Try hitting the end button twice. `red button`

I think you can also press and hold the End button for 3-4 seconds. But twice is faster

It doesn't really "close" it though, you still have to go to memory and end it. Is there a program which lets you truly close a program?

There are two ways of doing it, if you hold the end button down for a couple seconds, you should see the Edge/Gprs icon switch just to an E or a G without the arrows. that will terminate the connection alltogether, and you can close whatever program by using either a 3rd party program or going into memory. Also, if you don't want to do it that way, if you don't mind using a registry editer , there's an edit you can do which activates a disconnect button and a timer, i installed it and it did actually a very good job. Very useful. Here it is :

You need to add a DWORD called Flags2 to the HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone Subkey.
After changing the value to either 8 or 16, you can tap on the EDGE icon on top and it will show you how long you are connected, and give you the option to disconnect.

Add a 'Disconnect' button (and Timer) to the Connection List for GPRS
To add a Disconnect button: HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone\Flags2 = 8 (DWORD decimal)
To add a Disconnect button and a timer display showing how long GRPS is in use for the session: HKLM\ControlPanel\Phone\Flags2 = 16 (DWORD decimal)

It worked for me, and that worked well.
