I have just noticed an issue with the Qtek test rom. Every now and then my mda just soft resets out of no where and for seemingly no reason. Has anyone else had this issue/problem?

I currently have installed:

Spb Weather
Spb Pocket Plus
Spb To Play
Open NETCF

Mini SD:

Total Commander
Agile Messenger
Reversi
Freecell
Tmobile Internet Settings.cab
Registry Wizard

Current Rom info is in my sig.

5. OK > close Activesync.

I even performed a soft reset on my device and it hasn't opened ASync yet.
Hope this helps others with the same issue!!! Let me know if it works for you.

Thanks for offering this. It should be put on the MDA FAQ list. It not only worked for me, but I stopped having such drastic battery loss.

Hi Everyone,
This is Tmobile's response to my email stating our irritation over their claims that the MDA supports JAVA. Since my knowledge base is far inferior to many of you, I'll let you comment on what this means.

Thank you for contacting T-Mobile and allowing us to assist you with your inquiry. We understand the importance of having this information; wed be more than glad to look into this for you and address your concerns.

The MDA does support Java Scripting, like many other PDA devices, but to a certain extent. Since it is not a full PC, it will not be able to fully translate the language, so as a result you will come across pages that will give you an error with respects to java scripting. Below, I have included some of the browser specifications for you to review.

Some core specifications are:
· HTML 4.01 supported except for tags: ABBR, Q, OPTGROUP. Supports most of W3C Document Object Model Level 1 of DHTML.
· Browser supports tables and forms,. Exact rendering may vary from desktop browser.
· Security: 40-bit and 128-bit SSL, SSL2, SSL3, TLS 1.0, Passport v1.4
· javascript: uses Windows CE JScript 5.5, ECMA-262 compliant. JScript is a Microsoft variant of standard JavaScript. Sites optimized for JScript may render better in Internet Explorer Mobile, sites using JavaScript will have variable results.
· Browser ID reports as Mozilla/4.0 and MSIE 6.0.

In the mean time, for any other troubleshooting or information you may need, please feel free to visit our support site at http://support.t-mobile.com. The site has a tremendous amount of information on our devices, as well as online manuals.

Should you have any further questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via email or at 1-800-937-8997. Thank you for choosing T-Mobile; we appreciate your business.
Have a great day!

Glad it helped! I don't know how to put it on the FAQ list (that might be done through the moderator?)

Well. Here is a good one.
The Boulder, CO store has one MDA laft out of a shippment they got in last week. The will not, however, sell it on the upgrade program. Even to someone like me who has had some 'fun' lately with T-Mobile. If I want to buy it, $479! And yes, I have been a T-Mobile customer, non-stop, for 9 YEARS! Amazing!

Posted by: kdenninger

Nice. Corporate store?

That sort of crap should get a store manager fired, and would if I was running the show.

MSN uses a bunch of back-end message "relays" and servers. They occasionally have to take them down for maintenance, upgrades or service (de-lousing?), the result generally being a message along the lines of what you just saw.

I don't know why you would see a message like that frequently. I don't know their architecture, but it may be that they have a limited set of proxy servers that handle traffic specifically for pocket MSN clients -- servers that might reformat input and output to improve performance on mobile devices -- and maybe these are less reliable than the "standard" servers.

I have the same problem too. When I play MP3s through my 1GB card the sound is very fast and Chipmunk like. Any help?

for some reason my phone wont go back to the today screen even when i click the x like 50 times has that ever happened to ne1 and is there a way to fix it or just soft reset the phone

Posted by: kdenninger

Hit END twice. If that doesn't work you ran it out of memory - soft reset it.

Posted by: i3onk

Ok here is my problem, hope someone can help.

I installed Tweaks2k and used it for the three times it allows. After uninstalling it, I have had one reoccuring problem. After a soft restart, I get a popup asking if I want to let Twkcl.exe run. I cant hit the yes or no button. Eventually it goes away and everything goes back to normal. I am assuming the twkcl.exe is a part of tweaks2k, but I am not possitive. It says it is in the windows folder and I have confirmed that it is there. I have thought about deleting it but wanted to check with you all in here before doing that.

Any suggestions?

Off of this topic, I have read a few posts asking about adding ringtones to the MDA. One very helpful one stated to put the mp3 ringtones you want to add in the windows/rings folder. That worked great for me. I found by accident that the mp3's can also be added to the mydocuments folder and they will still show up as a selectable ringtone.
I have also seen a couple posts about adding your own ringtone for the text messages notifications and such. These files need to be in a wav format of PCM quality and placed into the windows directory. Then you can select them as notification tones. Hope that helped someone.

searched HOFO and Google and still cannot get it to work they just will not find each other. It is driveing me nuts. Any help will be great TIA.

hahaha, i think hofo is the cure for all our mda woes. i was having some weird issues with my wifi where it'd search for an unavailable network instead of hooking up just to what was available. when i asked about it on hofo, it stopped doing it. now this... tooooo weird.

I hope this helps some of you guys...the Pocket DVD Wizard software works VERY well, and it's cheap.

Well I could certainly do that but at least for me, it defeats the purpose of ORB. I want to be able to have regular movie files on my desktop at home and access them remotely via ORB. Downgrading the quality is not only time consuming but also means that I have to keep multiple copies of each video on my desktop. Also, I have hundreds of videos and wanted to be able to just access them on a whim. At that point I might as well just copy video files to my 2 GB miniSD. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Posted by: ilrosewood

I think I have a question that has not been brought up yet in this thread.

Wtf is the download agent?

Posted by: evilninja

How long are your streaming sessions lasting? I'm trying to listen to steaming radio, and it seems I'm only getting about 2 songs in before windows media player tells me it is no longer connected?

Also with Wifi, it shows me connected to the network, but I can't open up IE and use my home's wifi??

i was looking for a step by step instructions on how to install registry wizard. this is my first time on messing with the registry and also on how to do a back up of the phone. I downloaded the files OpenNETCF.SDF.wce4.armv4.cab and RegistryWizard_PPC.ARMV4.cab this are folders but after this I don't know what else to do. need help please!

Posted by: g_bruin

1. Sync your MDA and leave connected.
2. Click on Explore in the ActiveSync screen. Optional: Create a folder in My Documents (I named mine Tweaks)
3. Copy OpenNETCF.SDF.wce4.armv4.cab and RegistryWizard_PPC.ARMV4.cab to the Tweaks (or any folder) in Explore screen
4. Disconnect MDA
5. Go to Start, File Explorer and navigate to the folder which contain these two .cab files.
6. IMPORTANT: Click on OpenNETCF.SDF.wce4.armv4.cab FIRST. Installation should start. It may ask you if you are sure because it is unverified or something similar. Just click Yes.
7. Once installed, click on RegistryWizard_PPC.ARMV4.cab to install this.

Once completed, just navigate to Start, Programs and you should see it!

You may have to do a soft reset but I don't remember...

Perhaps someone else can help with the backing up instructions...

never mind i try it without extracting the files and now it works! funny i try editing the registry with total commander first to add wifi g, but i don't see the difference. I get the same strenght and when i do a bandwidth speed test from cnet.com I get the same results = 510 kbps. Did I did it right or this is just to get access with routers that support g only?

Thank you for that well qualified answer.

Posted by: kdenninger

Well what do you expect? Test and other "special purpose" ROMs are by definition not intended for release and general customer use. Some of them may even have things in them like intentional resets after a given period of time - indeed, Microsoft has been known to do things like this (ever boot Norton Ghost 10.0's "recovery" CD? It has a similar "will reset in 24 hours" thing built in to prevent abuse of the software.)

All sorts of diagnostic "stuff" is frequently found in test releases, and if you run them in a "production" sort of environment, having obtained them as a "leak", you can't complain about stability issues you encounter.

There is an official released rom that is off the same general codebase. I'm running it on my MDA now; it appears to be stable and quite nice and fast. See my entry in the FAQ on this subject if you'd like.

k, i didnt expect anything but a more knowledegeable answer than the one you posted. i understand that this is a "test" rom. i have installed many test, cooked, and other roms on devices in the past and i understand the risks involved in doing so. with that being said, i wanted to know if this in fact was a known issue with this rom. there very well could be something writen on the rom software to designate a soft reset after a certain amount of time and if so fine, are others having the same issue?

it is not an issue to me, i just wanted to see if others had the same experience or even knew about it. i am not trying to argue with you either but if you would have posted this first rather than second you would not have received the response that i typed. i have read your faq post and while you have not experienced issues i have read on some other issues that have kept me from it.....for now but maybe this weekend i will give it a shot.

is there a way to list all running processes, even hidden ones. for example, in the task lists it will just say

synch
myemail

but my free memory is at like 6.7, if i do a soft reset, my free memory gets up to 22.8. anyone know why this is?

