EDGE on Cingular 8125 - so slow all of a sudden?

I heard about them auditing PDAs/Treos using the MediaNet Unlimited plan and force them to go with PDA Unlimited well, maybe instead of doing that they are going to make it so painful to remain on MediaNet that you will want to move?

Since I got the 8125, I've done speedtests on www.dslreports.com/mspeed several times and when I'm on EDGE I usually get 120kbps+ on average.

Since this past weekend, no matter how many times I tried I keep getting like 30-50kbps!!

This is when I see the E on my 8125 and I have like 5 full bars. This is totally bizzarre - are they limiting the speed or is the tower I'm accessing just maxed out???

I'm at work right now in NYC Midtown east (Park Ave - North of Grand Central).

Same story here although I didn't test it before (just signed up for free unlimited MEdia Net for the first month). With MEdia Net Proxy server, I can bearly reach 100kbps. Without proxy server, I can only reach 50k.

Cingular's network right now is so F-ed up that it surprises me that I can even get on the net with my 8125.

Jesus, here we are almost two years later with this blue/orange integration BS and they still cant seem to get it straight.

good God......

I was going to post the opposite, today my 8125 edge feels nice and snappy....I thought for a second that I was on wifi but nope, not on.

I did turn off the proxy yesterday to get agile to work, maybe that helped?

Edge speeds do suck pretty badly. I'm getting anywhere from 60-80 right now. I turned off my proxy when I first got my 8125 to be able to use wifi. I just went to those settings to try it with it on, and now I don't remember what the proxy server settings are supposed to be. Anyone know? I'm curious to see if it helps when using media net to have it on or not.

Wirelessly posted (HTC-8100/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

It's wireless.cingular.com

Edge/Gprs in my area is very hit and miss. Cingular never claims there are problems but sometimes I can't connect for days at a time. But, when it does work my speeds are always 120kb+, and that's with the proxy off.

I found that it helps, with latency but not directly transfer rate, to manually input the DNS server number in the advanced dialup options.

For Cingular, it's 66.102.163.231 and 66.102.163.232.

Thanks

I am consistently getting better speeds with proxy on using media net. Examples:
On-150,163,174
off-77,107,130

I wish that the phone could remember my proxy settings though. When I have to uncheck it to use wifi, it does not remember it and I have to retype it when I want to use it again. I know there must be a way. Better yet, could someone help me set it up with to where when I use my wifi it automatically uses the settings with proxy off and vice versa automatically turn it on when I connect using media net? I know I sound very computer illitereate, and I'm not, its just that wm5 is like learning how to "walk" all over again it feels like at times.

You realize why you see this right? With the proxy on, you are getting the speed from you to the proxy only, it has nothing to do with the actual speed test.

The proxy to the site will be very very fast because it's probably over fiber.

The connection between you and the proxy is also very fast because it's all on Cingular's network. Browsing with proxy SHOULD ALWAYS be faster.

Technically, even with proxy off, you are probably getting the same speeds/bandwidth but because there is no proxy your device is directly connecting to the website which is adding latency and delays.

Only way to really test connection speed therefore is with PROXY OFF.

mobilehavoc,
I'm confused. It sounds to me like your saying that using the proxy is not really faster than not using it, but then the comment that "browsing should always be faster" throws me. Is browsing going to be faster with it? I used to use a proxy with my desktop when I had dway satellite. I had to use it to get it to work at all. With this phone though, it works with or without. It just seemed to be faster by the speed tests.

What I'm saying is that it is always going to be faster because all you're doing is connecting to a Cingular server (which is doing all the work).

The speedtest is thrown off because you're not actually connecting to the site but rather the Cingular proxy server is and passing that info to you.

HOWEVER, in reality your actual EDGE/GPRS connection speed is exactly the same in both situations.

i.e.

Without Proxy -> PPC connects directly to dslreports.com

With Proxy -> PPC connects to Cingular Proxy. Cingular Proxy connects to dslreports.com. PPC transmits/receives data with Cingular Proxy. Cingular proxy transmits/receives data with dslreports.com.

In both cases, the connection from your PPC to the NETWORK is the same.

So running a speed test with proxy server ON is not accurate - that's my main point.

In the end, it's personal preference - be warned though that sites which are looking for or designed for PDAs (looking for Pocket IE) will not work if you're using a proxy since the proxy will most likely identify itself as IE 6.0 or something else.
