Motorola e815 and SMS messaging through iChat/OS X Address Book

Hello,
When I try to initiate a SMS message through the Address Book in Mac OS X 10.4.x, the SMS message option is grayed out (my phone has been successfully paired).
When I try to send an SMS message using iChat, I get the response "your buddy is currently not online". My carrier is Verizon.
Should these two features be working? Can anybody else verify this on an identical setup?
