Data plan required for 8125?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: cgruber

I visited my local Cingular store and was thinking about getting the 8125 but the sales guy told me I couldn't get it without purchasing the unlimited web/email plan because it was a pda phone. I REALLY don't want that service and intended to use the phones wifi connection only.

Is this true?

Posted by: kwando

no that is not true. from my understanding if you want the $50 rebate you need to get the unlimited data plan.

Posted by: SuperDodge

He was just saving the phone so that he could get a commission for a data plan when he sold it.

Posted by: cgruber

Well he didn't get a sale because of it. I don't need to always have internet service and an open wifi hotspot is easy to find if I do. I definetly don't want to pay an extra $35-40 for that service.

So this has been asked before and I've seen both answers on the forum. Does the 8125 work with MediaNet? The Cingular sales reps can't seem to agree. One told me absolutely while another said that I must have a data plan. Anyway, if MediaNet unlimited is $20 and the data plan is $40, over the lifetime of a 2-year contract, I figure to save $480 so I don't mind missing the $50 rebate. What's the definitive on this?

Posted by: momathome

I think we have to wait until people get their first bills for the definitive answer. On the Cingular forum, some folks have said that you can use MediaNet with the Cingular 8125, but Cingular will charge per minute for use because it's an Internet connection, not a WAP connection. I'm not sure of the particulars, visit http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board?board.id=cingular for more. I didn't follow the discussion closely because it doesn't affect me.

When I bought the Cingular 8125 I didn't already have MediaNet so I was told I needed a PDA plan. I didn't argue, so I have the $39 plan. Expensive? Yeah, but I canceled my T-Mobile Hotpsot account so it's kinda a wash. I just have to settle for the slower EDGE connection when I'm in Starbucks. :-)

the media unlimited plan will work physically, but the cingular people are going to want to get you on the more expensive pda unlimited plan.

i agree with SuperDodge, the cingular guy didn't want to sell you the phone without the pda package because they get more commission from it.

technically you shouldn't need any data plan to buy the phone.

Posted by: beatniks3

i just read that the cingular reps make double the commission if they sign someone up for the pda connect plan....

do you think that has anything to do with it?

Posted by: Foxbat121

I haven't received my physical bill yet (it's coming). But from the online bill I checked, I didn't get charged any extra for data usage. I signed up for 5mb/mo MEdia Net plan with first month unlimited as promotion. So far, it works out for me. Don' t take that guys word on Cingular forums seriously (he helps out his friend in a Cingular store). But from the other threads posted here in Cingular EMployee forum, you need to keep an eye for your account regularly. Cingular may take the MEdia Net plan out of your account any time without notice and charge you ppu.

Posted by: KikoKazuma

It's been asked/answered a billion times. It will work fine with the media net plan. The phone is pre-configured to use the wap apn anyway. Cingular just WANTS you to use the pda connect plan. So if they happen to find out you're not using it, they can remove media net from your account. That's all.

If you are buying the phone at the no-contract price, a data plan shouldn't be required AT ALL. If you are buying it with a contract, AND you want to get the rebate, then the data plan IS required. If you are buying the phone with a contract BUT you don't care about the rebate, the sales people will still push to get you to subscribe to the data plan. If you want the phone really bad, then sign up with the data plan if they insist, then call CS and have it removed.

It's not as much about the commisson but more about the feature attatchment quota we are required to meet

Posted by: Rock3nrenigade

I wasnt able to purchase it at all without a data plan at my local store, they said they cannot sell it without the data plan. even without a contract.

My bill stayed the same been using the old Medianet plan and have not had any problems...

I'm going to buy it online through my employeer discount anyways. I just think it's a little uncool to straight out lie about it. If anyone cares this was at the Oshkosh, WI Cingular store on Koeller St.

The best advise is listed above....

Any feature you sign-up for with your initial contract can be removed with a simple phone call to 611 as soon as you activate your phone.

I know several people who have done this without any issue....

