Your problem is your process. Your .dat files are not getting update correctly. The proper procedure is:
Using the Filesystem tab in Bitpim....
1) Go to /brew/16452/lk/mr
2) Right click and hit "Add files" and find your rintones.
3) After you are finished adding all your ringtones, go to /dload
4) Delete /dload/my_ringtone.dat and /dload/my_ringtonesize.dat
5) Reboot your phone

Your ringtones should now be available and your phone should not crash

NOTE: You only have 2MB worth of tones to play with doing it this way. For that reason, it is better to trim your mp3's to approximately 30-45 seconds since this is all that will play before VM picks up. This should cut down the size of the mp3 allowing for more tones to be crammed into that 2MB space.

I am assuming you have V4 of the software so you still have the option to add ringtones to your mini-SD card (assuming you have one) in order to go past the 2MB limit. There are plenty of "how to's" floating around here to walk you through that if you choose to go that route instead.

Hope this helps.

Please provide the follow information:
1) What software version is your phone currently running?
2) Please list exact steps you are using to get ringtones on your phone.

Once I have this information, I will be in a better position to help you.

Interesting....this process should work with v6 with one exception....with V6 it is not necessary to delete the two .dat files in the /dload folder.

After adding ringtones to /brew/16452/lk/mr, all you need to do is reboot. With V6/V7 those two .dat files will automatically be deleted and rebuilt upon reboot.

Try this and let me know.

I haven't tried this process yet. I was adding the ringtones on the ringtone tab of bitpim. So I don't have to delete the 2 .dat files? I'll try this when I have my nephews phone.

So i guess you have to delete those files every time you ad ringtones?

That is correct.

When the phone reboots (assuming you have V1 on your 9800), it will do the following:
1) Check for the presence of the .dat files
2) If found, do nothing
3) If not found, go through /brew/16452/lk/mr and add the contents in that directory to the my_ringtone.dat file (and add the size to my_ringtonesize.dat).

Deleting the .dat files and rebooting is just the easiest way to make sure your new files get added to the .dat file.

NOTE: with V2 the process is different. The phone won't bother doing steps 1 or 2....it will jump to 3 which is why the whole ringtone on card thing doesn't work......... a modified my_ringtone.dat file will be overwritten upon reboot no matter what, and since the ringers are on the card and not in /brew/16452/lk/mr, they aren't re-added to the list.

Hope this helps.

I have the LX8100 v07 software. I've gotten MP3 ringtones to work fine following the instructions above. Somewhere on this board I have also found a way to store mp3s on a MiniSD card, and hex edit the ringtones.dat to make them work...the only problem is anytime I turn off my phone it rewrites the .dat file and only shows ringtones in the "/brew/16452/lk/mr".

So I assume there is no way to set it so the file never gets overwritten, or so that it looks for ringtones in the miniSD when you reboot? It would be great to be able to just put the files on the disk and not have to hex edit and leave your phone always on...

This is the notorious problem people with V7 complain about (exact reason for this is in my previous post). I have heard rumors that the newest version of Bitpim has some workaround for this but I don't they are true.....I think people are getting confused with the fact bitpim now includes the ability to automatically generate a modified ringtone.dat file and add it to the phone instead of having to manually edit it yourself.

To my knowledge, a workaround has not yet been discovered. Although people have claimed that they have been able to surpass the 3MB limit of the /brew/16452/lk/mr directory (although I'm sure it is compensating by using mem allocated for mf or mp)..............Nothing with the card though. Sorry.

I believe that the workaround you are talking about is this:

http://64.38.9.50/~chrziz/lgvx9800/...ut=mp3_ringtone

And it works without having to hex edit the .dat, but again, when you reboot your phone the file gets overwritten.
