SSH

I didn't know if i passed a good SSH program for WM5. Also in all honesty, is the 802.11 and WM5 the only thing this device has over a Treo 650? Could I do EDGE with a 650 and use tmobile hot spots if i had a wifi card for a 650?

I like the device, but it just seems very buggy over all.

Have you had a Treo 650? If not then you may be in for surprise. Both need some tweaking in order to work well imho.

I notice that after setting GPRS always on, when i turn on my phone to use it after it's been sitting there for a bit (dimmed), the os would hang for about 10 seconds before reacting to any of my inputs. it doesn't do it all the time, but it happens more often than not.

i set it back to GPRS not always on or a null value in the registry and i haven't had the issue since.

weird huh?

I'm not aware of a ssh program - could use one myself....

I'm actually using the same one! I'll PM to discuss.

I haven't come across any working ssh clients yet. There's a VNC clone I wanted to check out -- commerical products ($22) claims to be 100% compatible with Real VNC, etc.

Need to research this a bit more...

Posted by: metalzo

Has anyone tried uninstalling the included OZ IM client on the MDA? I'm thinking about doing it since it's pretty useless and uninstalling it will free up some memory (and maybe even speed up the device who knows). Plus if I ever need it back for some reason I can always hard reset.

This VNC is linked from the MDA Faq...might wanna try it out: http://dotnetvnc.sourceforge.net/

i've never had one before, but I know they're more mac friendly since its not windows, and i know there's a ******** of apps available for it also.

Just curious, i've got until tuesday to take the phone back if i don't like it for any reason. i'm still on the fence about it.

A bit of a concern that development seems to have stopped almost a year ago, and it wasn't 100% back then, and never claimed support for WM5.

Seems like others have taken a crack at this too, although maybe not as open source. Here's one:
http://www.parystec.demon.co.uk/pt_vnc_hires.htm

...and here's a VNC Server that runs on WM5 -- so you can use a remote pc to control your MDA: http://www.pocketvnc.com/pocketVNC.aspx -- not sure if this includes a VNC client that can also run on WM5.

Need to keep searching for alternatives to evaluate...

Yep. You can remove it without problems.

The one "gotcha" with the Agile client is that the quick shortcut to get back to the top screen (double click the "END" button) disconnects any in-progress EDGE session. That sucks bananas, and is true on the SDA as well.

Note that it will nail your session even if you have locked the device!

I know of no way around this one.

What is the best BT headset for now to use with MDA?

Posted by: shackk

Just an FYI, I changed my connection settings from internet2 to wap.voicestream.com today just to see if it works and it does.

It looks like Tmo fixed the mess that happened over the weekend.

Did a speed test and got 135k which ironically is the fastest I have gotten in my house since getting the mda (so far ). But I just loaded the new Qtek test rom and the lastest radio update so that could have a lot to do with it as well. The new (test) rom works flawlessly so far and overall speed on the device is much improved, again so far.

Definitely drains your battery faster with the wifi radio on -- and it also drains faster with bluetooth on as well. I generally leave wifi off, turning it on only when I'm planning on web access -- which I don't use when I'm walking around or driving. If I'm going to be indoors for a few hours (e.g., office, a client location or home), I turn off bluetooth. Battery lasts much longer this way, and it becomes second nature.

Anyone who uses Spb Weather -- is there anyway to configure the program to update from the MDA, e.g. access the web via the MDA, to update weather, if I don't sync everyday? It looks like there is space to enter a proxy and password, but I'm not sure what do from there.

Posted by: djayrage

Okay I figured out how to create a custom notification/ringer.
1: go to http://public.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php
And type in what you'd like for the notification or ring to say and then download it after picking a voice. (keep in mind sometimes you have to purposely misspell certain word to get them to be pronounced correctly. For example for DJ I had to spell it as d j).
2: rename that file you downloaded into something you'd like.
3: move that .wav file to your devices /windows directory.
4: go to start - settings - sounds & notifications - notifications (select the event you'd like to change the ring for and select the respectable audio file).

This will get burried and will probably end up in a new thread but...

We all know the MDA is kind of memory limited. No biggie. We can put in a mini sd card and be on our way. Besides, the more memory that is installed, it becomes more expensive and has less battery life. BUT, we still want to maximize this storage space.

So, we all know to clear the temp files in IE and close programs when we aren't using them anymore. However, browsing around in file explorer, I noticed there are a lot of random files like "b183f2a7-06c3-4f27-9679-7baf97e94efa.rgu" in my windows directory and files like "mxip_notify.vol" in my root directory. Does anyone know wtf these are and if I can delete them? Ive lost well over 8 megs to this stuff.

-_EDIT_-

Well, the .rgu files are registry entries and the .vol are system settings too. Crazy way to store **** like that, especially since custom notifications also have to just sit in the windows folder.

Also
Do not use pocketzenphone beta with the mda! That seemed to be the reason behind my sudden connection loss.

help please, someone. i'm having a problem with my email. it was working fine, but the last couple of days i noticed that i cannot send email. it receives fine, but when i send, i get an email in my inbox saying it wasn't sent, the email addresses were invalid (which they aren't). i deleted the email accounts and tried to setup again through "my email", "add a new my email account", but then i get "we apologize for the inconvenience. Please verify your subscription information and try again" after it tries to connect to get email settings. this doesn't make sense to me, i've never had a problem setting up the email. it has worked before. i have the vpn internet for 19.99. do i have to also have the t-zones for this to work?

i guess i could call cs, but it's 1am and i'm not in the mood. thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Sounds like it may be even sloppier than Windows on the pc. I wonder if the "rgu" files need to still exist ... or if they're left behind after the registry has been updated ... or if they were left there to provide the option to UNDO registry changes.

I'll bet there are a lot of files sitting around that really don't need to be on the device throughout the day. I would much rather have a copy of all the extra files on my pc -- ready to transfer back to the MDA if necessary -- but not taking up space on the MDA during normal operation.

Why doesn't anything google work on my MDA?

If I web surf to google.com I get redirected to google.com/pda and nothing works.

If I browse to m.gmail.com it doesn't connect.

I set up gmail using both my tmo email and directly as a pop account and even setting the dl to 999k trick, either way the inbox keeps emptying itself.

