I'm looking to replace my Sony Ericsson Z600 and its shortcomings (it doesn't have many). I'd love a really small phone, but I'd also love a really decent camera. MP3 playback and high-speed data transfer (such as EDGE support) don't really matter to me. So I think I've narrowed my choices to the SE k750i and the Moto RAZR V3i. Neither of these are available from T-Mobile so I'd be buying unlocked from the best online store I can find. They are similarly priced where I've looked.

What I like about the k750i:
-Really good pictures for a phone. Like, seriously impressive.
-Really good battery life
-Good UI
What I don't like:
-Might be a little bulky
-Not a flip phone

What I like about the V3i:
-Tiny form factor (of course!)
-Quad-band
-Looks to be a huge improvement over the original RAZR, with battery life comparable to at least my Z600, and a 1.23MP camera
What I don't like:
-Camera not as good as the k750i
-Motorola's UI sucks
-Seems a little fragile

And these are the things that I'd like to know: I'm concerned about durability of both, but the RAZR, due to its size and construction, seems more likely to be damaged. I'm also concerned about reception and voice quality/volume. Those are really important!!

Purely comparing features and not the other things that I mentioned plus anything else I might have forgotten or didn't realize was important, it seems to come down to: small form factor (and cool factor) of the V3i and the versatility of quad-band (if I ever wanted to switch from T-Mobile), or a nice camera and the trusted quality of the k750i?

I'm also open to other suggestions, but I'm not going for anything really expensive, and I need good battery life.

Its to bad that the W810i is so expensive still, because it would be perfect for your needs/wants. Personally I would go with the V3i, I don't think its wise to own a phone lacking 850Mhz in North America, since you never know where you are going to be, and at least in my area, no 850Mhz means cell no worky.

What I'm really wondering is, as a T-Mobile customer what is the likeliness that 850Mhz support would be useful to me (if I don't plan on switching soon). Roaming on Cingular, would I be able to take advantage of an 850Mhz-only coverage area?

The 850Mhz support and thin shape of the RAZR are the only real things keeping me undecided at the moment (since the k750i seemingly wins in ever other category), but they are certainly worthy considerations.

You can also look at the Samsung D600 (a slider phone) Very small and compact. Has very similar camera as the K750i (2MP Cam as well) and it is Quad Band.

Just stay on Tmobile and get the K750i. With that in mind. You dont have to worry about 850Mhz. I dont find the K750i bulky. Seems fairly compact. So yeah I recommend the K750i. (And yeah stay with Tmobile)

The k750i is easier to hold. While the razr is thinner, it is very wide, and often slip from my hands. If I were to choose again, I would pick the k750.

Thanks for the info, looks like a strong competitor to the k750i! I like slider phones. Wonder how the two compare? Wish I could try 'em before I buy 'em.

From that it looks to me like the D600 wins in the phone department but loses by a little bit in the extra features area. I forgot about the D600, they are an excellent phone, plus currently its got one of the best screens in the business, it would definitely not disappoint.

k750i/w800i

Pros:
- 2mp camera is superior to the D600
- Firmware upgrade to w800 gives you Walkman media player, can run in background
- SE UI is superior to Samsung's
- Very compact phone. I'm still shocked at how small it is

Cons:
- No 850 band

D600:

Pros:
- Cool form factor
- Very good 2.0mp camera
- Quad-band
- Awesome screen

Cons:
- Samsung UI is a little lacking
- Can't multitask (ie play music and write text messages at the same time)

Couple things you missed:

The D600 actually weighs about the same as the k750. D600 also has one of the best video recording in a phone of that size, superior to the k750. Some cons for D600 are that it can't vibe and ring at the same time, and no autofocus, which makes pictures sorta blurry if you get too close.

id get the k750i hands down... i have one, and its definately got the best camera ive seen on a phone, im having no problem with reception w/o 850... and its not that big at all.. but bulky or tall.

which one is louder, i have heard the v3i its loud enough

Yeah if you crank up the equalizer then the K750i is very very loud.

Cranking up the equalizer also often results in bad quality sound. =]

I haven't heard the k750 speakers myself, but the d600 ones sure sound good.

i would rather carry a phone that isn't considered thin but has a great UI than something that is skinny but boring and crappy UI (plus the v3i looks just like the millions of v3's out theres these days). But remember my opinion may be biased

I have a razr, and I just found my old v220 the other day, and i'm surprised at how much more comfortable the moto felt. Compared to the v220, the razr feels so awkward to hold, not to mention talk on.

If it wasn't for the extra features and rp, I would NOT use a razr over my little v220.

my brother has a d600, i have a k750i, and the speakers on the k750i are far more clearer than they are on the d600, and also, the ringtones play much louder.

Thanks for all the replies... seems a whole page of them slipped by without HoFo sending me a notification email, heh. I've decided to wait until prices on the W810i fall a bit and get one of those (otherwise I would want the K750i).
