It just had to be made. I know there's a lot of people here in hofo who has an ipod.

Post everything that's ipod related here

give out links to FREEWARE only - very important that it is FREE.

*if you would like to share something that isn't free(music, software)do it privately. use PMing

I personally have seen some posts which shared a couple of things illegaly (ringtones, mp3s)-I would like to make sure nobody does it in this post, we are not about to make that kind of post.

message to mods:
if you think this post breaks the rules and regulations here in Hofo, feel free to lock the post. I have made sure that I covered the most important rule (regarding about liscensed software, music). Other than that, I think everything's ok.

To kick things off (and I'm a newbie myself)

Is there a faster way to change the info of your song? Clicking the cell twice takes a long time and then you have to change the name and then enter it again---can I just do it on the song itself (outside iTunes) through right click then properties? Will iTunes update it automatically?

here's a link to a useful freeware:

I'll let you guys know how good the program is,I just converted Fight Club.

I'll ask a question...

So my Nano's battery is not 'user-replaceable' right? But is this really true? For example, phone cases are not 'user-replaceable', but often possible. Has anyone done this themselves?

I just don't want to send the damn thing in and pay more $$$ when the battery life starts sucking...

i need a video converter that works w/o having to use iTunes

i use xPlay right now, and really...REALLY don't want to have to use iTunes to put videos on my iPod.

thanks

Posted by: gone

Is there absoulty no programs that allows you to upload music from your Ipod to a PC/Mac?

Posted by: wBkM85

edit: you need iDump

http://www.yesitsfree.co.uk/ipod.ht...="inlineimg" />

Posted by: soulthoughts

A good alternative to iTunes is Winamp with the MLpod plugin. This allows you to transfer music to and from your ipod. The downside is if you have video on your iPod it will cause your videos to not work. So if you have a nano it's fine.

A good video converter for the iPod is Videora. It's simple and easy to use. It's basically one click converting and all you have to do is import into iTunes. Videora also makes a video converter for PSP. Both are free.

Posted by: wBkM85

i got ImTOO iPod Movie Converter 2. its free and does everything i need it to do. it automatically does the formatting of the videos then i can just drag and drop into xPlay and everything works perfectly. i tried using iTunes but nothing wanted to be imported, so i tried this and it works so, screw iTunes.

ImTOO iPod Movie Converter 2 + xPlay = FTW

Yes its called EphPOD...atleast u can use it for windows...or u can just explore the ipod (like a hard drive) find the Music folder (hidden) and copy all of the folders to the hard drive of ur computer.

My question. I am trying to convert some of my itunes I purchased from itunes into mp3's so I can chop them and make them ringtones. I go to convert the files and this is the message I get:

"***Song cannot be converted because protected files cannot be converted to other formats."

Anybody know how I can work around this?? Thanks.

Posted by: mojako

It can be done. First of all I don't have an ipod but there is a trick that would work regardless if the file has security or none. It's called analog copying. So basically what you do it play your itunes from your ipod and connect your ipod to the line in on your computer and record it to mp3 format.

I just got my second ipod video and can't sync the calendars my ipod with Outlook. The first ipod is able to sync with Outlook, and so my ipod nano, but I can't get this working on the new ipod. It's a 30GB black ipod video, it says that "iTunes cannot copy calendars to iPod." I already run the outlook program but no success. Anybody can help me solving this problem?

Can ipod nano support txt files?! Like notes...or something/!?!

These "new" iPods that just came out; anyone if these will be replaced soon by a 100GB version and/or have fullscreen and wireless/Bluetooth capability like I've read elsewhere? I want one, but I've heard that this last batch are really 5.5G and 6G will be totally different.

im looking to get a new car stereo with ipod compatibility. i assume the ipod support is pretty much the same accross the board, but who has one that they really like and what is it?

Posted by: plumers

You can actually keep the stock stereo system to play an ipod. I have a 6th generation Honda Accord and I have my stock CD player play songs from my ipod. I bought an auxiliary adapter that integrates between my car and ipod. Here's the link:

http://www.car2pc.com/auxiliary.html

If you still want to go for aftermarket, most Alpine players does connect with ipod.

