March Madness is free on the web!

haha not really- If you read the Ts and Cs you are not allowed to use the laptop card for video streaming. Gotta love it

Posted by: BellaDea

why would they care what you use your unlimited laptop plan for? hmmm....

If I am paying $60 per month for unlimited internet, It better mean that I can be Pumping in gigabytes and gigabytes of data each and every day. Video included.

Oh I didn't say it wasn't possible, but if you look at the conditions of the card you are not supposed to use it on their network for streaming video (among other things). Here is the exact info from the Cingula webpage.

" Data Service sessions may only be conducted for the following purposes: (i) Internet browsing; (ii) e-mail; and (iii) corporate intranet access (including access to corporate e-mail, customer relationship management, sales force automation, and field service automation applications). The Services cannot be used with server devices or host computer applications. Prohibited uses include, but are not limited to, streaming video/audio, telemetry applications, automated data feeds, continuous jpeg file transfers, Web camera posts or broadcasts, other machine-to-machine applications, and voice over IP."

Verizon is the same way to (I know b/c that's who I use) I haven't heard of anyone actually enforcing those policies but they are there.

I think it sucks personally. I am paying 79.99 a month for my data on Verizon (b/c I refuse to switch from a GSM carrier and Verizon has much better hi-speed in Orange County, Ca) and I ignore the Ts and Cs and do all that stuff anyways. Its just one of those things that you hope they don't start enforcing all of a sudden (like they have been doing recently with the PDA data plan audit and the 50% roaming cancellations)

what they say and what you do are different things in reality

Exactly. Im just worried that they will start enforcing it like they have with all their other obscure policies.

Posted by: Freakshow105

well i will tell you it has been a great demo for customers with the 3g card

If they are charging broadband prices, they better expect that you are going to be using it to do broadband things. I sure wouldn't feel like spending $60/month just to surf and e-mail.

In my store they want us to only sell the $80 (reg price).

Question is what is the speed your looking at average and advertised being Upstream and Downstream? I know its not garanteed but still what is advertised and then actual?

This sentence alone means that it is a violation of the T&C to even use the data service at all.

Actually, I think they mean that the wireless card should not be inserted into a server, just a client.

While folks here might not like it, what they basically are saying is use this card for email and business applications where the card is in the client. Don't use it for goofing off like downloading music and streaming video.

That makes sense. Although who would run a server from a high-latency, low-bandwidth connection that may not be reliable like a wired one?
That wording in the T&C is deceiving. They should clarify that the Data Service should not be used to provide services using server devices or host computer applications.

Again as i asked previously what about Speed they Advertise? And what is Average?

Upstream and Downstream? What is the speeds?

Have you consulted this thread yet?

The wording in the T&Cs is bad. It should have several more sentences, in order to make it clearer.

One thing people could run on there would be filesharing. That would be a "server", and one that doesn't require too much dependability but eats bandwidth.

Another thing people could do is set up security or other systems which serve up photos or environmental data for remote monitoring of home, office, cabin etc.

It's hard to define server to the layman easily, but a good Cingular firewall could easily block most attempts to set up such a server.

FYI--the discounted $59.99/month plan is "supposed" to be offered ONLY if the customer has a voice plan of $39.99 or greater on the same account. Otherwise, if it is a stand-alone data package, it is $79.99/month (for the unlimited package).

And really, how can Cingular enforce those T's & C's? Like they know you are viewing streaming video instead of reading e-mail...sheesh.

Posted by: marks47

Yeah, the T&C makes it a little hard to read, but from an ISP background, it looks to me like they're trying to prevent video streaming from your laptop to elsewhere. It's sandwiched in between a bunch of other outgoing-bandwidth intensive stuff.