Posted by: lanwarrior

There are many Task List manager application, but I primarily use the one that comes with SpB Plus. Also, SpB plus allows me to modify the "OK" button on top-right, whereby if I close the application, it REALLY close the apps, instead of just minimizing it per Winddows Mobile default.

Posted by: true_atlantis

yes i have that one. but what im saying, is look in any task manger, if your runing SpB plus, it will not show up. im thinking there are background processes running that are hiding from the task manager, or soemthing that is running has a mem leak.

I use Magic Button for this but I'm wondering if SpB is worth paying for? What added functionality does it give over Magic Button?

Posted by: lanwarrior

They give many functionalities that will take 2 pages to explain here. But in summary, these are the ones I used the most:

1) Application "Close" function instead of minimize, as mentiond above
2) Today's Screen plug in where you can list all your application. Saves me time rather than going to Start -> Program
3) Modify the hardware button (EXCEPT Soft key) for additional function that does not exist in WM5. I.e. Switch-tab, much like Windows Alt-tab feature. thus, I can have IE open, cut some text, switch to Word, paste it, and switch back to IE, all by pressing the Switch-tab button
4) Add "tabs" function to IE
5) Monitor battery level at the top of the taskbar, viewable in ANY application. Thus, I don't have to go to the Today's screen jsut to check my battery level. Furthermore, it saves memory since there is one less plug-in running.

Check out their website for more function.

I see...well Magic Button has 1 & 5. And the Remap Softkey program from xda developers does 3 (plus soft key if you like). Since both are free and I don't really have much need for the other features, I'll stick with my current setup. Thanks though.

Also what is "Today Timeout" in the Today settings!? It's set to 4 hours right now but I have no idea what it's doing....

So i remember a few pages back that someone tried the audio adapter from the E1 Rokr on the MDA and it was found not to work. Is this true, and if so did it not work at all, or just not in stereo?? I'm looking for the adapter to change the 2.5mm plug to the 3.5mm plug so that i can use my regular headphones with it. My main issue is that i want one thats flexible and not hard like the ones from radio shack. I want one more like the ones that came with the ipaq 1900 series. If anybody can help, please do. And it would be even better if the adapter was at a brick and mortar store instead of a online store because i need to recieve it before friday when i leave for a big trip. Thanks.

Try this one: http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?code=127181 If you rush the shipping it should be there in time. Mine actually shipped 35 minutes after I ordered it the other day (with the lowest priced shipping option).

Ok here's my totally stupid question of the day... So I almost never use the onscreen keyboard, and then every once in a while I pop it up by tapping on it, use it, and send it back from whence it came. Everytime I do that, it then continues to pop up frequently without my asking for it. Eventually it stops. How do I get the onscreen keyboard to only pop up when I tell it to, and to stay gone when I banish it?

Magic Button works just fine if that is all you need.
I don't care for all the xtra fluff - Spb Pocket Plus is great but it's TMI IMO - love those acronyms

Posted by: lanwarrior

I loved to know about this also. How to disable the onscreen input so that it NEVERS pop-up?

Hello Everyone,

So I got my MDA last week and I can tel lI am way behind on tweak for this phone.

So i have been reading about this tweak, and I can't seem to get it to work.

Supposedly to get 802.11g to work we have to do the following on the MDA
HKLM/Comm/TNETWLN1/Parms/
dot11SupportedRateMask=1
dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8

dot11SupportedRateMask is already there so i dont have to make any changes.

when i add dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8 its seems to go into the registry w/o any problems. I do a soft reset, and when i go inot the registy the entry is no longer there.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks

Posted by: evilninja

Did you save that entry before you did the soft reset?
Oh something else that might help is doing a soft reset (2nd method of holding down the power button instead of pushing in the small button on the side with the stylus). Something about it taking time to write that registry edit to the ROM before you reset it. I soft reset my phone by holding down the power button, and it'll ask if you are sure you might lose changes not saved, hit okay, and it should be good. My registry edits are all still there. Now if I could find the one that allows bluetooth file receives, instead of using Registry Tweak.

That might have been my post. I tried a the Rokr headphone adapter from a Cingular store with my MDA and it only gave me sound out of the right channel. I did everything I could to get it to work (twisted it, pulled it out a little, etc.) and still only the right channel.

Shackk:

In regards to your device soft reseting, I haven't heard any widespread comments regarding this. I have been running the Qtek test since it was first leaked and have had no such trouble. Even the memory leakage (at least on my device) is minimal if any, meaning I have never seen anything to substantiate that. I would suspect though that it might have something to do with what software you may be running versus what other are. But the consensus on the test ROM is that it is very stable.

If you are not using A2DP, then you could always give the new Imate 2.16 ROM a try and see if you have the same problems, however I was not a fan of that one and switched back to the Test ROM after a couple of days.

Cheers,

Alex

So i have been reading about this tweak, and I can't seem to get it to work.

Supposedly to get 802.11g to work we have to do the following on the MDA
HKLM/Comm/TNETWLN1/Parms/
dot11SupportedRateMask=1
dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8

dot11SupportedRateMask is already there so i dont have to make any changes.

when i add dot11SupportedRateMaskG=8 its seems to go into the registry w/o any problems. I do a soft reset, and when i go inot the registy the entry is no longer there.

Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks

Well i just check mine and is there; what i notice is that i don't see the difference as far as download speed or distance. is the same as before. on cnet.com i tested before and after and i only get 510kbps. this is if i am right next to the router. has anybody else notice this?

Oh something else that might help is doing a soft reset (2nd method of holding down the power button instead of pushing in the small button on the side with the stylus). Something about it taking time to write that registry edit to the ROM before you reset it. I soft reset my phone by holding down the power button, and it'll ask if you are sure you might lose changes not saved, hit okay, and it should be good. My registry edits are all still there. Now if I could find the one that allows bluetooth file receives, instead of using Registry Tweak.

here:
Enable Bluetooth receive
Registry: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Obex
Key: IsEnabled (dWord)
Value: 1 = enabled
2 = disabled

Posted by: evilninja

My HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Obex IsEnabled is already a value of 1, but I only have 2 available services when connected to my laptop. Inbox and Dial Up Networking. I'm able to tether the laptop to the mda with dial up networking, but how come no other services are showing up? Shouldn't obex file transfer or something like that be an available service?

I think the memory leak is an inherent bug in WM5. When I first got my MDA (no 3rd party software installed), I did a test by opening up a number of the built-in applications and closing it and I noticed the program memory diminishes. For example, before I run ActiveSync, the memory shows 24.9 Mb, after closing it the memory shows 23 Mb.

Is there a way to create my own theme colors for my today screen? The ones that are included kind of suck. Not looking for anything fancy just some different colors. Maybe a registry setting or something?

Some Links:

Roll your own:

Download themes from MS:

thanx man . I appreciate the help.

I hard reseted my MDA again to get rid of all the software I didn't want. Everthing seemed smooth but then the screen wouldn't turn on...I kept tapping the screen and nothing, I hit the power and no go but I kept trying until it worked and it did eventually. Should I be concerned? if this continues (right now its fine) can I return it?

Posted by: djayrage

www.pdagold.com has thousands of free themes as well.

On another note, has anyone tried Battery Pack Pro? it has a really handy feature that deletes your PIE temp files, cookies etc. every hour. It saves a lot of memory.

Posted by: lanwarrior

I use MemMaid. It deletes those things, including dead registry and can be automated to run during start time.

Headset Profiles problem.
I have T-Mobile SDA, whenever I use my bluetooth headset, by default it goes to headset profile, and I can't change it to any other profile. Its quite frustrating, since I want the phone to be on vibrate when I am at work, and ring mode when I am in car or home.
Does any one else has experience this problem? If so, is there a solution to fix thsi?

There is no fix for this and it does suck.

Ohh Man this is really bad,
There is nothing can be done in the Registry to overide it? I'm sure if so many people hates it, there must be somthing someone must have discovered by now.
Also, does any one know when or if T-Mobile will be upgrading this firmware?
There are other bugs in this firmware as well.
Thanks all

Posted by: kdenninger

Not that I've found - and I've looked HARD for a solution to this problem.

Yes, it sucks. Its one of my biggest complaints with the SDA.

Posted by: kamranwpi

Well, it's becoming my big complaint too. I love the phone, internet kicks a$$, WiFi is awesome. But, this thing is making me lose callst when i am in car or home. That's not good.
I may look into i-mate SP5m or QTEK 8300. They are pretty similar to this phone. But, they are heck alot more moeny than this SDA. But, I do want the phone to ring when I want it to ring, and vibrate when I want it to vibrate, not headset profile decide.
I will keep on hunting as well, and if I come across a solution I will post it here.

