What does everyone think about Lexus?

Ok, so my car just got wrecked and I'm looking at getting a lexus rx300 about 2000 or 2001. Does anyone else on here have one and what do you think. I haven't seen too many in my area, so i'll have to go a few hours away to get one.

Thanks!!

Oh, I'm also looking at this over a Jeep GrandCheroke limited. I'm banking on the lexus being more reliable, but if anyone can show me different that would be great.

Posted by: ice512

imo you cant even compare the two...if you're lookin for pure comfort and luxury, Lexus leaves the Cheroke in the dust. Theres no doubt about that. You're lookin at two total grade of cars here. Cheroke is comparable to Highlander or the Pilot. Jeep doesnt even have a competitor that is comparable with the Lexus grade of car.

Besides, i dont know if Jeep has improved their cars. But one my of friends used to have a 2002. It was all beauty in the beginnin...after around 2 years, the engine runs noisier than my Corolla. It was like sittin in a pure truck.

However, Jeep Cheroke DOES have a better off-raod capability.

Well, that's kinda what i was thinking. The jeep is nice, it just seemed a little cheap. I think i'm gonna go with the lexus since i spend a lot of time in my car and i want something of quality. I did also look at the honda too, but the leather seemed really hard.Either way though, they are both a big step up from my corolla le.

Oh, and in my opinion off road is a joke. The closest i would come to off road is an unpaved road.

Posted by: paul34

^^ in that case go for the lexus, since what you are looking for is comfort and quality.

Posted by: mplswaltar

Lexus is the best cars in the word IMO. Ill take an IS350 over a porsche anyday. Get a lexus.

Posted by: ggskateboards

Lexus, they are the best quality car ever made, and I'm a Ford/domestic person.

My mother has an SC430, and it's the best engineered car i've ever driven

For off road, land rover. SUV, I would take the pilot.

Lexus is nice, but I won't buy it myself. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

That's just me!

Ok, thanks. I really like the lexus, i would love an IS, but I really need a larger vehicle. I can't wait untill I get my insurance check so I can by it!!

i was in the same boat as you. one of my cars ended up being totalled after an accident this past week. i did research on several cars based on a budget. i looked at the '06 Accord Sedan (Hybrid & regular versions), '07 Camry (Hybrid & regular versions), '06 Mazda6, and a '06 Lexus IS350.
primarily, i wanted the Lexus IS350 even though i knew it would be a bit out of my budget. i was willing to get the basic one, sacrificing extras, just so i could have a Lexus.
well, i ended up with a '06 Avalon Touring. i have no regrets in getting this car. it has impressed me with its quality all around. the inside is very comfy and spacious. with the added JBL Synthesis stereo system, it brings me back to my young days of bumping.
anyhoot, there's so much to say about this car, but i think you should consider it. from the info you've given, it seems like you just want a roomy sedan that has a luxury touch. unless you want the Lexus badge really badly. but seriously, this car gives you the bang for your buck and then some.

Posted by: IsLand_BoY

^ I'm with you. The new Avalons are simply awesome. There's tons of power hiding in what appears to be an unassuming sedan. It handles very well and it looks classy. It's a bit too big for my tastes though, so I prefer my Camry. Nonetheless, it's fun to hop in it [my friend's g-ma has one, so I drive it a few times a month] and know you can smoke all the riced out Civics and Integras who THINK their cars are fast

This is so...... wrong.

the Lexus leaves a similar priced Grand Cherokee "in the dust"? no way. You can load a Grand Cherokee up with all the comfort options similar to the RX. What options did your friend's Grand Cherokee have?

The 2000 RX300 isn't great....at all. Actually the RX is the one that's comparable to the Highlander or the Pilot. if you consider the overall value, the Grand Cherokee is in the class of the GX470....

bottom line, it's (RX300) a glorified soccer mom's car.

Posted by: mblphnlvr

Actually, if you look at the features on a Grand Cherokee LIMITED vs the RX300, they are very comparable (the Jeep even had a handfull more), the Jeep is the similar size, and it's ride is similar.

