is about 1 bar more than when retracted into the base. This is useful if most of the time the RF is only 1 bar and risk going into search mode. Of course this won't work if you're carrying the device around; more for leaving it on a table such as at home. I don't think you have to keep the keyboard out once a call is made or received as the power output to the antenna usually increase to maintain the signal strength.

2. Soft reset the device if there's no RF when another phone grabs RF just fine. My MDA was unable to grab a signal for most of Saturday until I soft reset the device.

after reading it over and over I am confusing myself. What settings should I use if I have an employee plan?

Or do I upgrade to an internet employee package? etc.

I did enable G symbol in the registry but so far have not seen a Single pickup on on edge tower and I am in a VERY affluent area.

Great post, fantastic detail, addresses just the problem I was having (couldn't send MMS) but...

I was with you right until you said in MMS Configuration/Server pick the new connection group you just created. You must have a different ROM version or something because I don't see the new connection or connection group I created - I do however see a long list of other things not listed under the "Connections" screen. There's "My ISP name", "My ISP", "Work", Secure WAP Network", "The WAP Network" and "The Internet".

What I did find though was if I went to Settings->Connections and the Advanced tab then I could hit "Select Networks" and under "Program that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using" I could then click "New" and create a new "connection group" as you called it.

Also under the drop down there were already two additional connection group entries, one called "My ISP name" And one called "My ISP" - the former was set to include a connection "My connection" to internet2.voicestream.com, the latter a connection called "T-Mobile WModem Link" set to wap.voicestream.com

The T-Mobile WModem Link is what is used when you use the the Modem Link application and as best I can tell was incorrectly defined - if you want to use the device as a modem and hook up to the interent you'll need to change that to internet2.voicestream.com (or internet3.voicestream.com for VPN connections). This is why elsewhere I and others have found on the computer side you need to hack the modem configuration string to point it to internet2/3.voicestream.com instead of the default you get with Modem Link.

Still, all said and done, I concluded...

a) Having two connections in the T-MobileGPRS group (internet2.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com) and selecting auto pick worked fine - the phone seemed to pick the right one for MMS and Internet access.

b) Using the Advanced tab of "Connections" to add an extra connection group (say T-Mobile Messaging) containing a connection, say "T-Mobile WAP" and then selecting T-Mobile GPRS group as the default for internet connections and "T-Mobile Messaging" as the default for MMS (under MMS Config) also worked.

c) You'll almost certainly want to go into Connections->Advanced, edit the My ISP group to change the "T-Mobile WModem Link" connection to internet2.voicestream.com so you can tether your phone as a modem via USB/IrDA/BlueTooth without having to hack the modem configuration string.

d) The whole network configuration thing seems to really have been screwed up something rotten. Its been a while since I played with a real Pocket PC device, but did T-Mobile change or delete something in the Connections settings to make it so confusing or is this some standard Windows Mobile 5.0 "simplification" ???

e) Why on earth can we send MMS over internet2.voicestream.com ??? The MMS config shows its hitting a simple servlet to send the MMS so it must be some firewall rule they have that say only connections coming via wap.voicestream.com get to send MMS - so dear T-Mobile, why not just let internet2.voicestream.com get to use the same servelet??? Oy.

My only remaining problem is I can't seem to receive plain old text messages!

Yes, just about anyone who has installed Registry Wizard and activated those particular tweaks from the much bigger list of available tweaks.

Have a look at my HTC Wizard Blog. You'll find a lot of information and tweaks, and programs like this Registry Wizard, Smartskey (button remapping and integrated overclocking) and OMAP Clock , the actual tool that does the overclocking.

I may well have screwed up on that. I've been stealing time over the last 3 days to wrestle with the obscure UI of WM5, all the more confusing for me since - despite being a software person who's worked with every version of windows on a pc since day 1 - this is my first PPC, so I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of functionality in the first place.

I cannot imagine what they were thinking when the MS design team came up with this amazingly inconsistent approach to mating various user interface elements with the underlying functions of the operating system. It seems that the power of this OS is signficant -- but learning how all the settings go together, and where you configure them -- seems to have been designed by Timothy Leary on a bad day.

I'm *really* tired now -- been staying up WAY too late with this for the last 3 nights, searching HoFo and the rest of the net for answers, and just experimenting. Need sleep before the new week starts -- the 6am alarm is coming all too soon! I'll re-read your post more closely and see if I can rationalize my own instructions based on what you describe -- I suspect that we have the same ROMs and I might have missed something as I gathered my notes together. We'll figure this out tomorrow.

Bizarre about your txt messages -- but they DO work with my config....

I'll revisit this all tomorrow. Thanks for the corrections and detail... Follow up coming soon...

Ok I have 1 Question

1). When you click on the start button, you see the regular programs and then the "Recently opended" programs, HOW DO U DELETE THEM..

Posted by: ilrosewood

As for all the internet2 and wap and mms and internet and edge stuff ...

I guess I am lucky in that wap.voicestream.com has worked for me for EDGE consistantly.

My question is this -- have you tried using internet2.voicestream.com and reconfiguring your MMS settings in pocket outlook?

Ok, I followed the directions to get the Overclock to auto start after wakeup, It's not working. It keeps resetting to 180 everytime.

