Can't get MPT to work--missing cable driver?

I just got a v557, along with MPT and an OEM data cable. I've installed MPT, but when I get to the Phone Setup part, it just doesn't do anything. This is the second time I've installed MPT (after getting frustrated and uninstalling). The first time I got Windows errors that the USB device wasn't recognized. I'm not getting that now, just nothing happens when I try to set up the phone within MPT. Is there a missing USB cable driver? I searched here and Moto's site, but didn't see anything. Any help would be appreciated.

is this: Win2K/WinXP Motorola DriverPack, Version 2.9 what would help?

EDIT: i tried it and it still does nothing. MPT just says my phone is initialising and does nothing else

OK, now it will sync the calendar and contacts, but it won't transfer media files to/from the phone. It says the phone isn't connected. Arrrgh!!
