8125 EDGE/GRPS Butt slow!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have had my 8125 since monday and I have been slugging through the net on GPRS. When I first got the phone I wanted to use the wifi so I disabled the proxy. I had been using the GPRS connection at cripling speeds like 3-5 kbps. I put the proxy or wireless.cingular.com back in to try and get more speed but no luck still super slow. Am I doing something totally wrong? Or is this "high speed EDGE" data. Ohh I have the unlimited media net plan. Is there a post that already covers this?

I get 300kbps with the proxy enabled and 150kpbs without it.

how do you enable the proxy?

you can also speed up GRPS and Wifi with the new Rom update from Imate

Wow where are you guys at and your getting those speeds? Are you using the default GRPS/Medianet connections? Have you guys updated your rom?

It there a utility out there that can show me what connection speeds I am achieving with my 8125?

It has the little E icon some I'm assuming it's EDGE I'm in Washington DC. Anyone having slow connections in this area?

I get about 50 (without proxy) to 100 kbps (with proxy) in DC area.

I'm in SC using the stock Cingular ROM. I am on Edge and you can enable/disable the proxy using the stock connection settings.

Do you have any numbers to back this up?

Nope....but it was sooooo slow when i first used it and when i did the rom update as did most people on this forum...it was such a noticeable difference i don't think you'd care for the numbers if you saw it for yourself

Yeah I know it's easy to turn your proxy on and off. I've made a connection for wifi and a connection for GPRS so I can switch without retyping wireless.cingular.com over and over.

So the rom update speeds up your GPRS connection? That seems kind of odd. I knew you got a general performance boost but I didn't know it effected your connection speeds.

If it's true I might seriously consider upgrading. What are the downsides of upgrading besides voiding your warrenty (woopty freaking do)?

I'm really just trying to stream mp3s from my home computer, so I neeb about 30 kbps of solid bandwidth. But I don't even get close to that. I can get it to play about 2 seconds pause for 4 then play 2, so I'm assuming my peak speed is around 15-20 kbps which is just a joke.

Is there a good place to test my connection speed? All the speed tests I've found require flash 8?

Where in the DC area I'm in Silver Spring and I work in NW Arlington and I've never gotten speeds even close to either of those. Did you upgrade your rom?

ive gotten 200+ in downtown ATL, but it was a one file speed test, im sure latency would be more noticable with real web browsing

I found a good test text.dslreports.com but it gives a result in KiloBits. We have all been talking about Kilobytes right? On this site my max speed with proxy was 50 kBITS which is roughly 6.5 kbps which is a freaking joke. I switched over to wifi and got 980 kBITS which is roughly 112 kbps. I mean my speeds are pathetic there has to be something wrong here.

So, basically you got the wrong idea, kbps is kilobits. KBPS is kilo bytes. We're all talking about kilobits here. The maximum speed EDGE will ever give you is around 150 to 200 kbps. You will need 3G connection like Version's EVDO to reach 300 to 500 kbps.
