Maddog - thanks - good info re: apps. I don't have that much loaded yet. What I am using includes:

- MS Voice Command of course (downloaded and purchased). Fantastic - must-have feature for me - would NOT be without it going forward.

- Resco File Explorer, and as i3onk mentioned, it includes an excellent registry editor as well as an FTP addon (haven't tried the FTP piece yet - no need so far).

- PocketZenPhone - as I mentioned earlier, this is an excellent phone profile manager - very highly recommended. It's lean, quick and feature-rich, letting you define anywhere from 2 to 7 profiles for your phone, each of which can control things like ringtones, volume, vibration, screen/light flashing and combinations of these such as "vibrate", "vibrate then ring", "vibrate AND ring", "ascending ring volume", etc -- and you can generally set a lot of these combinations for a load of different types of event notification, such as incoming phone call, incoming email, incoming SMS, new SMS, missed phone call, new email, etc. With PZP you can invoke its profiles via a menu, via icons on a today plugin (totally skinnable) and a popup menu from the task tray.

- Wisbar Advance 2 - very nice, powerful, skinnable

- PocketBreeze - all my PIM/PDA info right from the today screen - skinnable

- ContactBreeze - plugin for PocketBreeze, enhances contact manager, including giving you an oversized virtual keypad that pops up on the lower half of your screen when you're searching for a contact - makes it easy to find people just by tapping with your thumb while using the phone one-handed.

- iLauncher - lets up set up icon bars in your today screen. I've got one that takes up very little today screen real estate, and I can have bar show any one of a number of pages that I can define (e.g., games, music, programs, documents, ringtones, etc).

- Memmaid - quick, easy and effective way to keep your environment cleaned up - recovers memory, clears out dead-wood, locates duplicate notification queue entries, clears out bad registry entries and left-over mess from failed uninstalls.

- Pocket Screen Capture - freeware that does a great job of capturing the screen to an image file. Tiny, free, and works just right.

- IBM J9 MIDP 2.0 version 5.7.2 java midlet manager - lets me use midlets such as the satellite view from google local.

- Registry Wizard from xda-developer.com - great way to toggle a good selection of registry tweaks from the default setting to an "optimized" setting.

If you want to skin the user interface, there are a couple of folks - probably "Juni" being one of the very best (if not THE best?), who come up with gorgeous "skin sets" that offer unified themes, with coordinating skins for multiple products - so one skin set, for example, will include matching skins for five or six different products that you might use together on your phone. Makes for a great looking user interface.

I also like the idea of skinning "dial pad" -- the default pink rectangels that WM5 displays (at least in the T-Mobile version) are too small, and blah. With a dial pad skin, the whole thing looks SO much better when you go to dial a call. ZPhone skins look good, and there are a few others out there as well. Worth doing a google search for these...and I'll be doing some experimentation myself as well.

That's it for now. Can't load anything more to be resident in memory, but I'll be looking at other progs that I can run on demand -- lots of room on my miniSD!

Excellent phone, great experience and utility, and I only expect it to keep getting better as I learn more and tweak it more.

I am defenetly going to look at the skins and some of ur stuff on google. Hopefully their easy to find. I just got back to my ofc from Kinkos. Hey did u know that t-mobile is offering free hot-spots on weekends a promotion. Just incase u find ur self in hot-spot this weekend. I got on at Kinkos, t-mobile's msg said, "oops it's not the weekend". So it seems on weekends you can get a PW Key emailed to u for Free access. Nice of them.

I also picked up a Netgear G router for 39bucks. Man this stuff would cost hundreds just a few year ago. I actually got a guy at Comp USA who wants an MDA, and new something about it. He said, I would not see much faster, speed on G router, cause the MDA has only a 200MHZ CPU. I agreed, to some degree, but like the idea of faster access. And trying out the hack for 802.11G, It works!

Hey it's fun talking about this device, cause it's the best gadget I have ever owned, no kidding. Besides who the heck else wants to listen to us gadget guys. I took my family to Florida Aquarium Monday, cause my youngest daugther is off for spring brake from highschool. I did not bring a digital camara. I have a sony digital, and a sony dvd, but did not bring them. But wait I have a camara on this device, how sweet. Hey lots of fools out there bashing this little camara 1.2 Megapxls, but let me tell you, I don't carry a seperate digital camara with me in my car. I was glad to take some pictures of some very interesting salt water, very rare dragon fish, cause I have a saltwater tank. And the picture quality was really impressive on the MDA. I would not go to Disneyworld all day to take pictures with my family, but it just craks me up when I see reviews, or users complaining about the quality. I say this, if they were to put a 5 megapixel camara on these devices, with a great flash, or dvd quality video, most people would not be able to afford one!
At the Aquarium people were looking at me as if I was from Star Wars with this thing, phone and all it's options.

I can't see them changing this product much in the future, cause the screen size, and kb is as small as I would live with for a ppc. About the only thing I would upgrade to, would be, 128MB RAM, possible much larger ROM Storage, and defenetly a faster MGZ CPU without trading off battery life, but for the most part, what can they improve on? Oh a 5megapixel camara, possibly?

I did like the Qtek9000 and almost got one http://www.gsmarena.com/qtek_9000-reviews-1264.php Powerful! But reviews fell a little short to the MDA

This device is unique! I even went to Spain to get a case (kidding). Well cases.com got one for me, but the company that makes the case is in Spain.

Check out this case: http://www.pielframa.com/qtek_9100.htm

I looked at my Tweak2k2 and did not see one. I will post one if I come across one. I'm still looking for a hack that makes the keyboard light up longer for the MDA. It seems tweak2k2 has this hack, but for the HTC Blue Angel only, cause it's shaded out. By the time we get done will all these hacks, you would think Microsoft would incorproate half of them on their hopefully upcoming ROM Bios upgrade.

Oh well.

You know I started to look again and wonder where the heck did I get this version. It's really cool, even the door chime comes on, similar to desktop. Let me see....

Here it is: http://www.aim.com/get_aim/win_ce/latest_wince.adp . I could not click on download, maybe their ftp is down, but I have it working on the MDA and it works beautifully! If you can't get this, send me private msg, and I will email aol.exe file to you, or however, I can get it to u here.

When u go to this site, it may seem that it only supports Windows CE/Pocket PC, and it seems like older version, but I tell u it works seemlessly on my MDA WM5. Maybe I just got lucky.

Not sure what u mean by a ROM backup? I guess your talking about backing up your Program Files in the device section, cause this is were WM5 loads programs, or cab files, to ROM. That's the 40 MB of usable internal storage. Well if that's what u meant, why would you want to format SD card?

When I format SD card, if necessary, I use SK Tools, google it. Great utility.

I also use MemMaid -
takes the garbage out for me when needed.

Battery Pack Pro -
Has a lot of usefull tools that are easy to use and are easy to get to. One of the best is the lil' red X that it places where "ok" usually goes allowing you to really close running apps instead of minimizing them.

TomTom Navigator 5 -
Took some tweaking to get it to work properly with my Bluetooth GPS reciever (purchased off of Ebay), but once I got I working it is awesome.

Resco File Explorer -
better and easier to use than the built in file explorer.

Resco Registry Editor -
do I really need to explain why?

Age Of Empires Gold -
(plus the extra scenerios and campaigns). Very addicting stategy game.

Battleship -
Anyone else have it and wanna play a vs game?

Striker X -
Classic! And awesome graphics as well...

SBSH Pocket Weather -
I have not tried other weather apps, but I do not see the need to do so since this does everything I need.

Pocket Breeze -
Very cool app to keep everything organized.

IM+ -
Allows me to be signed in to Google Talk, AIM, YIM and MSN all at the same time (although it is slightly on the expensive side).

Also I am using the trial version of Agenda Fusion, seems like a really cool PIM so far, but not to sure if it is worth the purchase yet.

It's cool to see what others buy for their little gadget. TomTom sounds interesting, although I got a DVD GPS on my truck. But who the heck knows, maybe I'll get lost in the woods someday.

I have tried several, so far the one I am using is Orneta FTP. I thought Orneta FTP was a freebie, but I think it's cheap for 8-or 9 bucks. So far it works and has not hassles. http://www.handango.com/PlatformPro...productId=99042 . This is a smartphone application, why it's possibly cheaper, but believe me, most smart phone applications work well on WM5 ppc's, that is the beauty of were this OS his heading.

For the most part, as long as ur wi-fi is working up and running, most FTP software I have tried works, it's a matter of bucks!

Has anyone come across this FTP site: http://ppcsoft.org/downloadss/games/

I stumbled on this FTP site one night, I could not believe all the free games, and hacked games. But some don't work on WM5.0 SO BE CAREFULL!!!!

I downloaded a ton of them, not sure what the heck for, or what to do with most of them, except I have tried some on my older Pocket PC WM 2003CE, and they look really nice, but tried one on the WM5 and could not get it to work. Looks like Russian FTP site, who the heck knows....

If any of them work on the WM5 pls let us know.

I m glad this helps cause it took a lot of frustration of my life.. Starting with Microsoft and why the heck they could't support this in the first place!

I tried it today all day, it worked like a charm. I made calls, and after hangup MVC would stop. Since you only need it to use MVC to make outgoing calls, u don't need to use this all the time. But when u do, one button, I held it down, Bt SoundON, quick release, press again, and bingo MVC over BT. I love it. I know keep the BT SoundOFF.exe file on my first menu item, incase I need to turn it off, cause it only turns off MVC after you make a call, or get a call. Try loading BT SoundOn, before a game, you will get sound via BT too. Great game sound tool if your in area where u want to look busy, but ur really playing a game.

Good

Posted by: The Trooper

I'll try out the game thing later.

I'm now trying to find a way to not use Button 4 (Hold) to activate BTAudioOn and Button 3 for VC. The only thing I can think of is to assign them a Voice Speed Dial to activate them and then use them....I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

Earlier I was listening to WMP through my BT headset and it sounds decent considering its Mono.

EDIT: I found something in the MDA FAQ about using it directly instead of the built in dialer and it works!

goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\Path". Change the default value from "\Windows\SDDialer.exe" to "\Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe".

Not sure cause button 3 defaults to camera. I would rather keep that as camera. Glad MDA has so many buttons. Are u using button 3 for something else?

It just seems logical to use button 4 for MVC, and Button 4 (Hold) for BT AudionON. It makes this procedure simple. You hold button 4 to trigger BT soundON, let go, then press button 4 to trigger MVC via BT. The entire procedure becomes simple this way. It's almost scary as if it was designed to do just that, if necessary. Why would that not work for u?

As far as sounds over BT using BT SoundOn, sure, it's going to be mono at best. The whole purpose of the feature is to get sound on BT for private reasons. I had SkyForce going on BT the other day in an office waiting, and this game has really great stereo effects. I had to lower the speaker level on MDA, and got the BT sounding pretty decent for mono. At least I could hear the effects without disturbing anyone.

OK now that Im home form work.

AEbutton--lots of options for remapping your buttons. Can map a button to work on single click, double click, tripple click and press and hold. All four having different functions for the same button.

Pocket Breeze and Contact Breeze--lots of functionality for your calendar, tasks, notes, messages, special events and of course your contacts.

SBP pocket--Same as ilauncher. Just a few tabs to have quick access to any apps and files that you need, as well as your favorite web pages.(ilauncher is actually from the same company that makes the pocket and contact breeze so I may just switch to that for simplicity.

pocket weather--quite possibly the most comprehensive weather plugin for y our today screen. Totally cusomizable and shows you everything from the 5 day forcast to sun up and down times and the thing I found neat was the tabs that gives you the most recent earthquake activity in the area that you are monitoring.

resco explorer--with the ftp and registry editor addins. As I said before, I run a few game servers and am always needing total access tot he servers via FTP. This app is perfect for that.

memmaid--for cleaning up all of those pesky memory eating files and registry keys that are no longer needed. Hell I ran it this afternoon and cleaned up about 7M worth of space from my storage memory.

IBM J9 MIDP 2.0 version 5.7.2 java midlet manager for use with google local, which I actually find to be a very handy app.

Games..right now Im only playing virtual pool mobile. Im only using the trial version but thats all I need. I dont need to play in a bunch of different settings. Has 9 ball and 8 ball.

Maddog, I tried installing the Wi-Fi companion and have had issues with it. Keeps giving me an error on install that reads in short: it cant find that WLAN tools or too few resources to run the app. Verify installation of WLAN tools and try again: Well I know I have enough resources, and have never installed WLAN tools. After looking through some websites I have found that there is an extensive list of WLAN tools to be had. What are you using?

Posted by: kdenninger

Wifi companion won't run on mine either.

Posted by: The Trooper

Actually it was Button 4 and 4 Hold I was using I just confused them

I could've tried the SkyForce with BT sound on but I had to uninstall it to install VC, however, the SNES emulator I have sounds awesome over BT I know have something to do during WEX-101!

I'm now using that redirect in the MDA FAQ (the one I posted in the edit before) and it seems to be working well...except for the inconsistency after the call but the remedy to that is easy. I use one of the following: either I hold the Button #4 or I activate BTAudioON through VC (I placed it in the Start menu) by just saying "Start BTAudioON".

I am satisfied with the mono sound for now but whenever the infamous A2DP comes around I am sure as hell going to get BT Headphones

I have noticed though that since I did that redirect from SDDialer.exe to voicecmd.exe it hasn't been recognizing accurately some of my commands maybe because there was other noise or something...

Now that you're not using sddialer anymore, you can remove the call in the startup folder to the sddaemon -- I haven't personally noticed a difference, but some people claimed that this improved their experience with Voice Command. Also never hurts to remove things that you don't need that are using resources!

Which version did u install. The try before u buy setup, I believe, is not a good version for WM5. Cause I had issues and there support linked me to a better version which gave me no problems. Althoug it was a cab, not an install on pc version. I got to admit, changed my router to G, and have been having some pathetic issue getting on. Oh well

The version I have is a .cab file named:
Wi-Fi.Companion.2.7.2.0.WM5.ARMV45I

U might have the install version: WIFISoftware2[1].6.0.0 This one gave me issues. The WIFIICON.ink in startup, which is shortcut for WIFIICON.exe in Windows folder did not load properly. See if u can get the .cab version, it works, if not let me know, I will send it to u, however u want. Can I attach a file to u via this board?

There is a size and file type limitation but yes you can attach files.

Its interesting u mention that. Cause when I soft reset, I get this msg sddaemon on top bar, and it was bogging me. I will remove it.

Hey let me ask u a question. When u soft boot the MDA, does it take a long time to reboot for u? Cause man, I can reboot a table top pc faster and the MDA is still rebooting. Drives me crazy to have to soft boot.

Also do u have a file in startup called CapNotify? What is it for?