I created a directory and placed smartskey, smartskey.ini, and omapclock.exe in it. I changed the settings in the ini file to read: OMAPCLOCK=240. According to the directions, this is how it should work. Any ideas??? Can't figure it out. I'm going nuts trying to figure it out.

I hear you man - exactly the same here - I even have past experience with WinCE from a few years back but many of the problems just evaded me for the past 5 days. Combined with the bizzare set up of T-Mobiles data network (it really bites that MMS requires a different internet connection) it makes for a real support nightmare. I can't imagine how unhappy the PDA support people are a T-Mo right now!

I should have been plotting a graph of my satisfaction/disatisfaction with this device... I'm above neutral again now since pretty much everything I wanted is working except for HTML support in emails (doh!).

Me too - who would have thunk all this modern technology would turn us into a bunch of insomniacs! I've been up 2 and 3am most nights since I got it trying to get various things working and trying out third party apps to fill in the gaps. Work has definitely suffered while I get my head around the MDA but I think I have it down to an almost useful and maybe even beneficial device beyond being a phone.

Plus I've experienced some really cool stuff - my first experience of streaming radio the Edge connection was great. Later on I was listening to a 60kbps stereo stream driving down the freeway (only one earpiece in of course) and it was great - did drop once when I must have changed cells but it came right back. And connecting my laptop via the device has also been very good - in fact I'm browsing HoFo right now using it.

I found SMS was working after all - it seems that none of the web sites (not even T-Mobile's) I tried for sending a text to myself was working, but from another T-Mobile phone it worked fine.

Now, if only someone could summarize all the good stuff in this humoungus thread I'd be happy. The search features on this site really break down when everything is in one thread and its become quite tiresome to wade through it for info every single day.

ilrosewood: Are you subscribed to the internet plan through Tmo to get your edge? Do you, or anyone else, know if the old Tzones plan allows edge, or does T-Mobile block EDGE for older Tzones subscribers?

If i can't get edge with my current Tzones, then I can get some sleep knowing that all my proxy fiddling isn't necessary anymore.

at least for one thing i'm happy that my internet, MMS, and txt msg works amen to that. and thank you to whomever came up w/ the registery wizard save noobs like me a look of heartache

Has anyone gotten the "My E-mail" set up with silent SMS triggers from T-mobile? I tried to set it up tonight and the SMS I keep getting is "Set up unsuccessful". I am trying this with Gmail's POP access and I have the grandfathered $19.99 internet which includes this SMS trigger feature. I tried setting this up through my-tmobile.com and through the MDA itself. Still don't get the triggers notifying me of new email messages.

Anyone?

So I got off the phone with Tmo and they told me T-Zones supports EDGE, but only through WAP phones. In order to get EDGE on MDA, i'd have to get the internet plan: MDA doesn't support Tzones edge.

My question is this... I'm getting regular web pages using the T-Mobile GPRS setting with the wap.voicestream.com APN and the 216.155.165.50:8080 HTTP proxy. Do these settings allow EDGE service? If so, is T-Mobile blocking EDGE to T-Zones customers?

Looks like they're pushing everyone to upgrade to thier internet plans. So much for them appreciating me for being a customer since 2001.

How do you stop the menu animations?

and set up Pocket IE to show has a normal browser so you won't get stuck with mobile one webpages?

I know the info is out there, but search is completely useless.

Yes, that was the first thing I tried and it doesn't work for me. MMS sending hangs and eventually gives an error (I forget what) and I never receive any messages either. Ditto with PIE if I use wap.voicestream.com and try to browse the web - never connects. T-Mobile needs to find a better way to provision access to their services so only one APN is needed. Goodness knows how many dollars in support calls these issues must cost them.

Still, now it sort of works for me I'm happy - so long as I'm not connected to the internet2 APN all day I'm fine. Its not like I get or send a ton of MMS messages anyway - usually I'll send pictures as email instead of MMS unless I'm sure the person is away from a computer for a significant amount of time, or I have no idea what their email address is. Now I have all my contacts synced to the phone that is no longer a problem any more.

When I use the MDA to access internet data directly, I use wap.voicestream.com and connect to the internet thru the proxy server. I also set my email accounts to use the particular internet connection for T-Mobile rather than "The Internet" so that it goes thru their proxy server. When I am tethering the data connection to a PC, I will use an advanced modem initialization string of: at+cdgcont=1,"IP","internet3.voicestream.com" so that I can use a dedicated outside IP address for VPN use. I would also encourage MDA users to add a second connection and connect manually whenever "internet2" or "internet3" is desireable. Of course you will need the respective unlimited internet data packages from T-Mobile to access the above APN.

By making wap.voicestream.com the default connection for my MDA, I can access the MMS gateway/server without changing connections. Really, that's the only benefit to setting it up this way. Also, you will be able to view WAP pages as well--who needs that when you have full internet access on the MDA?

I've had my MDA since Wednesday, set up my may accounts I have 4 accounts setup on the T-Mobile site with silent triggers for it to fetch....it was working perfectly until this weekend...then poof, all my email accounts disappeared!!! Tried to reset them up, get an error message saying I can't add anymore accounts!! I only have my outbox, mms and text!! So I had reset the machine, started all over, they were there and about 30 minutes later they disappeared again...this is really starting to piss me off...will have to call Tech support today and see what is up...but I can tell you that it was working great till this weekend...whatever they were doing this weekend to the servers really screwed things up.

