Wreckless Driving or Skill

I had to different opinions on my driving recently...!!!

"Left Lane Bandits" sets me off or sometimes I just drive "Hard" because of what I drive.

wtf?

driving hard requires no skill. driving what u drive "hard" doesnt mean your a good driver either.

Skill doesn't involve anything in a straight line at all unless you have to shift, or make sure you don't red light on the tree (drag strip).

Skill is when you know the boundaries of your car well enough to safely move between things, knowing exactly how much your car can handle in the curves without sliding out or loss of control, synchronizing with other cars, and not doing any of this on a public road.

If you can keep a car pitched out around a rotary and hold it for a couple revolutions than thats skill.(on dry pavement) I tried it with my friends and only one of my friends could do it.

but see thats knowing your car, thats not necessarily a good driver...a good driver can anticipate, quick reactions, etc....its too much to debate....my way of thinking for everyday drivers, your a bad driver if you ever had a moving vehicle accident, got pulled over for speeding, or are routinely late to be somewhere....if your good, no tickets, no accidents, and you always arrive early :-D

Difference between skill and sense... I have enough skill to outrun the cops locally. I have enough sense not to.

And somebody can be a great driver in one condition and a piss poor one in another. If you're talking about strict commuter travel, then you have to judge lane maintenence, speed maintenence (sorry, computers can keep their sodding feet off my pedals), sense of direction, knowledge of terrain, and ability to predict traffic. If you're talking about aggressive driving in traffic, you need fast reactions, ability to throw the car to 110% comfortably, and properly predict what traffic will do before they know it and make your move accordingly.

And then there's fun driving. Being able to know the most effecient line, and braking points is key. Most people wouldn't know the proper line through a gentle sweeper, let alone how to take and trailbrake an off-camber decreasing radius bend.

the ability to guess is not skill

You can be both reckless and skillful, but even if you are skillful that does not merit an excuse for recklessness. You can be the most talented race car driver but if you are doing anything that requires "skill" on the street then you are most likely reckless. A fine example:
http://www.rte.ie/sport/2005/1121/fisichellag.html

The only thing I would consider skill on the street is to avoid an accident with quick reaction and steady control. Jumping through traffic and hoping no one does anything irregular is not skill... It is moronic

More directed to the original post regarding "left lane bandits", the "Fastest you ever drove" thread is a thriving source of reckless driving that requires hardly any or in most cases no skill at all.

Do you have skill? Are you pretty good at driving fast through canyons and highway onramps? Is this skill? Hardly... I don't want to sound like an elitist jerk but one really can't understand how to thoroughly control their car unless they have driven it an environment where they can completely spin-out, plow and make mistakes that you can't do on public roads. (Not directed towards anyone specific)

Did I say guess? Drive for a living, and you'll start to notice patterns in traffic. Body language of drivers getting ready to pass or getting ready to use the next off-ramp.

I find this true even without having to drive for a living, but you really only need this if you think someone isn't paying attention and possibly cause an accident. If you are trying to read peoples driving behaviors and hoping they do what they usually do is still kind of like guessing. Trying to get through traffic as fast as possible and relying deeply on your instincts isn't always safe, people do unusual things sometimes.