As an aside I have unl internet with corp emal, use the connector with outlook because my exch svr isn't exposed outside our firewall, and it empties the inbox all the time too. when ak2u comes out will exch need to be exposed for push to work?

Yes, from the home screen click and hold the plug in and choose options, click on the sync tab, change your option to auto update and then choose the option you like to have.

If you need to enter a proxy you can do so on this screen as well.

I am hoping that someone can help me with this, I received my MDA this past Monday and I have installed the following apps so far:
Registery Wizard (enable G&E, 802.11G, etc..)
Total Commander
MS Voice Command (with reg. edit for bluetooth headset)
SPB Pocket Plus
SPB Pocket Weather
Smartskey (for soft key setting)
MIdlet (HQ) from IBM for Google glm (does not work)

I have been reading this forum for a while in anticipation of getting my MDA, so i hope i am not repeating questions. The device is great, i love all the features in it, but I am have having the following problems:
-Battery life will not last more than 7-9 hours with very little usage, bluetooth and WiFi off (in the past 1.5 hours the battery drained to 81%).
-Cannot get google glm to work throught the IBM MIdlet download (i followed the instructions on the MDA FAQ sticky).
-When i open MSN messenger it created a hotmail account in pocket outlook that I cannot seem to be able to delete, any idea how to delete it, i don't use hotmail, but do use messenger.

Really the main issue is the the poor battery life. I did drain the battery completely and recharged, but it still is very poor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you.

What are your backlight and power settings on battery? I changed mine to 30sec on the backlight and 1 minute turn off on battery power and noticed a good difference.

Also whenever I sit my phone down I always press the power button so everything goes off as well. I usually can get about two days worth (although i charge each night) and that includes some messing around on wifi. but not a lot.

Posted by: azaouk

I have the brightness set to the 1st dash, backlight at 30 sec. and 2 minute turn off.

When you press the power button it just suspends it correct? so can you still received calls when in suspend mode.

Thanks

Correct, I receive calls and all messages. It also still auto checks email and my specified interval as well.

Posted by: azaouk

ok, great i will try that to, but i would expect to be able to get more than 7-9 hours of use. I took the phone off charge around 9 AM yesterday and the battery died at 4 PM. I made 3 phone calls for no more than 2-3 minutes a call using my Plantronic 640 Bluetooth headset, so I am not sure if there is anything else that is draining the battery.

I think the website is HOT. Not as hot as my MDA battery, gosh. But I digress.
How do I drop the .wav file into the windows directory? I seem to be missing something.

not sure if you can do it with the built in file explorer app, but I use Resco Explorer, find the file I want to move, highlight it with the stylus until the option window pops up, and then select move to...

I've found that the battery life in my MDA seems to have improved over the last week. I suspect it may be related to "conditioning" the battery. In the first few days, I also saw the charge dropping quickly, getting down into the 70% range in just a couple of hours, even with WiFi and BT off. But in the last several days, I'm seeing excellent battery life. After having the phone on for about 10 hours, and only using it as a phone for perhaps 4 or 5 calls for a total of an hour, the battery was still in the very high 80's. I'm getting the impression lately that if I used it just as a phone, it would last for several days between charges.

O.k... There have been far dumber questions than this! I previously posted that on my MDA my Activesync will automatically open the program after approx. 5 minutes. I have installed Magic Button and shut it off. No one seems to know why this is happening. I spent 2 hours with HTC techs last night, have performed numerous hard resets on the device, uninstalled and reinstalled on my laptop (sony vaio) and it still pops up on it's own and wastes my battery! I am not connected to an exchange server and here are my settings for ActiveSync on my device:

Options: Windows PC - have contacts, calendar, email, tasks, favorites, and files checked.
Settings under Windows PC: "if there is a conflict: Replace the item on my device"
Schedule is not highlighted
Status: Tells me when my last usb sync was and the last attempt matches.
Add Server Source: Nothing in the Server Address but the box is checked "this server requires an encrypted SSL connection. (Can't uncheck that)
Connections: Box checked "synchronize all PCs using this connection:" 'USB (nothing more in drop down)

It seems to reload after I perform a soft reset on my device and then can't shut it off. Perhaps this is suppose to happen until I can use my USB (which is at home) and then close the program that way?

The bottom line is I just need to know if this is suppose to happen this way? I have read every post in here, have spoken with seemingly intelligent techs, and no one knows. Tmobile said it is a software glitch and I should return it. Surely you guys are smarter than anyone I spoken with and will help me out. Much appreciated.

Seems like persistence paid off with T-mobile CS. I was trying to get the old $19.99 Total Internet Plan and after numerous different reps, lots of hold time, and about an hour and a half of total time on the phone, I was transferred to a rep (I believe in the retentions department) who was able to add it for me.

This after being told that it doesn't exist, it hasn't existed since August 2004, among many other things! Just be polite but persistent, and after a while they seem to give in to keep you as a customer. By the way I'm sure it also helped that I've been with them since 2003 and I am currently out of contract and was threatening to switch :P

I think conditioning the battery helps. The first time I charged the phone, I charged it for 12 hrs straight. I didn't get my boxwave screen protector, so the phone sat for 1 week. I then popped in my sim, and booted it up for the first time. Battery was at 90%. Played around with the phone a lot the first night I got it, and by morning when I was leaving for work, the phone was at 25% ! But get this, it lasted a whole 10hrs while I was at work. It was at 5% when I noticed that it wouldn't allow me to use the camera functions, but would still allow me to open up media player and play mp3s. It seemed to have lasted about 3 hours at 4% and I even received a phone call during that low battery usage. Currently charging my phone for the 2nd time right now.

phone is now charged. went from completely drained at 9:30am and by noon the blinking orange light is now stable green. will keep it charged for a couple of more hours just in case. 2.5hrs charge time.

Posted by: azaouk

Great that makes me feel better, thank you all for your input. I will continue to condition my battery and see what happens.

I have another quick question to. I installed Magic Button before i got Pocket Plus. Once i install pocket plus i unistalled magic button, but it is still there under programs and i can run it although it does not exist under add/remove programs on the MDA and activesync. Anyone has had that problem? I would like to completely unistall it.