Posted by: kdenninger

The SP5m is the same phone and has the same issue. Surprise!

It appears to be a WM5 botch.

I just picked this phone up and I like it a lot.

I'm on that Total Internet plan from T-Mobile.

Incoming e-mail is fine while connecting through GPRS but outgoing e-mail through GPRS can't work. What do you folks think is wrong? I have the right incoming and outgoing server settings and outgoing mail goes out fine while connected through WI-FI.

Why can't I send outgoing e-mail through GPRS? Can anyone help? I would greatly appreciate it if someone could.

Thanks!

What email server are you attmepting to send through?

Most have security which prevents this without specific support. There are multiple ways of providing the support for it, but without that, it won't generally work.

Ok This is a rookie question for you guys. Where do I put the my downloaded themes? Dont have a minisd yet so thats not an option, but I would like to know where to put them with and without a minisd.

Nevermind, figured it out myself.

I am using Gmail.

Incoming setting is pop.gmail.com
Outgoing setting is smtp.gmail.com

Even after following the instructions on gmail.com (like enabling POP access through my gmail account), I still ain't having the capability of sending out mail but can only receive.

Look at my post in the MDA FAQ thread, you might have missed a step that is very important when sending email with a Gmail account

BTW.. The answer is the Windows directory. You were not the only one having a hard time figuring this out, so posting the answer seems like a good idea.

Amazing to me that MS continues this dreadful tradition they started 25 years ago of NOT cleaning distinguishing between the operating system and 3rd-party add-ons and mods. This is the kind of sloppy designwork that I would never allow from even my most junior employees.

It would have been SO trivial for them to come up with a meaningful, self-explanatory and well-designed directory structure, perhaps with a different root dir such as "3P" (if they want to save bytes) or "third party" spelled out. Under that would be "themes", "plugins", "ringtones", etc. No need to mess around with the OS (windows) directories at all.

MS started these mindless mixups a long time ago, allowing -- and often encouraging -- developers to drop their DLL's in the Windows dir (or Windows/System32). What a mess, and SO many incompatibilites can be traced to this, with software installers dropping their DLL's on top of other DLL's because they all live in the same place.

Arggghhh..... [/rant off]

Wow. Forgot I had an account on here. Lol... Well I ordered my Mda yesterday 3/9 and should be here by next week friday. I've actualy read thru 80% of this 99 page thread so most of my questions about the device are answered (rare for a new member to do I know. Lol) . I did have 1 question tho and forgive me if was answered and I overlooked it.

Is there a trick or hack or anything to get the mda To connect to like a "thumb drive" or even mini hard drive thru usb for storage?.. Would be cool if there was, or support added for it. Like how they have a hard drive now for the psp which connects thru usb (when previously you could only use the memory card)

There may be something cleaner out there...but if you use ActiveSync, as soon as the first sync is complete, you can "Explore" the MDA from the desktop of your PC -- just like navigating your PC (except that the "refresh" is slower when you move around the directory tree, which is to be expected!).

When exploring the MDA you can look at any of the directories on the device itself and also explore the miniSD card as well. Drag and drop files from another explorer window, etc. Really quick and easy.

Thanks for that. Very useful info. But that's not the question im asking.... My use for it is to use a thumb drive and not a mini sd @ all since I have a 1gb thumb drive already... Also Im a dj and people send me music thru email all the time. I would like to be able to store a lot of that on a drive while im still on the go without havin to dump to a comp often. So hence hookin to aportable hard drive .

Also a seperate but related question. I just realized I have a Video ipod (well I been knew I had it. Lol) but would be cool if that could be used for a hard drive storage also. (In place of a mini sd card)

I just did a quick search -- there apparently ARE programs you can run on WM5 to let your MDA act as a "thumb drive" -- actually "USB Mass Storage". Take a look at this link for a start. Once a few of us check this out, or somebody experienced with these tools weighs in, we should add this item to the MDA FAQ.

I think he's asking if he can use a USB ThumbDrive on the MDA as storage, not turn the MDA into a storage device.

Ooops - looks like you're right. My bad sorry - I usually read questions more closely before answering.

That was a good question. I just spent a few mins searching and haven't found anything yet. But it seems like a natural -- only issue would be that the bottom of the MDA has a mini-USB socket, which is NOT standard for flash drives, so you'd need to use a cable or adapter. But it's an interesting idea.

Posted by: Delta5

It is highly unlikely. I have not read any reviews/white papers of the MDA that discuss it having USB Host functionality. I would think that would be a big deal if it did. There were only a couple of PocketPC's ever made that had the appropriate hardware to be a USB Host; a couple of Toshiba's, I believe.

It would be very cool if the MDA could do it, as (given the appropriate drivers) you would be able to use USB keyboards, printers, mice, hard drives, retrieve pics from your digital camera, etc with it. But again, I do not think the MDA has the right hardware.

Unfortunately I think you're right. I can't find ANYTHING about USB Host capability on the HTC Wizard / IMate K-Jam / etc. Seesm like the upcoming "Loox" (from HTC, for Siemens / Fujitsu) will, indeed, support USB Host, but that doesn't do most of us any good...

Posted by: djfantom

Thank you guys for the responses. Yes that was what im trying to do use a "thumb drive" as storage Not turn the Mda into a storage Device.

Ok so I see it wouldn't be possible because of hardware limitations. Too bad. Woulda been cool to have a mini hard drive filled with movies and music and apps... Wouldn't need my video ipod anymore.

Posted by: Combat Wombat

OK, so I just got my MDA last night, and was all prepared to tweak it just to my liking.... then I realized, how the heck do you access the registry? Man, I feel like a total noob; this is my first PocketPC device, so yea. I've tried searching, and can't find a thing.

Oh, and I accept full responsibility for "bricking" my phone, if it happens. I might be a PPC noob, but I've been tweaking other things for a while now, and am pretty comfortable with it.

Congrats on the MDA! Even if you're new to PPC, if you're comfortable tweaking Windows, you'll learn this pretty quickly -- and if you're willing to tweak it, there's a lot these devices can do.

Take a look at the first few posts in the MDA FAQ -- it's the first thread in this sub-forum -- "stickied" so that it stays at the top of the list. You'll see LOTS of good info and suggestions about tools like registry editors, utility programs, hacks, skins, "Today" plugins, etc. Definitely worth the read.

There are free registry editors out there, and some that cost a bit. I'm using "Resco Registry" -- very solid editor, and you can download and try a trial version before deciding if you want to buy it. (Google Search will get you to there site quickly).

Re: registry edits: after you make a change and "ok" your way out of the editor, WM5 takes a while before writing the changes to non-volatile memory. What you should do after a change is use the power button (top right of the device) to force a soft reset -- hold down the button for a few secs until you see a popup warning that data will be lost when you shut down. Tell it to go ahead -- this process actually forces the changes to be written and stored. The MDA will shut down quickly -- then you fire it up again.

A HA! Thank you, very helpful. I downloaded "Registry Wizard 1.0L" from xda-devs, assuming that it would allow me to access the registry. Maybe it does, but I never found the ability, just the preset options. I'll try Resco.

Off to the tweaking...

Registry Wizard is convenient, because it has 3 pages of specific registry changes to address very specific issues. You simply check the tweaks you want and tell it to go ahead, and those specific changes are made. But it is NOT a general purpose registry editor - just a really convenient way to turn on/off a bunch of excellent tweaks that many users find useful.

Use the 'File Explorer' to browse your MiniSD and locate the .cab and simply execute it.

can someone tell me how to disable the startup / shutdown sounds on the SDA? I did a search and it pointed me to this thread, however, there is no search within a thread option - since there are over 1,400 replies, going through each of them isn't an option.

Thanks!

Does anyone know howa to set up a QTEK 9100 for tmobiles picture messaging??? I check their site that sends the setting via text message and it only shows the SDA...

Posted by: kdenninger

Grab the two files that have "MMS" in them from the Xda-developers site in the T-Mobile extended ROM and run both.

That SHOULD do it.

If it doesn't though you may have to hard reset

maybe i'm missing something here, but can someone tell me how to move all my contacts from my sim card over to the phone memory so i can add more contact details to it? thanks.

Posted by: i3onk

Unfortunatly the best you can do is enter them into your outlook and then sync them with you phone. Thats what I had to do with mine. then I deleted the contacts in my sim.

Start->Programs->Sim Manager

Select contacts you want, use the tools (right button) to copy to contacts...

Then sync and it will be picked up by Outlook.