It feels a little that way when you 1st change it, but it gets better, probably noise.

I haven't timed reboot from soft reset, but it DOES take a while. The add-ins also slow this down. I'm pretty sure, for example, that when MS Voice Command initializes, it has to scan your phone book as well as the entire directory path starting with "Windows\Start Menu" (and everything below), and build an internal pronounciation table from all the contact names in the phone book and the program and lnk file names in the path. I'm pretty sure it does this -- I know, for example, that when you add program or lnk files in the start menu path, VC doesn't know about them until your soft reset -- so I'm guessing it goes through the same process for your address book too. Parsing and analyzing the names in real-time wouldn't be practical on a device like this, so I'm convinced it must be preprocessing them. I have about 200 names in my address book -- it yours is much bigger, it could take longer to process.

CapNotify is a program that, I believe, runs in the background that works along with the registry mod to show when your keyboard is in caps or lowercase mode. The reg key is:

HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd\EnableIndicator

...and you would set it to "1" to display the caps indicator (or the "dot" when you're using the "alternate function" shift key -- bottom left on kybd).

I just uploaded this for u, here is the link http://www.savefile.com/projects.php?pid=932601

Thanks for that I just removed it right now.

MadDogX007: my MDA takes its time when rebooting but I can tolerate it Also its not all the time...not most of it either.

OK here's one. Anyone know the registry key to make the hardware clicks stay on? Mine seams to decide to turn itself off when it feels like it. I will go to settings>notifications and turn it on, and within a few hours it is back off again.

Hey bro from NJ ur back. I got family in NJ. Originally from Staten Island.

I got a Netgear G wireless router, and have to return the darn thing. For 39 bucks it seemed like a deal, but for reasons I still can't figure out, it will not assign me an IP in DHCP mode. It's weird, if I get close to the router, when signal is almost 100%, I get the IP, but when I go to other side of house, signal is still good about 49%, but don't get IP. So hooked up my old DLink 802.11b and no problems. Weird. I dissabled everything on that G router, left it un incrypted, still no IP assignment. What do u think, before I return it.

Also is there any fact to this. If you hack the registry and change the defaults 802.11.b to 802.11G, does it really make a difference? Cause we have a 200MHZ CPU? Cause here is the observation I made. Using Wi-Fi Companion I can see I'm connected at 11Mbps on b only router. But when Im connected to the 802.11G there is no rate in Mbps for it. One reason is the Wi-Fi rate only goes up to 11Mbps, and I guess it does not know what to make of faster speed. Whats ur feeling on this and the CPU when accessing the Internet in G.

Food for thought troops

I would have to experiment with the clicks, but my problems is, I don't want them on, so if it does what u said, then it actually works in my favor. Cause I turn the clicks off for KB, menus, etc.

Now that u have Wi-Fi, try hacking ur MDA to 802.11G. Cause T-mobile, I understand, left it at 802.11b, cause most hot spots are not yet upgraded. Do u have a router with 802.11G, if yes what is ur experience.

Also does anyone else have this happend to them. When I use the phone button, I can't ever get rid of the dialer, without going to some extreme. I discovered that the little button to hang up can be pressed twice tol get rid of it. Nice little features on the MDA, but weird that the dialer just sits there, as if it almost does not want to leave, u shut it down on X but endedup in contacts, and vise versa.

Look down further for another trooper with same issue. I uploaded file to ftp site for download.

have it hacked to 802.11g with registry wizard. Havnt tried to see if there is a difference yet. I dont use wireless in my house. I have my whole house wired. Wired each room to the router. Had too many probs with the last wireless router disconnecting so we decided to go with wiring the house to the router. The next door neighbors have wireless but havnt checked to see the speed. Ill check that and get back to you.

Havnt hasd the problem you are dealing experiencing with the dialer. 9 times out of 10 I use voice to dial so I rarley see the dialer. When I do connect my call I x out of the phone app and turn off my screen so I dont have to worry abotu disconnecting the call witl the phone is in my pocket.

This board is getting me excited! I went back to the old school. The Free FTP site I am using will not allow me to upload .exe files. So I pulled out and old version of pkzip, and bingo. I uploaded the file for u in zip form. Use winzip and unzip the aim.exe file. This should work cause it works for me beautifully on the MDA WM5. And I don't pay for txt msgs from T-Mobile bro. This is the AIM for PPC/Internet

I had my whole house wired too 5 yrs ago, but last year went out and got a wireless router/smartswitch for laptop purposes, this was a good upgrade to my home LAN. Just make sure if u do, that use 128 bit encryption, and possibly mac filtering, cause i get many free unincrypted airways in my neighborhood. Sometimes I use my neighbors, depending where I am outside, and if his comes in stronger. But I am very respecful of the free radio airways. I m not so generous. :-). If u do get ur neighbor and wi-fi does not report 11Mbps, then ur using a G router.

Yeah for the most part. I use it in conjunction with tweaks2k2. I get three uses out of tweaks2k2 and I only need one to get the settings out of it that I need, so I dont bother registering it. If I have to hard reset i get another 3 uses. LOL. registry wizard has a few different reg hax so I like to use them both. Tweaks2k2 has more but reg wiz has a few different ones

Going to wait a few hours to test the neighbors lan. Just got my new backup battery today (MDA sucks the juice out of these things) so Im going No charge up the backup before i do anything else on it.

Oh here are a couple items I just purchased online and recieved within the past two days.

New Stylus: I hate the one that came with the MDA. I am already on the spare. The first one stopped opening when I pulled it out of the phone. I keep one of these in my apron at work and one at home.

Screen Protectors: I was afraid of scratching the screen so I got some protectors. They are OK. They have more of a, shall we say..mushy feeling...than the screen without them, but once the bubbles settle, makes for nice protection.
There are some seriously lame and some cool accesories for the MDA on this site. I think I will be getting the MDA IV USB Cradle for my desk. Here is the link for the screen protectors though.

If you are looking for a spare battery, I would go through www.T-mobile.com .They are $10 cheaper than anyone else I have found.

Just in case the tweak2k2 site has it for 10bucks. What different hacks? Just curious.

A quesion. I notice that the t-mobile MDA Vario is always lower in price then the Qtek9100, K-Jam, etc. They are identical phones. Is it because the Qtek9100, etc come unlocked?

Maybe u know, just a curious animal.

Hey Dog! NJ blood! - as my son would say, quoting his Nickelodeon favorite, "Drake and Josh" - My brother from another mother! -- I'm originally from NYC (Riverdale)...

What you're describing re: the DHCP issue sounds familiar -- a fantastic resource for this kind of question would be the forums at dslreports.com. I've spent a LOT of time there in a couple of the router forums, and help edit the FAQ in the Belkin forum (I use their "Pre-N" device based on Airgo's "true MIMO" chipset - fantastic range, stability and throughput - and now Netgear and Linksys also have devices based on Airgo technology too). Anyway - the netgear forum there is at:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/netgear

If you post your question there, I'll bet you get a slew of answers within a few hours. Some very knowledgeable people there, and most are happy to help.

In the meantime, I'll skim my own notes and see if I can come up with some ideas for you to explore.

Re: 802.11b vs g: the speed numbers can be misleading, because they're talking about the ideal, full-rate connection speed, and not actual data throughput in a real world situation. Even with the best connection, there's overhead in a WLAN, error correction, etc, and real world throughput may be half of the 11Mbps they quote for the 802.11b standard. Similar situation with 802.11g.

Also - as you move out of the "ideal" range (i.e., more than 10 ft away!), throughput generally drops. So you want to start with the most possible, knowing in advance that "real world" will be far less than you would like it to be. For example -- if you have an 801.11b connection that can deliver 6 Mbps real world throughput at 15 ft, when you move 35 ft away, or into the next room, it may be half of that (pulling these numbers out of thin air, but the concept is solid).

Now - I don't know about your Internet connection, and none of this would matter at a T-Mobile hotspot, because they're provisioned with T1's that max out at 1.44 Mbps, so your WiFi will always exceed that. But at home, I've got a Comcast "Gold" internet account, and although it varies, I often see 12Mbps down. With my Belkin "pre-N", I get fantastic throughput even at a distance -- and I can still get great throughput down into my MDA using 802.11g even when I'm 2 or 3 rooms (and 1 floor) away from my router. Actually makes it reasonable to sit in bed, for example, and browse the net on my MDA.

Having 802.11g will also help when you're around other hotspots that DO support 802.11g, because once again you'll be able to get better throughput at a distance.

Also: if we ever get a way to do activesynch over WiFi again (they took it out when moving from 4.0 to 4.1 because corporate execs screamed about security), then it will be GREAT to have 802.11g -- synching will be a LOT faster.

I'd like to get a desk cradle for the MDA also - I already have too many cables on my desk, even with a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Still have my regular phone (wireless, but the stand has a power cord to it), flash memory reader (SanDisk 8-in-1), power cord to the stand/charger for my mouse, power cord to charge my BT headset, still the old power cord for my SE Z600, and now the USB charger cord for my MDA as well as the USB sync cord for my MDA. TOO much wire!!!

Re: spare battery - I'd love a bigger capacity one, but the only big ones I've seen are THICK and ugly, making the device much thicker. Hoping somebody will come out with a better battery at the same size.

Re: screen protector - lots of discussion in the FAQ and Tips/Tricks threads. After a lot of research, I finally ordered the "invisibleShield" - ought to be here tomorrow or Saturday. Amazing material - a single one should last for years, and reports here are that they still feel great with a stylus and don't interfere with using the touch screen. They're at

http://www.shieldzone.com/

...and they list protectors for 3 different flavors of HTC Wizard variants (qtek, MDA, k-jam I believe) -- 1 is screen only for about $11, and the others are full-body wraps (not quite, but they include extra pieces to cover most of the back of the phone as well as the screen) for $24. You've GOT to watch their demo videos off the home page. Very impressive!

Ahhh dslreports.com now knows as broadbandreports.com . I in the BBR Americasarmy gaming clan. Just thought I would toss that out there, LOL.

MadDog, Im willing to bet, thats why it costs more. You can get any phione for a certain price and then try to get the same phone unlocked and yer looking at $100+ or more in price.

As far as what RegWiz has that tweaks2k2 doesnt have. I think there are only a few.

Enable 802.11G
Disable message sent notification
Disable non cert. app install warning
disable go online warning. ( I "HATE" the gprs connecting popup. Doesnt kill all of them, but it pops up alot less now )

---This is just a note for everyone for general purposes---

If you are installing either ilauncher or sbp pocket plus/ and also installing pocket breeze. Install pocket breeze first. I noticed that if you install pocket breeze after one of the tabbed launchers...unless you make the size of pocketbreeze pretty small you will end up with a scroll bar on your today screen( I hate that)
If you install pocketbreeze first then one of the launchers, the launcher will be above pocketbreeze. This allows you to have the rest of the today screen for you tasks, contactbreeze and such without the scroll bar.
May not be a big tdeal to everyoen else, but I am a major neat freak when it comes to desktops/today screens.

please excuse any typos, as a large amount of Guinness will do that to you

I was looking at the new MDA Vario II displayed at Celbeit coming out this year. I am happy to say that most features have not changed drastically enouph to upgrade any time soon . The RAM is still 64MB, the ROM is still 128MB, the 802.11G on the Vario II, is available on the Vario with a hack, bluetooth is still 2.0. The only real differences the CPU has gone from 200MHZ to 300MHZ, the unit is 3G, but in this country that's still long way off, I believe. The camara has gone from 1.3 megapixel to 2.0. It looks very similar in design, nothing seriously changed, still slide out KB, actually the Vario, I believe, has better looking style then Vario II. They slightly modified some bottons a bit, nothing drastic, just looks a little more boxier then the current MDA Vario which has smoother look.

I will upgrade when the Vario becomes a 4-500MHZ CPU, without effecting battery life, 128MB RAM (min), a 3-4 Megapixel camara (not complaining), and possibly a VGA screen, nothing much more to add to this incredible device, if they give me all that with a smaller screen, I will have to change devices cause the screen is about the smallest I will accept for a PPC (don't think they will do that anyhow)

Not sure that would justify spending that much on only one sheet for me (probably should) but Im to leary of infomercials like that. Let me know how it works for you. If y ou feel it is definatly worth the money I may concider it.

Something I did Just purchase today.

i3onk (as in, "i3onk - i3onk on the head!" ?) -- I read a bunch of reviews of the invisibleShield before deciding to try it -- so far they're universally positive. Also - if it even lasts a few years (as opposed to "life"), it's probably worth paying $11 for it instead of having to peel off and replace another type of shield every 6 to 12 months. Also - assuming the company stays in business, your invisibleShield has a lifetime replacement warranty if it ever scratches or fails, and they'll send you a new one BEFORE you send in the old one. A bit pricey, but in the scheme of things it seemed to make sense.

I posted a few days ago that I had come across another company that claims to be using the same kind of film to make their shields, and they only charge something like $4.50. From what I can tell, the film is made by 3M, and is probably the same stuff (or very similar) used to make the invisible skins for the front end of cars to prevent dings and scratches (replaces the need for bras on the front of cars). So there's no magic about the material -- in theory, any company could decide to get it by the roll from 3m and go into business die-cutting it for devices like the MDA. I just think it's an excellent choice of materials.

Note -- no guarantee that the cheaper company ("BestSkinsEver") is using the same film that ShieldZone uses for invisibleShield -- just the implication on BestsSkinsEver website. But it's plausible...

The company selling the shields for $4.50 does NOT provide the "application solution" (which I believe is just slightly soapy water, which you can make up yourself with a bit of liquid detergent), and they don't include a lifetime warranty. They might be great, but it appears to be a brand new or home-based teensy business. Hopefully they'll make it and grow, but they're not as substantial in appearance as ShieldZone. If you want to take a chance and check them out, they're at:

No actually it's i3onk as in Bonkers D Bobcat

Well I just got my screen protectors yestersday so I think I will at least use the 15...no wait 14 I have ( i jacked up the first one puting it on...pain in the ***.) I think I got confused when you said 30 day money back. I didnt realise there was a lifetime with them. (didnt read ther site, just watched the videos) I will definatly keep them in mind then. That makes a big difference as long as they make them for the MDA and I dont have to cut them.

I will surely post on the 2G minisd as soon as I get it. should be about a week or so.

Screen protector:http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...roduct_Count=13

If you are looking for a spare battery, I would go through www.T-mobile.com .They are $10 cheaper than anyone else I have found.

Thanks for the accessories site, where the heck was this a couple weeks ago. I got a leather case but paid more for it. I was killing myself on google trying to find an accessories site for the MDA, all I kept getting was UK sites and limited stuff. Good job. The screen thing sounds interesting, how does it feel to u?

