Is Wifi Possible for 650??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've come across a lot of web sites that talk about the "Shadowmite crack." But does it actually work? I havent reallly come across anyone that says it does. Now i'm gonna get a 650 tomorrow and would like to try out the Wifi on it with the Palmone wifi card, but is it worth it?

I know this is an old and on going topic, but once and for all, is it possible?

If you want wifi you can get the card from palm or you could go out and get the wifi sled.

I know about the Sled, but personally I think its ugly and bulky to carry around. Reason i'm looking into the wifi card by palm1.

Is anyone certain wifi card works ?

Posted by: Rayan

So far, I've only found references that wifi card does not work on Treo 650... Not even Palm's WiFi card...

I am desperate for it too!...

It's just not fair. Spending so much $$ and not having Wifi access. The people at Palm1 deserve a slap.

Never the less, I'm going to try Wifi anyway just to convince myself that it doesn't work. Just gotta make sure of the retun policy...

I just found out about this site: http://www.shadowmite.com

The author was able to create a WiFi driver for the Treo 650 but does not provide many details or if he succeeded or not.

Take a look and give it a try. I don't have the Palm WiFi card to try it out for myself.

Let us know!

Best regards,
Rayan

I don't mean to be a downer - but this is the whole reason I haven't bought the Treo - no wifi. The only reliable way (that I know of) is the enfora sled. No SD wifi card works - not even Palm's card. This has been a BIG issue with Treo owners. I've considered the Treo with the sled, but the whole point of getting a converged device is having less "stuff", not more. If you're determined to go through with the testing of the sd wifi card, you might want to read the thread below (all 65 pages of it!). It fully explains that although some have gotten Shadowmite's drivers to 'work', they are very unstable and have caused many hard and soft resets to get the device back to standard working order. Here's the link:

Wifi SD drivers for Treo

You should really try talking to Shadowmite... He's extremely helpful and he's done an amazing amount of work for the TReo... I don't mean to upset the mods here but you should really check out TreoCentral.com, they really have a lot of extremely knowledgeable/helpful people there and there's a lot of info about custom rom's for the Treo...

I agree, its supposed to be a convergence of features. The only reason I bought the Treo is for the Palm OS and phone combo. There are a lot more medical programs for the Palm OS compared to the Windows.

I've already read Shadowmite's forum and other forums concerning WIFI and its issues. Only reason I stared this topic is to see any RECENT successful users. From the looks of it, doesn't seem to be any.

As I said before, I'm gonna try the Wifi on the 650 with the shadowmite's drivers. Just picked up the Wifi card at compusa, now I'm waiting impatiently for UPS to deliver my 650 today. Soon as I get that, i'll start messing with it.

I spent about 3 days reading that Shadowmite thread from beginning to end on how he got it working. he said he did get it working, but he lost a few features, it's been a couple weeks and I can't remember what it was now that was lost. You have to do it from a hard reset.. I have the steps and the file saved on my HD if you want a copy of it..

Uneeasysilence page

If the files and the guide are from this site, then I already have them. But if they're different, let me know.

Still waiting for UPS delivery....

Alright, I've gotten the 650 about a couple of hours ago and I tried to install the patched files by shadowmite. Wifi did not work. The phone just resets over and over again without a stop.

SO, just as some of the people have tried and claimed, it doesn't work. Major bummer after spending so much dough on it.

Time to return the wifi...

Guess we just have to wait and see if and when Palmone will release the drivers.

hey spartan, did you just try once or did you try again? many people have had problems with the first load of a new rom and after hard resetting and trying again things work perfectly... not trying to say you're not doing anything, just don't want you to give up on it too easy as sometimes it's just weird like that...

Posted by: spartanman

You're right. The first time I tried, it just reset in loops. The second time i did something different, when the 650 rebooted, I took out the wifi card. The phone went to the normal screen and I could see a wifi network icon. So i then put the wifi card in, clicked on the icon, and could actually see my wireless router!!

yea i was pretty excited about that. It finds the network, finds the IP, connects, then stops. Its strange. Even with a good signal, it says out of range for some reason. I tried to fool around witht it but Im not sure what else to do. By the way, what other browsers can be used with a 650?

Posted by: spartanman

Anyone have any suggestions for me to try? Just hit me with ideas and i'm willing.
Guess I'll keep the wifi till tomorrow, so lets beat the crap out of it till then.(haha yea right)

hey spartan, I know Xiino works on the treo, but there's also webpro, and netfront... I think some people have problems with webpro but I think it's been fixed/worked around... hope it works out for ya!