Ahh, you installed the XDA Registry Wizard. You need to set the "Taskbar Date/Time" option on the "Tweaks 2" page to something other than "Nothing". "Clock" should be the default, but for some reason "Nothing" is.

Posted by: The Trooper

alabij and lokimon thanks that worked...never had it occured to me that the Registry Wizard was causing that little problem.

I uninstalled all that software I had in the Today screen to see if that was affecting it Now I have to reinstall

Posted by: kdenninger

Or just uncheck the box next to the "nothing".

This procedure for setting up MMS does *not* work for me. (I'm using a T-Mobile MDA.) The new connection simply does not appear in the servers tab under "MMS Configuration".

OK Folks I have a major problem. I just installed aebplus to do some button customization with my device. There was an error writing to a file when I saved the remappings and I did a soft reset. My phone will not power all the way up to the today screen. It stay locked up at the tmobile screen and i cant get it to go any further than that. Is there anyways to to a hard restart without getting the device to turn all the way on? what can I do to get this this reset to default factory settings again so I can start over?

Best AV protection for your MDA should be the same virus protection you use when hitting the clubs. Don't hit on skanks. In other words, don't run stupid **** and you won't have a problem.

No. The MDA is not a USB Host.

Your best bet is to get a 2g mini sd card + mini sd thumb drive. Looks like a thumb drive but you slide the mini sd card in and out. Ebay your 1giger.

I actually got the answer from the xda-developers forums.
If you hold the comms button and the voice record button while soft resetting the MDA you keep both buttons held and then you get a prompt to reset to defaults. You hit the green send button and voila, you have a hard reset. Everything went back to defaults and I had fun for the day reinstalling everything LMAO.

I think the problem was, that I was using the beta version of aebutton. I went to the last non beta version and installed that and it works fantastic. I noticed one option on the beta that I liked and that was to be able to set a button press to go to vibrate mode (I switch back and forth alot at work).
Guess I will wait for the beta to go to full release and get that one. Its definatly better than smartskey though. many more options and is actually closes an app instead of just hiding it.

Another option you could have is to get yourself a bluetooth usb adapter. Connect that to a PC and you can transfer files to and from your MDA. I agree with ilrosewood though. That would be your best option. Im just waiting for Fry's to get their next shipment of 2g minisd's in on april 7th and Im hookin that up. Got a 256 to tide me over until then though lol. When I get the 2g Ill give the 256 to my daughter for her LG

Guess I will wait for the beta to go to full release and get that one. Its definatly better than smartskey though. many more options and is actually closes an app instead of just hiding it.

Holding the comm button switches the phone to vibrate and vice versa.
Magic button is escllent for task switching and closing apps

There's a registry hack for that in the forums somewhere.

Works great!

What are the labels for the buttons on the MDA, i.e. which is button 1, etc. ?

Has anyone found a way to run Java on there MDA yet? Are there any ROM's that allow you to run any Java machines?

Take a look at the stickied MDA FAQ at the top of this forum. You'll find directions for a couple of options. You CAN replace the ROM if you know what you're doing and your careful about it (make sure you back up your old one first!). You can also simply at the IBM J9 MIDP 2.0 version 5.7.2 java midlet manager (runtime). Details also in the FAQ. The J9 works just fine on the MDA.

Ok got another question. Is there a reg setting so I can shut off these damn connecting to gprs warnings. I'm really getting sick of seeing that thing popup on me.

Also, is there one that might let me add some more space for the quicknotes(preformatted text responses) for text messages? I think there is only like 10 spots on there now and would love to be able too add at least another 10 or so.

As far as I can tell, "my" MDA ONLY has the following buttons (OTHER than soft keys):

button 3: camera
button 4: voice command
button 5: comm button

WHERE are buttons 1 & 2?

BTW, can we use AE Button Plus to "add functions" to the on/off button?

buttons 1 & 2 are on the top front of the phone just under the ear hole with the blinking led's. the left one is button 1 (messaging) and the right is button 2 (internet explorer)

as far as remapping the power button, not that I know of. long press powers is off and single press puts the screen in sleep mode.

OH YEAH...I knew that!

I just "forgot" because I "never" use those buttons BUT I will NOW that I've "discovered" AE Button Plus. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention!

there are a few. The two that I have seen talked about the most are smartskey and aebutton. smartskey actually has preassigned mappings for those buttons. Aebutton on the otherhand, lets you actually map those buttons as well as the others to different actions and functions.

Have a quick question. is there a way to get the phone to ring and vibrate at the same time for phonecalls and possibly for email/txt msg notifications?

Start / Settings / Personal / Sounds & Notifications / Notifications (tab) ...

Then, click the drop-down and select the event you're interested in, such as "incoming email" or "incoming phone call".

The user interface is a bit inconsistent - on some items, you'll immediately see the option to specify a sound file, turn on vibrate, and possibly flash the lights as well. For incoming calls, when you click on "Ring type", you'll have choices like: Ring, Increasing Ring, Ring Once, Vibrate, Vibrate and Ring, Vibrate then Ring, or None.

You have a LOT of choices!

Why is my phone soooooo slow without any programs running in the background? I've loaded a weather app to my today screen. And a registry editor. And a quick launch. And TCPMP. That's it though. It takes about 20 seconds for the screen to re-draw itself. I think it's new ROM time.

I think that's because ActiveSync is running in the backgroun and it like to start by itself. Go to my thread and download my hacks list.

Log on to my.t-mobile.com and click on where it says, "Change my phone's email address". It will be somewhere on the right. I think it's under the Communications tab.

You can actually setup gmail with t-mobile and access it as a pop3 mail account.

when you log into t-mobile.com go down to the bottom left of the screen and go to web & applications. On the next page click send/recieve email. On the next page click start now. Under setting click mailboxes and then add new mailbox. From there you enter in your gmail address and your PW and then follow the rest of the steps.
Once that is done, use your MDA today screen to setup a new email account. Have it detect your accounts and you are on your way.
If you dont have the email tab on your today screen, start>setting>today>items. Check tmobile my email and then close it out. click on the setup email then download settings for exhisting email accounts. It will detect your gmail accoutn and set it up on your phone. BAM yer done. Enjoy. No need to forward, no need to setup yet another of what I am sure is MANY email accounts.

It does work because I just set it up and sent myself a test email. I currently have 4 setup on my MDA a couple from my cable provider, gmail and AIM mail. and of course you can get your hotmail through pocket msn.
That is about as detailed as I could get, hope it helped.

If you want to setup gmail to work with your outlook or outlook express, check this link.

Well after posting this I realise I didn't read your post entirely, or I would have noticed you just didnt feel like setting up the pop account. Although, the method I just stated, even though it seasm long and tedious, is probably easier then setting up a tmomail account and forwarding gmail to it.

The only problem with this method is that T-Mobile uses silent triggers. Every email that automatically gets pushed to your phone, counts as an SMS.

I dont believe that it is pushed though. I think( not positive) that the phone checkes the email every 30 or so minutes...I think. and then informs you of when you have email. I know that with email i have gotten i dont get it right away. I either have to send/recieve or wait until i get a notification on my MDA. I know you can use it as a push service if you want to leave your PC on and have it push it through, but that doesnt have to be done.

On another note though. I just got google local to finally work on my MDA (that is great). The problem is I realised afterwards that my touchscreen keyboard now has a different layout. Its not the standard english layout. It is all crazy now. the shift key says áü. and uses all of those symbols. I dont know how it got like this. I dont think it was the IBM java or the google local .jad file that did this. Anyone know how, why or a way to get it back to the way it was.

While Im on off topics, I posted before asking if anyone knew a way to turn off the connecting to GPRS popup. Anyone know the answer to either of these?

Yee Ha!

NETWORK TIME UPDATE -> HLKM->SOFTWARE->OEM->PhoneSetting

Set "ShowTimeZonePage" to "1"

You can also set "ShowPIN2Page" to "0", since T-Mobile doesn't support PIN2 functions (call barring, etc)

Once this is set, and you have power-cycled, when you go into Settings->Phone you will see a new tab - "Time Zones". Go there and you'll see "Automatic change time zone and clock". Check it and voila - your time updates from the network.

I've been looking for this one for a LOOONG time. Just stumbled upon it....

This is one that T-Mobile has no excuse for NOT including, as most of the other devices support this out of the box!

You should let the guys on XDA-Developers know about this so they can update the Registry Wizard with it...

Good catch!

Posted by: wendo

I haven't been able to get the Time Zones tab. Could you post a more detailed process? I can only assume I'm doing something wrong. Thanks.

Posted by: jonazen

Not working for me either. I have the shipping version of the ROM, and there IS no value there to set to 1 in the registry in the tree that kdenninger described. I tried adding it and rebooting, but still no joy.

