Windows XP detection problem with v551 using data cable

Hello everyone,
I know there have probably been very numerous posts with detection issues regarding the detection of the v series phones by Windows XP. The problem I have is a little different the ones I've been reading about. I'll give a brief history of what i've gone through.

I started off without any problems about a year ago when i purchased the data cable and had a CD to go along with it which had the proper USB drivers. I never had any problems with detecting the phone at that point.

Eventually I had to format my harddrive and reinstall Windows XP but this time around I installed a different version of XP than I had previously installed (not sure of the exact version and how to even find that out).

Now that I've had this newer version of XP i've begun having problems with detecting my v551. The weirdest part is the fact that I plug my phone into the USB port, XP makes that sound it normally makes when new hardware is plugged into the USB port, but then immediately after it makes that sound it makes the other sound as if I unplugged the hardware (hope that made sense to you). Despite having made the disconnecting sound, XP still goes along with the installation of the USB drivers which i properly install since I have the right ones and I point Windows to the right files.

So now the phone is plugged, the outer screen on the phone is indicating that it's being charged so it actually is plugged properly, but Windows does not see that it is plugged. I look in "Modems" and see the Motorola Phone there but its as if it's not plugged in. When I unplug the phone and plug it back, or if i turn it off and back on WIN XP does not recognize that new hardware is been plugged in (it doesnt make that sound it normally should like when you plug a digital camera, mp3 player, etc. into the USB port)

Im thinking it's not an issue with the drivers because I know they work since it's worked in the past. Also, there is an initial detection but then never again once i install the drivers. Im thinking maybe it has something to do with this version of XP. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time

Hi,
I have a similar issue with my v551 but MPT(motorola phone tools) 4 asks while installing the driver that my phone should be unlocked (and mine is locked to rogers). I'll get mine unlocked and then will try again.
Don't know if that bit of info of any help but is your phone locked? That might be a problem but with windoze who knows...

best of luck and keep us posted.

Hey torpedo20, thanks for the tip.
My phone is locked in with Fido and always has been so im not sure if unlocking it will change anything. I did have an idea earlier today of using my old laptop and reinstalling the original version of Windows XP that I was using when everything worked fine. Once I get the chance to do so i'll hopefully find out if that ws the problem or not. I'll definately keep you posted on how that goes.

Just tried everything on my laptop with using Windows XP Home and it worked. So i'm guessing the O/S makes a big difference.

Ok,
I did a little of experimenting last night and made it work.
My first attempts were on a Dell laptop running Windows XP Pro w/o any success; then I booted into Windows XP Pro on my pc (normally, I run linux) and it worked.
Now, here is an interesting part - I think I have a good guess why it didn't work on a laptop. As I found out earlier the USB ports on this particular laptop are underpowered (not enough juice) so some peripherals are acting flakey when connected. In my own expreinece, only usb mouse worked reliably, the rest kept losing connection. So me thinks it could be a hardware problem in my case not software.

I'm glad you got it running, too.

Your last message inspired me! I unplugged anything using a USB port on my computer and only plugged in the phone. Finally now it detected it but would disconnect itself every so often. I would unplug and replug it back in to get the connection going again. My guess, the usb ports are either worn out or just don't function properly. Any clue if it's possible to replace them at all? I'd liek to be getting full power from them.