I agree I was on hold with them for so long I ended up fixing my own issue.

As for mms, what I ended up doing was changing the default internet connection to internet2.voicestream.com and then creating a new connection (Tmo MMS) and had that one direct to wap.voicestream.com. Once I entered that connection I clicked on Auto Pick as the default in connection management and everything has worked perfectly since. MMS knows which connection to use as well as my internet. For me an easy solution without a bunch of changes.

On another note the gmail solution I found does work perfectly

I have been using my MDA with the 5.99 T-Zones and the proxy settings. Everything works fine.... (only had to change email from"internet" to "connect via TMOGPRS") I do get the E Edge icon, but I can not confirm if I am really getting edge or if it is being limited. Is there a way I can test my speed on the MDA without tethering to my home computer? All in all, I'm happy.. Also, I noticed that my MMS settings are already defaulted to go through wap.voicestream.com through the same port as the proxy.. If TMO disables the proxy, what settings will MMS use?

Has anyone figured out how to turn OFF the text msg confirmation? Specifically when its on vibrate. Once a txt msg is sent, you get this ANNOYING vibrating confirmation that lets you know its been sent. I'm looking for an option to turn that off or at least cancel the vibration on the confirm. The confirmation vibrates harder than when I recieve a txt msg or a phone call and its annoying as hell.

Also, does anyone know what the blinking green and orange lights signify on the phone? I know the blinking blue means the Bluetooth is active. I'm guessing green just means the phone is on. I don't know what a blinking orange means. I know steady orange means its charging. Just curious...

test speed at dslreports.com/mspeed and use the 100k test, 600k for wifi.

It appears that my Gmail is now working correctly with the silent triggers. However I setup another email account and that one is not working (my old college email account).

MY GPRS/EDGE has stopped working now, or is so slow that the browser will somtimes time out or I get an error "Could not connect" saying it cannot dial wap.voicestream.com. This is about 70% of the time. The other 30%, it's reeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaalllly slow. It worked great with the mspeed site giving me EDGE appropriate speeds, then this started happening last night. It seems to hang on "Locating" when in PIE.

Interestingly, I set up an sbcglobal account as one email account, and use hotmail for another. I can send/retrieve from the sbcglobal, but hotmail and internet access don't work (as above).

Do I need to change my connection to one of the alternate ***.voicestream.com sites, or is it a GPRS/EDGE issue in my area (Dallas) that I should call TMobile to find out more about?

BTW, I have the $19.95 plan.

I had the $2.99 Tzones for the first day but I upgraded to $19.99 because I needed the extra port access for work. Yes, it worked fine using wap.voicestream.com and the proxy settings. Full edge speeds.

If you go to a site like ESPN.com or google.com that re-directs you to their mobile sites, that really has very little to do with PIE. The sites are setup to check the browser and if the browser is something like pie, you are auto re-directed to their "pda site."

Yes; there's a tweak that is easiest to load off the xda-developers "Registry Wizard" link that shuts off the SMS confirmation.

The green light means the phone is on. Orange means you have an unacknowledged message of some kind (e.g. missed call, text message, email, etc)

My apologies if this question has been posted before, but I have not found a satisfactory answer on HOFO or on Google.

I have been following this thread, and am not able to do some of the basic customizations that have been suggested.

I am not able to install *any* .CAB file - I connect the MDA, launch ActiveSync, go to Tools/Explore Device, copy the .CAB file to the device root directory, then launch the .CAB file (such as Magic Button) using File Explorer.

It shows a progesss bar for a few seconds, then displays a message saying "Installation of <insert-CAB-name-here> was unsuccessful".

I have tried the Magic Button CAB, as well as the Registry Tweak CABs posted on xda-developers.com - same result with both.

The device is new, I am using the default T-Mobile ROM that it came with, and I have made no other mods to the software.

Please help!
Thanks.

Thank you for the resource.

I downloaded the registry wizard and it's doing its job. what i notice though is that if i do the horizontal and vertical scroll bar tweak, it eliminates a good portion of the RF icon. if i undo it, the RF icon shows fully.

also, when i check apply reset, and then uncheck apply reset the clear type on landscape mode, it doesn't undo the cleartype in landscape mode.

is the above something that's known or unknown?

Does the clock show on your taskbar? Enable it and that should then show the rf icon with the scroll bar tweek.

In Tweaks2k2 there is a tweak named: "pass as IE 6.0" and it works...my online course first didnt allow me to login because the browser wasn't tuned up for it but then i did that tweak and it works.

I am doing mindless paperwork, so I thought "lets stay on hold with TMobile to see if their Tech Reps are as savvy as the people on HoFo"

So I just spent a half hour on the phone with Tech Support/Advanced Tech Support. After being kicked up from Tech to Advanced, I asked the tech rep if it would be a problem in terms of going outside the Internet Plan minutes by switching to the internet2.voicestream.com APN. She said no, but that since this is a problem that lots of people have been reporting, she asked that I not switch it so that they can figure out the problem with wap.voicestream.com, not work around it. On hold for a few more minutes, then the Advanced Tech support guy came on.

He said this is a problem they've been having with the wap.voicestream.com APN for a couple of days now. He then walked me thru changing the primary APN site to the internet2.voicestream.com. I then told him about the HoFo discussion about needing to set up an alternative APN using wap.voicestream.com for MMS. He said he wouldn't do so at this time, but that they would have a fix for the issue in "hopefully no more than a couple of days", but wasn't real clear on why not to set up the Auto Pick function that Shackk and others have described.

