WM5 Issues with DRM Media - Help!

Well, after playing around with it forever, I've finally found the problem.

Windows Media Player Error Message Help

You've encountered error message 80070428 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Cannot sync the file
Windows Media Player cannot sync the protected file. Typically, this error occurs when you try to sync a protected file to a Windows Mobile 5.0-based device that cannot handle more than 25 protected files.

Microsoft has revised Windows Mobile 5.0 to fix the problem and has made the fix available to device manufacturers and mobile operators for testing on their devices and for distribution to their customers.

To find out if the update will be available for your device, contact your device manufacturer or mobile operator (the update is not available directly from Microsoft).

Okay, yes, this easily eplains the exact problem I'm having. Didn't have this issue on my SMT5600 and apparently it's because it wasn't WM5. Microsoft indicates there's a fix out there somewhere, but after all my searching, I can't find it. Does anyone know how / where I can locate this fix? If it's just a simple registry tweak, I just need to know the location. I keep looking but can't find one that looks similar. I'd really like to get more than 25 sings on my 1gb card!!!!

So no one has any ideas on this one?

Well, what I can add is that Yahoo Music worked fine with my SMT5600 (WMP10 on WM2003) but doesn't work at all on i-Mate SP5 (WMP10 on WM2005). This is, of course, very disappointing and obviously a step back. Yahoo Music support says the SP5 isn’t supported and i-mate support doesn’t respond to questions regarding this “DRM bug” (Digital Rights Management) nor when it will be fixed.

There was a note posted previously here at HF that this "DRM bug" would be fixed with the upcoming release of updated ROMS from phone manufacturers as Microsoft has released the fix to them along with the much anticipated new enhancements for push email in the feature pack dubbed Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP).

I hope this WMP DRM bug is fixed in MSFP, a.k. AKU2 (Adaption Kit Update 2), but somehow I’m not optimistic as the feature pack seems named to address only message and security, not DRM.

Thought I would add to this...

I have the T-Mobile SDA, and have this same problem (I use Napster-to-go). I can synchronize only up to 25 DRM files--doesn't seem to affect MP3s or non-protected WMA.

I called T-Mobile support, and they referred me to Tech Support @ HTC. I spent some time with one of their techs who said that they were just becoming aware of this problem, but didn't have any patches made yet. No ETA on when/if a patch would become available. At least they know about it, I guess.

Anyway, the technician said that he would follow-up in approx. 2 weeks to let me know if any progress had been made.

If you want to try calling, the number is 877-878-7904. Please note, this is supposedly a dedicated line for the T-Mobile SDA/MDA, so they may not offer help for other devices. I figured I'd share though, maybe if enough people call and log this complaint, they'll do something about it.

In the meantime, I've decided to try a solution of sorts. I learned of a program called "Tunebite" that converts WMA into MP3. It's not quick, but is fairly easy, and takes care of the DRM problem.

... and they wondered how I got the number. They answered it "HTC" so I guess it's a service run by HTC to support T-mobile and other carriers here in the US. Apparently, consumers do not generally call. They sometimes get transfered to the number but in general the carriers call directly.

Anyway, they said that the update from MS is in beta. It is available to MS employees and a few large corporate customers. He didn't know when it would be released but he did say the beta has been pushed back a couple of times. I'm not sure if that's a good sign or a bad one. He did say that it was highly sought after so they would make it available as soon as possible. I hope bluetooth H2DP profile is also included in the update.

If anyone knows how to get their hands on the beta and would be willing to share it, I'd love to experiment. The HTC america site has the current ROM available for download so we can always go back if it doesn't work well.

So now it's almost June and still nothing... MS has known about the problem for a while (and fixed it) yet here we are still waiting for a patch. BTW, HTC never called me back. I am amazed at how slowly things are creeping along for WM5 smartphone. In addition to the DRM fix, I'm still waiting for a fully-supported tabbed browser for my SDA (PIE no do tabs, Opera 8.0 has some quirks - like using T9)--Minimo would be nice, if only it was supported in WM5 smartphone edition

FYI - Yahoo Music does work with SP5. But with the 25 file limitation. I did read somewhere that, the limit applies per playlist. Though I haven't tried to verify that splitting it into multiple 25 song playlists will get around the problem. Anyone esle try this yet?

Well, I finally got to the bottom of my Yahoo Music/iMate SP5 25 song limitation. Yesterday I finally got around to upgrading the ROMs with the latest from clubimate.com and noticed the following on their "Under Investigation" section on the Known Issues page:

Customers may find that they are only able to synchronize up to 25 songs with DRM protection at any one ActiveSync session. To overcome this, customers should disconnect and reconnect the device to PC after each batch of 25 songs in an album or playlist. have been synchronized.

It worked! I synchronized one playlist with 17 songs, unplugged my phone from my computer, replugged it in and was able to get another album of 12 songs on there.

So, a little bit of a hassle, but not to bad and now I can start to fill up my 1Gig storage card and enjoys some tunes.

Actually, Cingular should soon be releasing their 2125 update which should be AKU2.3 or above. If so, the patch would probably be installed already!