Interesting product that Drypack. A few years ago went canoeing in river carrying what was then my Nextel, and my son rocked the canoe, and three of us went down, in streaming waters, all I can remember is trying to save my bag with phone, thank goodness my kids know how to swim, cause like an idiot I did not use a product like the Drypack. Here is a crazy solution if ur cell/pda/ppc drops in water for a few hours, and believe me, weird as this sounds, it worked. Although u have to apply this immediately!

If ur cell/pda/ppc (no guarantee but better than nothing) drops in water (like river, beach) for a while, get small container ASAP, and emerge device in rubbing alcahol for one hour or so, then immediately place device in freezer over night. Crazy! Yes, but this came from an angineer in cell phones, and believe it or not, my nextel phone was dead on arrival after river and 3 days of not knowing what to do with it. After this solution, it actually got power and turned on. I was amazed! I simply felt I waited too long to try it, cause when I opned up the case the electronics were corrupted. Not sure what happens with this old tails remedy but alcahol, rubbing type, does something to restore the electronics, and freezing over night, well, im convinced from phone death to life, that had I applied it right away, would have given my phone life again.

First thing to do with ANY electronic items that get wet is to remove the power source - in this case, get the battery out ASAP.

If the device fell into salt water, you'll want to get all the salt off and out of the device ASAP, as this can and will corrode part inside. Even though it sounds crazy, if the device is already soaked, rinsing it quickly one more time to get the salt out is better than leaving the salt in/on it.

The point of the alcohol is interesting -- I don't know the chemistry in detail, but as I recall, alcohol and water will partially combine, effectively "sopping up" the free water, and depending on how much alcohol is present, you'll have some unmixed alcohol left behind as well. The alcohol/water mix is volatile, and should evaporate a lot faster than pure water. The alcohol also shouldn't be corrosive to the circuitry in the phone.

I have no idea why the freezer is part of this, unless the idea is to slow down any corrosion that might take place, and chemical reactions in general. But I'd think that you really want to get the liquid out of the device as quickly as possible, and freezing would just slow that whole process down...I don't get that part, but the alcohol idea sounds like it's got legs.

My concern, though, is that some of the plastic parts might not fare well with alcohol. I really don't know how vulnerable the phone parts are to this. Worth researching more before we make the solution an FAQ item, but I suspect this is on the right track...

Posted by: MadDogX007

All i can say is it did bring life back to phone. I even rember doing twice poured rubbing alcahol over device in container, then freezing it over night, next day it stayed on longer, but like isaid electronics got way to corrupted waiting 3 days.

Posted by: i3onk

as far as I know alcohol doesn't freeze. so I think by putting it in the freezer is keeps the water from soaking into the electronics even more, giving the alcohol more time to soak it up.

Are we having fun yet? For reasons I'm not sure, when I press and hold button 4 now, I get "Failed to enable BT audio" . Just when I thought my problems were over. Now not sure what next. If I recall the only thing I have done since my loading BT SoundOn and testing it, was, I insalled my favorite old school game Doom on the PPC. It took some time and energy, but something in me just wanted Doom, tested a bunch of non working Doom .exe files to eliminate the working one, which is how I feel at this mement Doomed . So many stupid little things on the WM5 that annoy me. Besides MVC and BT, why did MS not include a backup utility like iPaq does? I tried using SK Tools bckup, but it does not support WM5 yet, on complete backup feature. I had backed up my registry using another editor, and restored it, but BT SoundOn same msg, seems not to like something. So I am spending time backing things up, cause I got to try a hard boot just to see if it's not something else. Wonderfull drill, to see if all my backing up can restore me quickly. But I may have to buy a backup utilities, like I have had on my old T-mobile pocket pc, and my iPaq 6315.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Bill Gates for putting his name on the new OS's, while other nincompoops implement his ideas. Cause they managed to take away things from WM5, that WM2003 was succussfully doing. Like Media 10. What happened to a simple feature like "Play lists" and "organizing play lists". Why for the life of me does MS have to constantly change things, like changing furniture around in hellen keller's home. Why not leave things that work alone, and expand into new frontiers with new never seen features.

Sorry man got to let out a little heat!

Try this man. This may do exactly what you are looking for. Im pretty sure it will.

Its SBP backup. I actually prefer their SBP pocket plus to Ilauncher, and remember seeing the backup utility on this site. Hope it works out for you man.

I'm not sure if any of you guys have had to do a hard boot on the MDA. But I am going to share with you some experiences, that may or may not help you.

On my old T-Mobile pocket pc, and ipaq H6315, the neat fact about those WM2003 devices was, they both came with backup utilities that were reliable! On the original T-Mobile Pocket PC if you had to do a hard boot, since it had no ROM, and your SD card, was in tact, you could restore the "complete backup", and you were up and running in no time.

On the iPaq h6315, if you required a hard boot, it NEVER removed the iPaq storage (ROM) or mess with the SD Storage (understood). The key thing was it never messed with the ROM storage. Thus you could do a complete restore, and be up and running in 10 minutes, without needing Hotsync involved. http://www.spritesoftware.com/en/pe...pport/index.htm .The only thing I would do, like I do with all these units, is backup the ROM storage, and SD Card storage, incase your SD card wipes out! And believe me, that has happened to me before for no reason at all! The only thing that has saved me was a complete mirrow of my SD card to my table top pc.

The breaking news about WM5.0, if u run out of battery life, nothing gets wiped out, cause storage can't be lost since it's all in ROM, unless you delete it! HOWEVER, if you require a hard boot, it wipes out your entire ROM storage. Also because no actual backup program comes with the MDA WM5, like the WM2003 units I owned, your left to do backups on your own, and that can be tidious process, especially if your relying on Hotsync. Also because your relying on your Hotsync to keep up your contacts and calender, with no built in reliable backup utility, if Hotsync is down, and your device goes down, and your SD Card gets wiped out, your screwed!

The neat thing about WM5, is that when you load applications to your device, your asked if you want to use the Extnal (SD) Storage OR Memory. When you select memory in WM5, it loads all your software to the Device/Program Files area AKA ROM, never touching your RAM. This works beautifully cause in WM2003 loading programs into memory meant using your RAM, unless you specifically had ROM storage, like the h6315, and chose to use that instead.

I tested the MDA unit out by hot reset before and it does just that, wipes out your entire ROM storage, however, this time I did a hot reset as specified by the manual which is to press voicecommand button, and comm manager, simulateously, while using stylis to gently press soft reset. Then holding both voicecommand button and comm mgr, then pressing send button to perform the actual cold/hard reset. I was hoping, unlike the utility in programs/setup which warns your that your about to wipe out storage (must enter password 123 to complete) this seperate procedure also wiped out the ROM storage.

Not complaining, just frastrated, on one hand the battery solution is great for not wiping out your ROM, but on the other hand, beware and prepared! I have backuped up certain folders, plus "Device/Program Files (were WM5 keeps your software in ROM), and I have backup of SD Card, plus registry, and, if my hotsync, thank goodness worked, cause it also has been giving me issues on the MDA, was working for my contacts and calender.

I think I am going to need to buy a reliable backup system for WM5, any ideas? Cause SKTools are great utilities, no doubt, but the complete backup feature is dissabled and warns you it does not work on WM5.

Just food for thought, cause I know it's not a matter of if, but a matter of when you have to hard reset ur device.

Alcohol's freezing point is WAY below that of water. Vodka afficionados will often store the good stuff in a freezer. If it has a good glycerin content, the Vodka will thicken and get a bit syrupy while super-cooled, making it ideal for those who like to swallow shots...but that's on a tangent...

Interesting to speculate -- here's my theory -- a slight variant on yours:

- Alcohol evaporates quickly at room temperature. If it evaporates before mixing thoroughly with the water, you won't have accomplished much.

- Chilling the alcohol prevents it from evaporating as quickly, giving me far more time to circulate through the device, sopping up any water it runs into.

Once it's had a chance to really come in contact with all the water in the device, then bringing it back to room temperature will encourage the volatile mix to evaporate - taking the water out with it.

The side benefit is that while cold, any water inside will have less corrosive action on the circuitry (reactions tend to be slower when the chemicals are cold).

Yes, SPB Backup will create an IMAGE of your device. If anythign goes kabloey, just restore and it'll be back as before.

I appreciate u looking out for me! Frustrated cause I restore device, but still can't get BT SoundON to cooperatate any more?? I dropped an email to developer, think it's developer, or whom ever requested a donation at original site from pay pal, await to see if he/she responds....

Thanks again.

Well as it turns out. I went to the board where most discussion are held about BT SoundON, utilities.... http://www.pdaphonehome.com/forums/...p?t=54951&pp=20 and it seems, based on some posts, that obviously your BT headset has to be on for BT SoundOn to work. But somehow my BT headset was not working today, and it seems to have dropped off or something got corrupted. But cold boot, and restoring forced me to have to pair headset again, and until I did, BT would not work, then it did again nicely. What an experience for a stupid simple thing, like re establishing the headset (pairing again) may have resolved the issue. Oh well Life goes on in the rollercoaster way of life with these devices. Thanks again for backup site. I defenetely got to have something, cause again, on the road, you need to restore the backup program, and then the backup file.

Posted by: MadDogX007

Well I bought the Spb backup. I liked the exe self extract file it creates, it fits in with my lifestyle, cause you don't need Spb installed to run he backup, good deal. I donwload the Spb Pocket Plus by accident believe it or not, thought it was the bkup. After I installed it I was looking for the backup feature, and wondered what the heck was this thing that changed my ppc, I had downloaded the wrong software. I was fatigued yesterday. But ended up liking it, it's sweet. I did not pay for the Plus software, and not sure if it requires it, weird, cause there is no section to enter registraion key, or something, will Sbp Pocket Plus expire somehow?

Posted by: i3onk

actually yes. if you click the sbp icon on the top left of the app it will open the setting menu. go to tools and registration. will tell you how much time you have left on the trial. you get 15 days total from first run. it will also tell you how to register it. I love sbp pocket plus. its a great app.

Hey i3onk -- maybe I missed this -- but I've been wondering in general how the SBP tools compare to SBSH. I've read lots of discussions about this, and find people on both sides of the issue. I had to choose early on, and opted for PocketBreeze, ContactBreeze and iLauncher from SBSH, and I'm using Wisbar Advance 2 to skin and manage the desktop and taskbar.

Also wondering how Wisbar Advance Desktop (WAD) compares to my combo of PocketBreeze and iLauncher.

I *really* don't want to take out more time to uninstall apps, download and install trials of all the others, etc, although I realize that's the best way to get to know them all. But this whole process really gets time consuming, especially if you opt for skinning the apps after you get them installed and configured.

I'm especially curious about features, stability and overall performance on the phone. My combo of WA2, PocketBreeze, ContactBreeze and iLauncher along with some slick matched skins looks great and provides loads of features. I just suspect that the phone is somewhat bogged down by all of them, and I'm wondering about alternatives.

Any thoughts / insights appreciated.

I currently use pocket breeze and contact breeze also. therason I chose sbp pocket plus over the ilauncher was sbp offers you more items to add to your tabs, as well as letting you add your own. ilauncher seamed a little bit confusing when it came to this. There was only a couple of things that ilauncher had that sbp doesn't. it has the vertical tabs which while very cool, only allows you 3 tabs. also when setting up web shortcuts on a tab it stays in the favorites folder after adding each shortcut. sbp actually makes you choose windows>favorites again. which is a bit time consuming because it takes a little while to load the windows folder.
As far as the skinning, I don't know if it will work with the sbp. all I can suggest is try it out. no need to uninstall I launcher to do this though. just remove it from your today screen. I didn't notice any power consumption difference in the two myself, but I didn't really do a whole lot of testing with that.
Its all trial and error man. I think I have gone through 4 hard resets to finally get the apps and things I like to run. now I just need to register the ones I like.

I thought I got away with one, touph to catch that. I have the features from Spb to get better idea of the power of this.

Your so very right about having to do 2- or 3 hard resets to get the applictions u wanted to cooperate, in the order that would work best, unless your lucky. But once u get it, it's great. That's why I needed a serious bckup utility like Spb cause realistically, I thought I could get away without having one on the MDA. Let me ask you somethig, cause I may or may not try it depending on your answer. If you had to do a hard/cold boot, would the self extracting file from Spb Backup restore everything, including all your software that was on the ROM. Cause the backup file for me is a little under 13MB, I know my software on ROM has to be atleast 30MB, maybe it's compressed. So the question is simply, if you had to do a cold boot, away from hotsync, would the backup file (Spb) restore you completely?

[QUOTE=jonazen]Maddog -
- PocketZenPhone - as I mentioned earlier, this is an excellent phone profile manager - very highly recommended.

I got to stop buying stuff for the MDA, but man so many goodies out there. Hey the PocketZenPhone may be another thing I need. Just wanted to ask you, can you set up profiles with this to answer using different music/tones from different callers. For example, I would like to have a specific ring sound for my family members, to differentiate that from business calls, and even other grups of callers?

Also did you buy ur's or is it freeware? http://www.freewareppc.com/communic...tzenphone.shtml

Or http://zendrui.free.fr/

I have been linking to some of these, which one did you get for the MDA? The actual link if possible?

Thanks

I might have gotten confused, maybe you referred me to Spb Backup. Very cool, do u use it, and if so, if you had to do a cold boot, would the self extract backup restore you completely away from hotsync? Anything u can share on that would be helpfull, cause I don't really want to cold boot just to see, but I don't want surprises if away from hotsync. I am that kind of person.

Long story short. Long time ago on a property, I had a company once put alarm system, but as you may know, or not know, if you use a home alarm company, and someone cuts ur phone lines, how does it call the monitoring service? So I had a company come out and configure a piece of electronic hardware, were if my phone line was cut, it would set off the alarm in home, even if isystem could not call out, cause it was not connected to cellular device. Well when guy was done with installation of this device, we enabled the system, then I went outside with him, and cut my own phone line (I knew how to fix it), and to this guys surprise, imagine my face it did not work. He did not do his job and jepourized my family life! Anyway, call me crazy, but it made the point and his manager was shocked! Needless to say, they were very concerned about this guy. Imagine the liability on that!

Well I downloaded the PocketZenPhone but the Freebie ver 4.5. Not sure what to do with it, since it does not seem to add sound to incoming calls. What about the v 5 or higher. What success have you had with this. Can u post.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do man. you do know that you can set individual ringtones for people right?

Posted by: jonazen

i3onk and MadDog -

PZP will not add sounds to incoming calls -- as a profile manager, it lets you set all the normal types of parameters you might expect for notifications of various events, such as:
- incoming call
- missed call
- new SMS
- new email
- new MMS
...and many more.