The GX470 is a large suv where the other two are midsize.

The bottom line is that the lexus does come with the name, but it's also more reliable and a little more suited for daily driving.

I do like the new avalon, but it is out of my price range. Also, I really need the cargo space of an suv because I am always piling up boxes in the back and in a sedan, there's just no room. (Also everyone here drives monster trucks and I don't really want to get run over again)

You just can't compare a Grand Cherokee with a RX300. The RX300 is in the class with the Pilot and the Highlander as "sudo-SUVs". The Grand Cherokee is THE SUV. You seem to have a mentality that as long as cars are the same size, they are in the same class. but nooooooooooooo.

- The Grand Cherokee FAR EXCEED the RX300 in off-road performance (duh)
- You can EASILY find many GC's loaded with the same comfort features like the ones found on the RX300.
- In SUV terms, the GC is in the class with the Land Cruiser (GX).

To say that the "Lexus (RX300) leaves the GC in the dust" is exaggeration beyond infinity. To imply that the GC is a grade below the RX300 is just stupid.. To say "(the) Cherokee is comparable to Highlander or the Pilot" is plain idiotic.

More reliable, probably, but I don't read much about jeeps having reliability problems neither. More suited to daily driving, well, there are thousands of cars that are more suited to daily driving.

Well the space in the RX and the Grand Cherokee is about the same. I think you might find the bigger door on the RX more convenient, thou

Word. The RX300 is a bytch car, no offense. The Grand Cherokee has more of a masculine look. I dont even know if you are a male or a female, but Im assuming you are a male. By the way, consider that you are getting a 5 or 6 year old Lexus with mileage(im assuming), so the reliability isn't really gonna be much better.

This won't be an issue for me. Also, all the cars I have been looking at have been around the same age and miles, so that's also not a factor.

I'm pretty sure that i'm getting the lexus.

Thanks

are you planning to get a used RX?..cuz if you arent getting a used one..you should wait until the 2007 RX350 comes out..NOT A TYPO..itz RX350..
itz HP jumpz from a mere 230 to 270 or somewhere there..as well..it'll get some mid-life refreshing..also i think it gets a 6-sp auto too!

but avalon is still good..after all..the two uses the same 3.5L engine..so does the 2007 Camry V6 and 2007 ES350..
avalon still have the quality..bang-for-the-buck..after all..toyota n lexus are the same..

Ok, my opinion's going to seem skewed and biased, but...

The Grand Cherokee around here is known as the car that mom and dad give to their 16 year old daughters. Men don't drive em. And for those that don't have 16 year old daughters yet, mom's driving it.

Reliability out of the bag is bad on the Jeeps. New car reliability on the Grand Cherokee is worse than a 5 year old RX (per Consumer Reports/JD Power). They're always in the shop for things. AC/heating, electrical things (gauges, readouts, lights), heated seats are terrible when they actually work, leather is cheap... you'll notice stretch marks and tears pretty quickly... cooling system troubles, transmissions, brakes are terrible... to name the most frequent ones I've seen/heard of.

RX300's will keep you going for a long time, even past the warranty period. I've had 3 in the family before (99, 02, 04) and the only major problems we had were in the 99 we had some issues with chrome flaking off the wheels, but they weren't Lexus wheels, and in the 04 my sister broke the catch on the glove box, so when opened, everything would spill out ( ), and the transmission would be hesitant to upshift at lighter acceleration, but they've been recalled and reflashed to fix that problem. No problems with the 02. They aren't perfect, but they're far more reliable than Jeeps are. Additionally, I don't know if you're looking at V6 or V8, but the RX will get better fuel economy in those years vs. the Jeep, even on the V6.

I dont understand lexus. Most lexus look like plain cars. They look no better than toyotas to me.

Posted by: Skylinepilot

If you can afford the maintenance then Lexus would be my vote. One of my bosses has a Lexus (older one and not an rx300 ) and the other a Grand Cherokee and I found the Lexus to be a bit more comfortable. If you'd rather be seen driving a lexus then get it.

