Blackberry tethering

Hi... I am thinking about dumping an MPX220 smartphone and moving to blackberry service here in the US. But I need the option of tethering via bluetooth for times that I am out of wifi coverage and internet access for my laptop, which I do now with Cingular.

Which carriers support this kind of operation with a blackberry in the US? It appears that Cingular doesn't allow this with a blackberry (even though they do with my MPX220), but I can't seem to find an answer re: Verizon's service. And T-mobile doesn't support blackberries at all now, right?

If I had an unlocked blackberry GSM 8700, could I stick my cingular SIM in it and have tethering work?

Sorry for all thew newbie questions, I've never used a blackberry before, but my company needs to make a decision about buying several smartphones or going over to blackberry service, and I get to make that call.

Thanks,
Mike

Really? Nobody supports this? This seems like a big incentive to use smartphones instead... Guess we'll stay on the smartphone path and deal with exchange doing pushes to the phones.

Thanks,

T-Mobile will support a 7290 and 8700 as a modem. As far as doing this over bluetooth RIM has blocked this feature. It is for the corporate customers who need the utmost security. You can use the USB cable and use the blackberry as a modem.

I am part of a corporation and we use bluetooth tethering all the time. I can understand why some would like this feature blocked, but why deny that functionality to others who want it?

I looked up shark modem, but they say it doesn't work over bluetooth. Carrying around a modem cable to tether is bound to generate lots of support calls because people will lose them. Our standard laptop (thinkpad) has bluetooth, but it's set so the user explcitly has to activate it, and once it suspends or hibernates, it will come back up turned off.

Folks don't tether very much, if they did, then carryinga round a cable would be less of an issue. But for sporadic use, bluetooth is ideal.

Thanks,
Mike

RIM feels if one BB is comprimised then the eitire network may be comprimised. They are very security minded for the entire network...

If the security of the whole system is threatened by one compromised client device, then their system is really hosed! I doubt this is an official position.

Thanks,
Mike
