SMT5600 trouble

My friend gave me his SMT 5600. The battery was completely dead and he only had the USB dongle. For some reason, the phone won't charge from my USB port. I've installed ActiveSync but AS can't pair with the phone unless it's on, and it's not on because it has no battery. It seems like a vicious cycle!

Make sure that the USB cable is plugged into a USB port on the computer rather than one off an unpowered hub. It might take a while before the phone gets enough power to function.

Alright, I'm doing this now. I'm just concerned that the LED isn't coming on...basically, there are no signs that the battery is charger or that the phone is functional

It's charging now, but there's a buzzing in the earpiece that the person I'm calling can also hear. It's pretty loud and annoying. Any idea?

A further development on the buzzing issue - it apparently only happens when I make the call, not when I receive a call.
