using the data cable (4900) + PCS vision + POP email?

aiight, i've used the data cable w/ my 4900 successfully w/ the SprintPCS connection software from the CD that comes w/ it from the sprint stores (i ripped the ISO from the CD, returned the entire package and then bought the cable separately...shhhhh ), however, i can't seem to get my POP email or log into my ftp site when connected thru my phone . i can browse the web, use AIM and ICQ no problem, but it doesn't seem to connect on port 110 (POP mail), port 25 (SMTP mail) or obscure ftp ports.

i was gonna call sprint to ask them, but from experience w/ their "Vision Techs", i'm sure i would a get a response similar to "what's POP?" (i'd add a 'hehe' here, but it's sadly true that something like that would happen).

any ideas? thanks for the info....sturmie

Hi all,
I'm really new to this but I am having the same problems using Outlook Express on my laptop. I have a Sanyo 4900 with vision and a data cable and Sprint connection manager software.
I can surf the web ok, but cannot get Outlook Express to access my other POP3 accounts.

This is all I really need the phone to do. Just downloadand upload my mail while on the road.

What's wrong here?

Hal..

I'm about to give up on connecting my 4900 anyway.
It won't stay connected for very long and is very very slow!
Aside from the POP issue I simply can't get it to work accecptably
What's wrong here? Anyone?

my browsing w/ Vision and the data cable is fine (albeit, a little slow...but downloads = ~ISDN speeds, which is nice), but that POP issue and connectin to FTP sites are really frustrating....any help would be appreciated.

Please refer to that thread. I've had similar problems with my a500. But, it was intermittent. Maybe now they've block those ports permanently.

I am able to use my 4900 and data cable to do anything online that I would over my regular internet connction. Including POP3. First thing I did was to delete the Sprint software That stuff suxx, and should not be used. I run windows XP pro and it identified my phone nicely as a modem, via USB cable, and I just set up a dialer as I would for any modem and that was all there was to it.

Thanks Bad,
It works great after I uninstalled the Sprint Connection Mgr software. Youre right, it's crap!

After I connect, it says I'm connected at 28.8? I thought connection would be faster. Is there anything I can do to inprove on this?

Your connection speed will vary. You are dealing with a shared bandwidth situation, so it will be faster at times and slower at others. In my area, I find that I get anywhere from 80-110% of dialup. That is jsut where it is at. By summer, I am expecting them to upgrade to something toward 144k. Then you will seee increased speeds. But for now, it aint fast, but it is online.

Actually the DUN status window shows it connected at 28.8
The actual data rate could be higher or less?

Also, just curious if firmware upgrade for the 4900 is desirable. Not sure which version I have now.

In any event, the ability to simply bring up Otulook Express and download and upload mail is what I'll use most while on the road.

I hope Sprint doesn't do anything to my "Unilimited Vision" plan!
So far I haven't seen any extra charges for surfing.

You might as well go into DUN and set the conectio speed as hi as possible. It cant hurt. And no. There are no charges. I have browsed on my desktop using that connection for up to 3 hours at a time