What kind of car do you have? also, what type of ipod?

thats definately not a bad idea, but i drive a wrangler and their stock head units arent powered at all and the individual speakers have their own built in amps. its stupid i know but thats why im wanting to go all aftermarket. i have a 30g ipod video and it would be so cool if i could do the whole dvd-in-dash thing but security with a wrangler is less than dependable. alpine makes some real cool dvd dash units and my car uses double din too so i wouldnt necessarily need a fold out one. what would be ideal for me is a double din or regular din stereo with auxiliary ipod input and built in sirius. anyone know any good ones?

Anyone know how to mark a file (or a group of files) explicit in iTunes or the .mp3 file itself?

What version of Windows are you using and what version of iTunes did you download? Perhaps you downloaded the wrong version of iTunes and/or you have a version of Windows that isn't compatible.

Hey, i got an ipod video (newer generation) about 1 month ago. I noticed when i am listening to music, i can hear a clicking sound in the back of my ipod, i think the harddrive is spinning. Is this supposed to happen? It does not happen as frequently when i am listening to music, but when i am watching videos, it clicks and spins about every 1-2 minutes. Really need to know if its just my ipod, or if their is a firmware update i can get. All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hey guys! I'm really hoping for some good opinions/feedback on this question:

I'm looking at buying an iPod touch 8gb, and I wanted to ask: Those of you who bought the iPod touch in stores - did they charge GST/PST on it?

Also, do they give you the option to do engraving on it for free?

Reason I'm asking is that if you go to Apple Canada's online store - they're not charging Tax plus engraving for free. The only downfall is that it takes about 7-10 business days to ship.

So in short, has this been the case with you folks that have bought it in store? Have you guys received it on time, if you ordered from their website? Your feedback/thoughts would be much appreciated!

Until next time...

Posted by: soccerjohn

Engraving is something that Apple offers. Best Buy can't do this for you and you will pay tax at Best Buy or wherever you buy it.

I do have a question though, I have a 30gb iPod Video and its been working fine until about 2 weeks ago. Its starts making a clicking sound and the screen freezes. The song freezes also and I can't mover forawrd, backward or even back to the menu. All I can do is reset it and start over. Has anyone had this problem? I didn't buy an extended warranty since I take care of my stuff but wouldn't Apple cover this since is a problem with the product and nothing the user did? Any help would be apreciated.

seems like the HDD went back...if you're under 1 year or have Apple care call them and send it in.

You get charged tax on and off line, it's the Ontario law but you do get free shipping

Posted by: soccerjohn

right now on the apple site its says free engraving and free shipping on anything $50 or more. might be a good thing to get one now.

Thanks for your help guys!

After researching a lot, I picked it up from Best Buy on the weekend - they're having a sale on all iPods, so I picked up an 8gb touch for 319.

And needless to say, I'm loving it! It's my first iPod ever!!

I have the iPod video 30G. Does anyone experience lag when playing music and scrolling through menus? Also, is there a way to change the sensitivity of the touch wheel? I found that it's too sensitive.

IPOD TOUCH REVIEW
--------------------

Overall, I am pleased with my iPod Touch. I purchased an iPod Touch 16gb. They now have a 32gb Touch version which costs more. However I doubt I would need more than 16gb, unless I plan to keep my entire movie collection on the iPod. Unfortunately, that would require a non-existent 300-400gb iPod Touch. So far, I have loaded 350 songs, 7 movies, and 10 photos. I still have another 8gb of free space. Each movie seems to require about 500-1200mb of space (H.264 mp4 format), depending on their length. The 3hr "Lord of the Rings" movies are about 1gb, with about 1.2gb for the 3hr 20min "Return of the King". A typical 1.5hr movie requires approximately 550mb. I am guessing I may have room for another 10-12 2hr movies.

Below are descriptions of the iPod Touch functions, with my comments...

SOFTWARE:
-Pre-loaded free with the iPod Touch currently being sold (as of January).
-Customers with older Touches must pay about $20 to obtain the software.
-If purchasing an iPod Touch, ensure the store is not selling you old stock without the software pre-loaded.

MAPS:
-Allows you to zoom in/out.
-Can choose map, satellite, or hybrid view.
-Can triangulate your position via nearby wireless access points.
-Must have internet connection, although the last map viewed remains loaded when internet is lost.
-Can select start & destination points to provide driving route. However, suggested path may not necessarily be the most efficient.
-Touching an address in the contact list, automatically launches maps to display the contact's address location.

