v400 text message memory

i've got a v400.
the text message inbox will only store about 17 messages before it says it's full. isn't it supposed to store hundreds? i'm assuming the problem is that it is storing the messages to the sim card instead of the phone memory, because when i switch the sim to a different phone the messages are there.
so basically can anyone tell me how to switch it from storing messages from the sim card to storing them to the phone?
there is no option in the menus, as far as i'm aware.