Also did the filter option for contacts in activesync 4.1 not there anymore, I usually have my mobile numbers in its own category so that i can syn it with my MDA, but it seems that that option is not there anymore.

mystic11 I am having the same issue with activsync. Everytime i check on running programs activsync is there, i would be curious to hear if anybody else has that problem, or if there is a solution.

If your gprs is set to wap.voicestream.com then yes it will work, if not and your "always on" connection is internet2 or internet3 then no it will not work.

I belive the font color is based on the theme you choose/make. There is not a stand alone option to change the color of the font on the device.

Then in order for mms to work you will have to create another connection using the wap gateway and then check/send mms using that connection.

You can't have it both ways.

You can't send MMSs through Internet2 (or internet3), so if you have both defined and "auto choose" then the phone can't leave the session up.

Unless you need VPN there's no reason to do that any more - T-Mobile opened the ports on wap for those with MDAs and SDAs (and a data plan) so it works fine without that nonsense....

Actually mine stopped working again as of this morning so I still have to use both the wap and the internet2 gateways with auto pick selected. Called support and they too also verified this and for now this is the only work around I can use.

Mrpena, if you want both and want the setting to be on auto pick then you will have to lose the gprs always on hack. Only way around it if your wap gateway will not get you online, sucks yes, but at least it works.

Sorry to hop in, but I've decided that the MDA was just too much of a hassle and that I'm better off with something a little easier on my brain.

That being said, I just received 8 text messages within the first 30 minutes of having my new t809 (yes, it already has dust particles under the screen), showing me the headers of my new gmail's that have come in.

Why am I still receiving email alerts via text messages through this phone even though it is not an MDA??? Can someone help me turn this feature OFF?

I apologize in advance for not having the time to read the last 30 pages of this thread, as I kept up with the first 40 or so.

Thanks.

PS -> I sold my MDA on ebay and made $150 more than what I paid for it.

I've had the MDA for 10 days now and it definitely is a keeper. I've purchased several PPC programs and am trialing six, and have installed several registry tweaks. My biggest concern at first was the smallish screen for full PPC usage, but my eyes have adjusted from my old Jornada 3.5" screen to the new 2.8". The screen is sharper and brighter so that makes up for the smaller size. And it's certainly an improvement over my Kyocera 7135!

Anyway, I have several issues that I'm hoping someone can assist me with:

1. I cannot get the wifi G registry tweak to work. The registry has changed, but I can only connect via wfi when my router is in B-only or Mixed mode, and I suspect it connects at B when in Mixed mode. It's not too important since, even at B speed, I typically get between 850 and 950 kbs on the dslreports.com 600k speed test, but I am curious what may be causing this behavior.

2. For those of you with Spb Pocket Plus 3.1: Have you gotten the Backlight Up and Backlight Down options on the Close button to work? They appear on the drop-down menu on the X button, but when I select them nothing happens. I thought I'd ask here before reporting it to Spb.

3. Occasionally, not always, after soft resetting from a registry tweak, the backlight will not come on. It comes on briefly with the T-mobile splash screen, but goes off before the Today screen comes up. Powering off and back on doesn't bring it back. I have to find a bright light and navigate through Start -> Settings -> System -> Backlight on the dark screen. There I see the slider is all the way to the left, even though I always leave it at the first tick mark from the left. When I move the slider to the right, the backlight comes on. Has anybody encountered this?

4. The clock only shows up on my Today task bar. It disappears from all other program task bars. Is this normal or the result of having Spb Plus and/or Pocket Informant installed?

5. Another registry tweak that may not be working is the one for making PIE appear as MSIE 6.0. When I go to www.disneyland.com/ap it comes back telling me I should upgrade my browser to 6.0. That site, anyway, doesn't seem to recognize my registry settings. If anyone knows of any other sites I can test with, I'd appreciate hearing about them.

Thanks for any help. And double-thanks for all the posters who have alerted me to all the wonderful tweaks and supplied the settings for getting my T-Mobile web to work.

FYI: I-mate has released a new ROM update for the K-Jam today. It has the aku2.0 update on it but there is some mixed thoughts on A2DP. I am planning to update right now, will let you know how it goes.

Please do, I have seen mixed results already from those who have downloaded.

Ok flashed the ROM. Now I just need to reinstall my software and drop in my settings and away I should go.

Bare bones though it seems peppier. We'll see when I am done.

http://www.bevhoward.com/ASync.htm

As for me, I am not running one, so I'll continue to try to find out for us any information I can. Please continue to post any information you may have on this issue.

UPDATE: After another call to tech support at TMobile they suggested a work around and so far I think it works. I have yet to sync w/my USB but at least the icon/program has not opened up again. If you want to try it yourself, here goes...

1. Activesync>Menu>Configure Server>
2. Under Server Address: Type anything!
3. Box is checked "This server requires an encrypted connection> Next>
4. User Name: Type anything you want
5. Password: Type anything you want
6. Domain: Nothing
7. Advanced > Next > Uncheck all items to sync > Finish

1. Activesync>Menu>Schedule
2. Peak Times > Manually
3. Off-Peak Times > Manually
4. Uncheck "use above settings when roaming & send outgoing items immediately.
5. OK > close Activesync.

I even performed a soft reset on my device and it hasn't opened ASync yet.
Hope this helps others with the same issue!!! Let me know if it works for you.

OK, new ROM is up and running. So far so good. I wish we had Exchange 2003 to test the push email. Will report later how it runs when I have more time to play around.

Let us know if you think the reception is better (RF, stability, not searching) There doesn't seem to be a consensus on that with the T-Mobile ROM.

Works great and synchronizing is still perfect with pc....good call

Well I will say this, I ahve always had good reception here in the LA area. Occasionally I would have issues comig out of the parking garage with it picking up the signal, but never too long. Also the Radio Firmware is 2.07 which should yield some improved performance.

Has anyone easily removed their boxwave screen protector? I got the antiglare clear touch, and there's this spec of dust that was flying in the air and got stuck to the sticky part before I put it on. Other than that, I did a pretty good installation with no bubbles. Is it still sticking after running it under water?

