Configure Cingular 8125 as a dial up USB modem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I had some trouble getting this to work so I thought I'd post a faq explaining how to do it.

Driver Installation

1) Insert the CD that came with the phone into your drive. Close the window that opens up.

2) Open up Activesync and go to File - Connection Settings. Remove the check from the box next to "allow USB connections"

3) Connect your Cingular 8125 to your Computer via USB

4) On the 8125 go to Start - Programs - Modem Link

5) In Modem Link choose USB under Connection and wap.cingular under Access Point Name.

6) Choose "activate" in modem link

7) Your computer should recognize the device and an "add new hardware" wizard should appear.

8) Choose "No, not this time" and click next

9) Choose "Install from a list or specific location [Advanced]" and click next

10) Choose "Search for the best driver in these locations"

11) Check the box next to "Include this location in the search"

12) Browse to the Following location [CD Drive]:\OEM\APPS\Drivers\USB Modem

13) Click Next

14) A dialog box will pop up, click Continue Anyway

15) Click Finish to complete the driver installation

Connection setup

1) Go to Start - Control Panel - Network Connections

2) Choose "Create a new Connection"

3) Click Next

4) Choose "Connect to the Internet" and click Next

5) Choose "Set up my connection manually" and click Next

6) Choose "Connect using a dial-up modem" and click next

7) Choose any name you want for ISP Name and click Next

8) Type *99# in the Phone number field and click Next

9) User Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Confirm password: CINGULAR1
Note: the username and password need to be all in caps

10) Click Next

11) Click Finish

That's it, you should have a connection that will dial up to Cingular's GPRS network. If you have Edge service in your area you will get Edge speeds.

Can this phone be setup to connect to a dial-up service other than cingular's? For example, to my personal dial-up service.

Let's say I am on my laptop and want to use my phone (as a modem) to connect to my dial-up service.

Posted by: jvanbrecht

You could use it to connect to your own dialup service, but then you are going to be using voice minutes, and your speeds will vary from 14.4 to 28.8 analogue modem speeds.

Also, to the original poster, when you use your 8125 as a data device, do you noticed the connection status on your phone remaining as is showing your not using data (like it would be when you use the phone to connect).

Mine does not show I am connected to the data service on the phone itself, but I am definately connected. Even the connection manager shows that I am not connected, although when I try to connect to the data network from the phone it does say that its in use.

Posted by: beatniks3

realistically you won't see more than 9k on CSD.....

Posted by: Rino808

so with this dial up to cingular it is not coming off of your minutes??? i was woundering cause i have the pda plan.

Posted by: Steve83

Is this basically the same for any phone? Like my Z520a, for instance? Obviously, driver installation will vary, but the rest... And if I did have to use it thru voice dialup, I'd just substitute my dialup number where you have *99#, right? If I only use it in the evening, it wouldn't affect my minutes, right?

beatniks3
What does CSD stand for? Is there a thread with most of the abbreviations explained? TDMA, GSM, WAP, FAN...

Posted by: sachavez

Can any one tell me if is possible to receive or send a fax using the USB modem on this 8125?
If yes can you explain the procedure and the program to use?

Thank you

circuit switched data (99% sure)

for most acronyms, I use
http://www.acronymfinder.com/
the trick is finding out which one it is based on the topic you are dealing with. i go over there for car engine acronyms too.

steve, yes you are understanding how the csd commands would go in and how it would use nighttime mins at night.

bear with me because it was around the time i joined here that i was using csd, but I'm pretty sure i remembering trying it with my local isp and it worked.

you need to call or go to a corp store and make sure CSD is provisioned on your account. i'm not even sure what they call it anymore or if csd is provisioned with the media net packages or ppu.

anyway you set it up it is going to be slow. you will understand the true meaning of the word if you haven't had a connection with a top end of 9kb/s.

it wasn't ever a 100% connection either. sometimes i would have to restart my phone before csd would ever connect (using cingular's csd number)

Thanks

Here ya go.

Well, I did a bonehead thing. I clicked through to search for drivers and now things are not working. Which device do I need to apply the driver to in Device Manager?

Joe

The HTC Usb Modem.

I'm kinda new to this extra stuff you can do with this phone so can someone (anyone) tell me exactly how to use my phone as a dial up modem on my own internet service? and how exactly does this modem thing work >?

I would like to know myself!

Posted by: mrjkwik

If you are media max unlimited, does this method use data through that, or voice, or ppu?

Posted by: KikoKazuma

Media Net uses the wap.cingular access point name. When you create a dial-up networking connection and use the WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM username and CINGULAR1 password, it will use your Media Net plan.

I tried this, and Ive called Tech support for cingular... and this is going to sound bad.. but im actually a Cingular Wireless Employee and i still cant get it to work...

also i was told by Tech Support yesterday to use different info...

Username: ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Number: *99***1#

(i have a feeling that this is used for Laptop Connect, but because im an employee, i have all features on my SIM ) but still even with your settings i still run into same problem...

when i try to connect (weither it be VIA Bluetooth, or USB in Modem Link Mode) my 8125 disconnects from EDGE, then reconnects, but on my comp it still says Dialing *99***1#.. then it errors with a 777 error.. pictured below..

I was able to use Bluetooth, and shut off the phone radio on the 8125 and used that same settings i was given, and connected to the Treo 650 in our store (over bluetooth) and connected to the GPRS network on it... so i feel as if the settings are right for the DUN..

i think its the settings in the 8125 thats preventing it.. like something in connections like My ISP or MediaNet.. can you provide your settings or maybe some insight on this..

