Data Cable USB DCA-540

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I have bought a genuine Siemens Data Cable USB DCA-540 for my Siemens M65 from a shop on e-bay. Before buying this item on Tuesday I asked the seller, “does this come with or need an installation disc?” Later I received the answer “no you download it from Siemens website.” I went to the Siemens website, onto the Office accessories page and then into the Data Cable USB DCA-540 page. I clicked on Service Downloads under Product Support and downloaded the Data Cable DCA-540 - driver software on the this page:

http://www.benqmobile.com/cds/front....html#co ntent

This downloaded a Compressed zip Folder and under the icon it was called USBDriver_DCA-540_v0.71. I extracted the information and this opened a normal folder called USBDriver_DCA-540_v0.71. Both folders contain the following, two folders called w2k and w98 and an application called simodrm. I plugged the cable into the USB socket of my computer and plugged the other end of the cable into my mobile phone but I could not see where to or how to transfer my photos and videos between my mobile phone and the computer. Could anyone explain to me the process involved in getting the data cable to start working and how I can then use it?

A support engineer that my Dad uses directed me to this link which states that my cable is not supported. What exactly does that mean?

http://www.benqmobile.com/cds/front...27443,00. html

I told the seller know about the problems that I am having and he said, “it does sound like a PC configuration problem.” He also directed me to this forum for help.

My operating system is Windows XP and my mobile phone is a Siemens M65 if that is of any help.

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks.

Install Mobile Phone Manager. It will have everything you need.

Posted by: Rudiger

I installed Mobile Phone Manager from this page,

http://www.benqmobile.com/cds/front....html#co ntent

Now on my desktop it has taken away the compressed (zipped) folder and the normal folder that I had. There is now a compressed (zipped) folder called MPMSetup3.04.40.48.4_SmartSync_en-EN and when I click on it the following comes up “The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.”

What do I do?

Posted by: 4mula1

Download it again. Something went wrong the first time. Once you have the file, you will need to extract the contents. Then run the installer. I would recommend the MPM for the S75 or SL75. It's a newer version and still supports the older phones of the 55 and 65 generation.

I have downloaded Mobile Phone Manager, extracted the contents of file and now have the original Compressed (zipped) folder and a new normal folder. Both folders contain a ReadMe folder, Data1, Mobile Phone Manager (with ‘Windows installer package’ below it), Read Me (HTML Document), setup (bitmap image), setup (Setup Launcher Siemens AG).

Is that the Mobile Phone Manager-Windows installer Package?
Do I run the installer from the new normal folder?

Thank you for your help so far, really appreciate it.

Yes, that's the one. Just double click on it and follow on screen instructions.

You should also make sure you have driver for that USB cable installed.

1. When you connect cable to pc, does windows prompt you to install any drivers? or to locate any software?
Does it show any new devices under device manager?

If false, that means either windows has already completed install driver for data cable or it tried and failed.

2. If it does ask you, chose to manually install driver, which you can download from here -> Click me
Extract dl file, and driver is located in Windows_XP folder-> siusbmod.inf

Try that and let us know how it goes.
Cheers

*Edit
I forgot to add. Cable should work for photo/tones transfer but you can't use
it to flash your phone with newer firmware.

Cheers for your help mate but I’m still having a few problems.

The first thing I installed was the driver software from this page,
http://www.benqmobile.com/cds/front....html#co ntent
but when I installed Mobile Phone Manager it disappeared from my desktop.

I have not connected cable to PC since I tried it just after I downloaded the driver before coming onto this forum. I have not connected cable since because I am afraid the whole thing will not work if I do it before everything is installed as I read that somewhere.

The main purpose I want to use for the cable is to transfer photos and videos from phone to computer. Anything else I find I can do with it would be a bonus for me really.

So anyway, when I double clicked on Mobile Phone Manager-Windows Installer Package and hit run it said, “1:This installation can not be run by directly launching the MSI package; you must run setup.exe.” So I installed setup.exe and at the end of installation it restarted my computer. On my desktop I now have the following icons, Mobile Phone Manager, Phone Explorer, Siemens GPRS, Modem Assistant and Siemens SmartSync.