EMAIL:
-Requires internet connection.
-May have multiple email accounts configured for selection.
-Incoming email works fine, however many people have reported problems with the outgoing configuration. Gmail IMAP works OK for incoming and outgoing mail. I have not tried Yahoo's POP server. My work email system will not function for outgoing, since our server does not currently use SSL or passwords for outgoing mail. It relies on the SSL authentication passwords for incoming mail before processing any outgoing mail. Although the iPod Touch setup indicates passwords are "optional", in reality they are mandatory. Even when I enter a login/password, it still will not function. I assume the Touch is awaiting an authentication response which is never sent by our mail server.
-Emails are "temporarily" downloaded to the iPod Touch, even with the IMAP configured. These emails continue to be visible when the internet connection is lost.
-Touching a contacts email address, automatically launches email with their email address inserted for sending.

BROWSER:
-Works OK. However a little small to see. It is often necessary to zoom in on specific parts of a web page to make click/touch selections. I was unable to load one web page which had a moving background image.
-Specific web page URLs can be saved as menu icons for direct launch if an internet connection is available.

WI-FI:
-Auto connects to previously used wi-fi connections when in range, depending on configuration option selected.

CALENDAR/SCHEDULER, NOTEPAD: -No complaints.

CALCULATOR: -Basic +,-,x,/, and memory functions only.

CLOCKS/TIMERS/STOPWATCH/ALARMS:
-No complaints.
-Clocks can be configured for user pre-selected cities.

WEATHER:
-Provides weather reports for user pre-selected cities.
-Must have internet connection.

VIDEO:
-Overall, OK. However in some video scenes, a dim flickering/moving checkerboard pattern can be seen in some spots. Occasionally movement may hesitate. I am not certain if these issues are related to the iPod Touch video player, or the DVD ripping process.
-DVD covers may be uploaded and associated with movies. If no covers are associated, it uses the first screen shot as the movie icon (which is usually either black, or the movie company's logo eg. 20th Century Fox).

MUSIC:
-No complaints.
-Turn iPod Touch on side for album cover flow view.
-Touch album cover to see text list of album songs.
-Touch songs to play.

PHOTOS:
-No complaints.
-Pictures may be organized into folders from a PC before uploading.
-One photo may be selected for an iPod Touch startup wallpaper.

SYNCING
Photos, Contacts, Schedules, Movies, and Music may be synced with the PC.
(although Contacts and Schedules can only be synced with specific PC/MAC software)

WINDOWS DISK MODE:
-None.
-Without disk mode. Many previous backup softwares can not be used with the iPod Touch. "Wide Angle Software" sells "Touch Copy", which functions with the iPod Touch. It can upload/download files from the Touch, and permits browsing of the Touch's filesystem.

SLEEP MODE:
-Turns off touch display, and any playing video.
-Playing music continues in sleep mode.
-I am not certain if auto email download continues, if cofiguration option was selected.

DISPLAY:
-Some people have reported dead display pixels. I myself have one dead pixel near the upper left corner. The pixels are small, hence not visible, except in a totally blackened screen if you are observant. It would appear as a tiny speck of dust.

MENU SCREEN:
-Icons may be rearranged, or moved to different menu pages.

PASSWORD:
-May set a power on/time-out 4-digit security password.

DETAILED MANUAL:
-None provided. However, it can be downloaded from the Apple website.

IPOD TOUCH REVIEW UPDATE - BUG
----------------------------------

Feb 29th, 2008:

When attempting to schedule a set of dates as a single entry within the calendar scheduler eg. from Saturday Mar 1st to Sunday Mar 9th (rather than each day separately), a "dot" event indicator also appears on Monday Mar 10th (although no event description exists for that day).

IPOD TOUCH REVIEW UPDATE - BUG FIX
--------------------------------------

Feb 29th, 2008:

Apple released a new iPod Touch firmware update 1.1.4, which fixes the email mandatory password issue mentioned in my original review above. The calendar schedule problem I just posted today, persists after the new update.

okay so i transfer the songs from my computer to the ipod shuffle (the old one) it has the 512 MB capacity. I plug in my headphones and turn the thing on , When i see the green blink, i take it its on, But I cant hear anything... whys that?

This is sort of a weird question, but I don't actually own a Ipod, but my niece will be visiting next week......is there a way I can add songs to her Ipod?

I've heard that you need Itunes to upload .....but she keeps telling me that Itunes will only let her connect to her account and pc at home.......and if I try and upload any songs it will erase the existing songs that she already has on it.