Yes although I dont think it looks as nice once you run it under water. Also I didnt find it very easy at all to remove which imo is a good thing but I had to use a small suction cup to remove mine

hey shackk, "dont think it looks as nice" how? Just wondering if I should put up with the lil spec of dirt or try to wash it off. Also, where'd you get the small suction cup? I was thinking of using some chewing gum hahaha

I just got back from a Cingular store and tried the Rokr headphone adapter. It only gave sound out of the right channel. I fiddled with it and it never gave stereo.

Posted by: vdubvr6

To add to the information on the E1 ROKR headset, I too must say it is only somewhat compatible. I had the “sound only from one side” problem. That was not too much of a big deal to me, because I should have one ear open, as this was at work. But I was embarrassed when the phone rang from the speaker and NOT the headset. This is a BIG no no. To me that is incompatibility.

I dont know to me it just didnt look as clear/crisp as it did when I first put in on. Dont get me wrong it still looks nice, I just had to turn up the brightness a bit to get the same effect. So I would try to pull it off and remove the spec without washing first and see what happens, then change the protector out every 6mos or so depending on use.

As for the suction cup lol I just went to the grocery store and got one of those deals you use to hang pictures from on a window. They are really small and was only like a buck or somethin like that then you dont have to worry about scratchin the screen with your nail or anything. The screen could be durable enough for that but I didnt want to take the chance.

As for chewing gum, lmfao......wtf are you thinking?!?!?! j/k

Looks like there might be a new version of the MDA ROM coming out. CHeck out the following post. #23 in the thread.
http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/show...59997#post59997

Additionally, I spoke with T-Mo CSR yesterday and he confirmed a new release would be coming soon.

Here is the link to the MDA suport page on T-Mo to watch for the release.
http://support.t-mobile.com/main.ht...d7-40b52cf362eb

Under handheld section in the middle, when they release the new version, a system update link will appear at the top.

FYI, my MDA finally showed up yesterday. Ordered 2-21 PM. Unfortunately the outer box seal AND the inner box seal were broken. Being the conservative that I am, I call CSR and recommendation is to return the phone for a NEW one. More waiting!

lol.. Check out the feature summary page on the MDA support site at TMobile.

JAVA virtual machine (J2ME, CLDC1.1, MIDP 2.0)

Thanks for the heads up! Very curious to see what's in this one. I had seen posts elsewhere to the effect that iMate had released a new ROM (Qtek as well I believe?), so there's probably a new general base version that they're all working from, being released as each retail company applies their customizations and (hopefully) runs the new release through some sort of regression testing (Yes...I know...but I have to hope they do SOME testing!).

Maybe they'll leave Java in this next release...

Bummer. The open unit is likely one of those returned by the folks who jumped on the new device, having no idea that it's actually a Windows-experience on a mobile device, with all the need for tweaking and care that this implies. Probably had hardly any use at all, and T-Mobile probably didn't do much more than verify that everything was there and then do a hard reset. But...like you, I would just about always prefer to get a brand new unit. Hopefully you'll have it soon - good luck! If you don't mind tinkering, this is really a pretty amazing device for the money, and can become incredibly useful. I'm loving mine...

No. Mark and I talked and the call timers were all zeros. It was certainly opened but had no time on it. I know how to clear those but its quite a bit of effort and I doubt very much that T-Mobile did - its more likely it was opened but never actually used.

Nonetheless, new means new, and if the seals are broken.....

Oh! More bad news. I have shipped the original MDA back. Now I am told that I am not even on a back order list now! I need to keep checking back with T-Mobile (they have also grasiously offered to call me back in a week) to re-order the MDA. Their system is not allowing any new orders on upgrades due to the loack of devices in stock. They were "nice" enough to offer me 200 bonus minutes for my inconvinience. They also suggested I re-register on the be the first to know site. Maybe I'll get notification this time as never did get notification the first time.
Anyone have the original BeTheFirstToKnow link?

Me too. I ordered my MDA the morning it was released and got it 2 days later - but I still haven't received my notification, despite signing up on "be the first" as soon as they put up that page.

Is it possible to have macromedia flash on the MDA? Like to view such websites in full (such as Gianfrancoferre.com or giorgioarmani.com). I read there is a way to view it, but you have to install a beta version of macromedia flash player onto your MDA, and its just a whole big process.

anyone else know of anyways to do this?

EDIT::
Nevermind. I figured it out. Pretty neat. Anybody else try it?

Is your network connection for GPRS the same one you use for MMS?

Are you using the same APN for GPRS and MMS?

What APN(s) are you using?

I currently reside in New York; got the MDA the first day it came out and google.com never worked. However, I was in Tahoe this past weekend and was able to access google.

Looks like the GPRS configurations are different for each network. I haven't had time to call this problem in yet.

Anyways, what I did was go here:

http://www.macromedia.com/software/...ketpc/2002.html

Click where you see: "Download Macromedia Flash Player 6 for Pocket PC 2003 Installer (EXE, 473K)" and save it someplace where you can go back and use it (I saved it on the desktop).

Then after its done downloading, open up the file, following after the installation, if you have activesync, a screen will pop up and say something around the lines of "The next time you connect activesync to your mobile device, this software will be placed on it." Then after you take out the plug and put it back in, activesync connects to your phone, it'll install itself. Then it'll say something around the lines of "follow further instructions on your phone if any."

Go to your phone and the installation should be complete. I tested it on myspace w/ a page that had music, worked perfectly. I could even pause the track and play it back like you normally can on a PC. Also tested it on seanjohn.com (has flash) and it worked great. Seems like this little program really makes my pocket PC really feel like a Pocket 'PC'.

Any help needed im available all the time on AIM or on here.

Thanks, Jay. The clock setting worked. I guess I'll contact Spb about the Backlight options not working.

I'm in Oakland California and can confirm that wap.voicestream.com now works with my MDA for internet connectivity whereas before it didn't - I had to use internet2.voicestream.com and wap.voicestream.com for MMS

Using a single connection I can now be on-line streaming music (say) and send an MMS. So far receiving seems to still be a problem. Either it takes a VERY long time for MMS messages to come in, or the notification isn't received until I'm off the GPRS connection completely - as soon as I disconnect I get the MMS within a minute or so, on GPRS I'm just waiting, waiting...

Posted by: moschops

Anyone tried playing with the software data and header compression options for data connections? Is it worthwhile or will it just suck more power for minimal benefit?

