The press release can be found here on Vodafone's website in English:

http://www.vodafone.jp/english/rele...6/20060315e.pdf

Too bad, it is only W-CDMA. Only for use in Japan. No GSM at all. I love the design of it though.

Posted by: kanon23

DAMN YOU VODAFONE! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!

they know we will be waiting so they just make the best model ever NOT available outside Japan...

Posted by: kanon23

Also...whats with the antenna? It feels like those portable TVs people used to watch horse racing in Hong Kong...

Posted by: mavericke

'Only made available in Japan...' How I wish they say..'Only made available outside Japan.' That would be something different, right?

Posted by: kms-lai

then it, the 904sh, to think about, 905sh is out of the question.

Posted by: Timsta

well.. that unravels some controversy.. why not gsm and wcdma. well.. for hte majority of us.. its the 904.. got no choice.

the 905.. can watch tv. thats cool.. and they copied another samsung design.. wtf is wrong w/ them.

this is the 2nd time.. first was the 904.. now the 905.. i wonder if samsung sold them the shell designs..

or maybe the sharp designers aren't that innovative this year. LG used this design last year as well.. for one of their phones..

what is this.. a revolving door of shell designs.

Posted by: zabieru

it looks good thought. but the fact that it can be used only in japan... damn.. why do they get such good phones.

Posted by: Timsta

its cause.. we aren't sexy enuff. and the fact we don't have the ppl or the network to support such a phone i guess.

we should write to your senate or US congress about this.. this is a matter of national importantance!

hey Tim is Ry still sick? Tried to call him about the charger but no reply...

Posted by: Timsta

oh.. i have no idea.. he kind of disappeared. send me an email with your addy. i'll just mail yours out to you. u need a lcd remote?

Tim

Posted by: kms-lai

well thats one way to stop pll buying the phone from japan, then cancel the contract.

I think the design with the movable screen is normal, since you need to watch DVB or tv in widescreen mode.

Posted by: Timsta

haha.. it stops everyone from buying the phone that isn't from japan lol.

thats not very nice of them.

More info & live pictures here.

Posted by: Blt4424

It's ugly anyway.

Goodbye Sharp.

Posted by: alan2000

THIS IS MY PHONE!!
I mean this is the phone that I was looking forward to!
Grr!
Why CDMA , someone should really invent a CDMA to GSM converter
I bet billion of ppl will buy it!
hahah

Posted by: Evo_jai

sigh, the camara is only 2.02 MP wtf, i was expecting a 5 mp

Posted by: dragon208

sick phone.. too bad only in Japan... arg..

yeah.. i wonder that too.. not really feeling the design.. but i think it looks better than the 904.. lol it's too 'squarish' and the antenna's gotta go...

Posted by: Timsta

antennae is needed for TV tho... no antennae.. no reception

Hahahaha. As soon as I saw this topic, I was scrolling through, waiting to see MODist promote his own site YET AGAIN.

Nice looking phone. Too bad it's W-CDMA and only 2MP camera.

Posted by: bad character

seeing the 904 and the 905's ugliness makes me appreciate my 903 much more. even though the 903 dosen't have tvs and face scanners, its still the best!

Posted by: altNz

I wonder with the possible sale of Vodafone KK to Softbank, that we might begin to see a two tier system of Japan only phones and export phone to Vodafone (I'm assuming Sharp will keep their contract with Vodafone), as it has been stated in news articles that the reason Vodafone KK failed was their lack of focus on the domestic market.

Posted by: BXNYC

Damn. I'm kinda relieved about the 905 being not as great as I hoped. And like everyone else it does make me appreciate my 903 even more. It gives the rest of us a little bit longer to see what else sharp has coming out this year. I mean after the 905 june release there's still 6 more months left in 2006 so let's see what happens. Because of the of 905 being such a disapointment does anyone think that the prices of the unlockable 903s and upcoming 904s are gonna go through the roof?