Any help on this would be great....thanks....Mike

Posted by: Ronin0510

I cant be too sure, but when my nephew bought a used ipod from ebay and hooked it up to his pc it just wouldnt let him take songs from the ipod but he added all sorts of songs. Also I think its only when you update the firmware that you would lose songs. dont qoute me on this though. But that was just my nephew's(I was there) experience.

she needs to put her ipod on "manually manage library" at HER home computer. then she can hook it to your computer and it will be ok. But you cannot just take songs from and ipod, you will need a third party program like Copypod or anapod explorer. if she doesnt switch it to manual it will erase her songs when she hooks it to your computer.

Alpine head units seem to be the best for ipod navigation. I have an older model Pioneer that sounds great, but the navigation blows. But, when I was researching, the Deh-p6800mp pioneer deck seemed to get a lot of good reviews for it's overall performance and ipod controls.

If you dont want to control the ipod from the head unit, you could always get an auxilary male to male adapter (for a stereo that has an AUX input) and use it that way. the only bad thing about that is that it doesnt charge your ipod and it wont look as clean as having an ipod adapter running from the back of the deck hidden.

i have a p5800mp pioneer and i just wanted to have an ipod direct connection because i was sick of fm transmitter static. so far i love it even though it's not the greatest, it gets the job done. it costed me $50+$10 adapter, i sold my transmitter for $25, and my old head unit for $25, so basically it cost me $10 to upgrade. well worth it

Hey thanks, I'll have her try that.........Not really worried about getting her songs off.......as we have the songs.......just I have some she wants and just didn't want to erase hers......

Is this a setting you can change at any given time? Do you know where the tic or switch is? Thanks....m

Is there a way to automatically get the music from my computer onto my Ipod when I connect the Ipod to my computer? Some setting or something? I now have to manually pick the files I want to put on my Ipod.

Posted by: rvi5

Are you using iTunes to manage your music?

Connect your iPod to the computer.
From the drop-down-menu select "Edit" - Preferences.
On the pop-up window, select "Devices".
There should be a check-box for disabling auto syncing.
If it is check, uncheck it.

However, be warned. If you connect your iPod to multiple computers with "different" iTune libraries etc., the entire contents of your iPod could be replaced.

Hey folks,

I'm getting a new ipod pretty soon. I'll be purchasing an ipod classic 120gb. I currently have the 80gb. I've learned that I will need to upgrade to itunes 8.

1st Question - Will I lose all my playlists and settings i currently have if I do the upgrade?

2nd Question - Is there a way to backup all my playlists?

**Yes, I'm not the most ipod/itunes savvy person. **

Thanks.

Posted by: karaokeman2

you shouldn't loose or anything change...i upgraded to the latest/newest version when it was released a few weeks ago...nothing changed for me...all was same...seems to be a faster version to do things with from what all i've seen and played with it with my gear...

Posted by: Mr.S710a

I Have a quick question. On the IPOD Touch how sensitive is the voice recorder? I would like to know because im planning on buying an 8gb one ( I really dont need more than that) and would be nice if i could use it to record lectures and such.

Posted by: jeminz

I think this might be a more advanced question than usual...

A couple of months ago my iPod worked fine (Nano 1g), however something apparently happened and now it doesn't register in any way to my or somebody elses computer. I've gone through different USB's, different ports, manual reset, the hardware check thing (reset and hold down center and back button) and now i've spent half a year with the same songs on my iPod which is by far the ****ing record as far as i'm concerned. (I'm tired of Emery, no matter how good they are, I really, really am.)

It looks like there are a few people who have this problem (all Nano users too) but their posts never get answered whether it be on help sites or Yahoo. (No replies at all on actual Apple site coincidentally)

Any ideas?

Posted by: action-packed

i have a question. i download a lot of free movies and tv shows from torrent sites and other free download sites. when i convert the movies and tv shows to play on my ipod, they all show up in the movies section in itunes. so when i put them on my ipod all of the movies and tv shows end up in the movies section of my ipod.

my question is, how do i get the TV Shows to appear in the TV shows section of itunes after i convert them and not movies. i'm a stickler for having my library neat and organized. would i need a another type of converter or is there a way to edit the file info for the TV shows to appear in the tv show section.

Posted by: rvi5

Try right clicking on the item, then selecting "Get Info".
When the property page appears, select the "Options" tab.
From the "Media Kind" drop menu, choose the appropriate type of media.