I suspect the availability of this option has to do with other changes in the ROM version that kdenninger is using that may NOT be available in the shipping TMo ROM.

For example: "timewizard.exe" is apparently used by the phone -- at least in the shipping version of the ROM -- to grab the time from NIST ntp servers. Is that still the way they do it in the version that you (kdenninger) are using? (search registry for "timewizard" to see this).

Posted by: i3onk

well a soft reset took care of the keyboard problem. thank the gods. that was pretty crazy looking layout lol

Posted by: kdenninger

Shiesle. This may be missing from the T-Mo ROM - it definitely works with the IMATE one.

Well, now you have a reason to ditch the factory load

Has any one tried the hack for voice command & their bluetooth headset successfully? I get it to work but have to play games to keep it working. My old h6315 ppc WM 2003 did this beatifully! Now my wife uses it and I got screwed. Why this does not work o WM 5 is beyond me.

Also u said u use Twick2k2. There is a feature to enable bluetooth headset, but not available on the MDA?

Posted by: snoslicer8

There is a registry tweak in the mda faq by kdenninger that disables the "gprs disconnect on end" problem...maybe that will help with the autodisconnect.

I don't have any problems using my bluetooth earpiece for my voice commands. it works for my contacts and the programs that I have voice tags for.

Works beautifully for me. The ONLY issue is the known one where it won't drop the BT connection automatically at the end of every call. So the second time you try to initiate a call via BT by tapping your BT connect button on the headset, Voice Command doesn't necessarily respond. It essentially requires one extra tap at the end of a call to totally "dismiss" voice command from the connection so that it will respond the next time you call it up.

That being said - it took all of a day to get totally used to this, and now I use Voice Command via BT on my MDA to do SO much -- dial by name, dial by number, check the time ("What time is it?") or date ("What is the date?"), check my calendar, check for missed calls, etc. I also have PocketZenPhone installed and tweaked so that I can use Voice Command to effortlessly change phone profiles (e.g., "Silent", "Home", "Office", "Car (with BT)", "FlightMode"). Works SO well!

Worth the time to get it figured out...

OK i have a question I hope someone has an answer to. How do I go about making icons for a WM5 device? I am using SBP pocket plus. I created a tab for all my web favorites that I go to daily (HOFO being a couple of them) and want to make my own icons for each webpage that I have on the tab.

I was using the Motorola HS850 for a while. Worked pretty good. I had some issues with the bluetooth cutting out even when i was like 2 feet from the phone. I think that was a phone issue though. Since I got my MDA I gave my old Motorola A630 to my girlfriend, I gave her my HS850 as well. I now use the HS700 and it works equally as well. One problem I have found with both headsets is that when I am "Outside" and my phone and earpiece are not within line of site of each other I get some static. When I am indoors however, I have no problems and the earpiece works fantastic. The HS850 volume wasnt quite as high as I would have liked it, but the HS700 is much better.
If anyone has a headset that doesnt have the static issue let us know, I just got my HS700 a week ago, but I am more than willing to give it to my daughter for her LG and get myself a new one.

Totally off-topic...I saw somewhere you were having problems with TomTom GPS software. I am trying to decide between IGuidance and OnCourse, and good reviews of these things are hard to find. Any thoughts?

I am a believer.

This brick was moments away from being shipped back before it turned to gold.

I have spent probably about 14 man hours and every different comination of settings could be found on hofo in order to get html internet and e-mail to work over GPRS on the MDA with the 9.99 T-zones plan. Then... finally... out of the blue. it benigs to work. god knows how or why but it does.

I had begun to doubt that it was still feasable becuase there was some chatter about t-mobile shutting down the 8080 proxy as of 3-13-06. But lo! here it is the 19th and we are up and running.

Also... it is noteworthy that I am in Sussex County New Jersey.... where the russians could not jam a radio signal better than t-mobile manages to do so.

Speaking of RF reception.. some folks were asking about how the MDA stacks up RF wise. Having sent 4 phones back for poor RF I can safley speak with authority on the topic. First. Please don't reply and say that all phones are the same like t-moble customer services does. It irks me when i call them and they say "well you are in a bad area ... YOU WONT GET SERVICE...." even after i tell them that i have service on two other t-mobile phones in the same spot. anyway.... i digress.

best reception
motorolla v300
MDA
motorolla v600
motorolla A630
RIM 7100t
RIM 7290
worst reception

In any event. the MDA works well enough when sitting on the window sill in my office that it rings. And thats all i need... becuase then at least it will forward a call to another number instead of t-mobile's "unavailable solution" which amounts to a message saying in not so many words ... "Mike is no longer in buisness. Just call then next guy in the phone book becuase Mike is too cheap to pay for service that works." So long as i can avoid that ... we're good.

im pretty sure im keeping it now.

Is there a way to back up your settings?? There is no way im going through that again.

I've got a Moto HS850. Seems to work fine with this...but I'm keeping an eye out for other ones. The rubber surround that cushions it against your ear (which they say is "removable") tore, and I had to remove it completely. I wrote to Moto for a replacement, and the only reply was that if it was still under warranty they would replace the unit (of course it wasn't) -- no replacement parts. Disappointing, but I've been using the headset without the rubber piece for now.

Anyway - I do NOT like the power plug that Moto uses -- very poor design, and you have to jiggle it to get a positive connection. I also had a first-generation Jabra BT headset from 3 years ago -- excellent sound and battery life -- just found it too bulky and uncomfortable behind my ear. BUT...I still feel that the moto headset doesn't perform quite as well or sound quite as good. So I'm still on the fence about BT headsets -- need to research this subject a bit more.

Let me understand this, cause this is driving me bunkers. You use Voice Command and hacked the rgistry with regedit, or tweak2k2, which changed the command "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\Path". from default "\Windows\SDDialer.exe" to "\Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe". And now you are able to activate Micrsoft Voice Command by pressing the connect button on your bluetooth headset?

I can't activate Voice Command by pressing my connection on the bluetooth headset. I can however, get VC to work on my bluetooth headset, by pressing the hot button on my MDA, but it takes nothing less than a miracles to keep it consistantly working over the bluetooth, VC stops using headset, I gave up trying.

I have no issues using the hot button assigned to Voice command on MDA, but I didn't need a hack for this. I have no issues with pressing connect button on my bluetooth for Voice Tags to respond, but preferr not to use Voice Tags, that's why I hacked the registry.

So the hack above has been successful for you? You can press connect on your bluetooth headset and bring up voicemail? Or you can consistantly get voice mail using your bluetooth for commands? Not talking about Voice Tags?

If yes, thats interesting! I need to know cause maybe it's my h700 Motorola?
What bluetooth headset do you use?

Thanks

I use the built in voice command with my Motorola H700 with no problems. I have no hacks applied.

Not at this point, no. I haven't played with either of those. One of the problems is that like with most software you end up having to buy to try. That blows and is bound to promote piracy of one kind or another.....

I have figured some of the TomTom issues out. The remaining one is that their maps (and ESPECIALLY their POI databases) are somewhat out-of-date. A number of places that I know have been where they are now for 5+ years simply aren't in their lists.

TomTom's customer service is worse than useless. I filed a ticket on the install problems several days ago. No response of any kind. Nice.

Note that "On Course" claims that you have to install to main memory, and they want a LOT of it. This is likely a show-stopper.

Good evening Guys,

Does any of you bright people know the registry hack to activate the repeat checkbox in the notifications box in sounds & Notifications. I would love my phone to keep on beeping me when i get a voicemail until I clear it. I see that the checkbox is there BUT it is grayed out!!

Are u in the HK? Cause this BT Connection thing is foreign to me. So you are using Voice Command successfully on your Bluetooth Headset with this.. what you call... broadband BT Connection? Can u eleborate what this is about.

The guy you quoted responded to my question which was, I cannot get VC by pressing the connect button on my bluetooth headset, after using the hack for voice command. I have no issues using VC on my MDA itself, but surely do not need a hack for that. I can get VC to work over bluetooth headset with hack, but have to press hot button on MDA to initiate VC on bluetooth headseet, but even this stops after a call, or after brief idle time. Once I try again, it comes from the MDA not my headset.

Posted by: g_bruin

What is the triangle next to the EDGE icon on the top toolbar for? I did a hard reset and then a soft reset before the MDA loaded up the T-mobile customizations and now there is this triangle that I can't get rid of.

Thanks.

Hi - I'm in the US - near Princeton, NJ.