Oh and my boss with the GC actually just traded it in for a Ford truck btw.

Yes, this is what I have been thinking this is why I have decided to go with the Lexus.

Also, a 2007 is out of my budget and i'm sticking to my budget to keep away from financing. If I had the cash to drop on a new RX, I would get a used BMW (new cars aren't worth the price in my opinion.)

Posted by: TheRupp

Try to find one that's Certified. You'll get 100,000 miles of warranty on the whole car. I bought my 2001 ES300 certified and still have 40,000 miles of warranty left on it, although I've only used it once so far since I got the car

Performance: GC
Handling: GC
Fuel econ: RX
Maintainence: RX
Comfort: RX
Look: RX
Features: RX
Services:RX
Durable: RX
Resell value: RX

GC is the one of the best performance in its class...its a monster SUV that basically can handld on-off road, but fuel consumption is pain in the axx...it consumers much faster than both of my X5 4.4i and ML320. it even outrun both of my car for 0-100km/h. (my ML is sh*t in speeding.) RX330 is known for fuel econ in its class. it runs 20% more mileage than my ML320 with bigger engine (3.3 vs. 3.2). To maintain a GC is also a problem. My frd's GC goes to the shop every 4 to 7 months for problems like the transmittion box, power windows failure, AC failure, enginee noise, etc...sure the car is built to be tough, the framework and the suspension outclass the RX...but other parts are all falling apart. My 02' ML320 goes to the shop every 15000km...the 03' X5 goes every 8000km...my gf's 05' RX goes every 6000km...but only for normal check up. no major problems. Lexus and Benz are known for luxuary and comfort. By comparing the comfortablility, the RX even outclass the ML with all the luxuary features. adjustable suspension makes the car suitable for any situtation. you can't even feel the bump when you drive of it. and My ML and X5 are very jumpy due to the hard adjusted suspension. engine noise is another factor RX outperform all the SUV because Lexus is well known in the world for eliminating noise inside the car. All my Mercedes and BMW (C280, SLK320, ML320, 325i, Z3, X5, 525i and 545i) are so loud compare to my and my gf's Lexus (GS430 and RX330). GC is just out of the list of comfortability due to its hard core design. Personally I like Euro cars due to its supreme handling. You can feel the road's condition from the wheel, the gas padel and the break. the car reacts according your action instantly. None of the Jap and American cars can do the same like the Euro cars. However, RX has done a pretty good job in its break. Its respond time is getting close to the my X5. However, the wheel and accerlecation are still too soft. you can feel the car is still acc even u are off the gas padel. Its lack of sensative like other Jap cars. It will be more relaxing by driving a RX. On the other hand, GC also have soft wheel and gas. but at least you can feel the accerlecation once you press the gas padel. and you can sense the acc and de-acc when u are on and off the gas. the break is well construct, you can feel the car's response once you step onto the break. in handling, GC is better than the RX.

so its your call whether you want a GC or RX. If you want performance and have plenty of money for fuel and service, go for GC. If for daily normal driving (not aggressive) with minium maintiance cost. go for RX.

not too sure about the value of the GC, but for RX its quite affordable.
2005 RX330,
$66000 CDN for the premium edition (no e-shift, no adjustable suspension)
$64000 CDN for sports edition (5-speed e-shift, adjustable suspension)
$60000 CDN for plain edition
$9000 premium package comes with navagation system, reverse camera, laser guided curise control, 18" aluminum wheel (17" is standard for both premium and sports, 16" for plain)

the 00/01 RX300s have the 1mz-fe engine. it's a great engine which provides ample power and smooth acceleration. Furthermore, it's a pretty reliable engine. however, be on the look out for "smudge" on the engine when you check them out. the 1mz-fe engines have been known to have some smudge on them - from people not caring for their engines by neglecting oil changes at the proper mileages.

Other than that, the RX300 is a very refined machine.
