Speed dial drop menu covers keypad

Does anyone know how to limit the drop down contacts menu when using speed dial. I have the Alltel version PPC6700 and the speed dial is already installed. When I touch any number on the key pad the contacts menu rolls down and covers the keypad. When driving and operating one handed I can't use my thumb to tap the tiny button to roll the menu back up so I can continue typing in the phone number. I tried everything in the speed dial options menu with no success. I want to use the speed dial feature but the menu issue makes it useless for dialing numbers outside of the contacts list. Anyone got a registry hack to limit the menu drop down?? Thanks
