Small phone, great camera, plus Mp3 playback - what should I get?

Hi All,

I've currently got a v635 with a 512mb TF card. I like this phone, but I know there's something better out there. My major annoyance is the mp3 playback - the DAP is kind of a clunky interface (not showing the song name when playing off a list) so basically the only way I can use it is on "shuffle all songs" mode. The Java player takes 30+ seconds to load, which is unacceptable in my opinion.

Photos on the v635 are pretty good, the 1.3 MP camera is OK, but I'm sure there's better out there.

Basically, I want the smallest (and thinnest) phone that takes an excellent digital photo and has excellent Mp3 playback.

Here are some of the phones I've considered:

V3i w/iTunes - I don't like the 100 song cap, but I'd tolerate it in order to have the iTunes interface. The camera is about the same as the v635, so the quality meets the bare minimum. Also, I love the look of this phone.

V3x - back to the clunky DAP interface for mp3, but the camera is better at 2MP. Also a better screen, though the phone is slightly larger in size.

What else is out there, especially from other manufacturers? I only really know about the Motorola phones. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

You may want to consider the Sony Ericson w550, w800, or w900 phones. the w550 only has 1.5 MP, but the w800 is 2, as is the w900. They are supposed to have great MP3 playback and good cameras. I won't buy them (can't get past the rootkit thing, among other reasons) but that may not bother you.

I am considering the Samsung D600. Has a 2.1 MP camera, transflash slot and good (albeit not great) MP3 playback. You didn't mention a carrier, and the triband vs quadband issue is important.

Thanks, the Sonys do look interesting, I'm going to look into them more.

I'd be using this on Rogers in Toronto, which is a GSM provider. I'm not sure if they use the 850 band or not, perhaps another user from this area could comment?

I'm not familiar with the rootkit issue - is that something which stops the phone from functioning?

Thanks for your reply!

w600 is a 1.2 MP camera, which isn't that good anyway. try the s710. the camera is better on that

The rootkit issue refers back to an event last fall. It became known that Sony-BMG Music had copy protection on music CDs that installed on users computers without completely disclosing what they were doing. It used rootkit technology, a way of making files and processes invisible to users. It is commonly used by hackers to install keyloggers and trojan horse programs on target computers.

This particular one inadvertently (as far as anybody can tell) opened up a backdoor on users computers. Sony handled the whole situation very poorly. Because of this and other reasons I no longer trust Sony, and will not buy any of their products.