For the various types of events, you can choose among various combinations of notifications, such as:
- ring
- ascending ring
- ring once
- vibrate
- ring and vibrate
- vibrate then ring
- flash the screen
- flash the screen repeatedly
- flash the screen repeatedly at intervals (you can really stretch this out!)
...etc...

Of course for the "ring" you can chose whatever ring tone / sound file you want to use.

As far as assigning individual tones to specific people -- that's already built into the phone. You can also have it pop up a picture of the person when their call comes in (I'm pretty sure this works):

- get your picture of the person ready in a folder on the MDA (e.g., my pictures?)
- know which ringtone you'd like to use for this person
- edit your contact list, find the person you've got in mind and edit this contact
- review the various data fields - there's one for Photo, and there's also a place to select a ringtone to always use for this person.

All built-in!

I dig PZP but it did kill my GPRS functionality until I uninstalled it. That is, the latest beta did.

So, be careful. But I thought it was pretty decent.

Wow - nasty. curious though if it had to do with the way he sets defaults with PZP. When you first load it up, it applies whatever defaults he has set one of the profiles (don't remember which one he applies). I also found the default settings to be all wrong for me.

What I'm wondering is whether the default "mode" that it picked when you installed it happened to have the radioi turned off...that IS one of the options you can select for a profile (most commonly used in an "airplane" profile when you want the PDA but need the GPRS radio off).

So far I'm finding ver 6 beta 7 to be rock solid. I see some issues that people have reported with beta's 8 and 9, but I don't know how substantial the problems are. I think I'll hang out with beta 7 until I see more definitive info on later versions...

That tumb drive is a really good idea! I think I'll look into one. Your right I was looking at the wrong thing with that phone profile, when in front of me was exactly what I needed, the ring assignment to each contact built in to WM5, why did I not see this?

Well I like Spb pocket Plus, and I had to cold boot my MDA cause the PhoneZen 4.5 software screwed up my system. But the beautiy of this was, the self assurance that Spb Backup did it's job! I didnt skip a beat. I looked into the 2GB SD cards, I think MDA will handle even 4GB, but 2GB hard to find around town, except on eBay.

I also decided to buy another SD card and re thought out my plans for my software installation. I started by loading Tweak2k2 in ROM, cause it has a neat hack for WM5 NOT to delete your cab files. I realized everytime you hotsync and install something, all the cab files are in the program files/windows hotsync/ so I uploaded all my cab files to both cards. I decided to keep my music, possibly games, and up to date WM5 cab files on one card, and use the other card for daily usage and installations, etc. I only reloaded everything necessary for me to function with the device, leaving enough ROM storage for backups, so when I switch cards I can trasferr and have copies in both. I feel this will make me independent from needing a computer to restore my device anywhere in the World, cause frankly I find hotsync, for me anyway, seems unreliable. I have had to move my MDA to another computer, yet.

The key thing I got from Spb Backup's self extracting file, great idea, cause u don't need Spb Bacup installed to restore, in case of a hard boot, is once you have your PPC working the way u want, then do a full backup image. Because it backs up everything in ROM too. So I put in Flash ROM only the sotware I need to function, like MVC, BT SoundON, MemMaid, SK tools, Tweak2k2, Kilmist Registry Editor, Spb backup, wi-fi companion, and now Spb Pocket Plus. I configured eveything like rings, buttons, what ever, then did an image backup. I finally felt I took control, I am convinced, I don't need to rely on a computer to restore the MDA completely! I am having fun! Cause trial and error is the true way to knowledge! Now I feel free to try out some 3rd party stuff that may other wise screw up my system, but can restore in less then 15 minutes.

Also the neat thing about a miniSD cards, is they come with those little adapters for a regular SD slot. It works great, cause I can take my mini and use it in my wifes h6315 to load files to her iPaq storage. Too bad It can't be vise versa. Cause sometimes we transferr music to each other on the road, and if u ever tried sending a 6 MB song by beaming, forget it! She had a file about 47MB's that I needed. But her Flash Rom is smaller than the MDA, so it was impossible for me to insert my MiniSD and get the file, but it seemed like a good idea. Why can't they made a device with at least 512MB's Flash. Not sure, except that a miniSD is tiny, but that's with the cover for the real Flash Rom chip, so the chip must be very very tiny. Why can't they give us more Flash? I wonder if there is anything that can transferr large information between ppc's (not beam), Like cables from one ppc to another. Also is there any reason why two ppc's can't access each other via BT. If your trying to communciate with a BT headset near another PPC with BT technology, it sees that PPC?
Is that possible?

P.S. Your defenition of the rubbing alcahol and freezing is on target! It seems like the most rational view. of course... Alcahol can't freeze, but soaks up water, and freezer definately stops water for corrossion.

Random: Thank goodness for UPS's on computers, my power just went dead while on this board for 1 second, and all stayed on.

I think the only thing BT is good for as far as two devices, is to transfer files. Resco file explorer actually has a menu option to send to a BT recipient. click and hold on a file, hit send to then BT recipient, then it starts detecting for another BT device. I send ringtones at work with this process all the time. As far as using BT as a little network device to connect two PPC's Im not sure, you may need to additional software for that.
Looks like I am going to have to get SBP backup if you like it that much. Having issues with contact breeze and some other issues with a couple reg tweaks I did and had to hard reset again. Takes me about an hour to get everything on my MDA and most of the settings setup before going into my voice dialing recordings and such.

Re: issues with ContactBreeze -- I seem to have had some weird behavior with PocketBreeze and/or ContactBreeze. Can't tell yet which program seems to be at fault, or if it's something else. ContactBreeze seems to have disappeared on me a couple of days ago, and yesterday, PocketBreeze seems to have turned itself off -- couldn't bring it back until I did a soft reset, and then, happily, it reappeared. But I can't imagine why it turned itself off??? Weird.

Seems that life in the WM5 world is still a bit on the flakey side...

Frustrating - hopefully you'll get an answer soon. If so - please share back here. I'm still wondering if I chose the right tools. I'm finding now with Voice Command that I almost never have to go into my contacts list -- and I can just say something like "show John Doe" to have Voice Command open up the appropriate contact in WM5's own contact manager, or "call John Doe at work" to make a call immediately, never even touching the phone. I may not really need the overhead that something like ContactBreeze adds -- I noticed, for instance, that it takes quite a while when it first loads my contacts from pocket outlook, and one of the "tweaks" the ContactBreeze allows you to set determines when it does this load - 3 options as I recall, something to the effect of "once at startup", "dynamically" and one other -- they recognize that there's a tradeoff between responsiveness when you're using the app and the desire to kept ContactBreeze up to date if you make changes during the day.

Anyway - with voice command, I wonder if I really need contactbreeze at all now.

Also - I like Wisbar Advance...but it may also turn out to be overkill. Jury's still out so far on that. I need a task manager for switching and really exiting apps (instead of just minimizing), I like having an easily accessible battery and memory meter, and it's nice to be able to skin the task bar. Just not sure if I can't accomplish all this using less resources, so I can get back some of the responsiveness of the device with nothing installed...

Just wanted to get a sanity check to make sure I'm doing this right and to confirm/deny if Salt Lake City is one of the locations where the proxy port doesn't work anymore.

I've been dickering with T-Zones and my MDA since I got it yesterday. No luck so far on internet, but I've gotten POP3 Gmail to work (dont' know if the two are related).

Can I get feedback to make sure I'm doing it correctly. I've read the first couple of pages, with the setups and no luck so far. However, that being said, I've been screwing around with the configs so much I'm not sure what's what anymore.

You know that Spb Pocket Plus really works very nicely. And I downloaded it by accident, thinking it was Spb Backup. I, like you, have come to the crossroads that too many utility/skins apps on this device can simply bog down the unit. How they are installed can also contribute to slowness of device. For example, I had Spb plus loaded and for reasons not sure, after any soft reset the icons would stay solid for a while, before allowing me to use them, but all else would work. When I started to reload everything using the technique I stated in previous post, Spb works great, and my system is functioning better. What I really like about Spb Plus, is you can costomize the tabs with icons you really use daily, right on the desktop. If you are using applications, you can always go to the today screen, open up something else, back to today screen, and click on icon for previous app, and you feel your really multitasking. I have looked at your applications after u posted them, and for the most part, I am feeling content with what I got, cause everything is working good, and the reviews on these applications, like Spb plus are excellent. But u got to do what makes u happy, right?

On another note. It is interesting the detail that went into the MDA, really! I use it for exercise in mornings (MP3). One of the features it has, as you know, is the little lock on the today screen. Well at first I was not sure what to use this for, sort of felt useless to me. So I removed it several times, then left it alone ather times. But the MDA has interesting features, like if you are using Windows Media, the buttons accomodate it. For example, the buttons between the phone lights, the left and right buttons control the next song, the middle controls pause. I love the idea that in different modes, the buttons offer different features, like for Media. So I excercise using Windows Media MP3, and was not sure what kept changing my songs, until I discovered this. Of course it became a pain in the butt, till I used the little lock icon. Cause I carry the MDA in a special pouch while exercising, and anything pressing against these buttons while in Media, will change the music, pause, etc. This was driving me nuts, but today I discovered that running Windows Media and playing ur favorite music in shuffle, then locking the device, you can't press the buttons, so it resolved that issue. The other neat thing is, if you lock it, MSVoicecommand still works on the assigned button. Another good idea. I don't know about u guys, but sometimes weird things happens to my MDA, like the phone dialer pops up, or Spb backup kicks in. Almost like something takes over the device, but it's only cause something was pressed by accident, especially my leather case, it's a tite fit and anything can happen with buttons. Good to know these little things, cause it makes ur life happy!

I had the same problem with contact breeze. I had to completely un-install and then install the latest version and that worked perfectly.

I don't know if my reply will help u in anyway, but I was in networking for many moons, and one fact I always came across, is people trying to re configure what was probably configured for u in the first place. I'm not saying you should not tinker with the settings, but if ur not sure what ur doing, and I don't know if u ar or not, so pls don't take offense, u can change something, and it will cause u to have to cold boot device, just to get it back to default. If your trying to access a work network try talking to an admin, cause one thing I know about admins, they sometimes use personal and rational configuration ideas that even the best of us have to figure out. I hated walking into a company with a large network, just after they fired some guy, cause it was a hostile sitution, until I took rational and logical control. Can u talk to ur admin on ur work network? Yes, networking is complicated, especially if ur accessing a router with WEP, and wirless mac filtering, but for the most part, most of the time we are not. Now if you drive up to my house, and park outside, and try to get into my network, you will come across WAP encrypted, and MAC filtering, so I am almost impossible to crack. Cause u can also hide ur SSID, and people around you, unless they are really good, will not even know ur there. My neighbor on the other hand, uses unencrypted wireless, and doen's care, I guess. But for the most part, unless your paying for T-Zones, most FREE public domains assign u an IP based on their simple setup as a DHCP wireless router. So ur MDA should easily see these connections, and get access, unless ur not getting an IP assigned. Just because ur near a router, does not guarantee the IP.

I remember setting up WinProxy server once in my home using cable modem, back when broadband was new in California. I racked my brain trying to figure this out, and a friend did it in ten minutes. The thing was I was getting too complicated with it, in the end it was not so hard to accomplish, cause most of the settings were set in default to work for 90% of the users, and DHCP assigned the addresses. All I needed was to NIC cards, one connected to the modem, the other connected to my HUB. Just making a friendly point. It's been a while since I setup a proxy server, but can remember the port was important to know, ea., 8020.

That is the reason why I bought wi-fi companion for the MDA. http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=20127 . Because the utilties built into the MDA by the OS are simply not acceptable to me. Again you can be very close to a wireless network router, and be getting clearly a great reception and not be getting online. The reason maybe, the router is not assigning u an IP address. This is very apparent with wi-fi companion, and easy to check. When I am near hot spot, whether it's a T-Zone or, the library, which I was at ealier. The first thing I do is turn on my Wi-Fi (comm mgr), next thing I do makes all the difference in the world to me, immediately wi-fi companion, on the top shows icon connection. I then click on wi-fi companion, and see whats going on with this connection, what kind of signal am I getting, can I see an actual IP assigned to me. Then I know I am trully on the the net. This is a painless process in a very nice graphics interphase. Using built in stuff with the OS is not a painless process.

Also when accessing a Hot Spot from T-Mobile, you really need to do nothing, if you verified the above (reception,ip assignment), cause as soon as you click on your browwer, for me Opera http://www.opera.com/ is the best in the industry, right away you get a msg from T-mobile, either u better have account, login, key, etc., or a credit card, or if it's a promotional weekend, you get an email with a key for FREE access.

The only other thing that sometimes may screw u up is, in the settings area, where you enter the WEP information, if u need to input a key, or get it assigned by a routher, there is a tab called 802.1x which should not be checked, unless u need this, and you would probably know. That has kept me from accessing some networks. If all else fails, I would cold boot my device, cause u could be kicking urself from here to enternity and not find the solution, cause something went wrong, or ur system is defective, I hope not. Cause most of the time in my life, when I rack my brain with anything on a computer, chances are, something is phisically wrong/bad/corrupted.

However, u are getting POP3 account to work with Gmail that tells me that ur getting access to the interenet one way or the other, or POP3 would not connect to a mail server. In trouble shooting this would be a good sign!

Good Luck

I appreciate the comments, however after reading your post, I think you're confusing my question, which has to do with T-Zones/GPRS/Getting web pages in PIE without having to sign up for the $29.99 plan, which many have done with what you're talking about, which is WiFi and getting online, which is a completely separate issue.

T-Zones GPRS as configured out of the box was not working and hence the dickering. I consider myself very savy with networks, configurations, etc in general (this is my 3rd WM5 PPC based PDA that I've owned), however, I've never had the pleasure of trying to deal with the GPRS portion with standalone PDA's.

I just wanted to confirm that my settings were A) correct (and if not, what I needed to change) and B) that proxy port blocking isn't in effect in Salt Lake.

Interesting. I really am NOT looking forward to a hard reset and reinstall cycle...but I may eventually give in and try configuring this with a few different apps. I did a few days of research before settling on the items I installed -- reviews were good, comparisons with the competition were good, and they looked like they had the functionality I wanted. But I really do think I've overburdened the MDA now. It's not really bad, but I think I'm pushing it to the brink of being too sluggish.

What I don't know is which of the apps -- and which combination of apps -- really causes the drag on the system. Is it Wisbar? or PocketBreeze? ContactBreeze or iLauncher? I know that MS Voice Command slows down the initial boot up -- but that generally doesn't happen during the day, and I really don't want to think of doing without Voice Command, so that's non-negotiable.

Re: looks and skinning - if it turns out that other apps are better for what I'm doing, or if Wisbar is really putting a drag on the system, I can always live with a good WM5 theme to get a nicer look.