Unable to install apps to MiniSD
Just got my 1GB MiniSD. I had been waiting to install the larger applications (Microsoft Reader v2.2.3 & Voice Command v1.5). When the MiniSD came I tried the installations. In both cases the checkbox next to "Install program into the default installation folder" was greyed out but checked, not allowing an installation to anywhere but main memory. During the installation of Voice Command, there is a message that clearly states that it can be installed on removable memory cards.

Anyone else have similar problems or know a solution to allow the greyed out selection to be unchecked?

Can someone please give me a link to a post that has a step-by-step walkthrough of how to download Registry Wizard tweaks onto the MDA from a PC or a MAC? I'm new at this and don't know where to begin and I'm going in circles trying to search for it. I'm sure someone has posted how to do it on here somewhere. I'm specifically interested in 1) turning SMS msg confirmation OFF, 2) hiding SIM contacts and 3) installing Magic Button to close applications.

Thanks in advance.

P.S. For those who have turned off the SMS confim, does it totally eliminate the confirmation, or just turn off the vibration when the phone in vibrate mode? I don't mind seeing the msg...but the long a** vibration is annoying.

Anyone having any issues with reminders? I swear I got a SMS message at around 4:30 in the morning one day - and didn't know it unitl I went to use phone a good 8 hours or so later. No beeps, no vibration, notta.

Under settings - sounds and notifications - notification tab - there apprs to be one generic "reminders" event - set to play a sound, display mesage on screen , flass the light and vibrate. Doesn't say how often, etc.

Is this truly the only setting for ANY type of reminder? Missed call, sms, etc. Wonder why mine did absolutely nothing....maybe it did while I was asleep - then gave up?
lmao

You can set up a different alert, notification method, etc.. for text, email, mms, etc.. in that same menu. The "reminders" is usually only for calendar and task items.

Posted by: djsars

So there is no alert for a missed SMS message? Oh now that's lovely.

Now that I examine those options more in depth - it appears the only type of missed anything reminder is a "missed call" reminder and the only option on by default is flash light for 15 minutes. I wonder if you set an audible alert, how long and how often it would play? Anyone test that yet?

Under new text message for example you can have it play a sound. No if you want a reminder in case you miss one, check the flash light for and choose "no limit"

As for the audible alert it will only play once, since repeat is grayed out.

At times, not always, I can't do wireless anything on my new MDA. (I live/work in NYC.)

When I go under settings, it says "Current Network: Searching..."

Then, when I tap "Find Network" it gives me the message "Registering on the Network."

It does this for hours sometimes. I power down the phone. Remove the battery and SIM card. Replace them. And it still doesn't work.

I'm new to the MDA. I'm new to mobile WiFi, pretty much. Somebody please help. I'm getting frustrated with this thing.

I too had this problem today. But my reason may be different. I had installed the IBM java system, and it had somehow disabled my GPRS/EDGE and phone capabilities. Well, it more or less made them unstable. After a reboot, and still no luck, I had to uninstall the program, and all was better.

If that is completely off base, and you did not install this program, it could be a faulty SIM card, unless it is brand new...

does anyone know of a way to change the ringtone folder. i have a 1 gb minisd and have a bunch of mp3s on it, i would like to point the ringtone folder to that instead of having to copy every file onto the actual device. has anyone tried removing the \windows\rings folder, and puting a link to another folder with the same name in its place?

one ohter thing, i am not signed up for any data plan, i am usually around a wireless network, but i am getting GPRS for free. all i have is the 'Get More Plus' plan and 1000 extra texts. anyone else noticed this?

not sure if this is off topic or not but notifications and reminders for missed calls, voicemails, or text messages have always been an issue with me. starting with my i-mate jam and now my mda, i've used phonealarm by http://pocketmax.net . it's not free, but was worth every penny to me. very configurable and customizable to your needs.

Im having a small problem. (Nothing major)

There's a program that I've recently deleted (GPS IDEAS) but the icon still remains in the programs files folder. When I try to open the program, it says the components and what-not aren't in the folder, so its a blank folder inside, but the icon is still under the program files folder. Is there a way that I can delete the icon from my computer?

I finally have IBM's J9 MIDP2 jvm running on my MDA. I also installed Google Local Mobile 1.1.1, and I can run it from the J9 emulator, search for addresses, display maps, etc.

BUT...when I try to go to satellite view, I get an error message that reads, "This phone won't display satellite images. (JPEGs)."

I've seen this error posted in a few threads...but no answer.

Any ideas? Any flags I should be setting to convince Google Local that my MDA can display satellite images?

Also: should I be able to get this directly from the Google Local web page? Or is it always necessary to load the midlet via the J9 emulator?

TIA...

Posted by: snoslicer8

You need to go back to google local web page, and load the java midlet for the LAST phone option on the auiovox menu. It displays satellite images.

I hope it gets straightened out for you. I've been following you for a bit in these threads. My goal is to make you love the MDA.

Also, I am stoked for a new official rom. You know, one that doesn't have retarded limitations like the Edge icon, 802.11g, and a camera program that doesn't make me want to hurt small children.

Hey! Watch that now! I have 4 small children! Maybe that's why I have a lot of patience with big children, like T-Mo!
Seriously, right now, I am #11 on back order list with local store which has PROMISED to sell me MDA for upgrade price, when they get a new batch in. Also, CSR with saves has PROMISED to call me every day (uh...yeah, right) with an update on the availability of the MDA. I will also be watching the MDA support site like a hawk for the update. Use File Explorer and navigate to:
My Device>>Windows>>Start Menu>>Programs

Locate the offending icon and delte it.

I got my MDA on Thursday and spent most of the day on Friday getting it up to speed. Now I find out that there is a new ROM coming out (which is good) but which mean I lose everything - so that means I need to do a backup. Has anyone use Sprite backup on the MDA - this worked great with my Ipaq as it restored all of my settings after a ROM update or hard reset ? Also what all is being updated as I have seen some answers but not a complete list ? Thanks !

