Low insurance rates for students?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hey,

I'm a university student, entering 2nd year of engineering. I recently decided that it would be better for me to just commute to school than stay in dorms, so i was looking for a car. I was just wondering if anyone knows of a way to get cheaper insurance. Right now, I would be charged at least 9000 a year to insure only myself with one vehicle Being a post-secondary student, is there a way to lower my insurance rates?

Thanks

Try a company called Kingsway and take all the extra's off ...well not unless you are going to be driving a really nice car. But i got quotes from All State and State Farm, because pilot wouldn't insure me anymore (1 30 over ticket and 1 accident estimated damage $15000 actuall $24000) but All state gave me a quote of like 10000 a year and State Farm said that they couldn't even insure me ...and i called this Kingsway and i got insured for like $5000 ...don't ask me how but that is the price they gave me.

try meloche monnex. they give discounts to university graduates(alumni) but they dont care as long as you can prove that you are related to the school somehow.(meaning you can still be a student and get the discount)

They're cheap for a reason. Kingsway's claims department is absolutely horrible. They tried to put me at fault and deny my claim when I was rear ended last year on the DVP. It took about a month of arguing back and forth with them before they finally approved the claim and I could get my car fixed. Not only that, but it was next to impossible to get hold of the claims agent they assigned me.

you need a new company/look for better quotes! if i was primary on my s2000 i'd 'only' be $7200 a year. unless you go under your parents/be occassional driver you will be paying lots

Tips for lower insurance...

1) Use brokers. Brokers represent an umbrella of companies and through one person you'll get prices on several companies. Use a few brokers though to make sure you cover enough different companies. Less work than trying to contact each company individually.

2) Increase your deductibles. I think you get the option of $300, $500, or $1000. Go for the highest as it'll drop your premiums. However, come claim time, that means you'll be paying out more. See how much the difference is between $500 and $1000 and choose accordingly.

3) Fight your speeding tickets. Hopefully the time between your incident and trial gives you time to lock into a full year of rates without that blight. Besides, there's always the chance it could be tossed due to no-show of the officer. Only suckers pay their tickets upfront.

Or get your Parents to be the primary and you be secondary driver

A cheap alternative is a Vespa.

I don't know how dangerous your roads are, or how much you care about your rep, but at least here there's no insurance required.

Of course if you hit someone or otherwise get in an accident with them, you have to pay everything out of pocket (if no insurance).

Just an option

hopefully your mother, it will be even cheaper.

I agree, get a scooter or motorcycle. So long as you own them outright, no insurance required where I live.

I wish the student discount would help I owe $904 every 6 months

I hear that if you take a driver's class (which I'm sure you have no time to take) and get good grades your insurance could be a lot lower.... There are even military discounts if your parents were in the military.

Off topic but what kind of engineering are you going to school for?

$9000???? Wow thats alot even for a 5 year old.

Well thanks everyone. I have until september to try and get a car/insurance, so I have some time.

In response to some of your questions:
- I applied the driver training course and no alcohol discounts already....9000 is the price with those
- In Canada, you have to have insurance on anything over 49 cc (I think). Also, a vespa/motorcycle is not very useful in the winters of Canada.

Thanks to everyone who replied and I will try those suggestions. BTW I'm in UOIT taking Automotive engineering (Mechanical Eng. with extra courses), and I have a good GPA.

Just curious, what car are you trying to get insured? A Porsche 911?

No way it will cost you $9000, even if it's a brand new car, first and only driver. Unless you totaled your previous cars like 5 times or you drive some insane cars.

I could suggest the following:

-You got enough $$$ to hire a driver/call a cab each time.
-Buy a cheaper car.
-Wait till you are 25 like someone said.
-Gender change (not really recommended).

hmmmm i dont know if you realize or not, but im a single driver, 19 yrs old. I'm trying to get a 1999 toyota corolla insured.

$9000 is totally plausible in Toronto.

So why don't you get your parents to take ownership of the car, and get the insurance under them?

They don't trust you enough or what?

Posted by: MapleLeafs

My parents and I have............."conflicting views" and so we're not together right now. That seems to be a problem.

my dad is an insurance broker.. find him =D he'll give u a nice quote..
hahahah ..

but $9000 seems wayyy too high.
i'm in my 2nd year of university .. 19 years old .. and i got quotes for several cars including a brand new cooper, accord coupe, civic si for MAX $6000 as a primary driver myself .. it also depends when u got ur G2 .. cuz that's how the star ratings are calculated..

Posted by: samanfa

ohh forgot to mention one important thing
i'm a girl .. so that's probably why it's so much cheaper. .
but STILL .. for a guy at 19 years of age .. should only hit $7000 MAX! ..