My suspicion is that they don't want too many people doing the work around and maybe complicating things further for them?

Anyway, do any of the experts on this board think it'll be a problem to do the workaround with the Auto Pick function in so far as getting charged data costs outside the Total Internet plan? Or is this just Tmobile trying to contain a complex situation by advocating people minimize their connection mods?

I was having some similar issues and here is what I did: I found the .exe file instead, launched ActiveSync, and ran the .exe on my laptop...then the phone will ask you if you want to install the .cab and just say yes and it worked for me...that might help, hope it does

That is interesting because I was given the go ahead by pda support to use this option with no push back what so ever.

The auto pick function techinally was/is not supported by Tmobile so they really cannot discuss it, however the rep I had heard my explaination and said yes that is a confirmed work around but they cannot release it. Whatever that means.

Anyway is it a problem using the work around? No. Would I change it back in the future? Yes if it was confirmed to work. Would I pay for something I cant use? Hell no, and that is why I wanted a work around that does work and so far the auto pick option works flawlessly for me.

Hope that helps

I tried your suggestion with Magic Button - I installed the .exe file on my PC - ActiveSync did it's thing - popped up a window saying "check your Mobile device for any additional steps as required".

On the MDA - the same old thing happened - "installation of <magic .CAB file> was unsuccessful.

Thanks for the tip though - I can check off another possibility on my list. I called PDA support @ T-Mobile, and they had no idea why this would happen - all they said was that the device is not prevented from installing 3rd party software in any way.

Is it possible that these devices come software locked? If so you may need to find a .cab that unlocks the software restriction on your device and then install the programs you want.

Im not sure if that is the case but I know I did have one device where I had to do this.

Nah. I got the MDA last Tuesday from a TMO store and had Magic Button on it within an hour. No problems installing.

Do you have enough memory to insall this? Check, otherwise something is up with the phone...I just had so much stuff that I ran out of memory and couldn't install anymore stuff, so I did a hard reset and reinstalled only a few apps.

I checked - yes I do.
*But*, then I noticed your comment about a hard reset - I did a hard reset - and now I can install .CABs !

So went ahead and installed Magic Button and the Registry Tweak, and - it's all good!

I dont know what the problem was before - maybe WM5 acting up ?

Just have to re-enter all my email acct settings though...

Thanks to everyone!

Does anyone know if there is a program/tweak that will let you increase the number of days that an entry in the calander will be displayed on the today screen? For example, my next appointment is in a week (7 days) but on the today screen it just has "no upcoming appointments". Also, how about the Tasks? Is there a program that will actually display the tasks instead of just "3 active tasks"?
For Windows Smartphones there is a program by SBSH called Facade that was actually a homescreen plug-in that allowed for this. Without opening my calander I could see all my upcoming appointments for the next 14 days (or whatever you set it to). And the tasks were also listed on the homescreen and could even "check" them right from the homescreen without ever opening the tasks program.

And the tasks were also listed on the homescreen and could even "check" them right from the homescreen without ever opening the tasks program.

Here is a link with exactly what I was refering to:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=237247
That is the program Facade for Smartphones. We need one for PPCs. Any ideas anyone?

I used ORB successfully over my home Wi-Fi connection (amazing). No settings change was required for that, but at least I saw how it could work over Wi-Fi before I tried playing with EDGE. As has been documented in other posts regarding ORB, I noticed that WM Player was opening a URL on port 80, so this will require some reconfiguring for those who have their port 80 blocked by a broadband provider for the EDGE connection.

I just recieved my MDA today , but when i tried to sync it to my computer, it will not sync. How can i get my ActiveSync working?? Also, Is there a way to choose how to connect when using EI. When i connect, it tries to use GPRS, but i want it to use the WiFi instead. It worked when i turned the phone's radio off, but when the radio is on, it won't connect. Two more questions, are we able to send files over bluetooth on the MDA?? Where do files go that were sent to your phone over bluetooth?? Thanks a lot.

Isnt this the program for ppc's here?

Just looks like they do not have a supported wm5 version yet.

ahh, thanks! I searched the site and must've missed it. I'll try the trial version out later and see how it runs on WM5.

Has anyone had luck synching with GroupWise? If so, are you using just normal IMAP settings and ping the server every so often?

Thanks in advance

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL

You should have a key in there title "EnableDifferGprsEdge"

Change the DWORD from 0 to 1, then soft reset.

Why will it not save the settings for me? After I soft reset my MDA it changes back to 0.