So I tried to run Mobile Phone Manager-Windows Installer Package now that I have installed setup.exe but the same thing comes up (“1:This installation can not be run by directly launching the MSI package; you must run setup.exe.”)

Should I try installing setup.exe again?

What do I do? Please help.

Rudiger,
All you have to do to install Siemens Mobile Manager is this:
1. Run setup.exe [you already did this. Few times already]
2. After your pc restarts, just double click on Mobile Phone Manager Icon and make sure that program starts.
2.1 Do not run Mobile Phone Manager-Windows Installer Package again.
3. If 2=true, then close MPM and connect your USB data cable.
4. At this point XP should ask you to install drivers and if you want to manually or automatically locate it. Chose manual.
5. Point to location where you have download file form link provided to you in my previous post. Link
6. Follow on screen instructions and let xp complete driver install for your USB data cable.
7. Connect your phone to USB data cable.
8. Start Siemens Mobile Manager.
9. Wait a 20sec to see if mobile manager is able to automatically detect phone.
10. If that's true, you are all set and ready to start transferring files.
11. If it fails, come back and let us know.
Good luck

1. Have done this once.
2. The MPM starts; it is a rectangular box with many different icons in it.
2.1 I have not been able to run this once.
3.Connected USB data cable (without phone connected to it). Nothing happened, so I know from one of your earlier posts it has either “already completed install driver for data cable or it tried and failed.”

I have just looked on Siemens website and seen that there appears to be two different driver software downloads. The first thing I did was download the driver software from this page, http://www.benqmobile.com/cds/front....html#co ntent
But I went to Troubleshooting, then into ‘9. Driver Software for Data Cable USB DCA-540’ and there is another driver software download there (but it doesn’t seem to bring up the correct link when I try to link it) and I have not downloaded this. I think these are two different downloads because the one I downloaded is zip, 56 Kb and the other is zip, 1250kb. Do I need to download this???

In My Computer under ‘Other’ there is an icon called ‘Siemens Device.’

Haven’t done 4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10 because nothing happened at 3.

Thanks again for your help Bokito. If anyone else can help, please feel free to.

Rudiger,
let try this once more:

0. USB data cable is connected to your PC.

1.We have established that you have Siemens MPM installed. Since when you double click Mobile Phone Manager icon,
you see "rectangular box with lots of icons"

2. When you click on Options and in new window you select connections, what do you see there?

2.1 Use link in my previous post to download driver for your cable.
Let's just try to ignore downloading any other software from siemens.com

3. You have completed downloading driver and have extracted zip files to your desktop. Within extracted folder, go to
\Windows2000_XP locate and right click on file "siusbmod.inf"

4. Then, left click on "Install"

5. Click on Start -> Control Panel-> System-> within System window, click on Hardware Tab and select Device Manager

6. Do you see any devices that contain Siemens as their description? Or, do you see any devices that have a yellow box with red check mark beside it.

Okay, do this and let me know.
There is a bit more to go, but we'll do that tomorrow.

Connection type
Automatic or manual.
Automatic has dot in it.

Settings for manual connection.
Port has nothing in its box.
Phone: S55, SL 55, M55, C55 and other 2003 or earlier models.

Then there is a Reset and Help button at the bottom.

When I clicked on that link my Norton Anti-virus popped up a few times saying a recent attempt to attack my computer was blocked. Is that normal???
I downloaded driver but when I went to click on it “The Compressed (zipped) Folder is invalid or corrupted.” Downloaded it again, this time successfully. Hit install on siusbmod, nothing much seemed to happen to show that it was installed.

No. Nothing that contains Siemens as description, no yellow boxes or red check marks.

Thanks for the help.

A few days ago I made some good progress with my cable. I was working at it one day and I ended up successfully downloading the drivers for it. I was able to transfer the contents of my phone to the MPM. I definitely transferred my mobile phone book because I was able to see it and I think I was able to transfer the rest of the data in one big transfer. I think I backed it up the data and it is in the back up/restore part of MPM. The data went to my MPM and it didn’t take anything off my phone, which is fine.