My local store wouldn't sell me an 8125 without getting the PDA connect plan either. The guy flat out told me that he got a big commission for selling it and that I could remove it as soon as I left.

When I called 611 to have it removed, the rep asked me if I wanted MediaNet instead since it was cheaper ($20 instead of $40) and was still unlimited. I said yes. Now the employees on this forum tell me that I'm gonna get switched over to Pay-Per-Use without my knowledge?

What a company!

I wouldn't worry so much - you were switched on the phone (611) they keep notes/history of these changes so the fact that the CS rep added MediaUnlimited to your plan for a 8125 gives you leverage...as it does me.

Mine is even better...I was ASKING for PDAConnect but the rep told me it was a waste of money and that the MediaNet Unlimited for $20 was exactly the same. I had her make notes on my account that said so!!

Lets see them try taking it away from me now...suckerz.

Of course than can still take it off, you just got a rep who was missing a million screws. That's called a "mistake". If that was an orange customer care rep he/she will hopefully get fired.

We had a really savvy gal on the phone from Cingular tech support that added some color to this discussion. Apparently there is only one port for Web enabled phones… WAP connections. PC Phones have eight ports, hence the DATA plans and ISP or ISPDA connections. The fear factor is the PC phones will overwhelm the WAP service and increase the load for the phone folks till it slows to a crawl. The more expensive DATA plans are Cingular’s attempt at load balancing. Comments?

Partly makes sense except the part about ports - wap.cingular has all ports open that I'm aware of - at least most common ports with the exception of certain VPNs.

If in fact wap.cingular only had 1 port open (T-Mo used to do this) it would make more sense to charge more for isp.cingular since it would be full featured. Reality is though that wap.cingular has all the ports opened otherwise you couldn't check your email, chat or do anything EXCEPT web browsing.

We all know we can....

If they take you off the data plan, I believe legally they have to take off those pay per use charges and then probably make you get on the more expensive plan, it's like a wake up call I guess...

Tha being said, last month my boyfriend was taken off the Media Net Unlimited on his Treo, his bill came out to like $1,000... he called them up, they said they took him off media net unlimited, took off the charges and put him back on Media Net Unlimited.

Agents or COR stores can require you to add a Data Package in order for you to be able to get the rebate price on the phone. If you look at any advertisement poster, (Lets use the NCAA March Madness LG C2000 Poster for an Example)... all the posters under the price say "after $30 mail-in rebate with a new 2 year service agreement. Data package purchase may be required"

So this is basically Cingular's OK to the stores to only honor the price if they get a data package if that particular store wants to, or has very limited stock on the phone.

Posted by: Rock3nrenigade

Even No term they wanted the data plan.. I just walked. I still want the thing though, any ideas how to get around the data plan issue.

Posted by: mobilehavoc

Sign up with the data plan and then call 611 and have them take it off...I think this is the 3rd time I'm posting this...all 3 posts are on the same page too!!

Posted by: Rock3nrenigade

yea but how can you confirm that its actually off?

Posted by: soljin

I added unlimited mediaNet to my old phone right before calling and ordering my 8125. The 8125 showed up and I put my old sim in and was surfing free and clear. It still shows mediaNet on my billing info on the site. I was wondering if you get a faster connection with the unlimited data plan or is it the same thing as unlimited mediaNet? My connection now is hell slow top 10kbps and I want something like 40-50kbps.

Posted by: mobilehavoc

Wirelessly posted (Currently using my: HTC-8100/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320))

Log in to OLAM, go to Features on the left side and you'll see its gone. It'll be updated after you hang up the phone with 611.

I've even logged in while on the call and after they said they made a change to verify it and a few times saw they made an error so they corrected it.

Look its a feature like Blackberry, you can remove it and add it every 5 mins if you want, they don't care although they may think you're odd.

Nope. Has to do with the speed in your area. I am on Edge most of the time so my speeds are usually pretty fast. I'm assuming you're probably on GPRS in your area, is there a G or an E where it shows your internet connection? If you have a G then thats why and a data plan change won't change that.
