SE S710A/Cingular problem: Can tech's at stores "reflash" original software?

Quick question for you guys.

I've had my 710 just short of a year now, and a few days a go, started having the phone freeze on me. It's to the point now to where it will either get stuck at the SE splash screen in the beginning, the Cingular welcome screen, and if it makes it further, it will freeze at the desktop.

I'd post this in the SE forum, but this is mainly asking to see if Cingular can put the original software back on the phone, at a store. I never modified the software at all (ran the Cingular branded software the whole time), or had any weird applications. Never dropped it, no water damage.

So, are the stores able to take care of things like this? If so, I'm going to try to head over at lunch today (13:00 PST), so if someone can get an answer with in 5 hours, I'd REALLY appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Erik

If it's still below a year, just have a XBM done on the phone.

or how about a hard reset that will wipe all files and restore it just like a reflash would do. that saves you the headache of XBM

@Zerilos -- XBM? I'm assuming that's the warranty replacement?

@SHoTTa35 -- I can't get the phone to stay alive long enough to get to the master reset menu, I've tried.

@Everyone else -- Unless there's another hard reset I can do that I don't know about?

Thanks,

Erik

If it is under a year, call SE up and tell them your problem. They will ask you to send it in and they will flash it to the latest FW. I did that when I had my T637.

I called up a Cingular store, they said there was no way that they would be able to restore the firmware (no on-site tech), nor could any of the other local stores (again, no on-site tech). I have a bit of trouble believing this, as I'm in the Bay Area.

Either way, the gentlemen I spoke with told me to call a place that would be able to take care of it for me. I called, they said they could reflash the firmware (Cingular), but I would have to come up with a data cable of my own, and it would cost $40 to reflash.

I haven't called SE yet, but would it just be a better idea to get it warranteed through Cingular (had it less than a year)? I really don't want a refurbished phone, because if I have any problems with it in the next month or two, my original 1 year warranty will have expired.

Thanks,

Erik

If I were you, I'd take the XBM route, which yes, it is Cingular's warranty replacement.

XBM = eXchange By Mail.

Paying $40 to get a phone flashed is a waste of cash especially when it can be done for cheap or even free.
Calling SE would increase your headache since I've seen threads about people having their phones (which may/may not be S710a) sent to SE, then the repair winds up taking forever.

In my opinion your best course of action would be to do the XBM, unlock it, then sell that phone, use the cash to buy a new phone. If you really like that phone though, then you're stuck with just hanging on to it, so you could also consider adding insurance to your plan.

Thanks.

Now I'll include the rest of the story.. lol.

I have a warranty replacement which should be here today (if someone is home to sign for it), but they were unable to tell me if it was going to be a refurb or not. I really wanted to just try to fix mine.

The 9300 is nice (and out on the site now), but I'd really like to wait for the 6282 or N80. Who knows... maybe I can just sell this 710 when it comes in and keep using my 616 (backup phone, which has a busted joystick... no phonebook or texting for me).

Thanks everyone,

Erik
