mini review of LG CU320

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

ok got the phone last night. here are a few pictures of it. my review will be compared to my 2125 and s710
first is the size looks kind of big compared to my 2125 but not uncomfortable big

]

and the last one is a picture taken with it. the other are taken with a s710 sorry crappy light with flash

first to start off with my dislikes. for some reason it like to hang on to crappy 3g signal (thats what its has on top of my bars) even though there is a stronger g signal. thats pretty much so far since i have only had it for a day.

the likes are as follows the bluetooth works good. it found my scala 500 the first time and had no problems paring with it. the screen is sharp but compared to my 2125 (qvga) looks ok. the screen appears to be a great improvement or the lg 1400 and lg a7110. it has mp3 ringtones that are nice and loud. i have download some custom songs already and had no problems. the speaker phone is ok not super loud, but again loud enough. the camera is ok has three sizes 320x240 640x480 and 1280x960. the video looks pretty good, two sizes 176x144 and 320x240.
the web is pretty fast compared to edge although i cant do a speed test because it gives me errors when doing it . the cingular video looks pretty good dosent stutter or pixelate, and it work when i have 3g and g. the speaker on the headst sounds clear and loud, ill post more after a couple of days

Are you using a 3G SIM in it? Is manual network select disabled? My understanding was that manual selection was allowed on the new SIMs.

Also, what is the build quality like?

EDIT: Removed brain-dead question. It's an LG, not a Samsung. Doh!

Posted by: cjmedina

no network select, using the 3g sim build quality is the same a lg push to talk or atleast if feels that way

Forgot to add that you can multi task on the phone. Just like a smartPhone.ie leaving it running in the backround and go back to them. So far four things running

how is the AIM on it? specifically the buddy list? is it limited to 20 buddies?

All Mobile IM clients are limited to the Mobile Device buddy group which I believe can store 30 buddies. This is not dependent on the specific phone, but is a limitation of AOL. When it detects a Mobile IM program, it puts that little cell phone icon next to your name on other people's buddy lists, and it only gives you access to the Mobile Device group.

The only way around this is to fool the system into thinking you are a regular computer, in which case no phone icon will appear next to your name and you will have full buddy list access. As far as I know, the only phone sold this way is the T-Mobile Sidekick. All other phones from all other carriers work the other way.

except for a symbian phone with a 3rd party app right?

Posted by: DA_KING_OF_SSG

battery life?

Posted by: cjmedina

2 days of heavy usage. bluetooth on, streaming video ,25 text, 1.5 hrs of talk each day. but it does have a nice feature when you have no battery it turns off the back light but not the phone and is good for another 20 mins

Posted by: substance12

has the screen started to become scratched? i guess that question is premature. All my nokia bar phones have all been extremely scratched up from just being in my pocket. I'm wondering if LG has the same problem.

Got a screen protector on it and keep it in a case so no

What comes in the box? Does it come with a memory card or headphones?

Posted by: Avironeur

No headphones, no memory card...standard Cingular fare....charger, phone, battery, battery cover, manual.

Yes, some of the 3rd party apps disguise themselves as regular desktop IM programs.

awesome thanks

Posted by: Avironeur

IM+ java edition is a pay app but it works great and is not limited to 30 on the buddy list and mimics a regular desktop client (no one sees mobile status when you are signed on...)

When I tried the CE500, it came with earbuds and a memory card.

Of course, that came from Best Buy at the time, so that may be why.

To the OP: can you tell me if the alarm has a snooze, and for how long? Can it have multiple alarms like the Motos? I checked out an LG slider phone today and it didn't have a snooze on it, and only had one alarm.

Thanks,

Super

just tryed and it has snooze,
it list 5 diffrent snooze times in order
after 5mins
after 10 mins
after 30 mins
after 1 hr
after 2hrs.
you can pick the sound you want to hear as well

Posted by: Superguy

Sweet. Thanks.

Can you have multiple alarm times (ie one for work, one for the weekend, etc)? My old V551 allowed for 5 separate ones, which was really nice.

Thanks for answering my questions. I wish the corp stores here had them so I could just play with it myself.

Posted by: cjmedina

its limted to 5 diffrent ones

the sims both say 64k but on the back of the 3g ones its blues and says 3g on it

Posted by: Superguy

One other question? Can you receive calls and talk without opening the slider, or is the mic down with the dial pad?

I would like to do this also (use the LG in a non 3G area) with my older 32k Pac Bell SIM card. Anyone know if I will have problems with this?

Posted by: cartier717

the sim i got is blue on the back but it does not say 3G

????anyone??

I would think that it would work fine. But obviously you wouldn't have access to a 3G network if one existed. Using your non-3G SIM should be fine, though. Remember, however, that I said should. Some phones have problems with the older 32k SIMs, and some of the newer phones had trouble with the 64K SIMs when they first came out.

Posted by: Interpol

i would think the 64k sim would work fine here in atlanta minus 3g data..weird that this didnt launch in there home city first with the other cities..??!?!?
Another question i had is im curious how loud the Ear volume is on this phone given the location of the speaker, camera is smack in the middle of where the ear speaker should be....

Posted by: Superguy

If you buy this phone from Cingular, you should get a new SIM card. Even my wife's X497, a non 3G phone, was sent with a new 3G SIM when we upgraded.

My guess is that it has some network updates that aren't on the original SIM cards, but I could be wrong.

Is there file transfer over the Bluetooth? Can you pair with a PDA, or Laptop??

Anyone have an answer to this?

In any case, I called in, and ordered the CU320 yesterday. Should be delivered early next week. I will answer then if no one else has.

I asked the Cingular rep if I would recieve a new SIM card with my purchase, and she said yes I would. Not like I need it though since there is no 3G in my area anyways. I will try it out with my old Pac Bell 32k SIM first, and post the results.

Posted by: cjmedina

the mike is inside the slider on the bottom but you can hear

Posted by: squish37

Got mine the other day and yes you can receive calls with the slider closed. You can call numbers that are in your call lists with the slider closed as well. However if you are using the phone with the slider open and turn on the speaker phone you can not close the phone without ending the call. Of course the speaker phone works fine with the phone closed as well. The exception to the call ending if you close the phone is if you are using a bluetooth headset with the phone open and close it you will not end the call.

Received my phone today. I live in a non-3G area, and the 3G SIM card did not work for me (could just be a bad SIM though). I popped in my old 32k Pac Bell SIM, and the phone worked fine. So far I like it!

I also live in a non-3g area and have had no issues with the 3g sim. It probably needs to be activated.

i just got orb to work with the lg. i had been able to do it with samsung but not the lg keep getting an error. when i did the speed test. but got past it and can now stream my own 3gp videos from my computer. pretty nice

Posted by: jettaguy87

FWIW, I work at an agent store and I threw my 64k (non 3G) SIM in the CU320 and I was able to check out the NCAA highlights from Saturday through Cingular Video. Luckily I have unlim. data so I had no worries but I was suprised that it worked without a true 3G SIM. Anyone else been able to do this? Sweet phone especially for an LG btw.

Mike
