I want to buy a system either in Best Buy, Circuit City or 6th ave. Anybody here tell me if ya ever bought a system in these stores??

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7130e/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/126 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3)

The info given was too limited. What kind of system are you looking to get? Deck only? AMP? Speakers? Any specific brand name? Model?

How much are you looking to spend?

around 200-300..I need amps and subs

You gotta spend more money on that or your just going to get junk. Maybe you can get a good amp for that or maybe two decent subs. Get some Alpine type R or even type S stuff. Spend some money and you'll be happy. Forget Worst Buy and circuit ******. Go to somebody local that has a good reputation. They usually actually know what they are doing.

I'm afraid I have to agree. With JD, gotta drop the cash if you want something that won't disappoint you.

More than 300??? HOw much does a good one cost???

Posted by: Jeenyus

Depends on your definition of good. It's really easy to put 30,000 into a system, but most will not want to do that. For an average amp/sub combo, I'd say the average person spends about $800. That being with box and amp wiring kit also.

i've bought a head deck (CD) from both Best Buy and Circuit City before. my experience with both were good. the installation times were decent, although Best Buy were faster. both of my decks still work well.

Posted by: dynamo768

damm 30,000?? lol

dual 10'' bandpass box = 80-120 for a decent box
two 10'' decent subs... = 100-150 a piece.
amp = 150+
wires and cables = 60+

that's do-able.

i spent 1200 for a system with a deck for my mustang, been too lazy to put it in the truck though

I spent about $2800 for head unit, 2 subs, 2 amps, 4 regular speaker, custom box and install....

go local if you are getting amps, subs, box....

Best buy et al can do the head unit no prob, but Im leary of their extended system installs.......

do you already have an aftermarket head unit? If you have factory, getting amp and subs on that is more involved......you really need an upgraded head

Posted by: Jeenyus

Voodoo is right, headunit is key. After that, buy what you need, don't pay the extra 100 or so for intall. Ask for directions on here (i'm more than happy to direct you) on how to install your equipment properly.

^^Im with him...I did 2 of em on my own with NO auto/stereo/wiring experience...they came out nice.....it's only an afternoon and your good. These places really bite ya for install fees!

Posted by: the_rus

sorry to 'hijack' the thread but.......
why do you need a new headunit? (I have a stock that came with my '00 Grand Am)
I'm also looking into purchasing a soundsystem.

Posted by: Jeenyus

An aftermarket head unit gives you FAR more control over your sound. You will have a hard time tuning your stereo to it's full potential with a stock unit. Also, an aftermarket head unit will connect to amps a lot easier, and most of the time cleaner than a stock.

i did a ghetto install in my daily bucket for about $100 because the stock speakers had no bass/blew.

my setup:
-Pioneer DEH-3700MP, DIN kit, Wiring Harness - $70
-Lightning Audio Bolt 150.2 off ebay - $20
-2 free MA Audio 8inch subs and box - Free
-Amp wiring kit - $10

never installed a thing in my car by myself, took about 20min to install the deck, and about 4ish hours to install the amp since i couldnt find a hole in the firewall for the power...ended up taking the wheel well wall off where there a hole in the firewall was. i'm satisfied with my very cheap "system" since i got more bass than i need now

you should get my Elemental Designs 1200 RMS amp HERE
its brand new and doing me now good.

go to Speaker City, tell em Frank the Tank sent you...that gets you the huge discount, he knows the the owner, vaughnifer, plus free install if you own a red dragon.

So what head unit would anyone recommend?

Posted by: digital1986

cant go wrong with alpine, sony is horrible, and I have had two panasonic HU and they broke within a year, dont go with them.

Posted by: Jeenyus

Eclipse is probably your best choice, Alpine following very close. Pioneer is pretty cost effective, but their reliability has been declining in the last few years.

Posted by: JDScott302

Pioneer, Alpine, or Eclipse are probably all a good bet. I personally think the alpine is by far the best bang for the buck. The Eclipse is awesome but they are pretty expensive.

Here a good system,
Alpine head - 200
one alpine type r slotted in box - 250
alpine 600 watt mono amp - 300

750 bucks plus install

That WILL POUND, i am in the audio industry and can tell you that will pound. I have had Type r's in a sealed box, and they are tight as can be and will pound. I put systems together all the time. I would also get a two or four channel amp to amplify some door speakers eventually. That system will last forever too.
