help me decide - 90s two seaters

I'm about to purchase a summer car and i can't really decide on which one I should get.

I've narrowed it down to two options

a 1994 Honda Del Sol, 120,000 km $6800
Pros
-great city fuel economy (8.1L/100km)
-seems very reliable
-lower km
-2nd model year (bugs fixed)
-new paint job
Cons
-no torque
-looks pretty ugly
-limited visibility

and a 1991 Toyota MR2 NA, 200,000 km $6200
Pros
-ok fuel economy (10.7L/100km)
-rwd
-more power (compared to del sol at least)
-looks a lot better than the sol
-cheaper
Cons
-questionable reliability (high kms, first model year, not-local car)
-needs work (clutch replacement, timing belt)
-paint chips

What I'm looking for is a cheap fun car that's reliable and has satisfactory fuel economy. I'm definately leaning more towards the MR2 - but worried about the reliability. Should I be worried about it? Anyone have any experiences with the 91 MR2?

I had a friend that bought a MR2 and that car was nothing but problems, but it had been heavily modded and some of the parts were interfering with each other. I think, as long as the MR2 is not modded heavily, you should be fine. If it is, I would run far, far away from it and pick up the del sol.

hmm

those 89 to 91 mr2's are so sexy. lol i LOVE the way they look. looks like a ferrari by toyota XD.

someone in my neighborhood owns a white one, and it SEEMS to be completely stock besides an intake from the back to the side of the roof (if i remember correctly).

absolutely stunning car. i was looking at one wiht 178,000km red and bone stock for 17k (t-top version or soemthign). but of course, that wouldnt be a suitable first car lol

EDIT: btw judging from your list, your paying 600 more for a car with no problems and lower kilometers =s isnt the decision obvious? lol

Personally, I'd choose neither. If I may, I'd like to suggest one though...

Nissan 300ZX TT (Z32) w/ T-Tops

I swear I'll have one someday.

the na mr2 shouldn't give you too many problems... it uses the same engine as the camry (92-01) and celica (89-99) anyway...

300ZX, the car i always tried to buy in Gran Turismo LoL

They are freakin sexy dude

I'd go with a 91 Honda CRX SI, there alot of fun to drive... It kills my friends Delsol

Posted by: samanfa

i'd go with the honda; less kms, less problems...=]

i would go and find a turbo mr2... 300zx would be a nice 2nd choice

Del Sol, i remember the MR2s having overheating problems

Now let's review this again...

Honda Del Sol

Nissan 300ZX TT T-Tops

my buddy has had a del sol for years with high miles and no problems......that's the only experience I have....

Posted by: Paul__Chen

300zx's have reliability issues and are very bloated

go for del sol
99% of mr2's out there have been beaten to death

Posted by: evolution921

I would go for the MR2, just because that's one of my fav japanese cars. I like honda, but I think the del sol is one of the ugliest honda around.

I was thinking about a Z too. Maintenance kind of scares me though.

I would take a 94 MR2 over anything.....Just buy a civic SI and take the rear seats out.

i'd take the MR2
it's 90-99 for the celica whoever mentioned it above, 89 had a 3S
those MR2's all had S series engines and can be easily swapped for a 3SG, so iw ouldn't worry about km's at all.
if you think the Del Slo is ugly, why would u even consider it?
Ever consider the other car that is on par that is about the same price range, which im surprised nobody mentioned, the Miata
they sound slow on paper but they can be really fun to drive as it seems that's what you're looking for