Not sure what I'm going to do about this...enjoying the MDA, but I know I can get it configured better...

Its all trial and error, like i said before man. Just have to play around till you get the configuration that you want. I know what apps I want to use and I have numerous themes that I have picked up from a couple websites for free.

http://www.ppc4you.com/themes/
and
http://www.pdagold.com/themes/list.asp?tp=1

I just found today that if you just use the icons on your sbp pocket instead of naming them, you can fit more tabs on the screen. That may be one thing that is slightly bogging down my system. I need to see if having IBM java with google local installed is slowing it down, as well as flash for PPC.
I have heard that changing to a different ROM can actually speed up the device alot, but I dont think im ready to try anything like that on my MDA quite yet. Would hate to not be able to go back to the original ROM.
I think what I am going to do nwo that I have the 2G minisd, is try installing some of my apps on my card. Freeing up some device memory shoudl help with the slwodown a little bit at least. I dont think the flash has done anything since i installed it but sit there so I think I am going to just uninstall that all together.
I also wish that there was a tabbed internet browser for WM5. Would love to be able to do things like go to atom films and watch some of the movies and such things like that. Not to mention just opening multiple sites at once.

Does it have both vertical and horizontal images? Also - does it come with images for the call history screen?

Just DL'd and installed it. I like it ALOT. Definatley ALOT easier to dial with. I think I will keep this one. Thanx for the share tonkabui. Now that I have it, Ill look into the skins thing and let you know what I figure out.

Well I have installed everything I had installed to my MDA onto my minisd. Only things I kept on the device is SBP pocket plus and Pocketbreeze. I have also deleted most of my themes(I had about 15 on the device) and left just the three that came with the MDA(it wont let me delete themes on the rom) and one other one that I added afterwards. It seams to have sped it up a bit. Apps open up faster, but the slow part is going back to the today screen. I think that is due to pocketbreeze, and SBP pocket plus with all of the icons on it.
I havnt tested the speed of most of the apps I just put on my card, but I do install my games on my card and they have always seamed to run pretty good to me. That was with my 256 60x minisd. The new one being a 2G 120x i think they will run just fine.
My storage went from 8m to a little over 18.5M.

On a seperate note, if anyone is ever needing a screenshot of their MDA

http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=552

this is what I use. You have to be connected to activesync for it to work though. I am still looking for a standalone screenshot app that can be done without being connected to activesync.

Yeah when I found it I posted it there but be warned of the uninstall of this for it will delete the default one. Though this didn't happen to me, if you read that topic there is someone there who claims otherwise.

Yeah Unfortunatly I didnt read that part until I had already installed it. Lucily I like it and dont have to worry about it right now. HEHE.

Here's a nice free screencapture utility - Pocket Screen Capture v1.0 - totally free, and works quite well. Here's an example:

Part of what probably slows down this guy is the pretty set of skins. Eats up a fair amount of memory with images that have to get moved around for Wisbar Advance 2, PocketBreeze & ContactBreeze, iLauncher and the WM5 theme. iLauncher is also using an optional set of icons, and the PZP today plugin (just below the date bar, which is below the task bar) is also skinned.

Pretty, powerful...but I need to rethink all this...

Posted by: i3onk

thats a damn nice looking screen though. Thats wisbar that did that?

Well after everyone talking about it I had to check it out for myself. I went and DL'd wisbar. Guess its going to take me a few days of playing with this thing to get the jist of it. I put it on my minisd so hopefully it wont slow me down too much. Looks like it is a little bit though already

Loads of options with Wisbar, and lots of neat functions. Very appealing -- I'm just really hoping it's not too heavy for the MDA. Several excellent skins available for Wisbar (and PocketBreeze as well). Easy to find via google.

I haven't tried overclocking yet -- I'm considering giving it a try, as many people report that it improves performance with only a tiny hit on battery life. Also -- re battery life. Wow -- since upgrading to 2.17 ROM and tweaking my backlight settings, and also being more aware of when I have my BT and WiFi radios on or off, I'm doing MUCH better. Example: today was an easy day. I worked at my home office until about 9:30am, unplugged my MDA from the ISB cable and headed out for a meeting. Made perhaps six or seven calls today, most were less than 10 minutes, and 2 were closer to 20 minutes. I answered 3 calls as well and stayed on for perhaps 10 to 15 mins for each of these. I woke the phone up to change profiles 6 or 7 times today - at least. Consulted my calendar a couple of times also. Anyway - here I am at 11:40pm: phone unplugged for 14 hours, and although it hasn't be heavy phone use, it was typical for me. I just checked, and was blown away to see my main battery at 92%.

Major reasons for the improvment:
- ONLY have BT and WiFi on when I'm using them
- 2.17 ROM
- Changed backlight timout to 1 minute when I'm running on the battey
- Put the phone to "sleep" after 3 minutes of inactivity

Amazing...never expected to see the battery hold this much charge after 14 hours.

Indeed it is. There are other colors posted there but I'm not sure how to get them to work. I'll be messing around with them tomorrow and see if I can get one that looks kool

Where did you get the ROM? is it a T-mobile ROM of someone else make it? Once I get it I may need a walk through on installing it.

One of the guys who frequents xda-developers.com put it together. If you go over there, you'll find a great info resource focused specifically on the various "XDA" devices made by HTC. Loads of detailed info, downloads, etc.

You'll also find a few hard-core developers and firmware experts there as well. Very helpful people. Excellent resource overall.

Is there any trick to installing programs onto the miniSD card (something I have to download to do it) or do I just copy the cab files to the card and install from there?

Posted by: i3onk

I am a little leary flashing with a non tmobile release. Would hate to not be able to go back to the original ROM, and void my warranty at the same time.

If you have your card plugged in when you go to install apps, you will get a choice of weather to install to your device or storage card. Choose storage card and install. I have noticed a couple times that it may tell you installation unsuccesfull. If it does that, just try it again. That usually handles it for me.

You have to drag and drop the cab file to your card or device before you can install. You can use activesync to do this or a card reader, just remember the folder you drop it into and then use file explorer on your device to find it. I always use the /temp folder on the device since it is very easy to find imo.

Then use the steps that ^ provided for installation.

i3onk -- I hesitated and agonized over this for 2 or 3 days, and must have read dozens of posts about it.

One of the things you can do is to back up your current firmware to your miniSD card, and also keep a copy of the full T-Mobile distribution -- same as the one on your phone -- on your PC ready to fall back to.

You CAN go back to the original ROM. So far, with all the posts I've read from dozens of people who have done this, the only issues seem to happen once in a great while when people don't take full precautions. Even then, it seems that they can recover by following a more conservative route on the second try (e.g., remove the miniSD, remove the battery, remove the SIM, replace the battery, use hardware buttons to put phone in boot loader mode, use separate CID Unlocker, reflash with stock ROM, reflash with custom ROM). Seems that 99% of the time such a complex process is NOT needed at all -- but for those few who ran into trouble, this kind of process DID let them recover.

The ONLY people I'm aware of who might have more trouble did not CID unlock first. When you attempt to load one company's distribution on another company's branded hardware, CID locking is designed to block this based on the company code. Just their little way of trying to keep customers using the branded version of the firmware. Forcing a ROM overwrite from one company's branded firmware to another company's branded hardware without CID unlocking is asking for disaster. But this is totally unnecessary if you simply make sure to ACCEPT the offer to CID unlock your phone as the first step.

I really was worried about doing this to my MDA, but after the fact, I'm really glad I went ahead and did it. It was SO quick and painless, and the phone simply works better now.

Well Im going to take a little more time to think about it.

Can't argue that -- good idea. I really worked through all the scenarios in my head before I did it, and I knew I'd feel like a complete jerk if I bricked my MDA -- knew that I'd go through all the wailing, teeth-gnashing, etc, wondering why I did something when I knew I shouldn't have, etc, etc. But after reading the 2.17 thread over at xda-developers.com thoroughly - including the frantic wet-the-pants post followed over the next couple of hours by the happy resolutions - I finally decided that if I prepped everything properly, it would be ok, and I could always fall back to the shipping ROM if necessary.

In the end, though, you're right - YOU have to be 100% comfortable with it and ready to live with the outcome (ugh!). Nobody else is taking that risk for you...

Let me know if you have any questions about the whole thing...

Has anyone tried doing a full backup AFTER they install Sbp Pocket Plus? I made backups before installing Sbp Pocket Plus. Then I installed Network Browswer, AOL for PPC, and Spb Pocket Plus. I then did a full backup again, naming it full2.exe, when backup was completed I got a log msg "Unable to read from file Windows/lic/lsoma.db" (a hidden file). At first I thought nothing of it, but curiousity got the best of me and I restored that self extract backup created by Spb Backup, after the reset, things were not the same. My MS VoiceMail would not load, plus other weird popup windows.

Anyway make long story short, I went back to my good full backup, before those 3 apps were installed, and reloaded ONLY Spb Pocket Plus again, then did another Full backup, in hope to eliminate which one of those three apps was causing that msg to be logged. It's Spb Pocket PC! I am not sure if doing a full backup with Spb Pocket Plus loaded is a good quality backup. Something is weird with this app and the hidden file Isoma.db. Not sure what this file serves, but Thought u guys who use Sps Pocket Plus, which I love now, should know. I tried this twice with Spb Pocket Plus alone, and both times it came up with same logged file and msg.

Now it doesn't seem to effect the system, and this file seems o.k., in the windows/lic folder, but after you run the self extract backup file, the system did not completely work 100% without some issues after reset.

Has anyone tried this? I did a search for this on google came up with only one link, which mentions this file as a fix, was in a hurry. Who knows maybe I downloaded and registered the beta version.

Since I already have Wisbar Advance 2, I was wondering about wisbar advance desktop -- looks like it might cover a lot of the territory that pocketplus and/or ilauncher cover. Tough to match these all against each other, as it isn't a 1-to-1 feature by feature match.

My personal philosophy is using .cab files to install to MDA, insted of the PC install versions. I like developers who give u the options to download either one. I choose .cab files, cause I can keep them on my MiniSD if needed to load later away from pc. Even if I have to use a PC install version, I normally go to the Program Files/Microsoft ActiveSync/ and move the .cab file over to the Card. You never know when u will need to install one from the MDA itself. I find total indepence with .cab files. Today I had to cold boot device, and my backup took care of most of it, and I had to install some cab files, never used a table top pc, and was up and running in no time.

I love the Spb Pocket Plus!! It's a new little world, and I believe that's all I will need. I think I got everything I want loaded on this thing. As far as that weird backup, not sure, I posted a question on their board in ref. What version Spb Backup do u have? I have v 1.1.1 Build 2021.

I know this may be nothing big, but I believe there is some relation with backup software and that Isoma.db, cause on the Sprite board (http://spritesoftware.com), which is another popular Data Loss developer for mobile devices, they mention in ref to their new beta, fixes: "no lsoma.db warnings on backup" . Will see.

I picked up the Smartphone & Pocket PC Mag today, great issue. It had promo page on the Spb Pocket Plus as the World's best seeling software for second year in a row. Also 50% off for readers of mag on Spb Finance 2.0 Promotion code 11PPCM valid for 4 weeks. Not sure if anything else applies for this. But I will look

Why do u need this CID unlocking? I had a guy send me personal msg asking tech questions, and one thing he wants to do is this CID unlock. I wasn't sure what this was, but curiosity is my nature. I would rather feel stupid for 5 minutes asking a dumb question, than live a life time of ignorance.

Thanks for any info on this topic.

CID Unlock basically unlocks the phone so you can put someone elses ROM on it. T-mobile and other cell companies dont like you doing thast. They like their proprietary software. CID Unlock allows you to change the ROM and not have any issues with the phone stopping it. At least thats what I get out of evrything I have read.

I think Im going to pick up a copy of that mag you mentioned.

On anotehr note, here is a little somethign I came across today. Looks pretty neat. Creating the shortcuts seams a litt,le tedious but definatly worth the trouble I think. I have installed it and it works just need to decide what I want to add to it, and see if it helps sp[eed up my device or slow it down more.

Ok I found out how to add the skins to the pad. I liked the gray ones so I used them. Copy all of the images for the gray dialpad and paste them into your windows directory. Thats it, all there is to it.

What would the reason be why someone would want to change the ROM on their phone? Is there a better working version? Cause this guy sent me links to discussions about it, so it seems others are changing it. Weird? What do u think?

What version of Spb Bckup do u have? I have v 1.1.1. Is that ur version too?

same version as you man

and changing the rom basically give you other options that tmobile didnt include and removes some of the ones they did. The biggest benifit though is improved operation. faster, less memory leakage, less battery drain. things such as this.

Still not sure if I want to do this or just wait forever until tmobile releases their RoM upgrade.

Maddog - just as i3onk said -- better battery life, better WiFi (more sensitive, picks up WLAN's faster and connects faster), better radio, faster operation in general, less memory leaks, more stable.

Almost forgot - for those using Exchange Server at work, this also has the AKU2 update and will work with the Exchange Server push email update (don't remember what that's called).

Ok I have a question for you guys. ANyone know how to go about creating icons for a WM5 device or finding them within dll files?

Posted by: tonkabui

does anyone know how to prevent activesync from just starting on its own? it's a battery hog when it randomly turns on.

Posted by: i3onk

Sorry man I have been wondering that myself. Still havnt figured it out

On another note though. Here's a screenshot of my today screen with the traylauncher running and full of shortcuts. I think I like it. Seams like it slows my reboot down a bit though. Doesnt seam to slow down anything else though. I now have 3 less tabs on my Pocket plus. I added a few things to the start menu that i have found I use but not enough to warrant putting them onto the tray launcher. Im still working on a couple of the icons.

Sorry about the small size of the image. Damn forums would only let me upload a 14.6K file. they need to bump that up to about 25K.

NM removed it and hosted the pic on my photobucket account. This link is to a full size image now

Now that I have that installed and setup the way I want (with exception to the two icons) Im going to do a backup then try installing agile messenger. Im really sick of the inconsistency of MSN and Yahoo connections on the bundled IM software.

Well just broke down and ordered this today.

http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...Product_Count=5

Sick of plugging and unplugging the USB cable in. Think this might make it a bit easier to connect and see the screen when I am plugged in.

Posted by: i3onk

Well I think Im going to stick with Agile messenger for now. No more connecting to my IM's one at a time, and if there is a connection problem it reconnects by itself until ity completes the conenction. I have had it totally disconnect on me a couple of time (not during a chat) and it reconnects itself right away. It also has a nice and small today area that says how many friends online and when you have an IM. Not to mention, all my buddies on one list instead of having to open each one to see who is on.

