External Display on E815

My E815 does not show missed call or voicemail alerts. I never know if I have a missed call unless I open my phone. Kind of defeats the purpose of an external screen...anyone know how to fix this?

You're probably hitting the side buttons before you get a chance to see it..

No thats not it. I've heard of people having problems with this before, but I can't seem to find a solution by searching.