Posted by: Timsta

well. the 903 from the end of december and january.. seem to have some hope. hehe. we're actually figuring out somethign with them. progress being made.

Posted by: Box215

i agree with BXNYC, im glad its only for japan. I just bought myself a red 903 (red and black...yummy) for $610. Want to get at least 6 months use out of it, lol

Posted by: SpecC

Man I just dont like the new sharps at all now ><" 904 ? 905 ? hahaha I guess I just love the 903 it's like best in design. LOL and I thought the 904 would have 4 mp camera and 905 would have 5 mp but it only has 2.... wonder if the 906 would be drop back down to 1 mp camera ? kakaka jk ~! ^^

Posted by: MODist

906's 1 Mp camera is logical

I dont think the sell point of the 905sh was the camera, it was the DVB and TV function, i agree why reduce the camera to a 2.0 mega pix, when they could of just left the 3.2, It will be if they have a 1 mp when the 906sh comes out

Posted by: BXNYC

Well I hope sharp does something soon by at least october because other companies like LG are stepping it up w/their camera phones. Anyone hear about the KG920 5mp camera phone they're coming out with?

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_kg920-1467.php

Posted by: AL9999

They probably dropped the camera res because of space issues inside. I can imagine a TV tuner that tunes both analog AND digital is going to be quite big, and the 3.2MP/2x optical camera module is big enough as it is, so something had to give.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

i wonder if it can be unlocked... and yes I know there is no GSM, but I live in an area covered by W-CDMA anyway from several providers.... it's so damn hotttttt!!!! i want it badddd!!

Posted by: Box215

the wcdma they use in japan is different than the one you use in the UK, so i wouldnt work anyway

Posted by: Timsta

yah... thats unfortunately the case.

but its a nice phone eh? but... its still copying samsung... bleh.

not the hugest fan of it tho... our only hopes is the 770sh and 550sh

Wha? Since when is Vodafone Japan's W-CDMA different to that used by operators in the UK? The only one that used a different standard was DoCoMo, and they've since updated their network to the shared standard one anyway (although their Japan-only handsets still use the old standard).

If the 905SH refuses to work on overseas networks, it would be because Vodafone Japan would have locked down the phone to connect only to their network and not any other, not because of incompatibility issues.

Posted by: kms-lai

apart from wcdma in the US and the one from DoCoMo, it's the same elsewhere, it depends on the network whether the roaming is locked.

Posted by: Phonicsmonkey

wow i hope the persons hands in those pics is small, otherwise... damn i thought my w900 was a little big...!

Posted by: xinhang

wtf man, so all we got is freaking 904?! omg i was expecting so much more. now every companying is coming up with 3.2megapixel or higher phone. 904 is going to be nothing. cmon! wtf is going on

Posted by: Timsta

haha. your disappointment is what is needed to send into sharp.. file those complaints! let them know your disgruntlement.

but yah.. 904 is a disappointment.. 905 is semi one too if you ask me. or maybe we are just asking too much?

Posted by: mavericke

Has anyone come across mobile phones with more than 3.2MP? I think the only one at the moment is still Sharp 903SH and later SE K800 and also from Nokia. Honestly the 904 is a little bit disappointing but it has a few more features which the 903SH does not...At least it looks slimmer than the 903,right?

Posted by: Timsta

there are plenty that have more than 3.2.. xcute has a 6 megapixel. lg and samsung both have 5 and 7 megapixel camera phones. gigabyte has a 5.1 megapixel camera phone.

Posted by: kms-lai

samsung has a 10mp camera phone.

Posted by: faifai9394

friends I have been saving up for this and all of a sudden they come out something that I don't want........ anyways is there anyway for the verizon people to use the wcdma?? or it must be japan only

Posted by: AL9999

Verizon runs CDMA, not W-CDMA. Completely different standard.

