Tutorial for ringtones/wallpaper for sliders

First of all I would like to say that most carriers are going to tell you that you can't get mp3 ringtones on your phone.

That's what i was told. Alot of people are saying that they have tried mobile phones tools and since they could'nt use that program they thought that it isn't possible. But i have a se44 slider and i have been able to put mp3s and wallpapers/screen savers on there "the hard way" So yes it is possible at leaste for the se44 and se47. this may work for other phones but i havent tried it. First of all you need some software. You need a copy of Bitpim 0.7.23 i think this is an older version but its the one i found to work. You also will need Irfanview (to make wallpapers), and a program called AUDACITY with the LAME encoder.

Also of course you need a data cable. I have found that the cheap cables work fine. I got one for 8 dollars of of ebay and it came with tons of ringtones and wallpapers etc.

First lets start with ringtones:
Open Audacity. Go to file open, then in file type select mp3, choose your mp3 then click ok or double click the mp3, wait for it to load, when it does load you will see a track in blue with a box on the left with some info in it, the box will be blue. When you click on the title of the song a drop-down menu should appear this is what you will be able to make most of your changes with.

You will have two tracks (right and left). The next step is to click on “split stereo track”, then it will actually label them by right and left (it will show two boxes on the left of each track). When you have two different tracks pick which one (left or right) sounds the best (you can do this by clicking on “solo”). When you have picked the one you like click on the x to eliminate the other. Now you are going to highlight the part of the track you want, one minute is good because the voicemail kicks in at 55 seconds, then click on “edit” then “trim” It will cut off the rest of the song. Then once again click on the song title and click on “mono” so it recognizes it as a mono track. The important part: you are now going to click on “set rate” and put it to 16000Hz, the track should expand, then select the whole track by leaving the mouse button down and moving it across the track, it should highlight. Then go to “effect” at the top bar and click on “change speed” then enter 175. Then click on “ok” it should take a minute to change the speed. If you would like you can play it to see how it sounds, it should sound normal but with lower quality. The play button might look different but that is not important. Now you have to save it to the right kind of mp3. go to “ file” then “preferences” then at the bottom of that new window there will be “bit rate” set it to “24” like so: your ringtone is now ready for transfering to the phone

If you cannot change this or it looks disabled, you have not loaded the LAME encoder, after you download it, you click on find library and find where the encoder file is saved and select it, it should recognize it. After you have clicked on ok, you are going to go to “file” then “export as mp3” then choose where you want to save it and save it, it should take a while to save it. Usually the preferences are kept but if one time it does not play on your phone check the preferences (bit rate).

Now wallpapers:
There are two ways to do this. One is if you have doodler on your phone the other is if you don't. First of all, pick your image, it shouldnt be huge as it will look deformed when you resize it. You will need to open it with the copy of Irfanview that you have obtained, then go to “image” then “increase color depth” and set it to 24 BPP, if it does not let you go to “increase color depth” it means it is already best quality. Go back to “image” and click on “resize/resample” enter in 128x128. If it will not let you use these sizes then you cant use the image (unless you make it that size with anoughther program) alot of 128x128 wallpapers can be found on the net for free. Save as a bmp. Go to wherever you saved your file. It will show up as a irfanview file that says the name .bmp. you need to rename it to take off .bmp (example mydog.bmp, rename to mydog) this will turn into a file. windows wont be able to open it but it the phone will. you now have your wallpaper and it is ready to be put on the phone.

Putting your mp3s and wallpapers on the phone:
Ringtones-open you copy of bitpim. click on the file system tab. a plus sign should appear. click on it and a bunch of files should pop up.
Click on the + next to “user” then click on the + next to “ sounds” then click on the + next to “dnld”, you should see the titles of the ringtones you already have downloaded (remember do NOT try to fit more than ten ringtones in there, it will bug your phone)
Now right click on “dnld” then click on “new file” and chose the ringtones you have formatted as indicated in the rest of the article, and click ok it should take from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to load them onto the phone. Then (when it is done loading the ringtone) browse through your phone like you would normally do (NOT with your computer) and go to your ringtones menu, you should see your new ringtone, if it does not play then there is probably a problem with your ringtone formatting that you did on the computer (review the formatting part), if it works you are done, to delete ringtones right click on the ringtone name you want to delete (viewed in “dnld” in your file system) and click delete, it should disappear (DO NOT DELETE “DNLD” once again that is an important file)

Wallpapers
Method 1- for people with the program doodler on their phone:
plug the phone into the computer with your data cable. OK first thing, in the Kyocera se47 and se44 you have a game called “doodler” and a folder called “my pictures” where you save your doodles (this is the folder where your downloaded backgrounds will go to). First save a whole bunch of boring doodles just so they appear in that folder (they will be replaced later on, but you cannot replace something that isn’t there.)
Go to bitpim with your phone connected and pull up the filesystem, go to “user” , there will be a folder called “mypictures” open it by clicking on the + and you will see BMP01 and more if you have done more than one doodle, then right click any of those BMP files and click on “overwrite” then select the backgrounds you have already formatted and it will replace it with your picture/background you wanted to download on there.
When it is done loading the background the name will not change it will still be BMP01 or 02… this is good,
Go to your phone normally (without your computer) go in games as if you wanted to play doodler and go to the folder “my pictures and you should see your background (DO NOT CLICK ON EDIT IT WILL FREEZE YOUR PHONE) the just click on assign and then as “wallpaper” hit the red phone and it should show up.

For those of us that dont have doodler:
same as above: open bitpim click the plus, wait for a bunch of files to pop up
Under user right cluck screensaver and make new file. that is where your wallpaper will go. when your done, just unplug your phone and your images will be under my pictures.

i do not have a dnld subdirectory under "sounds". i do, however, have a "default" one that seems to have all the music for my phone including tetris and what not. i put an mp3 into there but it did not show up in the ringer type list on my phone.

could i just my a dnld directory under sounds or what

u ROCK ! but 1 thing , i used gagin to upload the file to my phone... is it true that if i delete the file from the phone menus that i will kill the phone?
i want to try Bitpim 0.7.23 , but i cant find that version anymore, it jumps from .62 to .9.00

any 1 got this file ?