Posted by: djsars

You haven't seen the class action lawsuit against verizon for misleading customers on the Motorola V710 phone have you? The lawsuit not only won in court, but also if I remember correctly an appeal proces. Verizon is paying a good amount of money or services to people who bought the phone under the false claim that it fully supported Bluetooth. Unforunately I sent in my claim form late and get left off the lawsuit. (sigh)

I see no difference between that lawsuit and the one that should be filed against T-Mobile for claiming the phone has java support.

i notice that my free memory gets reduced as the hours pass thru the day even if i have same amount of programs open which is usually email and calendar and activesync.

if i soft reset, my free memory sits at around 23MB and then in about 6 hours... it's down to about 18mb... and then lower, and then lower.

is this normal? if not, how do i keep the free memory at more consistent levels?

Posted by: djsars

On another memory note - is there a way to tell what's taking up x amount of program memory room on the device? I know you can go to the memory tab and see/close the running applications, but it would be nice to see what's eating up 25 mb of program memory when I have no applications running under running programs.

There's gotta be a way to do it....maybe?

Posted by: sockeyes51

Wouldn't the OS take up that memory? I would think that is what might be taking up that 25mb of program memory. Just a thought.

Posted by: nihow88

I tried some commercial ones but it's not working with MDA, where can i find one work with MDA?? thanks in advance,

I can not remove Opera browser from my MDA, the activesync doesn't even show it's install, how do i remove the opera from MDA?

Posted by: djsars

I'm sure most of it is OS, but I"m guessing that some of it is also due to programs that I have installed.....maybe that are on the today screen, etc.....

I have the Invisible Shield installed on the screen.

First impressions - its VERY different than any of the other products. Its a "wet" install, which has its good points - you can reposition it if you goof it without problems, among others.

I'm going to pull and reinstall it tonight, as I got one tiny bubble when it all dried (you can't touch the unit overnight while it dries once installed)

I like the protection - a lot. Its got a bit of a "sticky" feel to it with the stylus, but that's ok. Still ok for letter recognition and no problems otherwise.

My initial impression is that its very nice and well worth it - going to put the other pieces on this evening as well. The "full armor" comes with pieces for the back cover and sides.

All in all I vastly prefer it to the "hard" protectors I've seen... and it has essentially zero impact on screen press sensitivity....

Where is the voice memo app for the MDA? I'm amazed it doesn't have this kind of app out of the box... Anyone got any recommendations for a third party app - otherwise I'm reduced to creating MMS messages and saving them to draft.

There is an included voice memo app on the MDA. If you go into the programs menu and open up notes. When you open "notes" click new. At the bottom should be a recording toolbar. If not, click menu and activate the recording toolbar. Another faster way to do this is by holding down the voice speed dial button on the upper right hand side of the MDA. Don't just press it, you have to hold it down to open up the recording program.

The "sticky" surface won't interfere with block recognition, i.e., writing out a word or two at a time on the screen?

I'm especially interested to hear about the full-body wrap. If that really goes on skin-tight and doesn't degrade the appearance of the phone I'll be *very* interested.

BTW: on another subject - maybe reply (if you have time) should be in a separate post. I (and a few others) are still having trouble with google local. I thought I had followed the directions, but something is still not right. It was tedious, but I had managed to installed J9 v5.2.7, and replaced it with v6.0.0 for WM5. It loads and executes the GLM 1.1.1 midlet -- I can see maps, I can search, I can generate routes -- but when I try to satellite images, it states emphatically that my phone cannot show satellite imagery (JPEGs). Also - I'm running the midlet directly from the J9 emulator -- should I also be able to just surf to google local? If so...that's not working either -- shows maps, but no option to bring up satellite images.

My browser still identifies itself to the server as PIE...should I be running the hack that makes it ID itself at IE6?

At a loss here...any advice appreciated.

TIA...

Does that actually start recording a voice note on your phone, or just take you to the Notes app? On mine it does the latter. However I'd previously installed some software called AEButtonPlus which I suspect may have screwed up my buttons...

Oh well, I expect when the next ROM image comes out I'll have a chance to fix that!

What midlet app did you download for your JVM? The "generic" midlet claims that our phones can't display jpeg (satellite) images. You need to download the last phone listed under the Audiovox category. That will give you full functionality.

FYI: I just installed J9 and the "Generic" GLM midlet and it displays satellite images no problem. After selecting Generic make sure you select the "Advanced MIDP 2.0" version. I don't see any other functionality that is missing.

Now I'm happy - just need some cool MIDP games to load up, and a decent mail client and I'll be happy.

Posted by: snoslicer8

Yeah, I did install the advanced midp 2.0 under generic, and that's the one that said it couldn't display jpg images. So, I went with the audiovox midp, and it works great now.

Posted by: Dezl0ck

I was wondering if there was any secret to putting in custom sounds for notifications. I'm able to put custom ringtones in \device\Windows\Rings so no problem there. I noticed that the other sounds are in \Windows\ so I drop my .wav file off in the folder and it does appear on the list under Sounds & Notifications. So I selected type as "Messaging: New e-mail message" and selected the test.wav file as the tone I wanted to use. When I clicked the play button no sound came out which didn't look good. So I send a test email to myself and not only does it not play the sound, the phone doesn't vibrate which is also selected as a notification option. Am I missing something else here since I'm assuming a .wav file is a .wav file? The test.wav file does play in Windows Media Player on the device, but it isn't working as a notification option.

Pics won't do you any good - the shield is basically invisible once installed!

It covers the screen, the back of the case, and the side plastic light-colored pieces. It is multiple pieces that are installed separately; for instance, the battery cover is a separate piece. There is no coverage on the front of the case surrounding the screen itself.

http://www.theinvisibleshield.com

In general I like it. No problems with block recognition in my experience. They also offer a 30 day "if you think it sucks we'll refund your money" guarantee - hard to beat that one.

Anyone know of any application out there that will let me watch a quicktime video that's on website on my MDA?? For testing purposes - for instance the video on www.lazymunie.com .

Any suggestions would be great.

Interesting... so far, I've been trying the "generic" one, "Advanced MIDP 2.0" version.

I'll take a look at the Audiovox one tomorrow -- that's for the SMT5600 I guess.

What I find odd is that moschops, and kdenninger I believe as well as a few others, installed the generic / Advanced MIDP 2.0 version and they report that it's working fine.

I'm wondering if there are any other settings that we've set up differently. For example -- I have NOT added any hack to get PIE to identify itself as IE6 -- have you?

