Could someone, once and for all, post wether unchecking the proxy server allows/disallows the phone from accessing EDGE? Is EDGE that important? If it does do you now access the web at a slower speed?

the proxy and EDGE are two different things. you can use no proxy while using EDGE or you can use the proxy while using EDGE...

Ok, I think I need you to talk down to me. I thought if you uncheck the proxy you lose access to edge. Are they completely independent? I currently have to go into setting>advanced>etc to change media net to my isp in order to use wifi. So is this a waste of time?

If you don't have the proxy on you will still get EDGE speeds, it has nothing to do with it.
The only thing that it would really affect is the ability of accessing the media net website with the http://device.home url.

edge is a hardware, and an edge phone connects via edge whenever it can on a supporting network.
the proxy is software, it tries to speed things up on the phone in terms of internet talk by compression.
i don't understand you question. of course it is not a waste of your time to uncheck the proxy if you need to do so to connect to your wifi network....