Thanks
~Mike

Use *99# for the number. I don't know why, but for whatever reason any other number wouldn't work for me when I tried.

So if i add the unlimited media net Plan then i'll have access to the internet without any extra charges?.. Is there a way they (cingular) will know i'm using this as a USB Modem? are there any restrictions as far as websites i may use?
Thanks

I'd like to know this as well. My reason is because I'm an ATTW customer and I have mmode, and so I can't connect to wap.cingular (obviously).

Posted by: Omega2008

Use the modem connect software that came with the 8125, there is no need to create a dial up connection. Its called USBDialer_modem.exe. Then go to Start, Programs, Modem Link In Modem Link choose USB under Connection and wap.cingular under Access Point Name Choose activate in modem link. It will ask you for the location of the driver, point it to the CD that came with your 8125. Once that is done, open USBDialer_modem.exe on your computer and put the following info:

Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
APN: Internet (yes this is correct)

Click on Dial, and volia! you have slow dial up speed internet access lol but hey if you need internet access its nice to know that you can do this. Now if you want to BT teather then you will have to create a new Dial Up Connection. But thats a whole different story.

Posted by: Omega2008

Oh and if you want to go Bluetooth well thats easy too. Just create a new dialup connection and use the settings that the orginal poster used, but when you select the modem select the BT dialup modem and your all set.

I'm using Modem Link on my 8125 with the HTC USB dial up connection on my XP computer. The computer connects, then registers with the network, then disconnects with a 734 error. I'm using WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM, Cingular1, and *99#. Everything seems to work, but I can't get beyond this error. Does anyone have any advice?

The password is CINGULAR1. All caps.

Posted by: mgparham

I actually did use CINGULAR1, just failed to type it in caps in my post. I've spent about 30 minutes with Cingular support this morning, and tried each of the settings below:

WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
CINGULAR1
*99#
*99***3#
Dialup Properties:
Security: Allow unsecured password
Networking: check TCP/IP; check Client for Microsoft Networks
PPP settings: enable LCP extensions; Negotiate multi-link
PPP setting: uncheck enable CCP extensions

I experienced Error 734 most often, but also error 777, and at least one other that I've forgotten.

Fred, the Cingular tech support, turned this over to his supervisors, and supposedly someone will call me within 24 hours. He was very patient and gracious, and I'm not desperate - I only rarely actually need to use this phone as a modem - but it is not working at this moment. So...

If anyone else has experienced this and can offer help, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

lol you are joking right? have you not read the first post?

Posted by: mgparham

It works!

My posts above show the things I did, and the suggestions of Cingular tech support. While waiting for another tech call, I tried some more...

Usually, I plug in my phone with USB, then click modem link, then the connection on the PC. Today, I turned on modem link, then plugged in the USB wire ... and the computer started searching. It installed a new network connection, and that one works.

Even though I had done all install steps and had the appropriate network connections on my PC, and the network connect connected, logged on and registered, I was always kicked off with the errors previously referred to. This new connection is identical but for the com port it registered.

So, if your connection isn't working, try turning on modem link before connecting via USB.

But maybe everyone else already knew that.

Posted by: Omega2008

Lol well of course you do silly, if you plug the phone up before turning on modem link the phone will establish and activesync connection. In any case glad you figured it out.

I knew it was user error....just knew it...

That's it, you should have a connection that will dial up to Cingular's GPRS network. If you have Edge service in your area you will get Edge speeds.

Thanks for the tip, I've been meaning to setup my 8125 to my laptop, I have the mediamax 200 with Cingular and the unlimited internet, do you know when you connect to your laptop and log on to the internet through the PDA if you use your phone minutes or does it go into your unlimited internet plan, I'm not sure??? Thanks

Posted by: ukiechris

How about a modem activation string? Anybody using that when setting up a connection manually in Windows?

Posted by: KikoKazuma

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","xxx"
AT+CFUN=1;+CGDCONT=1,"IP","xxx"

With these strings, xxx gets replaced with the apn you are using. For example, if you are using the wap apn, then the string you would use would look like:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

or

AT+CFUN=1;+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"

Posted by: ukiechris

I am using only this:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP"

and it works with the blue sim card, on unlocked Nokia 6682 with a windows xp laptop, usb connection

the number I am dialing is *99***#

Posted by: nawaf88

Is cingular able to tell that your tethering using this method if ur using a MediaMax plan or does it just look like i'm using the internet on my phone. Of course I'm not going to be using this as my sole internet access. Just every once in a while where there might not be WIFI or something. Basically maybe twice a month.

Posted by: Omega2008

Yes they are...but they don't care if you do it once in a while. If you do it all the time, expect to be charged for excessive use.

Posted by: Princess Geek

I have a cingular 8125 but it's unlocked and I use it on the Rogers network in Canada. I avoid using gprs and only use internet when it's wifi. Does anyone know if I can do the same? Does it count as voice minutes or data?

Posted by: RonS.

^ ^ An older thread, I know. But I am also interested in this answer. As I understand it, as soon as I connect to the APN, the "meter" starts running, and -- since I have no prepaid data plan -- R-ATT will therefore charge their usual $41 per kb of data flow. Is this right? (except perhaps for the per-kb rate)
Thanks!

As an aside, despite many tries I haven't yet figured out where to enter the GPRS settings for this unit. I've got everything else running okay, but no EDGE 'cuz no GPRS!

Anyone? Anyone at all?
Thanks.
