I have a Treo 650 on Sprint with a 2g card. My question is can it play movies and if so how do you make that happen?

Posted by: cjmedina

check the faqs. but short answer is you need to type of software, both free. one you need pocket divx encoder to convert the files and 2 you need tcmp player to view them

The Treo 650 plays movies straight out of the box. Just put 'em on your card, select 'em and play 'em.

TCPMP is a great Free player though. <-clicky

I second Chillin. TCPMP is the way to go. You can't beat the price either - free.

Get TCPMP. Yes you don't actually need it to watch movies, but this free application is great and covers most formats. You should also reduce the size of the movie to store more, but as long as you can fit the movie it will play. There are several good apps out there to do this reduce the size though.
The resolution of the treo 650 also makes the movies look extremely good for a handheld.

Is there anyone that can walk me through step by step on how to load a movie onto the treo? I've loaded it but it went onto the real player. I've tried using the quick install and it locks up and wont let me do it. Someone please help

Take SD card out of phone.

Put it in card reader.

Drag and drop the movie file from your PC on to your SD card.

Insert SD card back into Treo.

Launch TCPMP.

Point it to the folder where you put the movie.

Hit play.

Yep...use a card reader. I made a seperate folder on my card called "videos" and put them in there. Drag the movie to the card and reinsert into the treo. Launch TCPMP and just select it. Should work without issues. Make sure you have the correct codec loaded with Tcpmp which should come with it.

Posted by: jwhite313

Well I got the card reader and did all of that and now its telling me that the codec isnt present and I'm using tcpmp and the movie is in wmv. Please advise

I have that same problem. If I am not mistaken, my reading from last night says the WMV codec is only present on the PPC or WM Smartphone devices. Either way, after my reading, wmv files dont play on the Palm OS, and my numerous attempts have failed. I had to convert them to mpg files. If someone knows of a way, or has a wmv codec, please share.

I installed the latest version of TCPMP and it came with a lot of additional codecs. Read the install.html file that unloaded to where ever you put the folder at. Then, click on each of the codecs to install. The file named ffmpeg_plugin will let you see a movie in .wma and .mov formats, as well as mpeg4. Problem is, it will let you see it, but not hear it. No audio.
Anyone have a solution? I'll try a couple of file converters, let you know what happens.

Posted by: jwhite313

Ok I converted my file to a mpeg and I can watch the movie fine, but I get no sound at all please advise?

how do i install TCPMP??? i downloaded that zip file but im lost please help!

Posted by: 860 pimpin

unzip it then go to your palm folder and drag all the tcmp stuff into the send to handheld program. from there it will ask you if you want it installed on the phone or on an sd card if you have one. it should install the next time you hot sync

Posted by: mjs31

Tcpmp install is pretty easy as mentioned. Just unzip and double click the main one and the codecs you want. Then run quick install or sync up.

As for the audio issues...can you play the converted file on your computer with audio?

I try to stand clear of windows movies since TCPMP does not handle them on the palm.

Yeah it plays just fine on my computer

I'm having problems with stuttering during video playback on my Treo 650 - it appears to happen usually during fast moving/very loud scenes. Is it recommended to use PocketDivxEncoder to reduce the size of a movie file that is already in Divx format (~700MB)? Does it help with stuttering I get sometimes?

Along the topic of stuttering video playback, what is the best way to install TCPMP/codecs and the video files? Currently, I have the TCPMP and the codecs in internal memory and the video files on an SD card. Perhaps its the speed of the SD card itself?

If there are any guides to using this program that someone can point me to, that would be great!

Thx.

ive been reading around about putting movies onto the treo and i wanted to know if the only way to get video file onto the treo was move it through to a sd memory card reader or is there a way to skip the card reader and have it directly put it onto my phone?

Posted by: lilchucks

yea you can use the palm desktop software that comes in the tro cd and i think you go to media and click add media or something like that and ill convert it for you also and ill save space

Posted by: dabum

great, it worked thanks. does anyone know exactly how much the file size is reduced when i convert it through the palm desktop program?

Download SUPER (freeware)

- Open SUPER
- Drag and drop WMV video file into SUPER
- Use these settings:
Output Container: avi
Output Video Codec: DivX
Output Audio Codec: mp3
Encoder: ffmpeg
Options: Hi quality
Audio Channels: 1 (saves some space)
Press Encode button
Choose DIVX - All players compatible
- Copy .avi file to your SD card using a media card reader
- Use TCPMP to play (video and sound should play)

Good 2 know...

This is pretty impracticable. I guess I can see if you have a large card (ie: 2 gigs) and compress some episodes of the Sopranos on there.

Since the resolution of the Treo is so low, you're going to want to compress the files to save the space.

Maybe on an airplane you can watch a movie or two but how long does the battery last? However, I don't think it's very practical to watch movies on this device besides for the 'wow' factor.

I have to disagree, I watch movies on my Treo 650 all the time, (I have a slow job ) and at 65MB each they look fine too me. I can play movies for about 3 or 4 hours if I keep off the phone. Go go Futurama!!

I use TCMP and AutoGordianKnot to compress and play.

Cheers
