Transflash Memory Card Help

I bought a 512Mb transflash memory card one month ago, and today I have reached to the point where my memory card was full, so i decided to check exactly where it got full. I checked it out and it said 483MB was the capacity of the card, my question is what happened? I thought the card was suppose to be 512MB and not 483MB

it is a 512 card but after formatting it, it becomes a lil less. Just like hard drives