Forgive me for being the perpetual skeptic ... but if the cradle doesn't connect to the MDA via the USB port, how DOES it connect? I don't see any other connectors or contacts that the cradle might use. Am I missing something? Or (he says with a sinister pause).....could it be that the photo of the cradle is missing something? Such as the little detail of a plug on the right side of the picture, connecting the cradle with the USB port on the MDA?

I hope I'm wrong, but...

Lol I thought that too when I first looked at the picture. If you look closely you can see that the MDA is recessed into the cradle. The mini USB connector is set into the recession of the cradle. so the MDA just slides into the cradle and plugs into the mini USB. I know the photo is a bit missleading, but im pretty sure that is the way it works. IT BETTER BE or im gonna have some issues with these poeple lol.

Sounds good to me...please let me know how they really do it. If it really is recessed and you slide the MDA in from the left to the right, that's fine - and I probably want one of these guys for myself. Let me know please!

That's exactly how it works. The mini USB male connector is at the end of the recessed portion. You just slide your phone in the recessed portion and they fit together nicely. Before u guys order from the online site in the prior post (http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Me...Product_Count=5), I got mine off eBay (same exact item) shipped for $16.95 ($10.00 plus $6.95 S/H) -- just search for MDA desktop charger or something like that.

I do like the charger very much, particularly the bundled stylus and the way it lays at an angle and allows for keyboard access -- very efficient and productive design.

Sorry for the picture quality, I severely cropped it to accomodate HF picture size requirements, but I think you can get the point. The glows blue while mounted in the case -- it is longer, again, picture truncated so the stylus got chopped in the process.

I looked at the Versacharger for my MDA, along with (maybe) the airplane charger in case I want to watch something or play some games on it mid-flight, but it states that it's only for 100V - 220V. Is that within Europe's voltage range? I guess this won't work in the UK either as that's 240V. Would I have to get something like this instead? This one states 110 to 240 (which seems to give me more options, but does not have the car charger or plane charger).

It just seems strange that it might not work in the UK as they have the UK plug in the international charger kit for the Versacharger (but then state that it must range from 100 -220...which seems to mean I could just plug it into any ol' outlet).

They also have the wall charger at boxwave which doesn't seem to have the same stipulations as the versacharger.

I also didn't know whether you had to purchase the directsync/minisynce for them as we have a USB cord and that seems like that is all the "sync" cables are.

Argh! I guess if anyone has had any luck with chargers, let me know

Exactly, except I ordered mine from someone who is U.S. based so it shipped from California and I had it in less than a week.

The only problem I see with having the AA baterypack charger is carrying it around. This is why I bought the spare battery instead. Hold a charge for almost two weeks and I can fit it in the little change pocket in my pants without bothering me a bit. Battery gets too low, just pull it out of my pocket, switch and away I go. Can charge them both when i get back home.

True, but I need the charger when I am in-flight. I fly coast-to-coast and internationally a lot, so having a spare MDA battery won't cut it, unless I have 2 spares. With the AA charger, at least I can carry multiple AA batteries and swap it in the charger.

2 problems w/ Internet : Anybody have ideas?

Internet Explorer Part A – When I use internet explorer w/ Edge, I find 2 issues. First , Yahoo says “I am currently using Internet Explorer 4.0. For the best experience using Yahoo, we recommend that you upgrade to the latest version.” So, what do I do? Is it really able to run on my MDA? Or do I use something like OPERA which I am not familiar with?

Internet Explorer Part B – When I use internet explorer w/ Edge, I will go to a website. It will appear to start downloading the information from the website as the “bar of progress” on the bottom of the screen appears to be completed. Then, when it appears that everything has been downloaded, nothing appears on my screen. It doesn’t ask me if it is a trusted website or anything. So, I don’t think it is a security issue. Any ideas?

I know someone has probablly asked but, what's the best AIM client for the MDA. i (try to) use OZ, but it's terrible!

Well Just got the new version of cantact breeze and now my today screen is complete. I have it just the way I like it.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d.../TodayFinal.jpg

Finally figured out how to make and add my own icons to the device as well. Makes it alot easier to choose the webpages I want from the shortcuts I made.

Nice i3onk. I was going to ask you what #Melissa# gets you...thinking momentarily that it was a GSM code that I didn't know about (to connect to the "Melissa Service Center"? Not going there... ). But then I catch myself - this is so Melissa sorts to the top of the list, yes?

Anyway - nice desktop.

Posted by: i3onk

LOL Yeah. Melissa is my GF. Makes it easier to text and call her. As you know when you start scroling down your contacts list it comes up with the alphabet in the middle of the screen to make it easier to get to a contact. Well, it ALWAYS came up about 3 contacts away from her, so I figured that was the easiest way to go.
I love the tray launch app, helped me clean up the desktop and clear out some of my SBP tabs. I think I am just going to use SBP pocket plus for games and web favorites now. Everything else is either on tray launch or my start menu.

A. You can do a tweak to spoof IE6; try Tweaks2K2. I haven't found any of the alternative browsers that compelling. Since I did the ROM update, IE seems to work better!

B. Try scrolling down. Sometimes it is a spacer that appears in the wrong place when the page is reformatted to fit the screen.

Yes, i have been running it since it was released. But i believe it is the Alpha version that is out. Runs very well although google talk does not auto sign in for some reason you have to login to it once your other accounts are signed on but other than that works well for me.

Posted by: Jay Raptor

Yep, seems to work just the same as the alpha version that has been out. Still wish it had the ability to view away messages. I have to sign on to AIM 2.0 (available for free on the UK AIM site) to view away messages.

agreed, that would be nice...also icons at least to see if someone is mobile or not would be nice too

Hey A N T H 0 N Y…. I feel like my grandmother in Brooklyn. Anthony from Tampa Florida. I have NOT abandoned you; I simply can’t get on this board, as MadDogX007. The board will not email me to a new address so that I can re-activate my account! I have emailed Howard several times, but this guy just doesn’t seem to get emails or something. I had to start new login, and it took HOFO 3 days to let me activate. So I have been hanging out on XDA-Developers forum, which will lead me to my next post just for you buddy. So for now on this board Maddogx007 is JVCX007. Right me buddy! Hey nice meeting Jonazen at XDA too! Jonazen also tried emailing Howard for me.. Thanks man!

I had a serious frustration today with BT and almost crushed it out of anger! I was at mall and came out to a flat tire on my truck. After 8 years of driving this truck, my last new truck, I never had a flat. I went to remove the spare, and realized my electronics were covering the concoction that releases the tire beneath vehicle. I realized I had all the tools, but the wrong ones. I needed a Philips screwdriver to remove electronics to get to this concoction, I did not have one. I needed to remove the big tire; my tire lug wrench was for original factory tires. What a mess! My wife in truck, my daughter needing to get picked up at school. I walked to Sears, never bought a tool from them and they had no universal wrench ???? In meantime communication between my wife, daughter, and a friend to HELP us was falling apart. My Motorola H700 BT was not cooperating, reception was lousy, pressing the connect button once for hold, while they were trying to call me, would not work. Man the only thing that worked well was my MDA, and between clicking BT SoundOn, MVC, game kept popping up for no reason, keeping me from using these things correctly, man I got to a moment where I almost lost it, and crushed the BT headset, and just used the MDA as smart phone. I am going to change my BT period, to others that work based on other forum discussions, and works with MSVC too. I will give this one to my son in law, he is looking at BT phones, he,he,he,he….

AKA MaddogX007 who hopes to get his rights back on HOFO one day!

To Anthony or all those risk takers out there....

Well I upgraded the MDA ROM to the T-Mobile USA 2.17 (Custom). After countless hours of hanging around the xda-developers forum, getting more frustrated, I decided to stop reading and take the plunge. I am happy to report that this was a very successful procedure. You can get very confused reading about this, cause some posts are old; ftp sites have broken links, etc. For those of us who like hacking these devices, this is like the ultimate hack! Here is one of the best articles I have come across in reference to this upgrade; the guy says it all in a nutshell! Follow all the trail of links and you will come across the files necessary. Keep in mind to download any file u will need to login.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44631

Frankly I took the easy lazy road! I downloaded RUU_Prodigy_2170702_217_20710_TMO_US.exe. I chose to unlocked MDA, and upgraded ROM all in one easy process. It took a whole 10 minutes. I then disconnected USB, and because I keep all my .cab files on my SD card, walked away from PC to watch news and continued installing my apps. I DID NOT restore my FULL backups from Spb Backup, since I am not sure what upgrade changed to the Windows folder. As a matter of fact for long reason, I did try this later, and the MdA would not load properly. When ur happy with all ur apps loaded make new backups. I don’t have a contract with T-Mobile, and if they ever get on my nerves, I will switch providers, since I am now an unlocked puppy. But I do like T-Mobile! I can always run aWizard, and replace the logo. CID unlocking does not affect your ROM upgrade, it uses a different chip. Bottom line! If you don’t unlock FIRST you will not be able to complete this upgrade. Or you can always wait for the T-Mobile version sometime this life.

Some quick observations: There is another ROM upgrade available RUU_Prodigy_1060204_105_11210_TMO_UK_Ship, but why would you want to use a lower version. The time is no longer on the top bar, but on the Today screen top right corner. The Comm. Mgr. adds three new buttons, I think push mail, speaker, and another Data Connect or something. I think it for Edge/Gprs. However the push mail icon seems in active. The MDA boots a bit faster (nice), the device works a bit faster (nice), I think I got a tiny more RAM, and designer of this ROM chose not to include some applications like the AOL text messenger, Hot Spots icon, Yahoo, etc, which does not affect me, since I use the FREE AOL PPC 2.0, Hot Spots are easily accessed anyway via web browser, but you may feel different. I did notice a couple new applications, they included, like Total Commander, really nice advanced file explorer for with zip capabilities http://www.ghisler.com/ and MidLet manager which allows you to play Java games and apps on Windows Mobile. http://midlet.org/index2.jsp

I read somewhere that the 2.17 version ads stereo with BT, not sure what this means, but wonder why they put a speaker icon in the comm. Mgr, cause my MSVoiceCommand still gives same BT issues, but glad I got BT SoundON utility. I am convinced the MVC is related to my BT. But I also heard contradicting posts that they left the Stereo BT out on the US ROM version. Why? Who the heck knows? The only thing bugging me, my Wi-Fi is not giving me proper signal strength readings, as it used to, but I can live with that, since it’s no affecting my quick access. Hopefully I can fix this.

Again if you want the zip file with all these utitlies, and a readme directly from the RUU, post me a msg here. I will post my FTP site with file.

Otherwise Good Luck!

I got msg from Spb backup support. it seems that little hidden file lsoma.db the one Spb backup logged on me, is a known bug on some units. I'm great for bugs man. Got a t-shirt once from a company for finding a bug. Is this an curse or blessing? On another note I did'nt get lsoma.db msg again on the new ROM 2.17 upgrade. Trully Spb Backup is great! I have been restoring lately several times, sometimes the restore gives an issue, but same restore will work again second time around. But Im weird anyway.

So you did the ROM upgrade 2? Was it pretty easy? You like it like jonazen does? How do I go about backing up my ROm and EXT rom before flashing the new ROM?

Try this my good friend. It helped me a lot. And I can zip all the files u need and placed them on my FTP. Cause the biggest issue u will have is getting all the files u need from broken links.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44403

Look if you read too much on this u get concerned, like I said I took the easy way out and loaded the RUU with unlock feature all in one. But I got all software needed, incase I was going to take the route of backing up. But franckly it does not seem so hard. If you want to backup first, then you would use aWizard to unlock FIRST, aWizard backups up too. 2nd ater you unlock, cause if you dont, you will not get access to bootloader which is where os is, I believe, two utilities to backup on SD card. But my understanding is you must dedicate the SD card to backup for future use, if needed only, to restore old ROM. 3rd, and least of ur worries is using RUU to upgrade. The one I posted earlier. Cause you don't really need aWizard or those utilties, to successfully run RUU. RUU is a program in itself will unlock and upgrade. UNLESS you want to backup first, THEN u can't use RUU first, cause the first prompt when u run RUU is "do you want to unlock". Now if you have not unlocked you chose "YES", then it unlocks the delvice first. But if you want to make backups, you can't answer "YES" or it will start to unlock, and at that point ur sort of screwed about making backups first, unless, I believe, you shut down program when it's getting ready to upgrade and asking you a couple other questions, stupid ones, like, Connect PDA to USB cable, and establish and activesync with pda, or "dissable the standby and hybernation modes on the host pc". The RUU does it all, but if you want to backup than you have to perform a few more steps before RUU, cause you cannot use the utilties to backup, unless you unlock first, and that is all aWizard does is unlock (FREEBIE mind you with all those fools selling lunlock software on eBay). The utilities to backup wil only backup, but can't without unlocking first.

Unlocking is easy, the backups utilies get acces to the bootloader, so they can backup old OS. Honestly man, I would do it along side with you on my MDA, if it helped, cause I think the 2.17 works flawlessly on the Wizard. I hear guys going to the now 2.18 version in Chinese, then changing it back to the 2.17 cause they did not like the chinese language. It seems the ROM is already going to 2.18. The point I am making, it's like a stupid hack game with those guys. And I would not feel uncomfortable trying another upgrade, and like them, if I did not like it, changing it back to 2.17. Because once your unlocked, you don't choose this feature on the RUU, you bypass it directly to upgrade Go for it brother. Are you under warranty with TMO? See I'm not, so my attitude is, if I need future repair warranty, im screwed, I guess, unless they come up with the official T-mobile upgrade, then I can run that instead. NOt sure how the T-mobile upgrade will run on unlocked device though? Hey I will deal with it. By time this things needs warranty I will probably be upgrading to faster CPU model. I believe in this little gadget and feel good about it's quality. This is a personal decision, no doubt. But upgrade process seems smooth. The RUU is smooth feels like TMO sent it to me. I hope this helps you man

Posted by: i3onk

Yeagh I am still under warranty. Only had it since the week after it came out. Im just worried about bricking it and not getting it replaced by TMO.
now, there were no issues with your sim working once it was unlocked right? That is another of my concerns, that my SIM will be ****, and that I wont be abler to use TMO network at all for emails, text or calls. I rely HEAVILY on my MDA for emaisl and texting. I make about 2 calls a day, and send at least 30 emails, over 100 texts, and post on about 12 different forums. (needless to say this gets me in alot of trouble at work ALL THE TIME!! LOL)
I have read alot of good stuff about 2.17 and want the benifits that it has to offer. Im just a scared little ***** because this damn thing cost me so much money and dont have the cash for a new one.
As far as the backing up. I already use my minisd for backing up with SBP backup. Since its a 2G card Im not really too worried about running out of space, so letting aWizard backup to my sd is quite alright.
Also, do you have any problems with your apps that you have installed(ie...wifi companion and such) and does it still have pocket MSN and the IM software. I'm pretty sure I can get the OZ IM software online somewhere.

