killing open/running apps?

All right, I apologize if this is a stupid question but short of having to go into settings and memory, how does one end an app when they are done using it?

While I am trying to learn this phone I at times open a lot of stuff. Well that "stuff" remains in memory and starts slowing things down until I go into memory to end them.

There has to be an easier way.......

download a program called Magic Button.

Although I tried using this a few times, it started to mess up my overall system so I uninstalled the app.

However, a lot of others had nothing but positive experience from this app.
