Anyone know how much the phone costs just to buy the phone? I'm wondering what my cheapest route to unlocked 8700 is, 550 unlocked/shipped on ebay or buy the phone locally and get an unlock code from various places online.

Thanks, J

As a matter of fact, I do. I just bought one tonight at a Cingular store. Retail price, $449. With one year contract, $399. Two year contract, $349.

Why not buy the free phone from amazon, get a 2 year cingular contract, cancel the contract, pay the $150 or $200, walk with the free phone (or even $150 if you don't do the rebate) and unlock it and carry it to tmobile?

You might wanna check the rebate info before you make the plunge, Amazon has already thought of this route and they're not in the business of losing money.

In order for the rebate(s) to work, you need to wait about 6 months before you can even submit the rebate if you still remember to do it that is. and wait 10 to 12 weeks after that, THEN, you will receive the rebates.

If it was that simple, everybody would be signing up and cancel during the 2 week trial period and keep the phone for free.

OK, so you buy the phone at their price for $150, ignore the $150 rebate to make it free, cancel in the 2 weeks and you have a phone for $150 that is being sold on ebay for $550.

Find your cheapest retail price and then pay $45 for an unlock code off Ebay and take to T-Mobile. That's what I did and I figure it saved me >$100 over the ridiculous prices for unlocked devices on Ebay. For the savings I can live with the Cingular branding and firmware.

I just bought mine at Cingular without contract for $450

You can also buy on amazon without a contract.