Now on my MPM when I connect my data cable to my phone and plug it in it says, “No telephone connected.” I had to go into GPRS Modem Assistant again and go through the whole process I had done a few days ago. But when I click on GPRS Modem Assistant it says, “The software you are installing for this hardware: GPRS via COM has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility.” I continued it anyway.

Then it said:

You are being continued GPRS via COM.
You are in United Kingdom.
Please select your service provider- Orange UK
T-Mobile UK
Vodafone

Why is there no Siemens? I just left it on the first one, Orange UK.

I hit Connect to the Internet.
It says, “An error occurred during connection setup.
There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device).
(error 692)”

I went onto this page it says that my Data Cable USB DCA-540 is not supported,
http://www.benqmobile.com/cds/front...A130779,00.html

“Data Cable DCA-500 (serial->serial) / Data Cable USB DCA-510 (USB->serial, use only COM port 1 to 9). Please note that the Data Cable USB DCA-540 (USB->USB) is NOT supported.”

What does that mean???

If there is anyone who thinks they could help, please do.

Sorry for the delay in my response, but here goes...

MPM comes with all of the drivers you need. The DCA-540 by itself does not need a driver. The driver you are installing is for a GPRS modem for the PC. Basically when you connect your PC to the mobile via the DCA-540 you can use the GPRS connection on your mobile to access the internet.

My setup is quite different from yours, in that I have both a DCA-540 and DCA-510 connected. I had originally been using the DCA-540 with my SX1 (as an early adopter it was included with my handset) and was given the 510 which I used with the 55 and 65 series phones for not only firmware updates but also data transfer, since the SX1 was hogging the 540. The warning you see about the cable not being compatable with your mobile is only for firmware updates. Normal data transfer will work just fine.

What I will recommend to you is that you uninstall and GPRS modems and COM ports linked to a Siemens device in your hardware manager. Uninstall MPM.

Now install only MPM, do not install the drivers for the cable. You can leave your cable plugged into your PC while you do all of this, the PC doesn't recognize the cable, only the device attached to it. Once everything is reinstalled start MPM. Once MPM is finished loading plug in your mobile and give it a minute. If it still doesn't detect the mobile, you may have to add a little bend to the connection. Put a moderately heavy object on top of the housing over the mobile connector. Now place something under your mobile to prop it up. Is your mobile dtected now? If not, try flexing it the other direction. I have to do the former when using my 510 to get a proper connection.

Try that and post your results.

Cheers for the help mate.

But before I start uninstalling GPRS modems and COM ports linked to a Siemens device in my hardware manager, should I uninstall the drivers I have installed? I installed 2 different drivers from the Siemens website, both have one zipped folder and one normal folder. I also installed 1 driver from the link provided by Bokito, which has one zipped folder and one normal folder.
If I should uninstall these drivers do I just delete them from my desktop?

Is hardware manager the only place I should uninstall GPRS modems, COM ports linked to a Siemens device and MPM?

Posted by: Rudiger

I just went ahead with deleting the 3 drivers (6 folders altogether) from my desktop and then deleting them from recycle bin as I need to get this sorted out ASAP.

Done.

I did this. So I connected my phone to the cable, which was already plugged in, and it prompted me to download drivers (not as in the drivers which come up as folders) which I completed. Opened up MPM and it said, “No telephone connected.” I gave it a few minutes but nothing changed.

On the ReadMe in MPM folder it says,

Quote:
GPRS modem connection via USB cable (65 series only)

When using a USB cable to connect your 65 series device to the PC, please make sure that Windows properly recognized the phone and attached it to a COM port in the modem settings before starting GPRS Modem Assistant (the recognition may take up to 10 seconds).
Otherwise GPRS MA will not be able to find the modem and start the device search again.

How do I make sure that Windows properly recognises the phone and how do I attach it to a COM port in the modem settings? I think it could help.

Any help will be much appreciated thanks.
