Hope this is okay to post in the car forum :P If you have motorcycle forums that you recommend, I'll take my business elsewhere

If you don't want to read all this blabber, you can skip down to where I start "Anyways, to sum it up..."

I'm looking for a starter bike for myself. I'm leaning towards the Yamaha YZF600R mainly because of its price to feature ratio. I first became interested in bikes when my friend rode up my driveway with his Suzuki GSX-R600. I had in my mind "that is the bike I want..." After reading some reviews on each, it seems both bikes are good starters since they are ~600cc. Anything more would be overkill. I also looked at the Yamaha R6 and the Suzuki SV650.

Another factor that plays into this is my budget. I'm looking to buy a used bike because I probably will lay the sucker down once or twice before I get used to it. I don't want to drop $7,000 on a brand new bike and lay it down 10 minutes after I buy it... I checked out KBB for what I should be paying for any one of these bikes and will base my purchase off that. Also, since its Spring time, I assume prices will be jacked up a little bit, where-in I might wait until Winter to buy.

I will probably keep this starter bike for a while until my riding skills actually develop. I am also planning to take my girlfriend for rides, but I don't want her to feel like she is going to slip off, she's already a scardy cat, don't need to make it worse! :-P

Anyways, to sum it up, I'm looking to buy a starter bike, new or used and within my budget of $6000. I am interested in the Yamaha YZF600R and the Suzuki GSX-R and will probably take my girlfriend for rides at some point.

So if you have any recomendations or pointers or things I should look out for, they would be appreciated.

Stick with a bike with 600cc or less. Also, a bike that has an "R" in the model number is automatically going to sky rocket your insurance premium. This is because it stands for Racing, and insurance companies see that as a much higher risk.I would suggest getting a naked bike, like a suzuki sv650 or sv650s to start out with. also, my first bike was a ducati monster 620, and i picked it up brand new for like 5800USD.

I remember when that 250 ninja screamer was a starter and the 600 was a racer

looked at any dirt/street bikes in the 250/350cc class?

so I take it you want a sport style bike? I didn't notice if you said that? Cuz I prefer the cruiser style.....so I went through a couple of Yamaha Maxim's....like from the 80s, for under a grand each to learn....that way there was NO worries.....650s, but they were kinda heavy and slow, real good for learnin.

but if you lookin for sport bike......neermind cuz Im comin from the other angle!
