anyone know anything about radar/laser detectors?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hi all, anyone know anything about these devices??

i have one of those Cobra radar/laser detectors...and it has saved me from several big speeding tickets..

my questions... there are a series of letters on the front part of the device...made up of several letters.. X Ko V Kv and so on....what do these symbols mean???

sometimes im on the highway speeding along...then the thing starts beeping and there isn't a cop in sight... im like "what is it detecting?"...

The letters are different bands of radar. The bands are different depending on what kind of equipment they are using. Generally their regular radar is either K or Ka band and this is where radar detectors work best. Cops will occasionally use the laser when parked along a road and he has his gun out. Radar detectors won't do anything for laser, it's too fast.

How much did it cost this radar device??

I spent about $80 USD for mine at bestbuy. There are better ones out there like the Escort or the Valentine One but my cobra does the job.

mine doesnt work, got pulled over doing 110 with it

Does it work in Canada ? If so i'd definitely like to invest in one

I personally don't know much about laser/radar detectors, but a question similar to this popped up on one of my MB boards and someone hunted down this amazing thread on a Mustang board.

http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=476591

It's literally a discussion of the different and evolving tips/technologies for laser/radar detectors between a Police Officer specializing in that field, and a member of our military equally specialized in the same area.

I'm telling you guys, mine's only beeped maybe 4 times in its' whole life, and there was no cop anywhere (I slowed down and started looking around)

NOTHING

I have a Valentine one and it can beat up your decector

here's the summary:

You can spend as much $$ as you want on a "radar detector," but once an officer points a laser gun at your speeding vehicle, you're screwed, no matter what.

False sense of security, IMO. I just use my eyes and follow the law whenever possible. Seems to work for me

The symbols are, X, K, Ka & L. The first three letters represent the frequencies of Radar being used, the L is for Laser. The most common Radar frequency being used in the USA is K-band, the oldest and least used is X-band, the newest and becoming more widely used is Ka-band. There are many things besides Police Radar that can set off a Radar Detector. Almost all Detectors have a Geiger circuit that increases the rate of warning as you get closer to the signal. Pay attention to how the Detector reacts to the signal, real Police Radar warnings will get markedly stronger as you get closer. If you get hit by Laser you will probably get a very urgent warning and it will be too late to slow down anyway, there is little or no advanced warning with Laser.

-yup if you get hit by laser it's more of a ticket detector.....lol

-radar detectors are illegal in ontario right? Don't use one in Ontario...the fuzz do have radar detector detectors...

-they also have been known to set up radar detector stings...works like this. The cop sits up on an overpass, waits till you go under. Then hits you with radar/laser aimed at the back of your car. If you hit your brakes when you get clocked he sees the brake lights, you get a ticket for speeding and detector

-lots of things set off radar detectors..one being automatic doors at grocery stores.

Check out http://www.radardetector.net/ I would recommend stuff from Valentine One, Escort, or Beltronics. They've got some really good radar/laser detectors out at the moment. If your looking for a radar detector for canada look at the Beltronics STI. Its a bit pricey but theres no radar detector detector that can detect it.
I currently own a V1 its pretty much the best out there. The arrows own!

exactly + 1 !!!!!!!!!

Radar detectors are useless, the best weapon is not speeding or be a very good observer.

the latter will not save u. laser and radar can ping u from quite long distances.

I use V1 and it saved me many times in my trip to Naperville, IL from here. One thing I noticed every now and then a luxury cars like Lexus, MB, or Caddy come by, the with their laser, rader cruise control on, the thing would go off, too. I like the V1 because it tells me where to look.

Useless???? Have you used a radar detector before?? I haven't been stopped for speeding since i've had my valentine one. It always there to alert me even on laser!!

Posted by: pcmike29

the BEST radar detector i have ever used is the bel pro rx65. in my mind it is more effective than the valentine 1, less expensive, and is also software upgradable. i took the advice from radar roy and never looked at my speedometer again!! they are around 250 from ebay brand new, definitely look into that model!!

Haha... yea I have it. It's on my wife's phone. I'll email it to you when she gets back home tonight.

BTW Valentine 1 is the only detector that has 2 radar's.. one in the front and one in the back.... others only use a front dectector with a rear reflector. The V1 has the best rear detection by far.

Does the V1 involve any installing of additional sensors?

if you spray hairspray on your plates the surface becomes very reflective making the numbers un readable. if you get caught by one of those red light cameras.