Anyway - yes - using Voice Command with Darryl Burling's "Voice Enable" hack - here's his own website and article about it:
http://www.burling.co.nz/Default.aspx?tabid=151

First I installed MS Voice Command, then I installed Darryl's "Voice Enable" and it's been working fine since then, with the connect button on my BT headset invoking Voice Command on the MDA (of course Bluetooth on the MDA has to be turned on at the MDA, and the MDA and headset paired) - you do NOT have to initiate the connection via the phones connect button.

Same here. i just use the built in as well. You can put voice tags on any contact or any program. All I do is push the connect button on my 700 and speak the tag for what I need. Works great. There are times (ie....if its really noisy around me or if there is alot fo noise when you record the tags, ) that you might not get the proper response. Too noisy around you? Speak louder. Noise in the voice tag? Playback after recording the tag. If its clear you are good to go.
I always have my MDA bluetooth powered on so all I have to do is pull the 700 out of my pocket, open the flip and hit the button.

The HS700 uses miniusb for charging. I guess they realised that their old connector sucked.

I think a lot of people are confusing generic voice command software with Microsoft Voice Command; this is the app that works with the registry hack.

...if I might expand on that a bit:

- the built in software, for which you must train "voice tags", works fine out of the box with BT.

- MS Voice Command, which you must purchase, download and install separately, does not - by default - work with BT headsets attempting to initiate the call. THIS is the program for which Darryl Burling's "voice enable" hack is intended - after which a BT headset CAN iniitate the conversation with the phone and invoke MS Voice Command.

That's good to know. I'm really amazed at how BAD the old connector is. You can get it to work - but it's really lucky that the blue light appears when the connection is good - that's the ONLY way I can be sure that I've wiggled the connector properly into place. Moto used to be a truly first-class engineering firm. Something like that never would have left the factory 20 years ago...

I meant Microsoft Voice Command. And the hack for the most part does not work, not with my MDA. I dont need a hack to get MS VC to work on the MDA it works fine. I am talking about pressing ur connect button on ur bluetooth . It randomly works on bluetooth by pressing an assigned button on ur device, but even that stops working. I believe this comes from Microsoft not supporting MS VC with bluetooth on WM 5.0 devices. This is well documented on internet news boards. So it was nice to find a hack for this feature, which should have never been left out by MS period, cause it makes no sense, since it works on WM03 beautifully. So if any one gets this hack working on a Qtek 9100, K-Jam, HTC Wizard or the MDA Vario doing exactly as i described , by pressing ur bluetooth connect button or hot button, pls i would like to know ur setup. P.S. Any head set I plug into device would easily hesr MS VC cause it is a phisical connection to PPC & that's not the issue, its with bluetooth. Thanks

My problem wasn't with the charging of my hs850, mine was with my MOtorola A630. I had many a day when my phone just wouldnt get fully cahrged because while i was asleep either I or the cat tapped the wire and it came out just enough to stop the charging. I had the issues a couple of times with my 850 but not as much as the phone.

I hear you...and I know that a few people seem to have trouble using MS Voice Command over BT even with the bluetooth hack. But...if you read the threads in here on that, and also search other forums, you'll find that a number of people DO find that it works, with just a minor compromise. More detail:

- After installing MS Voice Command and the so-called "bluetooth hack" (most easily accomplished by installing Darryl Burling's "Voice Enable" cab), the first time you click the connect button on your BT headset, it WILL invoke Voice Command, and you WILL be able to use the "speaker independent voice dialing" capabilities it offers with no problem.

- What many are noticing is that, after this first call is over, the phone doesn't seem to respond to the second attempt to initiate a call by clicking the connect button on your BT headset.

What seems to be happening is that the combo of Voice Command and BT doesn't properly reset to the "waiting" after a call is finished. HOWEVER...in the experience of many of us, simply tapping the BT headset connect button one extra time after a call has ended seems to reset the "waiting" status properly. After doing this, I have no trouble initiating a connection to the phone and Voice Command once again by tapping my BT connect button.

This works so consistently and so well, in fact, that I can leave my MDA in its belt case while I drive, wearing my BT headset, and make any number of calls while driving - all initiated via the BT headset connect button, and all "dialed" with the aid of MS Voice Command.

I'm using the standard ROM that came with the MDA from T-Mobile. The only tweaks or hacks I've made that affect BT and voice dialing are to install MS Voice Command, install Darryl Burling's Voice Enable cab and one more thing (more to save program memory - but perhaps it will help in problematic cases?) - I removed the item "sddaemon" from my WM5 startup list. That last is the entry that invokes a "watcher" program for the built-in voice dialing facility that comes standard with WM5 -- limited to trained voice tags only. Since I use Voice Command, it's better to disable the built-in facility - no reason to have an extra program loaded into program memory when it's scarce to begin with, and it minimizes the chance for any conflicts. Maybe you should try this as well?

Anyway - the ONLY issue I have with BT and Voice Command is the need to tap "connect" one extra time after a call is over to "prepare" the system for the next call I may want to initiate from the headset. Aside from that, it works almost perfectly.

Just seems like an unreliable design - might work sometimes, might fail others. Probably works better with the headset because it's so lightweight - the A630 is heavy enough to stay put if the power cord moves a bit (as they might tend to do if the bends in the cord insulation "relax" and straighten out a bit overnight) - and if the cord moves and the phone stays put, I can imagine the plug/phone alignment moving out of that ideal "connected" state. Too unreliable! Bad, bad design!

Happy to see them move to something more standard like mini-USB. Although I was really impressed with the design of the power cord on my Sony Ericsson Z600 -- positive click/snap in -- won't pull it, yet it pops out in a second when you tilt it -- and it ALWAYS get a positive connection, immediately. Far better design than the old Moto plug.

TomTom's customer service is worse than useless. I filed a ticket on the install problems several days ago. No response of any kind. Nice.

Note that "On Course" claims that you have to install to main memory, and they want a LOT of it. This is likely a show-stopper.

I have the same complaints about TomTom (old maps and lack of customer service). It was trying to redirect me around a road that completed construction more than 3 years ago this past weekend. On another note, on their website it says that they do not support traffic updates in the US yet, but I turned the traffic feature on and I do receive traffic updates here in Chicago, IL.

Well, I feel totally robbed by the TomTom guys - to the point that there's no way I'm giving any software company a second shot at me unless they have a FULLY FUNCTIONAL package I can either demo or return.

The map issue is huge and the other guys out there all seem to think that you ought to basically buy the product again annually to get the updates. Uh, no.

http://www.burling.co.nz/Default.aspx?tabid=151

First I installed MS Voice Command, then I installed Darryl's "Voice Enable" and it's been working fine since then, with the connect button on my BT headset invoking Voice Command on the MDA (of course Bluetooth on the MDA has to be turned on at the MDA, and the MDA and headset paired) - you do NOT have to initiate the connection via the phones connect button.

I have installed MS Voice Command long time ago. I don't know if this .cab file will work, but surely will try it. Maybe there is some hack in his .cab file that is different from just changing the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\Windows\SDDialer.e xe to "\Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe". This is the hack that is going around the Internet to get WM 5.0 and MS Voicecommand to work on the bluetooth headset.

While were on this subject. On my older h6315 WM 2003, there was a neat little feature in Comm Mgr/bluetooth settings. You highlighted the paired device, and opened up an "options window" with several options, one of them called "hand-free settings". In this settings you can enable or disable "Telephone Calls" & "Standard audio" (it says, "use the default hands-free device, when available, to play music, sounds, notifications, and other non telephone related audio generated by the device). A great great feature! You can be at a dental office, or on a plane, and get sounds over bluetooth while playing your games.

I don't see this on the MDA Vario and believe most of the sound issues with bluetooth on WM 5.0 come from not having this feature available! Is this on your K-Jam? If not, maybe it's by default on these newer devices?
Yet I can't get sounds over my bluetooth headset on the MDA Vario, like games, notifications, etc. Can you?

Can you get sounds like games, notifications on your BT Bluetooth headset? Cause when I go to bluetooth settings on the MDA Vario's comm manager, I only get 3 possibilities, edit, delete, set as hands free. You can set as hands free, but there is NO preferences like in the WM 2003 OS.

UPdate: I tried Voice Command with Darryl Burling's cab file, and it did just what I suspected, it changed the command in registry, just like hack above, or what tweak2k2 does, and I got MS Voicecommand to work one time on bluetooth headset. I pressed the connect button twice on my bluetooth headset, and saw the MS Voicecommand mic icon pop up. This is my delema. Once I tell MS Voicecommand to call, or dial, it does one time, then this feature stops working. It's not consistent. My frustration continues. I don't know if it's the MDA Vario, or my h700 Motorola bluetooth.

The crazy fact is, I went back to default "Voice Tag", and "Voice Tag works beatifully on the connect button of bluetooth headset. Almost as if T-Mobile purposely did this with the MDA Vario?