Try using Resco Registry, I can take screenshots of how to do it with that if you want.

here it is: searching these forums is almost impossible w/o spending A LOT of time:

1. Make sure that when you’re setting up your mobile phone’s Bluetooth capabilities within Mac OS X you check “Access the Internet with your phone’s data connection.” If your phone is already paired and you initially forgot to select this option you can find it at System Preferences | Bluetooth | Devices [choose your device] | Configure.
2. Download Ross Barkman’s IPAQ PDAs modem script.
3. Unpack the archive and place the IPAQ GSM script into /Library/Modem Scripts/
4. Go to System Preferences | Network | Show: [Bluetooth]
5. Click on PPP Options and make sure that “Use TCP header compression” is unchecked. Click OK.
6. Click on Bluetooth Modem and choose the IPAQ GSM script from the drop-down list.
7. Disable both “Enable error correction and compression in modem” and “Wait for dial tone before dialing.”
8. Click on PPP. T-Mobile users aren’t required to put in a specific username or password, but apparently it breaks if you don’t put something in both fields. If you’re a Cingular subscriber you’ll want to use the following information:?Account Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM?Password: CINGULAR1
9. Enter *99# as the phone number.
10. Click Dial Now and then click Connect.
As always, you can monitor the connection (or failed attempt) through /var/log/ppp.log

The reason you're not seeing the changes saved has to do with the way WM5 buffers data writes (i.e., there's a delay before changes to the registry are written to permanent storage).

When you do a soft reset by using the stylus to press the reset button on the side of the MDA, if you just made the registry change immediately before resetting, there's a good chance that the change simply wasn't written to non-volatile storage before WM5 shut down -- so the change was lost.

This is why people recommend using "technique 2" to soft reset after making a registry change. First - make sure you "OK" out of the registry editor you're using. Then you press and hold the power button on the top right of the MDA. It will warn you that you will "lose data", but in fact it writes the registry changes before shutting down. When you restart (by pressing "power" again), your updates will be there.

Now that's what I want to see.
But unfortunately, I see the files on Orb, but when Windows Media tries to open them it says"Cannot play the file. The file is either corrupted or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play" I have tried several files. All of the files Media player on my desktop could open so I don't know what the problem is.
Any help would be appreciatted.

I use agile and no one's complained to me yet...although i am noticing that this program is locking up a lot more frequently than it did on my KJAM i dont know why...very annoying though.

On a side note...i got my t-mobile corporate email acct to work!!! w00t w00t thanks to anthony for setting me up w/ that...the only thing that i noticed it didnt do was send my email reply immediately like i had it do...*scracthes head*

It has happened to me as well but not often.

Well, the CPU for this thing was never designed to play video. Thus, using TCPMP works but ... well not really. So very very choppy compared to the xscale based devices. Im happy with my MDA but there better not be an xscale version within 18mo.

important... for those of you not able to connect to your routers at home, i've found a fix. no need to do n word.... 1st upgrade your router firmware!!!! this should fix it alone, but if it doesn't do that G registry edit and it will work... worked for me.

also... for those of you having trouble connecting to active sync, i had the same problem, and i figured out it was firewall... turn off any firewall program you have and it will work!

well my my corporate sms email trigger is hit or miss...i dont seem to be getting any emails via the "PULL" method so ill have to play around with it some more...i cant wait for the rom upgrade for true PUSH

Ok,

I've had my MDA for nearly a week now...
Got Magic Button and TotalCommander loaded on it.
Downloaded RegistryWizard... for those that can't figure out manual registry tweaks I recommend you getting it, its got the essential tweaks most people need, and the developer keeps updating with new tweaks RegistryWizard
You have to register to view the download files on the first page of that thread.
WARNING: Download version G or H, version I is causing issues and is being worked on.

Another cool install is Smartkeys
This allows you to pull up the Start Menu by holding the left softkey button, and close programs by holding the right one. Normal softkey functionality remains the same with a simple tap without holding.
And probably the coolest thing with Smartkeys is the scrolling feature it gives u using the volume control. On all programs but the Phone program, the volume slider on the side lets u scroll up or down a page, so no longer needing the stylus.

I've got everything working on this device perfectly except friggin WIFI!!!!!

I can't figure this out for the life of me. I've set my router to Open, no encryption. The MDA says its availlable, and i do connect to it. IT SAYS CONNECTED, but i can't load a single page. And yes i have the G hack engabled.

Can someone who can connect to an Open router tell me EXACTLY how they have they're WLan setting setup.
When i mean exactly, what is shown on the screen when you go
START > SETTINGS> Connections Tab> Network Cards
...
What does it say for "My Network Card Connects to:"?
I have two options in the drop down, The Internet, or Work

And what Adapter is highlighted for said setting?

Also under GPRS Settings: What do ppl have, CHAP or PAP?

While I'm at it, any one kno what the Reg Hack is to stop that annoying onscreen keyboard from popping up everytime you change tab?

For some reason, on my Sony Vaio laptop with an onboard B/G Internal Wireless Card, I can't seem to have Wi-Fi active on the laptop while the Active Sync connection is active. Active Sync adds another network connection which for some reason stops my laptop's wireless card from connecting to the router. The only way for me to fix it is to unplug the MDA from the USB connection, power the router off and back on, and repair the wireless connection. Anyone having similar issues with AS 4.1!? Any ideas?

Quick question, why is having G so important? I thought the mda's slow processor couldn't handle that traffic anyways? I'm still going to enable G on my MDA, but just wondering if it's true about the processor not being any good with G speeds. Maybe it's because some routers are G only?

Two questions:

1. When I sync my phone do the voice tags get saved anywhere? As best I can tell the answer is no, but I'm not going to hard reset just to find out...

2. I have the $29.99 unlimited data plan, but what exactly does internet3.voicestream.com give me over internet2.voicestream.com - I know the former is for VPN connections but I use OpenSSL VPN over internet2 and it works just great. Does internet2 block some ports or protocols that I should know about???

