Seems if I might have solved my own problem here.... Anyone know the difference in the DCA-510 and DCA-540 data cables? I've been trying update my phone to the latest firmware but after the update detects my com port it shuts down my phone and the update says "Please Wait" for well over 30 minutes. I just boght the 510 cable but the website says I need the 540 cable. Help please

DCA-510(USB<->Serial - general data transfer + firmware updating + batt. charging)
DCA-540(USB<->USB - general data transfer)
I'm not 100% sure.

-For the firmware update, DCA-510 is the correct cable to have.
-Run the update with phone powered OFF. And then follow manual update sequence instructions.
-Make sure to select correct com port. Watch for the prompt on the screen.
It will ask you to press on/off button on your phone to initialize firmware upgrade transfer.

-Make a backup of all your files; Have your battery fully charged; From device manager, set your com port speed to 128000bps;
-Turn off battery charge switch on cable.

good luck.

Thanks for the information. All goes well until I turn the phone on; once I do that the update just says "Press the on/off button...." The update never starts. Just before that step, the update says to turn the phone on and press the button until the update starts. I've held the button nearly two minutes and the update never starts. Any ideas?

Also: is there a quick way to tell that the phone is able to communicate with the PC? I have a feeling the problem with updating is that the phone is not getting a connection to the PC.

Do you have DCA-510 cable?
When you did update for the first time, was the red LED ON or OFF?

If it was ON, turn it off and connect cable to PC. Run update file S66_549500.
Power up your phone, connect data cable to phone. And start the process. It should detect it now.

Yes, run Siemens mobile phone manager. See if it detects the phone.
Also, check your device manager. With cable plugged in, you
should see "Siemens USB Data Cable" under COM ports.

I've always tried it with the charging function turned OFF. If I try to update it like you mention here; the phone turns itself off after the update detects the mobile is on com3. It then sits on the following screen and never changes.

"The mobile is found at COM3. You must not change anything from now on! Please wait...."

I can see the cable in the device manager, but I still don't think the phone is actually communicating with the PC. When using Phone Explorer (Mobile Phone Manager has never worked; always freezes on the splash screen) it often tells me "Please connect your telephone with the PC", even though the phone is plugged in and the cable is in the device manager. When I just plug in the cable it shows up in the device manager (phone not connected).

This thing is annoying me to the end! Thank you for helping me.

You should try to get mobile phone manager working as well.

You said mobile phone manager freezes at splash screen. How long did you wait?
By default MPM is set to automatic connection type and "freeze" part
happens because it's scanning all available com ports. It could take over a minute.

Did you try re-installing MPM?

Without phone connected, start MPM and go to Options->Connection->Type: manual,
select COM3(COM3-USB) as default port. Also, make sure that correct phone type is selected.

In device manager, set COM3 to default state and then change baud rate to 128000bps or 57600bps.