Posted by: The Trooper

i3onk : Same happened to me. I was scared as hell but did it anyways. My experience at first was horrible, I'd get the Data Crashes error and SIM lock as well, however I did manage to solve it and couldn't be happier with my MDA!

Hey Dog! You've been busy tonight! Feel like I missed a party. I had a late night - Tuesday is "martial arts" night for us - my daughter has a class she goes home - then I'm there with my son for his class, and he says while I practice. Just got home and got my son to sleep. Tough workout tonight, and my hands are already stiff - probably worse tomorrow - which ought to be interesting, as I've got two really important meetings up in NYC. Hopefully I won't need my hands much for them...

Not sure re: the 2.18 ROM. At first, it sounded like only the Chinese version was available - which wouldn't have been much help to me. Thought I saw a post about the WWE version this afternoon (English), but I'm not sure - will have to go back and check. But I believe it's "a la carte" - no extended ROM features, so if we want the T-Mobile customizations we'd have to add those back by hand using individual cabs (I haven't tried assembling my own extended ROM yet). I don't know if there's anything new there at all. Also probably worth waiting for something later than .18... Actually enjoying the thought that there are enough companies putting out these Wizard variants (such as Dopod, QTek, K-Jam, T-Mobile, Cingular, etc) that we can probably look forward to updated ROM's coming out for a while. We may see several upgrades over the next 6 to 9 months. Before they stop coming out with new firmware for this model, I imagine we might see a 3.0 version with full-fledged A2DP stereo bluetooth, memory leaks all fixed up, uninstaller problems fixed and the roaming/preferred nets issue resolved -- maybe even before they get all the way to 3.0...

Still no word back from Howard or any HoFo admins? Frustrating! Maybe if you scan this forum you can find a link to let you contact a moderator -- might be a starting point to get you in touch with somebody who can help with your username and email issue.

My simm was working fine. One of the utilties unlocks the SIMM and CID, but aWizard only unlocks CID. I guess if u unlocked SIMM u may have issue, I had none, phone worked immediately! I have been online with no issues, and getting email via outlook no problem. Your 2 Gig card will be WIPED OUT! The backup process relies on a dedicated SD card, I believe. That is why on that link I gave u, the guy talking about the process says, use a 128MB card as a sacrafice in case u need to restore ur old ROM for warranty purpose.

This other guy "The Trooper" said he had some issues, not sure why? I, on the other hand, too had a weird experience, but it was my own doing. I installd the RUU and said "NO" to unlock, like idiot! RUU started upgrading, then gave me error msg. I was left with MDA screen in three colors. I thought I bricked it! But soft reset device and it came right back with no problem. A hard earned little lesson about having to unlock first. You see this kind talk stuff and the kind of things u hear from "The Trooper" scares people. But reality is reality, right! I can say this with comfort. I have been all over the xda-developers site, and have not, yet, come across some person who bricked it. Most of them have ALL had success, and some who stumbled a little on some technicality after, managed to get it going and succeeding with upgrade. Preparation is your best friend. I looked at links of possible issues, in case i had to apply one or two, preparation is key.

But my experience using RUU alone was great. I am not sure why "The Trooper" had this issue, maybe he can explain a bit more....??

Hey I bid for my MDA on eBay from California, paid more than the upgrde would have cost me via TMO, so I know the feeling about bricking it bro.. But I will not lie to you, look in the xda-developers site to see Edge/GPRS issues, cause I don't use either one, maybe edge in future, just Wi-Fi. Maybe Jonazen could input his experience here also....

No it does not have IM, but u can get it. Other software are still there, and even two others, like commander, and some dumb utility that runs java apps, which I donwloaded some, and their cheap in nature, so I remove it. Out side of that, the comm mgr has changed a bit, and the dialer is a little different in blue shade color, but I am sure a skin around would do good there. I mean there was one guy who said, his calander button would bring up the dialer instead, but that did not happen to me. If you successfully backup, and don't like 2.17 go back to old one.

I was looking at a chat with other group of guys that would flash the ROM on demo phones then flash back before giving it to manufacturer. They said, the manufacturer never new they were flashing the ROM. I don't know what else to say, except you need to do some soul searching, cause nothing can convince u, except taking the plunge, or wait. I am sure Tmobile's got to be coming up with upgrade soon. Just not sure what soon means to TMO. Reason I bought MDA from ebay was, TMO still can't stock this phone for new contract upgrade. Too slow they blow..

Posted by: i3onk

I use the GPRS all the time as I am not always near a wifi connection. Thanks to wifi companion I am able to find a couple of networks near my work that i wasnt able to get ahold of before. Without it the device kept asking for a PW to gain access to the networks. With WIFI companion, I connecto to the no problem. Just hope my work doesnt catch on and realize I have been connecting to the wifi there or I am going to be major fired HAHA!
Well When I bought my 2G card I gave my daughter my 256M card for her phone. Maybe i can talk her into giving me her 128M for my backup card.
You didnt say if pocket MSN was working though. I was pretty sure I read that the IMs (aim and yahoo) weren't working but I havnt read anything about pocket MSN.
I am seriously leaning towards doing this. As long as I can get the device to reload the backed up TMO ropm and EXT ROM, Im ok with it I guess.

Another little tidbit of info. I had that error where I got the three color screen after a reboot a few weeks ago. I couldnt get away from it. It kept going to just that screen. If you EVER need to do a hard reset and the device hasnt totally booted up yet, hold the comm button and the voice record button and hit soft reset at the same time. Continue to hold the comm and voice button until the prompt to hard reset comes up. Hit the green talk button and you are good to do.

JVCX007: I'm not trying to scare people, as a matter of fact I encourage them to do the upgrade. I posted my experience in this thread http://howardforums.com/showthread....4&page=11&pp=15
I still don't know what went wrong, however, the reason why I posted it was so that people find a way to recover from the data crashes error if they encounter it.

Actually I'm sorry I came across that way, your experience was real, and ur right, preparation means looking at all possible angles. Afterall I can understant anyone a little concerned about bricking it, would not be a good feeling.

Yeah Im familiar with that boot sequence, but thanks for reminding us. GPRS ha? Man I have not used GPRS since my first TMO PPC. I tried it for a while few years ago, but connection was so slow it irritated me. Thank goodness for Wi-Fi, and I would not mind someday trying Edge, I hear TMO claiming 4G. As far as Wi-Fi companion goes, it's my only petpeeve right now, cause I believe wifi comp is miss reading signals. Let me explain, in my homeofc I sit right next to my wireless router, before upgrade Wi-Fi showed 98-100% signal, normal right? After all I'm almost on top of router, now same location it keeps showing 66%. On the other side of house I would get 45%, wi-fi comp shows now 22%. The odd thing is, in settings, the wireless meter shows a complete good signal next to router, so again, I think wi-fi is miss reading, not sure why. I tried hard boot and installed only wi-fi, still same signal reading. BUT I want to make clear, that my connection to internet or email is very good and fast no matter what wi-fi says. There was a moment when I saw 5.5Mbps insted of the 11 on b router, it did concern me abit, but back to 11 now.

Also I was reading on xda a guy talking about he used a 1G card for the backup and said it seemed to take an awefull long time.

Not sure about GPRS bro, maybe someone here who uses it, can share some light on GRRS after upgrade, or honestly try the xda-developers site, see if someone is talking about it. I go there often now, and if I see anything about this tonight, i will post it for u. U can always post a msg on xda.

I know the deal with kids man After my ordeal with my darn flat, I had to replace 4 tires today, did not expect that. True the .18 is not enouph for me to flash again. I will wait for a better version, one that makes a bit difference on all topics u mentioned. But ur right about these devices, their HOT!! I don't care what name u give them, their made by HTC with different logos and cutom bootloaders. UTStarcom 6700 just came out with a version. It's that keyboard man, inginious, best I have ever used on ppc, and does not take away from a screen that is already smaller then expected. I remember when I got my MDA, my first reaction was weird, after iPaq 6315, i felt, man this is a small device I hope I can live with screen size. But it's the best PPC I have ever owned! Small in size, big in class.

At the tire store I got into conversation with two guys, one with laptop and a 700W, and another guy with, yes, an MDA . First time I see someone else with one. So I pointed him to HOFO and XDA. Both these guys were just regular JOE's, u know email only. In conversatin with the 700W guy, he said, "I am not that into it, but can't live without it". But hacking is not something I would get into, he said. I said, what if you upgrded your wireless LAN to 802.11G, ur device can only communicate at 8011.b, but has the tehnology to use 802.11g, what would u do? He said, I'm not sure, I guess. I said, hack it baby!! U have the power of G not only B. The point was well made.

He then asked, why the heck would u need to unlock? I said, well lets say, you are using a GSM network like Cingular, but you really like the MDA from TMO. Lets say, I knew you and new that about you. My company recently changed carriers and now forces me to use a 700W. Well I can sell it to you! Now u can use it without the TMO login screen, and ur a new owner of an MDA on Cingular.

People don't realize that TMO, Cingular, what ever, are not in the business of selling phones, they are in the business of SIMMS, and monthly payments, that's the BIG bucks. They don't care where u got the phone, as long as u have a SIMM. The magic word . Even on the my-mobile.com site, if you log on, it shows ur phone, and support for it, but on top of that is a little link that says, "not ur phone", or something like that, you can change it and get the support links to it. Why cause TMO understand this, their in the business of SIMMS, not phones. They know people change phones all the time without their knowledge, and they could care less.

Hey on another note on upgrade, are u having weird things like games popping up on u or other apps? Not sure what yet, is it me, my case, what?? But things keep popping up on me when I least expect them or need them. This causes me a little issue, need to lock device, and
BT soundON, will not work with device locked. Besided I am going to change my BT headset anyway. But do things pop up on you? I am not sure if button 4 (hold) pops up other stuff? Today, pressing 4 (hold) voicedial kicked in like weird, from same button MVC is on, yet MVC is still on their, and popped up again with no issues. Weird little things..??

I3ONK. NO the new versoin did not include Yahoo, MSN, or IM. NOt sure why, I guess the guy (people) who customized it, decided he/they did not like them. But I think u can download them, if u need. Small trade off.. But can undersnd if important to u.

I was using agile messenger, but it had some issues that I wasnt happy with. I guess I will have to go back to using that if I decide to flash.
Got the 128M card from my daughter today, so I have the minisd that I can dedicate for aWizards backup.

I have installed 2.17, SPB Pocket Plus, SPB Backup, WM5NewMenu and have started to get the hang of it. However, like everybody, I am having some problems which I haven’t been able to fix. I am listing all of them and hope that individuals who have found solutions to some of them could help.

Internet Explorer Part A – When I use internet explorer w/ Edge, I find 2 issues. First , Yahoo says “I am currently using Internet Explorer 4.0. For the best experience using Yahoo, we recommend that you upgrade to the latest version.” So, what do I do to either upgrade IE and get rid of this message or should I use something like OPERA which I am not familiar with?

Internet Explorer Part B – When I use internet explorer w/ Edge, I will go to a website. It will appear to start downloading the information from the website as the “bar of progress” on the bottom of the screen appears to be completed. Then, when it appears that everything has been downloaded, nothing appears on my screen. It doesn’t ask me if it is a trusted website or anything and there is nothing to scroll down. However, the little lock on the top left corner of the page is "locked". Any ideas? If this is a secure website, how do I access it?

Thanks.........Anthony

As far as your first PIE problem. You can use Tweaks2k2 to make PIE act as IE 6. That might take care of that problem. As far as Number 2 I have no clue.

I guess the version of Agile I was using before was an older one. I downloaded the newest version yesterday and I think I like it alot better.

Another question. Is it ok to unlock CID and backup the ROM and EXT ROM without doing a ROM Flash? I thought maybe I would try and do this one step at a time. LOL I think I feel ok about unlocking CID and backing up the ROM and EXT ROM, not quite at the point where I am OK with flashing the ROM yet.

Unfornately Tweak2k2 and PIE to act as IE6 does not take care of the problem. I hated that cause, I use Opera, and PIE for sites with flash, cause Opera does not support flash yet, but it's a much better, and faster browser. Well I could not use PIE on Movies.com cause I got same msg this guy got on yahoo. I tried the PIE tweak, still same. You know what solved it?? The new 2.17 ROM upgrade. I just tried PIE again on movies.com, and to my surprise, it worked. Movies.com did not ask me to upgrade.

Food for thought boys..

That's good in general. I don't like to tweak the registry to get PIE to masquerade at IE6 -- then you never get to see the PDA versions of the websites when they exist -- and I really appreciate those when I'm surfing "on the EDGE", so to speak...

I can't stop saying this, like a singer, OPERA. It is the best browser experience in the market. Try it, it's free beta and works beautiful on MDA, and you will not have to pay for it for 2 months. You can also try NetFront, or Thunderhawk, for my money, FREE at moment, Opera is second to none. I can't do things with PIE I can easily with Opera. Opera has a bar at bottom of screen which shows your uploading web files, so that you know it's working fast, unlike PIE which has that annoying moving window, and u never really know what the heck it's doing and slow as molases. When I was going to movies.com with PIE I would get thrown into a screen to upgrade, to a better PIE, or other browsers, one of the recomendations was OPERA. http://www.opera.com/
Just read the reviews on it. http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1912267,00.asp

I3onk and atwnsw I put the entire 2.17 enchalada on a file called mdaromup.zip. This includes all the necessary files to succeed at your possible ROM upgrade. Including xda links with support issues. File is big 55MB in size, even on my FIOS it took a while to upload, but all you need is right there. Le me know. There is a readme with graphics on RUU, look at that first, go over sites I went over. Good luck

Thanx man, just downloaded it. Ill check it out.

Wish I knew what was taking up all the storagememory on my Device LOL. Im down to 4.6M. At least I still have 16.2 for Program memory.

NM Figured that out, lol. I installed a couple of games to my device on accident. Dont know how I did that, lol, I put all my games on my SD card. I think Im going to start putting everything on my sd card. with 2G of space, lord knows I have plenty of room.

Also to ask this question again(may have gotten looked over in the longer previous posts), Is it ok to unlock CID and backup the ROM and EXT ROM without doing a ROM Flash? I thought maybe I would try and do this one step at a time. LOL I think I feel ok about unlocking CID and backing up the ROM and EXT ROM, not quite at the point where I am OK with flashing the ROM yet.

