Hi:

I am new to the SMT5600, I actually am still anciously waiting for it in the mail. While I am doing this I was curriose when I saw that people are upgrading to WM5. To the sounds of it you gain a lot more and the only things you lose is 850 band (Which I really wish I could keep, but none the less we have 1900 here as well) and the video record.

The question I have is, what benifits do you get, functionality wise / cosmetic compared to Windows 2003. Can you run more programs or something?

Thanks

You lose 850?!?! Where did you see this? I was planning on upgrading...

The ROM that is out there misses MMS, JAVA, MIDI ringtone support and maybe 850 MHz - some people say it still accesses 850 MHz but it is scanned last so the phone would use it only if it can't find service on 1900, 1800 and 900 MHz.

I upgraded an SMT5600 and reception went to the trash, and so did the phone once I wasn't able to restore it to its original WM 2003SE ROM. Some people may think differently but I advice everyone to say away from this WM5 "upgrade".

Thank you for your opinion, I think thats what I am feeling too, I know the cons of WM5 but are there any pros? I think I will stay away from the upgrade as well, unless there is an official upgrade for the NA SMT5600 and not the C600.

Having just upgraded to an HTC6700 (WM5) from an SMT5600 (Windows Mobile 2003), its my opinion that the 5600 runs on a much more stable OS. I haven't been too impressed with WM5 and there isn't anything I can do on it that I couldn't do on the SMT5600. You'll like the 5600. If I could go back, I'd stick with my 5600. It's a great phone. Windows Mobile 2003 seems to me to be a much more stable operating system.