Also - I DID make a registry change (yesterday I think?) so that PIE would accept WAP pages on WAP sites, but also respond to HTML sites properly. That was posted in one of these threads yesterday or the day before. It let me get to HoFo's WAP site, for example.

Have you made either of those changes?

Also: do you have to load the midlet via the J9 emulator, or do you see full Google Local via the website, including the satellite view?

Posted by: kdenninger

Nope - I made no change to PIE at all in that regard, as doing that broke some things I like about the way PIE works out of the box on certain sites (particularly MSNBC)

I just bring up the midlet via the J9 VM when I want to use it.

You have to install it via ActiveSync, first connect it to the MDA and then run the exe from your desktop as if you were installing regular software...I think you can figure out the rest,if not let me know.

i hope this question hasn't been answered yet... i tried searching but came up empty.

on the mda, once i get on a wifi connection, it remains in the mda's connections list. in order to get to a different or new wifi connection, i have to manually go in and select "remove settings:"

settings > connections > wireless LAN > menu > network cards

then hold down on the available wifi connections to disable the ones that you aren't near.

so my question is, is there any way to disable the mda from remembering all its wifi connections so that it can just link up to the available network, rather than one that is invalid at the time of trying to get wifi? thanks!

You don't have to remove your settings in order to get a new connection. Assuming your MDA remembers your home settings, if you turn on WiFi when you're at a public hotspot, it will check out the local networks -- NOT find the SSID of your home network, but it WILL find the public WLAN and offer to connect. If there's more than one available, it will offer a list of WLAN's by SSID, and let you choose which to connect to. Works quite well in fact. The only time you'd have to tell it to drop old settings would be if you need to change the connection parameters on an existing, saved, WiFi connection.

Also: do you have to load the midlet via the J9 emulator, or do you see full Google Local via the website, including the satellite view?

I initially loaded by click on the file from my documents which brought up j9 and then I installed it and ran it. I haven't treid GL via the web - I suspect it may work with Opera Mobile - it seems to have really good JavaScript support and could well handle Ajax - unfortunately the latest beta seems unable to display the entire page when I bring up a Google maps view - it truncates the page and doesn't display any map at all.

Does anyone have Orb working via EDGE on the MDA? I can use it via Wifi but not EDGE...perhaps because Port 80 is blocked? I'm on the $19.99 T-Mobile Internet plan...has anyone tried using Orb with a different port for Windows Media streaming? Let me know thanks!

EDIT: Well I seem to have gotten it working on EDGE, but the connection (about 130 k) seems to be too slow to stream video without frequent rebuffering. Anyone else experiencing this?

If there's more than one available, it will offer a list of WLAN's by SSID, and let you choose which to connect to. Works quite well in fact. The only time you'd have to tell it to drop old settings would be if you need to change the connection parameters on an existing, saved, WiFi connection.

i wish it was this easy. the stupid thing kept trying to search for an unavailable wifi network because it was on there earlier. like today when i was trying to get the hotspot connection at my local starbucks, the mda kept reverting back to my home network, even though i've chosen to be on the hotspot network. it was weird. the only way i was able to stop it from doing this was by disabling my home network.

Anyone recommend a screen protector for the MDA? because using the stylus to dial is crazy that can take forever so I rather use my fingers on the screen

I cant find the answer to this question....

If I set up my email on the MDA will the device use SMS to get the mail (messenging) or use data?

Posted by: eep02b

Has anyone been able to send a file to another phone over bluetooth?? If so how did you do it. Is sending files over bluetooth disabled on this phone??

Works fine but video isn't great due to the rebuffering.... if you're getting too much buffering you can set a slower speed manually, which will help the codec - at some loss in quality.

It uses data only UNLESS you have T-Mobile send you the "My Email" triggers - then it uses SMS for the triggers ONLY (the mail itself still runs data in that case)

OK... So I had my first MDA crash since getting it on 2/21.
It froze up while I was closing a program using SBP Pocket Plus. I did a soft reset with stylus. Then it froze up again on the start up screen, as it said it was starting in safe mode. After 2 more resets, it started up in safemode.

While in safe mode, I used the remove program utility to remove Pocket Plus (just in case it was the culprit). After another reset, I noticed somethings missing from my today screen items. I went to the today screen utility to "Check Off" the missing items on the today screen, but they were gone. The only today screen items that were available to "check off" and display were calendar, tasks, owner info, and date. The Device lock option on the today screen is also missing.

Does anyone know how I can restore these options?
I really don't want to hard reset my mda back to factory specs.

Thanks.

Anyone else have similar problems or know a solution to allow the greyed out selection to be unchecked?

Just received my 2GB MiniSD Sandisk card from fastmemoryman on eBay see his store at http://stores.ebay.com/eMartBuy-USA over the weekend and it works great! Sorry you are having trouble. I did a soft reset just before I stuck in the new card.

I'll check this out again over the next day or two if I have the chance (this afternoon and evening were totally booked). But I DO have my home WiFi network programmed in, with security, password, etc. -- and when I'm in another location and turn on WiFi, it seems to skip past my home WLAN and display whatever local WiFi network is available, offering me a chance to connect. I click on the one I want, and I'm connected almost immediately. Then when I'm home again, it hooks right up to my home WLAN.

Not sure what's different about your setup and mine, but it really does seem transparent in my case, and almost effortless.

i'll double check everything again tomorrow. as of right now sitting at my local borders, i no longer have the problem even though i was on my home network before i came here. this thing definitely quirky. i'm still getting used to everything.

In general, I suspect that the oddness we're all seeing is essentially seeing the "Windows personality" superimposed on otherwise stable, predictable hardware. This is all SO Windows...

That being said...I've generally beaten XP into submission, and managed to do so with all prior versions after learning their unique oddities (going back a LONG time ago...to the first PC's, DOS only, Windows 3.0 vs GEM, etc).

What we all really need to realize is that this is a true Windows experience on a portable platform. As quirky as ever, but amenable (after some research and experimentation) to vast customization and personalization.

Good luck with the WiFi connection -- hopefully it will settle down and become predictable for you.