I know the feeling. I was getting same crap RAM, down to 16, 14, or less, when running programs, and even after cleaning stuff, using all the tools I have, and I have, best was 17, and after a soft reset maybe 18MB RAM

SK Tools has a neat little utilitiy, out side of the tool siblings of utilities in puts in its folder, called "FREE UP RAM". When I am down to 16 or less, it always frees up about 2MB's, but i still have to soft reset to get the best.

But I am getting better results with 2.17 believe it or not, about 19-20. I still want more, cause we have 64MB why the heck can't we have at least 30. There was some guy on xda that claimed after 2.17 he was getting 50!! I got to find him, I posted a msg, as to what the heck he was doing, but have not gotten reply, or I got to find post again. But I am seriously looking for answers.

19.8 or 20 sometimes, but I never got this with old ROM, even with this utility and soft reset I got at maybe 18 or so. Even when no applications are running something lingers around and hogs some memory, and man, I think it's wan Johazen said, memory leaks, but 2.17 is managing it better, but we need a better solutuion. I tell you, I have used memmaker, SKtools with every possible sibling tool, like registry cleaning, program hog, what ever it has, I have tried it more than once. But with 2.17 the best I can get is 19.9 -20, before starting to run stuff, then this process starts over again.

You can unlock and backup, and NOT upgrade. I mean, unlocking is a painless process that rights to a seperate chip, never messing with the bootloader. Backing up just does that backup. So after your backed up, what do u have? A device that is simply unlocked. And you have some bckups. But you cannot backup your OS without unlocking. Unfortanetly Cellurar Carriers don't want to make it easy for you to fool them, but that's for normal people, were not normal right

AKA the Lost MadDogX007

Let me respond to few issues real quick as far as I know For those that are sending me private msgs, I like to elaborate cause Im originally from NYC like Jonazen, and ulness u tell me to shot up I am going to keep on talking.

Memory, what a beautiful thought for most of us. Like having power from the SUN. You can never get enouph of it! It's a mystery to me why PPC/phone devices don't give you tons of it. You get more resources with PPC's that are not phone devices, like better CPU speeds, and RAM 128MB. But that's our little world, and we have to live with it, for now.

The beauty about WM5 is that it manages memory better than other devices, but it has a trade off, in my opinion. Actually WM5 manages memory similar to a regular PC. On a regular PC when u load software, we know it loads on storage ROM (Read only Memory), never to RAM (Random Access Memory). memory 101. But if power goes dead on a regular PC you don't loose anything, except what was in RAM at moment, that's why I use UPS's (Universal Power Supplies) on my systems. On WM5 same principal applies. The trade of is this. If you loose battery life you loose nothing! But if you cold boot WM5 device, you loose all that's in Flash ROM (little storage we get about 40MB in size).

To make comparison. On an iPaq using WM2003, you get the option of loading software on Device, iPaq Storge (ROM), or External Storage (SD cards). But when you cold boot device (For those of us, like me, who would not be to embaresed to read Books for dummies , well some of those books are requiring lots of experience to read these days, and I am embarresed to say, I feel like a dummy reading some of them , cold boot, like i3onk mentioned earlier, is a process which is different from soft booting (which is like reset on a computer) on iPaq's like the h6315, you don't loose what's on ROM, UNLIKE WM5 MDA where you will loose all your apps in ROM storage. So backups, like Spb Backup, are even more critical on WM5, cause it copies everything in ROM (like mirror).

When u load programs on WM5, you are only given two options, Device, or External Storage. But look at your RAM before you install an app, and cleary WM5 is not using RAM, but Flash ROM (Internal built in 40MB or so storage AKA Device/Program Files). Now you can choose to install appls, or load stuff anywhere besides Device/Program Files, and WM5 is still be using ROM, not RAM.

The differences, in this example, between the WM03 iPaq, and WM5 MDA, if battery life goes dead on MDA you loose Nothing in ROM! But on the iPaq you loose all your ROM storage. So which is better? If you loose your battery life, you loose nothing, or if you cold boot, you loose your ROM? There is good in everything, of course, but if you have good backups on your MDA, you still loose nothing on ROM? And you better have a new battery source. Folks, I like the idea of rather loosing nothing when you Cold Boot, like the iPaq. Or better yet, both is cleary the winner, loose nothing on battery life, and nothing on cold boot in ROM. But I rarely ever use up my battery life on these devices. If you like me, and I hope we have something else in common, I have car chargers for everything I carry. I don't get in my car without plugging things in. As a family we plug ourselves in the vehicle to all our little gadgets. I have one rule of thumb in my vehicle, you don't get in and play around with your gadget, unless your using car battery power, or don't complain to me, that your little life gadget is dead, and if I my MDA battery does go dead, hopefully I was smart enouph to have done full backups, and nightly custom backups of my contacts, email, yada yada. I find myself, messing with these devices, cold booting more than I like. MDA backups make up for it.

What eats up RAM in any PC is a gigantic mystery to most of us, I don't care how much experience you have. You can use utility apps all day to help you recover precious RAM, but rebooting (resetting) is the ultimate tool to recover RAM. For the most part, it's the .dll files, other files programs use, that don't completely shutdown when an application closes. Which leads me to ask, why can't we have more RAM, like 128MB, or 256MB, than our problems are over, the utilies will help us recover some RAM, but for the mot part resetting will be a rare animal. O.K I got this out of my system

has anybody experienced this?? When i connect to Wi-Fi, my MDA drops my signal for some reason, and when i turn it off, it does not pick it back up. When i connect to Wi-Fi, i can go into Settings:Phone:Network: and select find network and it will search for 2 to 3 secs and find me a full signal. Anyone know why this happens, and what i can do to stop it?? Could it be a conflicting program??
I've tried to do soft resets, but it still happens!!!

what rom are you running? i noticed something like this with the imate rom for some reason, i just changed to the qtek rom and the wifi works flawlessly now not sure why this is since the roms are almost identical, but the newest qtek rom seemed to solve the issue.

I3onk listen. I ran aWizard beta. The version you donwloaded was the beta 1.3. The other one, which I am trying to find right now is the true and tested 1.2. Now when you unzip this aWizard, it tells you the following: "
This utility is created for experimental purpose only. Use it at your own risk!" Also said, "!!!!Please choose the unlock CID option before you flash any new ROM!!! Or your phone may risk chance to become dead!!!!

Now I don't mean to scare you or anyone, but I want to run this myself to change the TMO Logo. I would love to hear from Jonazen at this point, because I believe he took this road to upgrade his ROM. Jonazen are you there buddy!! Tell me, did you use aWizard? Did you use aWizard to CID Unlock, and to backup, cause it says, "aWizard is a user friendly ROM Utility which provide a single place to do Wizard ROM related tasks. OS ROM can be backup and restore using USB ActiveSync connection". Also says, "Other ROM Types like Bootloader, Radio and Extended ROM will not be affected".

This next line catches me by surprise, I am still trying to figure out what it actually means to me, it said, "To change those parts (talking about Other ROM types like botoloader, radio and extended rom above), please use cooresponding update programs (which are in the zip file I3onk donwloaded) and then use aWizard to change the OS to your desired one?

Jonazen did take this route???? We need your HELP and Assistance here buddy! 13onk! Remember i took the lazy road out to upgrade to 2.17 ROM. I used the RUU program, and it did not backup up Bootloader, Radio and Extended Rom. RUU did everything for me in one easy step. It unlocked and upgraded. But I believe Jonazen took the step your about to take. And frankly I am running the software to see what happens, but first I want to look at the 1.2 version and see the readme file, cause it's not the beta one.

Can u give link to the Qtek ROM upgrade? Can u give link to the actuall FTP Qtek upgrade. I had those but went with MDA version. Also is the Qtek v2.17? Cause my wi-fi companion runs good, the bars on the top look right, but in the software the signal portion is not reporting properly, so I am curious about the Qtek ROM version.

Thanks

Here is a link to the Qtek rom page. ftp://xda-developers.com/Wizard/Roms/Qtek The 2.17v is located there.

I trade files via BT all the time. as long as your device is set to discoverable there should be no problem.

Hi guys - I was actually out earning a living today...much as I would have preferred being here and playing with the innards of my MDA. ("working in a coal mine, going down, down...").

Anyway...no - I, too, took the lazy, risky way out -- I did NOT back up the ROM first, and I ran the custom 2.17 installer, letting it do the unlock up front for me, and then load the qtek 2.17 ROM and then the select customizations that xelencin included. That was it - I didn't do anything else...

Yeah got to work to eat. I know the easy way is really the simplest way. I have been looking at the aWizard today, and tried changing my Splash.bmp, why not have something custom you know, but it would not work.

On another note, hope not related to splashing, but don't think so. Long story short, I had to restore a previous backup and on soft reset 4 times already, two calender reminders keep popping up during windows reboot screen, I keep dismissing them, but last one just locks up process, weird, may have to cold boot again, I wonder if there is issue with calender reminder popops, while rebooting? reminder popups should at least wait for reboot sequence. Right? Thank goodness for Spb Backup, cause I may have to cold boot, and select custom restore and only restore system data, avoiding contacts, calender, etc, so that I can get back in system, then restore latest daily contacts, calender, and dissable that feature, bummer. with all this experimental crap I keep doing, I'm becoming a pro at cold booting & swiftly restoring. The only thing slowing me down, is that cut and past tutorial crap.

I got my MDA dock today. I love it. MDA slid right in nice and easy and sync'd and is charging with no issues. I wish it was set at a little more of an angle. Would make it easier to see the screen from more of a distance. I just had to relocate it to a closer position. It works great. I love it. I like the stylus lighting up blue. It has some little bubbles in the shaft so it looks kind of neat, like a lava lamp sort of.
As the pic from I suspected and the picture from another poster( I cant remember who) the MDA sits recessed into the dock as it plugs into the usb. Sits nicely and feels secure.

OK I am going to try it today. Im going to CID unlock and backup my ROMs. Everyone cross your fingers, that the next post on here isnt full of words that may get me banned from the forums HAHA!
Hopefully back in a short few

Do I need to worry about backing up the bootloader? Should I find an app that does this, or would that be pointless?

Wooohoooo! Unlocked and Backed UP. Not a hitch. Took about a half hour but all is well. makes me feel alittle easier about the ROM flash, knowing I unlocked without screwing anything up

Go i3onk, go!

Sounds like a good omen! Think your MDA is wanting 2.17!

Posted by: i3onk

LOL! Well maybe. Hey how long did the whole ROM flash process take? I need to time this between the interupting calls from the GF.lol

MaddogX007 back....but not in yet....Oneday.

Interesting observations after having to cold boot. I restored "Full" backup, which included only DATA (including apps I had installed in Flash). I noticed my ram was up 24.19MB, before installing Spb Pocket Plus. Here is what I had installed.
Z2 Pocket LAN
Tweak2k2
Wifi-Companion
MS Voicecommand
Active X (Flash)
MemMaid
Kilmist Registry
Network Browswer (may remove since PocketLAN is winning for me)
SKtools
Spb Backup
*****************
This is what came with new 2.17 ROM upgrade:
* Wizard Registry tweak by Xelecin. [Not sure why they included this, cause I am not sure what they chose to tweak in registry, as apposed to what I tweaked with Tweak2k2] [ http://htcwizard.westlands.org/2006...our-htc-wizard/ ] BUT I can't find this in device/program files/?
*Total Commander. I like this a lot [ http://www.ghisler.com/ ]
*DAT Mailtrigger (Note sure what the heck this is for, I can't find anything about it right now).

Any feed back on Wizard Registry, and what tweaks they used on 2.17, and DAT Mailtrigger would be appreciated.

Maybe 10-15 minutes, I remember.

Posted by: i3onk

Yeah I used aWizard for the unlock CID and the backup. The whole process took maybe a half hour. was extremely easy. Save the lock file and a copy of the unlock .bin files, as well as the 3 backups in the folder that aWizard.exe was run from. I then copied them all to my 128M minisd just to keep them safe.

Try this Maddog, this was in one of the files that you ziped up for me to DL from your FTP. It is in regards to the splash screen. I havnt tried it yet, but I just dl'd it and will give it a run in a few minutes. I don't think it is related to aWizard, so maybe is will work out for your splash flash.

Posted by: i3onk

I just tried the tool. It wasnt actually in the zip file, it was a link on one of the html files that you posted.

http://www.ppcsg.com/mobile/index.php/t71471.html

I checked that out, and started to run it, but my Zone Alarm Pro started to tell me this thing wanted to act a server and different modues were requesting this, so I abondened the whole thing, but it must be o.k. I am going to try it again. So did you upgrade yet?

Hey on another note, in ref to RAM. I was getting about 24MB, before Spb Pocket Plus, after installing Pocket Plus am now getting 22.2MB. That's best I have seen

Between u and me man, I think u took the hardest steps. Cause after looking at aWizard, your braver man than me. The RUU process seems a heck of alot easier, just don't unlock in your case, since u unlocked alrady.

Hey, I have tried that darn splash utility. I created a bmp by taking the one on site and trowing into my paint program, but every time I do this, the darn splash utility goes into motion resets my MDA, but don't get nothing. I had named the bmp jay.bmp, but renamed it splash.bmp, and put it in same folder as the utility, whats up with these, what did u do? Can i name the folder anything, or it has to be the name the link says....

1. I made a folder on my desktop and named it splash tool.
2. I put the splash_bmp_to_wizard.exe into the folder.
3. I used adobe phto deluxe to make my pic 240 x 320 and exported it file, and chose bmp.
4. opened it in paint to make sure it was 24 bit .bmp and saved it
5. I changed the name to splash and placed t into the splash tool folder I made
6. ran the splash_bmp_to_wizard.exe
7. it did some things and restarted my device and when it came back on the pic was now my splash screen.

It was suprisingly easy. Granted my pic looked a little streched, but that didnt matter as a test pic. I will make it look right the next time.

Can we copy and save the original splash in case (for some unknown reason) we want to replace it without resorting to a hard reset?

Posted by: i3onk

I was talking to the creator of that thread. He said the original splash can be extracted using Typhoon Tool. He said it was in the XDA dev forum somewhere. I have done a search for it, but havnt sifted through the threads that the search returned yet. Guess its too late for me to extract mine lol. Let me know if you find it and get the original tmosplash extracted.

I came real close to flashing lol. I started up RUU and then hit q to quit. HAHA Im |-| close to doing it.

Posted by: JVCX007

Well I went to this site linked from xda, and downloaded a neat gremlin picture, and placed it in my device windows folder using name: welcomehead.96.png used after windows logo if u have pw enabled. Notice after your splash probably windows comes back, this changes that. So I get the windows logo, but then I get the gremlin which is really cool. but I can't flash to get the first windows logo out, not sure why, have tried several times. I donwnloaded the newest version... http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...=asc&highlight= wizSplash still with no luck, but I get the gremlin.