What BT bluetooth headset are u using?
Thanks

I haven't tried listening to music via BT yet. Maybe I'll give it a try tomorrow if I get a chance. I recall hearing about another hack related to keeping the BT audio channel open...although I haven't experimented with that yet. Not sure about the details on that one.

My headset is a Motorola HS850. Since reading your post, I was out today, and experimented a few times with BT and Voice Command just to verify that it was consistent - and it was. If I tap on extra time at the END of a call, it will disconnect, so that the next time I tap, it will invoke MS Voice Command again and let me initiate a new call.

I understand your frustration - this is an important feature for me, and having real, working speaker independent voice dialing is great. I've voice tags on my old SE Z600 for the last 3 years, and I've been looking forward to moving to this. Glad it's working...although I can't understand why it's not working for you!

I am greatful to ur posts cause it's helping me to trouble shoot this device, now that I now it works for you so sweet. Your right, on my h6315 it works flawlessy too. I tried a few experiments tonight on the MDA, I know I can get it to work, if I soft reset device. I can click only once on my bluetooth connect, and It seems to works great! So while I got it working on a soft reset, I went to my games to play shanghai, and wam, music and sounds, I even tried SkyForce, my favorite, and I got sound on bluetooth. So at least If have solved one delema, to play sounds in places of privacy, I can soft reset and use my software, even media worked, although not stereo ofcourse. It's weird, but the feature just seems to go away after a call, or after a while of not using it. I can't figure out how to get it back once it's gone, except to soft reset, which is absolutely no good when driving around. You should not have any issue getting sound on bluetooth. I am wondering if it's not my H700 Motorola. I am somehow going to try out a different bluetooth.

As far as Voice Tags go, it works nicely, but frankly is sucks too. For example, if your driving around, and if Voice Speed Dial does not recognize your voice tag, many times it sits there waiting for you to cancel on screen. This can be frustrating too. Also it will not call any number without a voice tag. So if your driving around, and need to just call someone, any number , say you wrote down on a paper, or a number on a spreadsheet, you can't use voice Speed Dial, cause there is no voice tag associated. Believe me MS Voicecommand is so much more convenient. I use a spreadsheet sometimes with numbers that I don't frequently call, it's nice to come to a stop light, pull out the spreadsheet, and simply just say, "dial 555.2344" using MS Voicecommand.

Your right, MS Voicecommand has become part of my life with these devices, i got to get down to the problem on this.

Posted by: i3onk

WOW! I didnt realise that MS voice command actually let you say numbers and such too. I may need to look into that. As far as the voice tag sitting waiting for you to cancle, it does go away after a few seconds and then you can simply hit the button on your earpiece and try again.

That's true, but u and I are having different experiences with both MS Voicecommand, and Voice Speed Dial. Yes what you said is true, but sometimes for me it just sits there waiting for me to cancel, so driving around with this bothersome thing is a hassle.

Well I tried a little experiment last night. I soft reset device got MS Voicecommand working via bluetooth headset. I simply cannot get MSVC to work using the connect button on my bluetooth. I have but it seems a rare feature for me. But I can feel the connection open between device and headset. So I executed different games, music, and all worked nicely with bluetooth. I then went to sleep and left the bluetooth on next to PPC all night charging. This morning early, I noticed all features were still working . So my problem comes down to making a call. That was always my delema, but never tried to see if music and sounds stay on before making calls. If I make a call using MS Voicecommand, after call, it seems to turn call off, but it also stops working with bluetooth. It is defenetely phone related, cause I bet I can keep it on all day, just giving it commands to access things like Media, Games, any sounds, and it will work. But for making calls MSVC only wants to work on bluetooth using the assigned button on device. What can I say. Over all I can take some control with MSVC.

I tell you MS Voicecommand is the best in the market, bottom line, as long as u have a voice it likes to recognize, or can learn. You have flexibility with MSVC that you can't with Voice Tags. Besides where to all those Voice Tags go, on your SDCard? Or ROM? Anyway, if you were to actually program your device to do what MSVC can do, using Voice Tags, you would probably take up a heck of a lot of storage.

Have a good day today my friend.

Question for you - on your MDA, if you open your bluetooth connection and check the partnership settings, what you do see? -

Start / Settings / Connections / Bluetooth

...then click on the "partnership" for your phone in the Bluetooth page. You should see a page entitled, "Partnership Settings", where you can check the "services to use from this device".

Oddly enough, mine is showing both "hands free" and "serial port" - and I must have checked both when I paird the headset with the phone, although I can't imagine why it shows "serial port" for a bt headset as a service! On the other hand, when I used to pair this exact same headset (HS850) with my SE Z600, it showed "hands free" and "headset" services being offered by the HS850 - both of which I selected for the pairing options.

I wonder if, in the case of WM5 and this unit, it helps to have both services checked? Perhaps "serial port" in this case isn't really "serial port", but in fact provides the "headset" bt profile for the connection...? This is all pure speculation, and despite knowing a lot about computers and software in general, I've only used BT as a consumer -- once my devices pair properly (keyboard and mouse with my pc, and headset with my phone), I'm done and don't worry about the details.

Check it out - I vaguely remember that when I first paired the headset with the phone, only the hands free service was checked by default. If that's the case, try checking any other offered services, make sure to SAVE the updated settings. I don't know if it matters, but having lived with Windows in all its flavors for 25 years, I'd even do a soft reset after that, using the power switch method to make sure your new BT settings are actually saved before shutdown, just in case the settings dialog only writes them to a cache initially -- hold down the power switch until you're warned that you might lose data, then click to continue and restart the phone after it shuts down.

The phone WILL switch automatically -- but the registry in the standard T-Mobile firmware load is set to simply not show you any difference between standard GPRS and full EDGE connections. It's only a display issue and does NOT affect your phone's ability to provide EDGE speeds. The only reason people are looking for ways to modify the registry for the "EDGE hack" is so they can see a visual indication of what the phone is doing automatically anyway. Now, by default, your phone DOES switch to full EDGE speeds when your local network makes it possible - you just don't have any indication that this has happened. If you made the registry change, the "G" would change to an "E" whenever you were in an area that supported full EDGE speeds, and the connected version of the indicator (the little "G" with arrows) would change to a litte "E" with arrows as well.

Just a visual thing. Some, like me, like knowing when we're actually in an EDGE area and when we're not. I've learned, for instance, that I do NOT get anything beyond standard GPRS at home - but in most other areas around central NJ, I AM getting an EDGE connection.

If you're comfortable editing your registry, there are freeware registry editors, as well as very polished commercial products that are still pretty cheap ($10 or less) to do the same -- but if you've never edited the registry before, know that you can, while mucking in the guts of this massive settings database, potentially mess things up pretty badly. It's always recoverable, in that you can always do a hard reset -- but then you'd lose all your data, settings, installed software, etc. Not the end of the world, but it should give you pause if you're not comfortable with the process in advance.

An alternative, if you want the "E" display, is to find a tool such as the "Registry Wizard", available free from the good folks at xda-developer.com (go there and search for "registry wizard", or browse the FAQ in the beginning of the FAQ thread here - I think there's a mention of it there). The wizard is a very convenient way to flip several "tweak" options on and off, from the default value to the "enhanced" value, without having to know how to edit the registry by hand.

I think there are other tools out there that will do pretty much the same thing, such as Tweaks2k (? not sure of name, but as I recall, it offers MANY settings options, but you have to pay for this tool - something like $10 or $15).

So - in a nutshell:
- you don't have to DO anything to get EDGE speeds, you just won't necessarily know when it's happening, but it's fully automatic now

- if you like editing the registry by hand, just search around for "EDGE hack" and also check the MDA/SDA Faq - you should find info there.

- if you want to make the change, but don't want to edit the registry by hand, there are tools out there (both free and otherwise) that will do it for you.

thanks, great reply

I used both Tweaks2k2 and Resco Registry editor to get my MDA configured to my liking.
Tweaks2k2 can be found at www.tweaks2k2.com and is free to try (3 tries). I used it twice to enable the settings I wanted and then deleted the app.
The registry edits I did with Resco I simply found here in the FAQ.

Yeah, you are getting the same settings I am. I have been there an enabled and dissabled the options, as well as BT headset paired as hands free. I have not, however, enabled serial port . As an IT guy u should find article interesting below from Windows Mobile Team Blog.

