Free v3's??? Are you kidding?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just heard that as soon as the v3i's are released to the stores that Cingular is going to offer the old v3 free after rebates. Can you imagine a stupider idea? I can't. Let's follow this through: Our best-selling phone ever is now free in every store........why are we carrying any other phones??? We might as well pull every other phone off the counter (with the obvious exception of specialty phones like the SLVR and PTT and CV phones). Who in their right mind is going to buy a Nokia 6061 for $19.99 when the freakin' RAZR is free??? No one...that's who. Talk about simplifying the sales process---"Which color free RAZR would you like? Oh those phones...forget about all that crap...we got the best phone in the store for free."

Well, that's our "sales prevention department" hard at work.

Posted by: privax

the razr has been out for what two years?
the phone sells for 99.99 right now
they are barley making that is if they are even making any money on it as of now,
cingular already made there money off the razr and anyone who ever wanted a razr most likely has it by now because of the price tag so why not drop the price offer it for free with a 2 year agreement and get anyone who still might be intrested in a razr who stil doesnt have one yet.

its a genius idea.

Posted by: cingman66

why not offer it free? didn't you see my original post? there would be no point in offering any other phones. i'm sure nokia, samsung, lg, etc. will be thrilled, too.

genius? that is the word that is MOST opposite of any word i would use to describe cingular.

you need to build value in the phones...start with a free piece of crap and work your way up to a decent phone...but to sell everything free just devalues everything. we put ourselves in this predicament...free phones are the scourge of the industry...customers have no clue that these things actually cost money. if everything is free, then why does cingular need us...they can just hire "clerks" at $7/hr. to shuffle paperwork around.

Posted by: Wiggum

so uh what's the problem? wouldn't that makes sales easier? or are you getting spiffed on those nokias?

Posted by: SuperDodge

You couldn't pay me $100 to take a Razr.

The same thing happened with the V60i and the T720i, its just signals EOL is right around the corner.

What's stupid is your use of the word "stupider"....Go slam a media bundle on someone...

Corp doesn't get paid on the price of the phone as I think should be with dealers as WELL....that way the customer gets what's right for THEM, not for YOU, and you get repeat business....Which will make you more money than a "one hitter quitter"

Posted by: jettaguy87

Why don't you generalize dealers more? To be honest I could care less what phone people get, actually leave all the RAZRs on the shelf and I'll actually make money on an EUP for once. I am a dealer who DOES give customers what they want. Quit acting like Corp. reps created good selling techniques, because we all know that isn't true.

Back on topic. Before Cingular makes this a reality (if they even do) then I would suggest getting the damn phones IN STOCK everywhere. I've had two straight weekends where I am just collecting salary and turning people away because of no stock on RAZRs.

I highly doubt this will happen, at least in any COR store. Hell the 6030 is $20 on a 2 year contract. The $100 2 year price will be around for a while... the V3i will cost $300.

Last I checked, this was a forum for Agents and Employees...not just COR store stooges.

We get paid the only way that is right for the customer. We can be honest with them and recommend a phone that fits their needs (fitsubest!)...not just push promotional crap on them (ie., LG1500, most recently). COR stores have traditionally (at least in my area) just pushed whatever Cingular has too many of...how is that right for the customer? They neglect to tell the customer that there is a much better phone for just $xx more.

We make the same amount of money (more or less) no matter which phone we sell...so it is in our best interest to sell the customer what works for them. They want better reception...Nokia. They want more features...Motorola. My beef with Cingular is that if they do lower the cost of the v3 (which I hear the NE market is fighting---thank God) and offer it free, then we really won't be able to guide the customer into a phone that might be better suited for their needs...they will just see "RAZR-FREE" and that will be that. Nevermind that the RAZR has been, as of recently, VERY unreliable...everything from dust under the screen to an outright recall. I don't have alot of faith in Motorola putting out more and more RAZR's to meet the demand without there being a ton of quality issues. Try convincing a customer to pay $20 for a Nokia 6030 instead of taking a chance on a free RAZR...never gonna happen.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word stupider in my post...maybe I should have used the word I would describe you as: Ignorant. If you had bothered to read any of my other posts, you would realize that, if nothing else, my spelling and grammar are usually impeccable...which is a hell of alot more than I can say for 90% of the other people on this forum.

Thats where being a salesman comes into play. If you feel that strongly against the RAZR then suggest a different phone.

Posted by: cingman66

That's my point...it won't matter how good you are--when people see free RAZR that is all they will see. Would you buy a different phone if you were the customer?

I don't have to question how good of a salesman I am. Numbers speak louder than words. I'm sure I would be able to "upsell" some people, but why be put into that situation? Cingular has gone through the trouble of categorizing their phones as "good" "better" and "best"--there should at least be some price difference when you move up in category. There shouldn't be a "best" phone hogging up the "good" category. Did they ever hear of "building value" in the products? Apparently not, as history would tell us, because they have traditionally brought phones into the market at ridiculously low prices only to raise them up later. In what other business do prices go UP over time? Don't you hate it when customers get referred by their friend to come in and get a phone for $xx only to have to tell them that the phone is now $xxx? I know that things go on sale every now and then, but Cingular STARTS the phone off too low, then after they build excitement, they jack it up. Smart from their standpoint I guess...get people interested, then soak 'em. But a nightmare for us. People don't understand that the $29 phone their friend got last week is now $99---they will either go somewhere else, or not buy the phone at all, or you will have to match pricing and get screwed. Not great options.

Since when is making a phone free a problem?

I'm pretty sure if the price of the v3 drops to something like that, other phones will as well.

Posted by: blessd24

I think the V3 is the best phone that we have. I carried it for 8 months without one problem. My wife has had one for 9 months with a dang problem. Ive sold tons of them because I really think they are the most durable, best signal receieving phones on the market. (I tested the 6102 against the razor in rural areas and it was basically a wash) If they sold the razors for free the only thing i would be upset about would be the fact that everyone has one now and its not special. Thats why i sold mine and bought an 8125.

Posted by: blessd24

And dont ya know they dont do free phones in the store anymore?

Posted by: anubis9278

projected retail was $149.95 with $150 MIR. <---- has not been approved or confirmed by anyone. Just rumor mill. Don't see how it will change much in retail locations. cheap people will always be cheap people.

Then that would be your problem working for an indirect. Looks like you would want to speak to the owner of your indirect if they sell the V3 for free.

COR employees are not stooges. I could rant & rave all day about bad indirects. But do I.... no.. because they are awesome ones out there just like COR employees.

Have a good one.

That won't happen for anyone working under Shay in the West. We don't do free phones in the store.

I love it when I get to say "no we don't have free phones. I know they do online, it says online only."

the price dropped so its more then likely

There was, supposedly, a promo in the SE markets to match Verizon's buy one get one razr, and I forget the dates. In store only. Do I see them offering the razr free after the v3i is released? I have no idea. Just have to wait to see.

This is true. Buy one for $99 ($199 - $20 MediaNet purchase - $80 rebate), get one free ($100-$20 MediaNet purchase - $80 rebate). Amazingly, in the week and two days this deal has been running, I haven't had anyone ask me about it. I think that everyone who wants a RAZR already has one by now and Cingular knows it, thus the clearance-type pricing. I expect we'll have another RAZR fan surge once the v3i is out.
