Wirelessly posted (SGH-ZX10 SHP/VPP/R5 NetFront/3.2 SMM-MMS/1.2.0 profile/MIDP-2.0 configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

Do you just want it to look good or do you want it to be useful

RAZR's are buggy, but awesome when they work. d307's are ugly, and confusing to use.

D307 is very trick. It is a very entertaining form factor IMO.

I owned the D307 for about two weeks. I returned it because of reception and sound quality issue. I didn't just have one either. I have a family plan (5 lines) and all five experienced the same issues. Still, I would never recommend a Moto. I say try a Nokia or SE phone.

I've had a few RAZR's and I fear I cannot go back to them because I am so picky about things like build quality and the occassional buzzing in the earpiece and keypad.

As for the D307... well, I kind of dismissed it the first time I got my hands on one, mostly because I felt the learning curve was a little steep (yes, it is a tad confusing) and I don't believe you can access the web browser in landscape/QWERTY mode.

So last week I finally made a trip to the local Cingular (former Blue) store where I live now (Walnut Creek, CA) for the first time, and they had a D307. I thought I'd play with one again to get reaquainted.

"Aw shoot," I thought. "It's only a dummy phone." The screen looked too good, like a photograph. But then I pressed a few buttons and was astonished to learn that it was a live phone. Yup, the screen on this thing is so vivid, I actually thought it I was looking at a dummy phone!

But after about 30 minutes of fiddling, I remembered why I never bought into the D307. It's a little clumsy to use, and that ingenious pivoting hinge just does not inspire me with long-term durability. Even brand new out of the box the D307's hinge has a bit of play built-in. It's probably by design, I'm sure. And there's a good chance that 100% of the D307's out there are holding up rock-solid.

But for me, no thanks.

I like all these phones coming out with this design - reminds me of mini-laptops. Very cute.

Mine has been solid as a rock and really the learning curve isn't that great at all but I also have the patience to mess around with new gadgets -- it is no Nokia in terms of usability but it does what it is meant to do...provide qwerty access for IM and basic email, SMS --- very well....

If you think that one will fool you, get yourself over to a T-Mobile store and check out the new SDA. It has a QVGA 2.2" screen, clearest I've seen on any mobile device. I don't think you could squeeze more pixels into a 2.2 inch screen.

Yeah... some of these screens nowadays are pretty darn impressive. I remember going from a SE T68i to a Sharp GX20... the difference was like looking at a photograph versus a soggy postage stamp put through the wash a few times, slapped on the hind end of the neighborhood cat and spun around three times.

Anyhow, the D307 screen, along with the B&W outer screen (me like, me like) is almost enough to make me dive back into the clamshell world. Almost...!

Well, to the OP, I guess it really all boils down to what you really want. If texting isn't a big deal to you, you may want to think of something else other than the D307.

But if your tolerance for buzzies and wiggles is pretty good (translation: "If you're not me...") then consider the RAZR, but be prepared for hit-and-miss build quality.

You're correct, and you have no idea how much this annoyed me.

The RAZR is a great phone if you get one that doesn't have any bugs. Samsungs OS is not my cup of tea. Any RAZR you buy now from Cingular should be bug free.

So what can you do with the screen in landscape mode?

You can do only messaging (i.e., text, IM, etc.). I think the phone it poorly designed. Yes, it has a unique hinge and I like the fact that it has a wealth of features and no camera. I find that companies just stick a camera on every phone, whether it is need or not, practical or not. Still, I also have a VZW account and their VX-9800/the "V" is a much better idea. Surely, the "V" doesn’t have the unique hinge, but otherwise, it is a much better phone/device. You can do anything in the landscape mode that you can do in the standard candybar mode. You can even make calls in landscape mode. Perhaps Samsung intended for the D307 to be only a messaging phone and nothing else; whereas, the "V" was designed to be a more multimedia device.

Razr has been the best phone for me. I would suggest it over any other phone any day. I have been using it for more than a year now. It's not just look, it works great as a phone.

You must have gotten a good one then. I am going on number 3. I would recommend a nokia, but I don't know about SE, my experience was terrible with my z500a. Samsung has some nice products, too.

Avironeur,

Does your D307 have any of the bugs listed by this user last November?

I've reported these to Samsung, but I'm not sure if they're going to go anywhere. And with the other design flaws that I'm sure you've all read about, I'm probably going to switch to a different phone before my 30 days are up:

1. Entering an SMS in Landscape mode. If you are entering text and
then select a comma and hit the caps key to type "I", for example, all
of your text disappears from the screen. If you hit the delete
key(back arrow) your text will reappear and if you press cap again it
works properly. I can reproduce this any time.

2. When sending a message, if you close the phone from Landscape mode
before the message is finished sending, the light stays on until you
open the phone again. A battery drain. I can reproduce this any time.

3. When entering a New SMS the default text entry is in all caps. This
is sporatic and have not been able to determine the steps taken to
reproduce every time.

Actually, with the D307 you can also use the Address Book and Calendar in landscape mode. The only things you can't use are Java programs and the wap browser. You can do everything in portrait mode, just can't do those 2 things in landscape mode.

The "V" is just the opposite. You can do everything in landscape mode, but you can't do much at all in "closed" (candybar) mode. You cannot browse the web, use any BREW programs (such as Mobile IM), or watch VCast videos. All you can basically use in closed mode is text messaging, camera, phone calls, and MP3 player. Plus the "V" is huge for a non-smartphone. It's larger than many smartphones.

I was considering the V, but I'm leaning towards purchasing a Nokia 9300i unlocked instead. They are both about the same size (the Nokia is slightly longer, but is thinner). If I am going to get a phone of that size, it might as well have a real operating system, a HTML web browser, VGA-width screen, and Wi-Fi. The only thing it is lacking is a camera.

I still find it to be the better of the two devices. I do wish the "V" was smaller or, at the very least, thinner.

?

There are plenty of handsets with 2.2" QVGAs....

A900 by Samsung, T809 (T-Mobile) by Samsung, those Shap phones, etc.
