I got a 7290 and just called tmo to unlock the phone. I gave him my IMEI# and the phone model and he said it should be all set? Don't they need to give me an unlock code for me to enter into the phone to unlock it? The guy confued me quite a bit and I just wanted to make sure what is actually the correct procedure.

They'll give you an unlock code and instructions. Sounds like you got a rep who didn't know what he was doing. Try calling back.

I just went through this with T-Mobile. It was my third time unlocking a Blackberry with TMO (I've unlocked two 7230's and, just now, a 7290).

1. You have to call TMO and get a rep to set you up to receive the unlocking code. You have to have been a paying customer in good standing for some period (2 or 3 months) and cannot have unlocked another phone in the past 3 months -- or so my rep told me. They need to get a good email address for you.

2. Generally, they email the unlock info within 24 to 48 hours. Sometimes when they have to go back to the phone maker, however, it can take up to 14 days. I got my 7290 unlock code within 24 hours.

3. TURN OFF THE RADIO on the Blackberry before doing the unlock. My first 7230 died completely doing an unlock -- this was before this issue was identified. T-Mobile called RIM, RIM wanted my phone back directly while TMO was sending me another replacement phone. It took 4 months to get the accounting and phone return stuff straight.

4. The T-Mobile unlock email provides the unlock info. For the 7290, these instructions as of yesterday were:

Thank you for taking the time to contact T-Mobile. Below you will see the Instructions for unlocking your Blackberry device.

NOTE: If you receive an error message while performing the instructions below, stop. Please be aware that if an excessive amount of incorrect attempts are made, the phone will be permanently locked. Verify the IMEI by pressing *#06# and submit a new request.

Warning! The Wireless Mode MUST BE OFF before performing the given SIM Unlock instructions in order to avoid causing the device from becoming defective.

How to turn Wireless Mode Off:
1. Scroll to the Airplane Icon (Turn Wireless Off.)
2. Press Select.
3. Wireless Mode will turn off.

How to SIM Unlock the device:
1. Go to the "Options" screen
2. Select the "SIM Card" option
3. Type MEPD
4. To select "Network" type MEP2 (ALT + E is the key that gives 2 when shifted)
5. Release the ALT key, it should then ask for the code
6. Enter the unlock code

Thank You,

Sim Unlock Department

Network unlock codes are phone/IMEI specific.

Hi!

Pardon me... I typically hang out on the Sony Ericsson forums, I'm a fairly heavy Blackberry user.

I don't really like my 7100t. There are times I wish I could go back to my 957. A guy at work got a new 8700c and is going to give me his old 7200 or 7700 series (doesn't know which), but his provider is Cingular and I'm on T-Mobile. Two questions:

1) How much trouble is it to get a Cingular Blackberry unlocked?

2) Would it be easier to do this or just buy a 7730 for T-Mobile off of eBay?

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks!

Xeraux

Ended up buying the 7730...