3. The "My E-Mail" is an extra feature I have to pay more for right? I've configured email accounts on My T-Mo before which I used with my Moto V300 (but a long time ago). I tried using My E-Mail but it just hangs trying to retrieve account settings

The entries for overclocking are commented out by default in the.ini file. Did you remove the ";" at the start of the line (without the quotes)? If you didn't, it will not work.

You can apply the registry tweak on this page. That same tweak is included in Registry Wizard.

It sounds like you are using the wrong method to perform a soft reset, causing your device to reset before the registry changes have been written back to your device. Have a look at this article on my HTC Wizard Blog.

Maybe this works for some but not all. I have a Linksys and having the most up-to-date firmware did not fix the problem.

I think the registry tweak is the key.

I have to agree --- my router (Belkin F5D8230-4 "Pre-N") had the latest firmware, and it was set to allow both 802.11b and 802.11g connections. NOTHING I did would let the MDA connect over WiFi, although it connected just fine to public hotspots -- UNTIL I did the registry tweak in the MDA to allow "g" connections and then did a soft reset. Ever since then it's been perfect.

how do you keep GPRS on all the time? is it more of a drain on the battery than just off/on GPRS?

the reason i ask is, i've got my corp email (Exchange 2003) set to receive as they arrive during my off peak hours. i got some e-mails overnight during off peak cuz i checked my inbox via my laptop, but i look at my phone and activesync did not sync as the items were received overnight.

so i manually synced and it worked, but during off peak hours, it should've received the emails without me having to resync it.

am i correct thinking that if i kept GPRS on all the time it wouldn't do this or is the exchange server responsible for this more so than anything else? activesync should've synced when the emails were sent during off peak as they arrived.

I have the same VPN issue as well. I tried several things - then I called T-Mobile PDA support, and they said that my account needs to be switched to T-Mobile Total Internet VPN - apparently some ports need to be opened and the APN is now internet3.voicestream.com. There is no additional cost.

However, I am still not able to connect to my corporate VPN. I setup the VPN server information, defined a modem connection with internet3 as the APN, left the username/password boxes blank, left the defaults for IP addresses/DNS etc.

Then I setup my email account (not in My Email, but in Pocket Outlook), but it doesnt work.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Thanks.

Now that most folks have had the device for around a week, any comments on 1GB versus 2GB MiniSD cards. I trolled the Cingular sites and sounds like folks are having mixed results with the 2GB cards. What has been the experience so far amongst MDA users. Trying to decide 1 vs 2, and the 1GB is just so compelling from a price point that if it is stable and the 2 is buggy, then I'll take the 1GB.

OTOH, I don't want to be b******* in 6mos that I need more space, and people always say buy as much memory as you can afford -- but if its buggy.....

I'll be getting a 2GB card sometime, or possibly a 4GB card when they're available and reasonably priced -- assuming the MDA can handle it. For now, I decided to start with a 1GB card.

I know the prices are best online, but I was at Best Buy the other day, and they had just received a new shipment of 1GB cards, and had sold all but one. They had also dropped their pricing on it from $79 to $63. Probably about $10 more than it would have cost to buy it online (with shipping figure in), but I got immediate gratification by getting it in person, so it was easy to rationalize the extra expense.

Just played with moving some files back and forth so far. Haven't decided yet how I want to organize it.

One thing was curious about was how much difference the memory speed makes. Most of the standard cards out there have similar access speeds, and for a premium you can get them about 20% faster...and for a far more signficant premium, you can get them about twice as fast as the average miniSD. Aside from the speed in copying files back and forth, does anyone know if the access speed will have a noticeable impact on applications that use the miniSD?

OK... i've given up on EDGE with my $4.99 T-zones account. The next problem is my WiFi connection.

I have no problem connecting to access points using WEP or WPA encryption. The college where I work has a WiFi network. There is no encryption on the access points.

What happens is when you start up a web browser (on a laptop or Palm Pilot) it redirects you to a login page where you input your account id and password, then it lets you browse freely. Windows Mobile doesn't like that type of authentication method, it seems.

I have no problem connecting to the access point with my MDA. I get an assigned IP address but it doesn't connect to the login page.

Anyone out there run into something similar? Any ideas?.. I'm gonna jump over to the windows mobile forum and start digging there.

You will need a registry editor like Total Commander.....

Enable g wi-fi:
1) Locate the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS

2) Add a DWord value to it:

name: dot11SupportedRateMaskG
value: 8

No you are not getting edge speed which I belive is 50k and higher. I also have it set on internet2 and always pick up 110k+ Maybe try internet3@voicestream.com? I know Tmo has been having many issues.

In theory, the icon hack should change from E to G depending on if you have EDGE coverage but many, like myself, cant verify that since I am in an EDGE area. But in theory it should flip.

When using a coworker's Palm, it sees the network. The built in web browser redirects to the authentication page where I can sign into the network. It's all web-based.

I tried navigating to the authentication page, which resides on an access point in our building. That access point authenticates using Bluesocket with the univeristy's network. That's all I've learned.

The biggest thing is that it's web-based. PIE should be redirecting me to the authentication page. I've tried minimo and opera with no results.

I'm at a loss...

Also, off current topic regarding EDGE. I tried my gprs connection on dslreports/mspeed, and these are my results:
50k file: 69kbit/s
100k file: 128kbit/s
Are these considered EDGE?