Wish I was at Borders or Panera's now, with a nice latte... Instead, just shooed our guests out (after a small get-together that lasted TOO long), got our kids to bed, and have to look forward to my alarm going off at 6am, getting my kids out the door to school, and getting caught up with all the work I was supposed to be doing this evening... NOT the way I like to start a week! Especially since it looks like I may have an out-of-state gig for the next several weeks...

Can I start the weekend over?????

Does anyone know of any AIM clients out there that will work with t-zones and/or sms? I have unlimited sms and t-zones and need something other than the built in chat client.

Unfortunately, because I am t-zones and have to use a proxy, I can't use agile messenger, which needs full TCP/IP access.

Any ideas?

I have re-encoded all my movies into "Handheld" versions using Pocket DVD Wizard (it can encode movies already in Divx, WMV, etc. as well). I then put all these pocket versions (well over 200 of them) into another shared folder for Orb to see. Once I have these movies in "pocket" quality, I am streaming them over GPRS no problem. I am guessing this has something to do with the codec not having to work so hard as Orb uploads the movies to their servers, then sends them to me. I hope this helps some of you guys...the Pocket DVD Wizard software works VERY well, and it's cheap.

Posted by: snoslicer8

Yes, this is disabled on the MDA, and to my knowledge, no one has found a hack, registry or otherwise, to enable it. It may just be removed from the WM5 software, for all we know.

Posted by: kdenninger

PARTIAL Obex capability is in there but shut off, but FULL Obex, as far as I know, simply isn't in WM5.

Posted by: snoslicer8

Yeah, I think you can SEND Obex, but can't receive...or something like that. When I try to initiate Obex from my PC to my MDA, the MDA gives the PC a response of "Business Card Not Available" or something like that.

RTFM - RTFT - Google is your friend - etc.

It will use both.

Has ANYONE been able to get the GPS Settings to appear with either the registry hack program or a manual reg edit?

Posted by: Operation619

The Windows Mobile BT Stack sucks ballz. It's probably one of the very few complaints I have with my MDA.

Posted by: g_bruin

I am having trouble connecting to the Internet via my home wifi. I can see that the MDA is connected through Wifi Settings, the MDA has an IP address, the connection is at full strength, but I can't get any pages to load. pIE shows "Locating..." but it times out.

I have kept up with this thread but I can't find an answer.

Help?!?!?

Thanks.

didnt know the mda had gps in it and well when ever i try and sign on to the msn messenger i get something as to

"temporary conditions currently prevent connecting to the pocket msn service"

i get it to connect every once in a while can any one help

Posted by: snoslicer8

The GPS menu hasn't shown its face on my MDA, despite adding/editing all of the registry keys mentioned, and so on. I'm wondering if T-Mobile removed that option, as they did Java. It's in other WM5 builds.

So how can you SEND Obex??

Posted by: snoslicer8

SENDing is accomplished by selecting the "beam" option when you click and hold on a file in file explorer. You can "beam" by IR or BT.

The MDA doesn't have GPS...but WM5 has a control panel in it to show basic GPS info when connected by BT or serial cable. It just seems that T-Mo's WM5 build has the GPS app removed.

Posted by: gizm0luvsu

just wondering but is there ne way to put certain apps onto the start screen (the today screen) for like a desktop effect like shortcuts

Correct, the MDA doesn't have GPS built-in. However, I do use GPS daily and not having this feature available is a major PITA. Especially with the way the MS BT stack is implemented. Ugh.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought he was going crazy with the reg edits.

Besides Java and now GPS, is there any other registry edit that isn't working? Anyone? Perhaps we can compile a list and add it to the FAQ.

Posted by: g_bruin

One option is to use SPB PocketPlus. It lets you heavily customize the Today screen with icons for programs, settings, etc...

Maybe there is a bug in my programming because when i chose the beam option i don't see a way to do it using bluetooth. All i see is beam by IR.....

hmm ive had this problem like 2 times today where it wont go to the home screen and it will stick at the programs screen can any one help me

You need to make sure BT is turned on (obviously) before selecting Beam. Also, make sure you're not sending a file that came on the MDA...microsoft or T-Mobile probably encrypted it in a way that blocks out beaming. Once this is done, make sure you are within BT range of a device that you either have a partnership with and is accepting OBEX transfers, or is at least discoverable to your phone. On the beam screen, mine shows "IR" first with a "click to send by IR" link next to it...underneath that is a "Searching" dialog that pops up my computer name when it finds the BT adapter. Note that I have yet to get it to successfully complete that transfer. HOWEVER, when I right click on something on my desktop, and choose "send to->bluetooth->WM_Device, it DOES show up as a transfer on my MDA. Not sure what I did, but it looks like BT transfers might have been enabled both ways on my MDA.

I'll do some research on this and report back.

Posted by: snoslicer8

SUCCESS!!!

I have now successfully OBEX file transferred a file both ways: from my MDA to my Bluetooth Exchange folder on my PC, and from the desktop on my PC directly to the MDA. Neither file was sent while the MDA was connected via activesync.

I did nothing to enable the send by bluetooth. To enable Bluetooth receive, I used the latest version of Registry Wizard, and checked the "Enable Bluetooth Receive" option on the second page. I'm not sure if this will work the same for sending/receiving from another device, but it works with my PC.

So to send by bluetooth i would have to have the registry wizard and enable bluetooth send. Thanks. I'll test this when i get back home. I'm crossing my fingers!!! If not, i'll report back.

Posted by: snoslicer8

NO...I just said I did nothing to enable SEND by BT. I had to use Registry Wizard to enable RECEIVE by BT. You should be able to "beam" by BT out of the box.

no windows mobile 2005 cannot do that. You might be able to put them in the system tray with a 3rd party app. If you want real shorcuts in a desktop like today screen then use wisbar desktop (google it)

Thanks alot, It worked!!! Now i just need to find a way to get Registry Wizard!!! I'm not able to get to the site to download it because the site is blocked all over campus. Is anyone able to email me the Registry Wizard file since i can't get to it??

go to http://htcwizard.westlands.org/ as one of the entries should have a direct download of registry wizard...I don't think it redirects you to another site to get it...

Thats what i'm saying, I can't go to that site. I'm in college right now, and for some reason the site it blocked. And i'm asking if there is some way that somebody could send me the file whether in an email, IM, or somewhere else i could try to get it since its blocked...