Posted by: faifai9394

yeah but I think they been saying that they will upgrade to the wcdma but I guess that will take them more than 10 years to upgrade.......... now I am kind of shooting for toshiba or something else

Posted by: AL9999

You don't upgrade to W-CDMA from CDMA. Like I said, they're two completely different standards, despite the name sounding similar. If you want to use Sharp or Toshiba phones sold in Japan, you'll need to use them on Cingular or T-Mobile's GSM network. That's the best you can do in the US right now.

Posted by: faifai9394

Hey AL I totally understand what you are talking about, I am also a IT pro and I have read something online saying that they are going to go for wcdma but when I look at the date, it kind of dated back to 2001..... I guess they are still not doing it.
http://news.com.com/2100-1033-268198.html
anyways the toshiba I am going for is for GSM not cdma OK

Posted by: AL9999

Yeah I just read that one. I don't think they're going to go for W-CDMA anymore. They've since upgraded their CDMA network to the latest EV-DO high speed standard, so they would have focused too much attention on their CDMA network to switch over now...

Posted by: faifai9394

yeah I guess, we are just bad luck. Hopefully sharp will do the same design for their next gsm phone like 906 or something

Posted by: oneeleven

So, I guess, even unlocked, working fine in a 3G UTMS area, the TV receiver will be useless outside Japan, which broadcasts NTSC (even different from US NTSC)?

111

Posted by: AL9999

Well I've heard of a V603SH with NTSC-J tuner successfully tuning TV in the US, so there's a chance the 905's one will work fine too.

Posted by: yangj08

That'll still turn heads as a TV... Pity I'm in China, with the PAL broadcasts, But I hope that someone in the US picks up 2100MHz 3G so that phones like these can be used as phones in the US as well as really nice-loooking portable TVs.

Posted by: Timsta

ha ha. i hope so too man.. it'd be nice eh?

Posted by: kaizoku_san

Taken from k-tai impress.

Posted by: AL9999

Can't you direct link their photos? I've always been able to...

Would have saved you the trouble putting them on Imageshack.

Posted by: kms-lai

nice pictures, but I think the phone is too big.

Posted by: Timsta

i really like the teal blue colour with the silver

I could've, but I wasn't sure whether they mind that or not. I decided to go the safe route.

Lets see
3G in Japan is 2100 W-CDMA
3G in Europe is 2100 W-CDMA

So it should work. The 906 should have a 1MP camera to make room for the satellite TV tuner with internal antenne.

too big? check the dimensions and weight compared to your 903sh. Its not bigger or heavier. In fact its sllightly smaller and lighter.

also has Felica for getting on trains, so i dont even have to get my wallet out.

anyway, ive already got my name down at the store for the black one. cant wait!

Posted by: Timsta

kms doesn't have a 903 tho.

Posted by: burton159

either way, its still smaller and lighter than the 903. i think a lot of people have been bagging the 905 because they cant buy it.

anyway, ive decided to wait, because Docomo have just announced the credit card service will begin in April/May. that will be fantastic and is the next big step in phones (no need for a wallet). Im sure Voda/Softbank will follow soon after, so im gonna wait.

Posted by: sharpboy

can someone ppost it cz i cant see it i have to have a pass or something

Posted by: Timsta

but can you imagine.. losing your phone.. having someone hack your phone.. then all your personal info is stolen...identity.. credit.. etc. etc.. that would really blow some god damn monkey balls.

Sorry to disappoint but 2100MHZ is strictly official government use only in the U.S. They'll never sell that spectrum.

Posted by: AL9999

At the moment yes, but they're already moving to get the government services off that band so they can auction it off, along with 1700 MHz and 700 MHz spectrum. Spectrum from all three bands is going to be auctioned off in the second half of the year.

This means the US can look forward to getting regular 3G handsets, as well as using unlocked Sharp ones there too. It also means a lot of 3G handsets sold for use in Japan will have to be approved by the FCC, meaning we get more early glimpses of future handsets too

Posted by: Timsta

the way the government moves.. it'll move slowllllly... my aibo will learn to fly by the time that happens..