Yes those are Edge speeds

Can someone who can connect to an Open router tell me EXACTLY how they have they're WLan setting setup.
When i mean exactly, what is shown on the screen when you go
START > SETTINGS> Connections Tab> Network Cards

What does it say for "My Network Card Connects to:"?
I have two options in the drop down, The Internet, or Work

And what Adapter is highlighted for said setting?

Also under GPRS Settings: What do ppl have, CHAP or PAP?

While I'm at it, any one kno what the Reg Hack is to stop that annoying onscreen keyboard from popping up everytime you change tab?

Wow. It seriously took me 3 days to go through this thread and read every single post.

lmao

So my questions(s):

1. Has anyone had any issues with syncing via IrDA? I have an infrared port on my laptop and it appears to be active and all that. If I uninstall the driver - reboot - it even finds it again and isntalls it again. However, when I try and beam a pic or sync to it - the laptop does not pick up any type of signal at all. I tried it on a coworkers laptop and it works fine - so it's something on my laptop. Windows XP pro - checked control panel - wireless link - and it appars to be turned on in there - show icon in taskbar when something within range, etc. It's enabled in the bios. Any other ideas?

2. Word of advice - don't buy the Fellowes screen protectors for PDAs, Ipod's, etc and slap one on the MDA. They aren't designed to be rubbed up against ones face and the oil from the face doesn't appear to easily want to be removed from the protector even after wiping it clean. Ugh.

I'll post more lata...

1. You might want to try using the IR link between your laptop and your co-worker's laptop, just to see if you can get any IR device to work with your computer.

2. I'm still looking into the prospect of screen protectors, but what is the best substance to use on the screen to clean the oils off an unprotected screen?

To repeat my question from a previous page as well, is there a way to have the MDA sync its clock with the GSM network time like about every other GSM device I have ever used?

The two screen protectors that appear most promising to me so far are the Martin Fields and the "invisibleShield"

I'm really intrigued about the invisbleShield -- it seems to be made of some kind of incredibly tough and scratch proof material -- you have to check their website and see the demo videos. If it's really possible to get this stuff onto the MDA without any damage, and if the screen sensitivity is still good, then I'm interested. It's apparently a bit of a job getting it installed, but once it's there, it's supposed to be great.

I don't know how it compares to the Martin Fields protector, which also has a good rep, but my impression is that the invisibleShield is really an intense product.

Also: if you notice, the one they're selling for the MDA is listed as a "full body shield". It seems that they actually do full body wraps for some devices as well as just covering the screen. I don't know how that would work on the textured surfaces of the MDA, but I think it's worth checking out.

If anyone tries either product, please post results here!

Guys, I have been using PDAs for 10 years now. By far, the best screen protectors are the ones made by PPC Techs. Not even close. Check them out at www.ppctechs.com

The AG are my personal favorite. When you write on the screen, it feels like a really nice pen writing on high quality paper.

I can attest to this...I just got mine last night...best ever

I have an invisible shield coming for the MDA. Will post when its here and I've had time to play with it.

I'm not impressed with the PPCTechs one. It does NOT have the little notch they promised to make removal reasonable, AND I don't like the idea of their "adhesive stuff" on the back side of the protector. If that stuff decides to set up on you, you're screwed and will NEVER get that thing off without destroying the screen. It also is EXTREMELY difficult to get placed without bubbles - and since it has that "adhesive stuff" on the down-facing side, you can't work bubbles out easily either.

Not to mention that they're RADICALLY overpriced.

I'm not sure you got PPC screen protectors. Their screen protectors don't have any stickness to them. An definitely do not have bubbles. I have been using these for like 3 years now. Very easy to remove, clean and put them back. Did you get the AG model? I have no relationship with those guys, so that's not why i'm pushing their stuff. I have never heard anyone complain about them. They are pricey because you never need to buy anymore for the life your PDA. They last a very long time.

Sounds great, and the Martin Fields overlays sound good too...but I'm really intrigued by the other ones. they have a lifetime replacement guarantee. I'm reading it now (on another window) -- and it seems that if your overlay ever gets scratched while installed on your device, they'll send you a new one free. You send back the old one after you get the new one, and they'll "mark" your account so you continue to qualify for lifetime coverage and more replacements if you ever need them.

The writeup describes the material as having been originally developed to protect helicopter rotors, and the demo videos are pretty amazing. I'm also really intrigued by the idea of a "full body shield" if they really have a way of getting this material totally down and snug on the MDA -- that would really be fantastic. Now -- all I need is to find somebody else who's already been the guinea pig...

Is yours supposed to be the "full body shield"? I'm really curious to see how well that works, and how much of the body it covers (and how tough it is to install really cleanly).

Anyone know of a headphone adapter I can use? Sure would like to listen/watch movies with my Shure's.

Posted by: MinisterStanley

On my last PPC, it was possible for me to stream audio from my home computer and listen to it on my PPC. I installed Windows Media Encoder, and can begin the encoding process, but when I put in the URL in Windows Media Player I get the message "parameters not correct". Am I doing something wrong, or is WM5 not designed to do this?

Yep - the C2 model, they claim specifically for this model, and it fits exactly.

The side that goes on the screen is definitely sticky. IMHO a total waste of $30; the only thing worthwhile in the kit was the microfiber cloth.

