for some reason or another, iTunes is not recognizing my v3i.
any solutions?

Try reformatting your TF card from the phones menu, worked for me after I f**ed with the card's contents!

should I still have to do this even tho the phone is fresh out of the box??

NO, you should not!! Change Menu>> Settings>>Connection>>USB Settings to Memory Card from Data/Fax. Once you are finished with iTunes, switch the setting back.