Man it pays to do some research! Get this unique utility. I can't get the Motorola H700 to work like ur HS850 connect button, but I found the next best thing. I found a utility called BT Audio. It's a zip file with three tiny files, BT AudionON, BT AudionOFF, and BT toggle. This works really good for sound and notifications on ur MDA, even if you did not have MVC installed, if ur MVC stops working, like mine after a call, it's a blessings, cause I don't have to soft reset. When I click on the BT AudioOn MSVC comes back again. Now if I can assign a button to this little utility, after a call, press that button for BT AudioON, then the button for MSVC, Im in business while driving. Better yet, is it possible to create a batch files on a PPC? Than I would assign only one button to the batch file, which would execute BT AudionOn, and the VoiceCMD.exe. Getting closer to success!

Well you cold use AEbutton and assign for example...double press of the right soft key to turn on BT audio and a triple press to MSVC then you could easily handle it. I have been using the AEbutton for a couple weeks now. I love it. The single press doesnt work as fast as it used to without it, but a second or two delay for having SOOOO many options for button remapping is totally worth it.

Excellent find! Don't know about batch files...but I know you can create a link file ".lnk" that is effectively a "shortcut" - can invoke an exe in a defined path with arguments, and I can imagine that you can create an icon for it as well. Have to read up on this...

This little file BT AudioON.exe saved me. Thanks to PPCs and the fun of messing with them. This is a bandade sort of fix but it works beautifully. As u know a few of us have the problem that MVC drops the connection with BT after a call. That is a huge delema. Well I took BT AudioOn.exe and copied the file to the windows start menu programs and soft reset. As expected, or hoping, BT SoundON.exe showed up in the buttons menu. Nice thing about the MDA is that button #4 is assigned by default to Voice Speed Dial, which I re assigned to MVC, right? Well same button serves two purposes, 1st as mentioned for MVC and hold for recordings. So I was able to kill two birds with one stone, by asigning the hold feature to BT SoundON. Now when I make a call using MVC and it drops off, I simply hold button 4 to trigger BT SoundOn, then press botton 4 again quickly and Bingo MVC kicks in on BT. Works great. Hey I cant do this consistently by pressing the connect button on BT, but it works for everything including sound, etc. This will do till MS comes out with New Rom update. I am sure they are getting many concerns. Works Brother. This was a fun drill! THANKS FOR ALL UR INPUT & support. Some poor frustrated person will be glad to read this thread one day.

Glad to hear you got it working - that's a great workaround.

I was sitting with a few other parents while my son was in his martial arts class tonight (and I was waiting for my turn on the mat) and spent a few minutes showing off the voice dialing on my MDA to a friend who was showing me his Blackberry from Verizon. He was blown away by Voice Command and how well it worked. It makes an especially nice demo when you integrate it with something like PocketZenPhone, and show people how you can fire up VC, and tell it to change your phone profile.

Now that you have BT audio working...you might consider adding in PocketZenPhone and hooking it up to VC. If you do...you should definitely bypass the current version 5.52 that's for sale, and go straight to the version 6 beta 7 -- it has a different dir structure, and you'll want to be configured as per version 6 so that you can also use the free download to create profile selection link files (shortcuts) that you can invoke from Voice Command...

I am going to lock at that today. I find great apps on boards from just observing converstions with people. Lets talk a little about the applications u use, and the applications I use. I will give you a list of what I use, and links to everything, cause like u, I was in the IT industry for 17 years, before going into Mortgages. But ofcourse computers have always helped me in any industry. So you have a son. That's great! I have a son too. He is in Colorado at present.

The neat thing about PPC's apps are really cheap to buy. My registered applications:

MS Voicecommand, of course.
SK Tools http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14288.
I love this set of utilities with SD format, etc.

SK Menu http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=16984. I couldn't live without this. MW5 simply does not give me enouph flexibility to customize the menu.

Kilmist Registry Editor: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=3648. Of course no serious PPC user would be without a regedit, right? I mean a table top pc comes with a command run line, but how do you access the registry without one on a PPC.

Wi-Fi Companion: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=20127
I can't say enouph about this broadband utility. It makes me feel I can tap into the world of free hotspots, cause at present I surely don't pay for hot spots with t-mobile. Why? I can be passing a libary and get wireless. I go to my favorite morning breakfast place, and they give me wireless. As a matter of fact, the Karate place near kinkos (which is a hotspot with t-mobile) has a wireless lan, so I park close to it when going to Kinkos.

Net Browswer: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14818 . These utility is incredible. I can get into my home LAN, tap into my table top pc resources and copy and past files, etc., to the MDA, or from the MDA. Great when my daughter is using her computer, and my activesync works only on her system. I can simply browse my internal LAN see my SSID and access her 2nd drive on LAN with all my files for the pocket pc, plus.

eWallet: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=169 . I don't use the pro one. I only use the one for the PPC. Great tool! I keep my PPC password protected, but eWallet has a different password. Nice to keep all ur credit card and private information in a secured form available.

MemMaid: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14279 . You got to have something that makes up for a Table Top PC Norton Utilities, or just to keep ur ppc clean. MemMaid is the best at this. I have another one called: SpaceReclaimer, but not as detailed as MemMaid.

Games: Hey what good is a ppc without some games.

SkyForce: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14651 . I may be an old fart, but been playing PC games when Shareware was the thing on boards. Today shareware is now "try before u buy". I use to have abulletin board service 10-12 yrs ago. yes I am old. I was on the Internet when it was Fidonet, and 9600 Bd modems. That's another story. Skyforce is awesome!

GilbertPDA: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=12574 . Initially I got this for myself and my 15 yr old daughter. It reminded me of good old days with the kids using Monkey Island from Lucas Films. I remember my first Sound card 8bit. Gilbert PDA is adventure game, and takes long time to solve. The neat thing about it, you can go to the developers site and download .cab files for sounds and music, which does not come with original, and it blows u away on a PPC brother. I hate reading text on a game, but this games talks to u with expanded packs.

Shanghai: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=2084 . Great game. Got this for my wife originally, but got hooked on it myself. There is also an expansion pkg for FREE from the developer. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=2506 .

PocketTV. No real use for this yet, Registration is FREE, but nice to impress someone with a movie or two right from their site. I like to one with the two little aliens lost, good showman.

Opera Browswer: http://www.opera.com/ . This is what I uses to get on the Internet. I can't even access movies.com with PIE (movies.com tells me to upgrade PIE). This is got to be the best browser for pocket pc on the market today. It is incredibly fast.

NetFront V3.2: http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=18366 .I bought this one before trying out Opera, but very dissapointed, although it supports Flash, and Opera does not, yet.

AIM: But I don't use the pocket pc version which charges u for text msgs. I use the internet ppc version, so I can get on sometimes and yell at my daughter for not hearing me. Fun at best. But could be used for business purposes.

Other non registered apps I am trying out:

FTP for my website. I don't use aol or alike accounts, have my own websites, so I like accessing my websites files, if necessary.

Well that't me from 3rd party apps in a nutshell. What do u have?

Posted by: turk.o

hey maddog, thanks for the informative post, two questions:

1) Which AIM app do you use exactly, i haven't found one that works halfway decently yet.

2) what FTP applications have you found? the only one i could locate so far was the FTP part of Total Commander which, as far as I can tell, is not fully functional in WM%>

thanks

I use RESCO File explorer. it has a ftp and registry editor addon that comes with it. I run a few game servers and the RESCO ftp allows me to do anything I need to from my phone. you can find it by googling resco. it also has a today plugin with it that I havnt tried yet.
wyen I get more time (im at work right now) ill put up the other software that I use with the links to them. only had my MDA for about 3 weeks now, but I have tested many apps.

After trying out a bunch of stuff... here's a rundown of what I'm currently using (after my 4th hard reset).

I also use MemMaid -
takes the garbage out for me when needed.

Battery Pack Pro -
Has a lot of usefull tools that are easy to use and are easy to get to. One of the best is the lil' red X that it places where "ok" usually goes allowing you to really close running apps instead of minimizing them.

TomTom Navigator 5 -
Took some tweaking to get it to work properly with my Bluetooth GPS reciever (purchased off of Ebay), but once I got I working it is awesome.

Resco File Explorer -
better and easier to use than the built in file explorer.

Resco Registry Editor -
do I really need to explain why?

Age Of Empires Gold -
(plus the extra scenerios and campaigns). Very addicting stategy game.

Battleship -
Anyone else have it and wanna play a vs game?

Striker X -
Classic! And awesome graphics as well...

SBSH Pocket Weather -
I have not tried other weather apps, but I do not see the need to do so since this does everything I need.

Pocket Breeze -
Very cool app to keep everything organized.

IM+ -
Allows me to be signed in to Google Talk, AIM, YIM and MSN all at the same time (although it is slightly on the expensive side).

Also I am using the trial version of Agenda Fusion, seems like a really cool PIM so far, but not to sure if it is worth the purchase yet.