I haven't had Edge in my house at all since I got this (and did the Edge "E" display hack). Always get plain ol' GPRS speeds at home -- I was starting to wonder if I did the hack right, but then when I drove by BestBuy yesterday (a few miles away), I noticed the "E" replacing the "G". What was weird, though, was that despite a strong (multi-bar) signal, "E" dropped periodically, and my download speeds dropped to about 33k again. I'm wondering if this is at all related to the network issues that T-Mobile mentioned having over the last few days.

Posted by: foofighter

woohooo...got my corporate email working now...apparently i didn't check the box in active sync to use the "scheduling" even if i'm roaming so it wasnt checking automatically unless i forced it to sync

also, i d/l regedit and did the GPRS always on this is such a badass device

Posted by: ZackM0rrisPh0ne

ok, i retract my previous statement...edge is working great on my device. i guess the inside of my office didn't get the best reception. here at home, i did a speed test and got 194kb/s! wish i got that when i'm out and about. no use really when i have wifi at home

AutoGordianKnot (freeware)

Pocket DIVX Encoder (Freeware)

Fair Use Wizard

Windows Movie Maker (comes with Windows, can make small .wmv videos)

A good place to learn about this, is on the forums at www.doom9.org

I have heard that the adapter for the Moto Rokr will work. This was from a HTC Wizard specific board. I haven't had a chance to get to a Cingular store to try one out yet.

Has anyone figured out how to use custom wavs or mp3s for sound notifications such as txt received? I tried placing them in /windows and /windows/rings but neither worked. I don't have a minisd yet so I can't try the root folder on the card yet. There has to be somewhere that you can put it on the phone I just can't find it. Any ideas?

Some noob questions:

1. Does the Registry Wizard encompass ALL the hacks that have been discussed over the last 75+ pages of posts, i.e. one stop shopping?

2. In order to do the Registry Wizard, or other hacks, do I need to unlock both the phone and the CID, or just the CID. Or am I confusing the issue, and is there just one unlock to do -- are they the same thing?

3. Won't the full body suit invisi-shield thing that everyone has been discussing install kind of funny over the sliding mechanism. Really curious to see how it installs in what would need to be two parts and preserves the integrity of the sliding mechanism.

One other thing -- got the Martin Fields protector, and it really is impressive. I wondered what all the hype was about, but this thing is pretty sweet. You don't know it's there, it's durable, and very easy to clean.

1. Most of them

2. You do not need to unlock anything, just install and run the program. Check off the hacks you desire

3. Not sure, I really dont care for it anyway.

for some odd and most strange reason that same thing happened to me but I loaded 5 and only 3 worked, I used one of them for incoming mail and it worked. Well I just got my MDA yesturday and I had a few questions... I searched but couldn't find them and didn't feel like reading 80 pages on the thread...
1) When my phone was charging last night the screen was on, I looked in the settings and couldn't find anything to turn it off when it charges, can I?
2) What is the best way to download and install games or programs on the MDA?
3) I see there are quite a few DVD programs for the MDA, which one it the best? I used to use Smart Movie on the 6620 but it doesn't support WM5?
4) I copied all my contact from my SIM to the phone... When I go to contacts it shows both where I just want it to show the contacts on the phone. I go to Menu > Filter > No Categories and that seems to work, but every time I exit it goes back to All Contacts. Is there a way that I can just have it show my contacts on the phone and not have to change it every time?

1. Start >> Settings>> System Tab >> Backlight>> External Power Tab >> Check "Turn off backlight if device is not used for" and change it to whatever you want.

2. Sorry I don't know but I found some games and installed them via activesync,

3. Not sure either but if I try any I'll inform.

4. Sorry I don't know.

Hopefully the ones answered helps

For installing games/programs, .exe files can just be double clicked and will automatically install to your device via active sync just follow the on screen directions. For .cab files just download either to your comp and place in the /temp folder of your device or download straight to your device from the site and save in the /temp folder. Once in the /temp folder use file explorer on your device and navigate to it and click on the .cab file and it will self install.

Doesn't have to be in the temp folder. You can place it anywhere because once you run the cab, it removes itself automatically.

As for hiding SIM Contacts, the Registry Wizard found here includes that tweak: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725

The BT hack that I did was after installng MS Voice Command to replace the default voice dialer. The default application requires you to store voice tags that you record for each person you'll want to be able to dial by name.

MS Voice Command (a fairly cheap download from MS) gives you "speaker independent voice dialing" and "speaker independent digit dialing" -- no training needed, and it will match your voice command to ALL of the names in your phone book. Huge improvement in functionality over the built-in app.

BUT... when you install MS Voice Command, you can invoke it manaully on the phone, but the phone still calls up the built-in voice app instead when you hit the connect button on your BT headset.

The "hack" is to change the application that WM5 invokes when you hit the connect button on the headset. Once you're done that, you tap the button on the headset, you hear a beep, and you're connected with Voice Command.

Ah, I understand. Sorry for the misinformed post.

FYI, I found the answer to the GPRS always on at the HTC Wizard blog site. Great site I must say. Downloaded Total Commander and went at it, but had to guess at some of the file path names since they were different than what i read on the site's instructions.

Not sure if this question has been answered (am six pages behind) but if you will look in Active Sync and make sure that allow connections is checked and the Com Port that your blue tooth device is using is selected this may fix your problem.
